A biossorção, vem se colocando como uma alternativa potencialmente atrativa para uma grande variedade de efluentes industriais. Este processo vem adquirindo suma importância por utilizar biossorventes de baixo custo operacional, além de que os mesmos podem apresentar alta seletividade e taxa de remoção. Dentre os biossorventes utilizados para retenção dos metais pesados em efluentes industriais destacam-se os fungos, a exemplo da Saccharomyces cerevisiae que pode ser utilizado neste processo por possuir grande capacidade de retirar metais pesados dos efluentes industriais. Uma outra vantagem é que se trata de um resíduo facilmente obtido em grandes quantidades como subproduto de processos industriais, tendo em vista que o Brasil é o maior produtor mundial de álcool etílico via processo fermentativo, utilizando-se deste microrganismo como agente da fermentação. Experimentos da cinética de biossorção do íon cádmio utilizando a Saccharomyces cerevisiae foram realizados, sendo os mesmos conduzidos em tanques agitados. Os modelos empíricos cinéticos utilizados foram o modelo empírico de dois parâmetros e o pseudo-segunda ordem, os mesmos apresentaram boa reprodutibilidade para o parâmetro qe (capacidade adsortiva), como também se obteve bom ajuste nas curvas cinéticas, exceto quando se trabalhou com concentração elevada e na maior temperatura. A técnica de planejamento experimental foi utilizada para avaliar os efeitos das variáveis concentração inicial do íon metálico e temperatura sobre os parâmetros cinéticos. A concentração inicial do íon metálico estudado foi a variável que apresentou influência significativa quando comparado com o efeito da temperatura nas condições estudadas. Os melhores resultados de capacidade de adsorção foram obtidos com o aumento da concentração do metal. / The increase in the industrial activities has intensified the problems of environmental pollution by heavy metals and mainly due to cadmium. Cadmium metal is the one which is mostly used in various industrial processes and is extremely toxic in low concentrations, besides causing serious health problems. The biosorption process is becoming a potentially attractive alternative for a great variety of industrial effluents. This process is important as it utilizes biosorbents of low operational cost, higher selectivity and high metal removal rates. Amongst the biosorbents used for heavy metal retention from industrial effluents, the fungi are distinguished. For example, the Saccharomyces cerevisiae can be used for such purpose as it has higher capacity of metal removal from industrial effluents. Another advantage is that, it is a residue which is easily obtained in big amounts as by-product of industrial processes. Brazil is world-wide big producer of ethanol and utilizes this microorganism as fermentation agent. Kinetic experiments for cadmium ion biosorption using Saccharomyces cerevisiae in agitated recipient were carried out. The empirical kinetic models used were the empiric model of two parameters and the pseudo-secondorder. These models presented a good reproduction for the parameter qe (adsorption capacity), as well as showed a good fit for experimental kinetic curves, except when high concentration and temperature were used. To evaluate the effect of initial concentration of the metal ion and temperature variables on the kinetic parameters the experimental design methodology was used. The initial metal ion concentration was the variable that had significant influence when compared with the effect of the temperature, in the conditions studied. The best adsorption capacity results were obtained when the metal ion concentration was increased.

Le recyclage des condensats d'évaporation dans l'étape de fermentation permettrait aux distilleries de diminuer leur consommation d'eau de forage et leur production d'effluents. Actuellement, les condensats sont traités par lagunage avant épandage et pourraient être recyclés comme eau de dilution pour la fermentation si les composés inhibiteurs qu'ils contiennent étaient éliminés : il s'agit de composés phénoliques, acides carboxyliques et dérivés du furane. L'étude du traitement a porté sur les procédés physico-chimiques présentant les meilleures capacités de rétention des composés inhibiteurs cibles : l'osmose inverse, l'échange d'ions et l'adsorption. L'étude des paramètres opératoires de ces procédés et de leurs combinaisons a permis d'optimiser leurs conditions d'application pour améliorer leur efficacité de rétention et de proposer leur mise en œuvre industrielle. L'impact des condensats diversement traités sur l'activité fermentaire des levures a été étudié lors de fermentations en continu. Le caractère fermentescible des condensats traités a été corrélé à l'efficacité de rétention du procédé. L'osmose inverse combinée à l'échange d'ions, permettant l'élimination de 99% des composés inhibiteurs cibles, est le seul procédé qui ne perturbe ni la croissance des levures ni leur production d'éthanol. A partir de cette combinaison on a dimensionné une unité traitant 100 m³.h⁻¹ de condensats. Selon les paramètres opératoires appliqués, on présente le bilan d'effluents produits et de réactifs consommés, ainsi que les installations correspondantes.

