The subversive Cinderella : gender, class and colonialism in the work of Dorothy Edwards (1903-1934)

Flay, Claire Andrea January 2008 (has links)
This thesis will explore the impact of gender, class and colonialist issues on the life and fictions of Welsh novelist and short-story writer Dorothy Edwards. Although largely a literary analysis, this thesis also includes new biographical material which suggests that the class and gender ideologies that influenced her early years became key to her writing. After an introduction presenting the arguments of the thesis, the first two chapters are both primarily aimed at establishing the context of Edwards‟ work, the first in terms of her community and life history, and the second in terms of literary context. Chapter one locates Edwards firmly in her social and historical context, in part by means of new and exciting information discovered in a recent deposit of manuscripts pertaining to Edwards held at the University of Reading. In chapter two I argue that Edwards can be placed within the female modernist tradition as a result of her experimentation with narrative perspective in her 1927 short-story collection Rhapsody and her particular utilisation of the short story form. The central body of this thesis consists of a literary re-analysis of Edwards‟ work in the light of feminist and postcolonial theory, alongside a class-based reading of her fictions. Edwards‟ work cries out for analysis in terms of feminist theory, and her depiction of female roles and female sexuality in Rhapsody forms the focus of chapter three. Most if not all of Edwards‟ women are assigned to a marginalized position, and I explore the implications this has regarding her concept of gender relations. Edwards‟s depiction of social class in her fictions is particularly interesting; accordingly, chapter four offers a discussion of the representation of class in her 1928 novel Winter Sonata. I argue that here, more clearly than in her short stories, she deconstructs the constrictive nature of class boundaries and expectations and the effects these have on male and female, working- and middle-class characters alike. I return in chapter five to the details of Edwards‟ life, this time during the much overlooked and misunderstood period following the publication of Winter Sonata, much of which she spent in the company of the Bloomsbury group when visiting or living in London. The final chapter of this thesis analyses the literary produce of Edwards‟ time in London in the light of postcolonial theory; I suggest that the idea of a pervasive and mentally colonising cultural imperialism is key to understanding Edwards‟ work. The thesis ultimately aims to demonstrate that an analysis of Edwards‟ literary output in the context of current theoretical paradigms, together with new biographical information discovered in archival sources, reveals that issues of class, gender and colonialism are central to the work of Dorothy Edwards, as indeed they were to the Wales in which she was born and raised.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Sergio Paulo de Lima.pdf: 970100 bytes, checksum: 0f3b368b4ce3c48897e5cba4eef9aa16 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-15 / Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil / This research aims to study the alterity in the missiological practice of the American congregation theologian and philosopher Jonathan Edwards with the Mohicans (Mohicans), Housatonics, Mohawks, Onohquaugas and Oneidas between 1751 and 1758 in Stockbridge on the border of New England. As strategy was adopted a historical research having as theoretical reference the set of his writings in the village and primary texts of other authors like Samuel Hopkins, a personal friend and historian that analyzed the subject in itself and its actions that distinguished it with a theoretician-practical in the eighteenth century. Such research highlights the influences, motivations, guiding principles of its ministry, and its applicability at a time of known political, social, and economic difficulties of the brand-new American Nation. The expected results of this investigation point to a small increase in the understanding of edwardian alterity in missiological practices as a legacy to be reprobated in later times. Among other aspects, it is expected that its concepts, actions and results contribute to a development, growth and success in the management of the current and future missiological process.

The oboe and English horn works of Ross Edwards and his place in Australian music

Lickiss Aleo, Angela 01 May 2016 (has links)
The oboe and English horn works of Ross Edwards are fascinating and challenging to oboists of all abilities. However, Edwards' works have received little recognition beyond Australia. These pieces can be used to expose students to non-European influences in music, especially that of Aboriginal Australians. These works deserve to be considered part of the standard repertoire of an oboist due to their musical and technical demands and their position in the repertoire of the 20th and 21st centuries. Modern Australian music history can be traced back to the time the English first colonized the continent. After that time, the country began its journey toward musical independence from England eventually leading to a uniquely Australian sound. Born in 1943, Ross Edwards is a contemporary Australian composer that has identified his music as Australian. He acknowledges several outside sources in his music, from Australian Aboriginal to the distilled sounds of nature from the Australian Outback. Edwards has created his own musical style, utilizing distilled musical fragments later named icons, and system he uses to compose his works. It is through an understanding of where Australia's musical heritage begins, and how it develops, that we may gain a greater knowledge of contemporary Australian composers like Ross Edwards. This study demonstrates the importance of Ross Edwards' music in the development of an Australian sound through historical context and the analysis of his oboe and English horn works.

Valvular Performance and Aortic Regurgitation Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Using Edwards Valve Versus Corevalve for Severe Aortic Stenosis: A Meta-Analysis

Bhatheja, Samit, Panchal, Hemang B., Barry, Neil, Mukherjee, Debabrata, Uretsky, Barry F., Paul, Timir 02 October 2015 (has links)
Objectives To compare incidence of aortic regurgitation (AR), paravalvular AR and valvular performance with Doppler hemodynamic parameters following transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with Edwards valve (EV) versus CoreValve (CV). Currently, there are scarce data on post-TAVR echocardiographic outcomes comparing EV and CV. Methods PubMed and the Cochrane Center Register of Controlled Trials were searched through May 2015. Twenty studies (n = 11,244) comparing TAVR procedure that used EV (n = 6445) and CV (n = 4799) were included. End points were post-TAVR moderate to severe AR and paravalvular AR, effective orifice area (EOA), mean trans-aortic pressure gradient (MPG), peak trans-aortic pressure gradient (PPG) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). The mean difference (MD) or relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was computed and p < 0.05 was considered as a level of significance. Results Moderate to severe AR and paravalvular AR were significantly lower in EV group (RR: 0.57, CI: 0.52–0.63, p < 0.00001 and RR: 0.40, CI: 0.25–0.63, p < 0.0001 respectively) compared to CV group. EOA and PPG were not significantly different between EV and CV groups. MPG was significantly lower among patients in CV group (MD: 1.08, CI: 0.05–2.10, p = 0.04). LVEF was significantly higher in patients in EV group (MD: 2.26, CI: 0.77–3.74, p = 0.03). Conclusions This study showed CV is associated with higher incidence of post-TAVR moderate to severe paravalvular AR. Echocardiographic valvular performance measures (MPG, LVEF) showed minimal but significant difference, which may not be clinically significant.
