Challenges of Implementing an Electronic Document Management System in a Large Health Care Facility in Southern California

The implementation of Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMSs) is a complex process. Scripps Health started a project to implement the web based McKesson Horizon Patient Folder (HPF) software system in early 2011 in order to digitally capture all the information in patient charts. This research used semi-structured interviews to assess the perceived benefits of using an EDMS and its effect on work-flow from the perspective of physicians and health information management (HIM) staff at two hospitals in San Diego, California. The study was designed to assess the new work-flow processes, work-flow challenges associated with EDMS implementation, and other key factors associated with successful implementation of such systems. The research found the opinion of physicians and HIM staff about the effect of an EDMS on their work-flow to be mostly positive. The data analysis further showed that perceived benefits of an EDMS included improved patient care quality and patient care efficiency due to capabilities such as immediate access to patient information by multiple users, reduced patient data error and improved communication between HIM staff and physicians. The analysis of study data also highlighted some shortcomings of EDMSs; these included the system not being user friendly, not having full EMR capabilities and benefits and the inability of EDMSs to interface with other existing systems. Thesis ( MA (History))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The thesis “ ‘Almal kom na Lubbe: Die skoenmakerverhaal van A.P. Lubbe en Seun (Edms) Bpk, 1918-2001”, is an attempt to investigate the history of a family business spanning three generations against the background of the general socio-economic and political circumstances during the period 1918-2001. In 1918, at the time of the start of industrialisation in South Africa, Andries Petrus Lubbe started a bridle and shoe repair business en Bird Street, Stellenbosch. To him this business was the beginning of the realization of a dream to own his own shoe factory. During the 1940’s Andries Lubbe started experimenting with the manufacturing of shoes. This experiment was successful and encouraged his eldest son, Willem, to join the business in 1943. In 1948 after Willem completed his training in shoe technology in Britain, the business was officially registered as a private company. In 1956 Lubbe opened a shoe factory near Du Toit Station in Stellenbosch. This was the start of an era of mass production and mechanization in the company. Willem Lubbe was solely in charge of the factory and against the background of the economic affluence of the sixties the company prospered. In 1970 Andries Lubbe died and Willem Lubbe became the sole owner of the family business. In 1976, André Lubbe, Willem’s only son, joined the business. Against the setting of the unfavourable economic circumstances of the late seventies and eighties, André Lubbe succeeded to guide the company towards the niche market field by manufacturing speciality shoes, e.g. “Trailbuster” hiking boots. The nineties were characterised by unstable political and socio-economic conditions associated with South Africa’s transition to democracy and Lubbe suffered as a consequence. In an attempt to overcome the problems André tried to make the company more internationally orientated and Lubbe International was therefore established in 1994. This was not successful and by 1999 it was clear that Lubbe would not be able to function any longer. Some of the brand names were sold to another shoe manufacturer, Corrida Shoes, and in 2001, the doors of A.P. Lubbe and Son (Pty) Ltd were finally closed.

Verification Of FAA's Emissions And Dispersion Modeling System (EDMS)

Air quality has been a major environmental concern for many years. Recently the issue of airport emissions has presented growing concerns and is being studied in much more depth. Airport emissions come from a variety of point, line and area sources, making emissions modeling for airports very complex and more involved. Accurate air quality models, specific to airport needs, are required to properly analyze this complex array of air pollution sources created by airports. Accurate air quality models are needed to plan for increased growth of current airports and address concerns over proposed new ones. The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Emissions and Dispersion Modeling System (EDMS) is a program that is the required model for assessing emissions from airport sources. This research used EDMS Version 4.21, which incorporates the EPA dispersion model AERMOD, to model detailed airport data and compare the model's predicted values to the actual measured carbon monoxide concentrations at 25 locations at a major U.S. airport. Statistics relating the model characteristics as well as trends are presented. In this way, a thorough investigation of the accuracy of the EDMS modeled values of carbon monoxide was possible. EDMS modeling included two scenarios, the first scenario referred to as practice detail included general airport information that a modeler could find from the airport being studied and the second scenario referred to as research detail utilized very detailed information from observer logs during a three day observation period. Each of the modeling scenarios was compared to the field measured data and to each other. These comparisons are important to insure the model is adequately describing emissions sources at airports. Data analysis of this study was disappointing since measured levels of CO were generally higher than modeled values. Since EDMS is continually changing and improving perhaps these results can help enhance future models.

Nowadays, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are attracting more and more interest. Thus, many countries aim to increase the share of green energy and have to face with several challenges (e.g., balancing, storage, pricing). In this paper, we address the balancing challenge and present the MIRABEL project which aims to prototype an Energy Data Management System (EDMS) which takes benefit of flexibilities to efficiently balance energy demand and supply. The EDMS consists of millions of heterogeneous nodes that each incorporates advanced components (e.g., aggregation, forecasting, scheduling, negotiation). We describe each of these components and their interaction. Preliminary experimental results confirm the feasibility of our EDMS.