Anaerobic co-digestion of abattoir and textile industry wastewater in a UASB reactor

Abattoir effluents are classified under high-strength wastewaters because of their characteristic high organic load hence highly biodegradable. Anaerobic co-digestion is the concept of degrading two effluent streams with complementary characteristics in order to improve the substrate removal rate. The feasibility of co-digesting abattoir and textile wastewater in a UASB reactor was evaluated at mesophilic and ambient temperature conditions. Preliminary experiments were conducted in 500 ml batch reactors to evaluate the optimum abattoir to textile synthetic wastewater ratio. The effect of COD, TVFA, alkalinity and pH on biogas yield was examined at both ambient and mesophilic temperatures. Anaerobic co-digestion of abattoir to textile wastewater in the ratio determined in the batch process was carried out in a 3 L UASB reactor by a continuous process. The continuous biodegradation process was executed at three different HRTs (22, 18 and 14 hrs) over a 60 day operation period. UASB reactor efficiency was achieved at organic loads ranging from 3.0 – 10.8 gCOD L-1 day-1. Continuous mode experiments were carried out at influent flow rates which corresponded to HRTs ranging between 1 to 8 days in order to evaluate the steady state operating parameters for the co-digestion process. The abattoir to textile effluent ratio was found to be 60:40 respectively. The COD, TVFA, alkalinity and pH and biogas yield followed a similar pattern over time at both mesophilic and ambient temperature conditions. Experimental data adequately fit the Grau first order kinetic model and average COD removal efficiencies of 85% and BOD5 of around 96% were achieved. The average biogas yield remained essentially constant, around 0.19 L/g CODremoved. The co-digested mixture was found to be biodegradable judging from the BOD:COD ratio of 0.53. TCOD removal efficiency decreased from 93% to 16% as HRT decreased from 8 days to 1 day. The kinetics of a UASB reactor co-digesting the mixture of synthetic abattoir and textile wastewater was evaluated in this study using Grau second order multicomponent substrate removal kinetic model. The Grau second order kinetic model, whose kinetic coefficient (ks) was 0.389, was found to be suitable for predicting the performance of a lab-scale UASB reactor.

Intégration de l'électrodialyse et de l'oxydation photochimique pour le traitement d'effluents salins contenant du phénol / Integration of electrodialysis and photochemical oxydation for the treatment of saline waste waters containing phenol

Les procédés d’oxydation chimique sont utilisés pour traiter des effluents contenant des composés organiques non biodégradables. Or, la présence de sels diminue l’efficacité de ce traitement. Dans ce travail, nous étudions un procédé couplé, comprenant une étape de déminéralisation par électrodialyse associée à une étape de photo oxydation (photo-Fenton). Une eau synthétique, contenant du NaCl et du phénol, est utilisée comme modèle. Chaque opération est étudiée en couplant des outils expérimentaux et théoriques. Concernant l’électrodialyse, l’influence des variables opératoires, comme la composition initiale de l’eau à traiter et la densité de courant, sur le taux de déminéralisation et le rendement en phénol, est évaluée. Différents types d’expériences sont réalisées pour dissocier les contributions des divers phénomènes au transfert d’eau, de sel et de phénol. Dans des conditions standard, outre la diffusion, une contribution additionnelle au transfert de phénol, directement proportionnelle au transfert d’eau et donc à la migration des sels, est mise en évidence. Un modèle phénoménologique est proposé pour relier les flux aux forces agissantes et les paramètres caractéristiques sont déterminés en ajustant les résultats expérimentaux avec ceux du modèle. Le procédé d’oxydation photo chimique (Fenton) est ensuite étudié suivant une approche similaire. La sensibilité du procédé, caractérisé par une vitesse de dégradation, aux variables d’entrée est évaluée. En particulier, on montre une influence de la présence de sels. Eu égard à la complexité du système réactionnel, un modèle de type réseau de neurones est choisi pour modéliser la relation entre l’efficacité de l’oxydation aux conditions opératoires. Dans un dernier temps, un modèle hybride est proposé en intégrant les modèles développés pour les étapes d’électrodialyse et d’oxydation. Ce modèle est testé en discutant différentes configurations vis-à-vis de considérations énergétiques. Il sera utilisé pour étudier les configurations les plus adaptées vis-à-vis d’autres critères, comme la qualité de l’eau traitée par exemple. / Chemical oxidation processes can be used to treat industrial wastewater containing non-biodegradable organic compounds. However, the presence of dissolved salts may inhibit or retard the treatment process. In this work, a coupled process is studied including a desalination step by electrodialysis (ED) associated with an advanced oxidation process (photo-Fenton) with a synthetic wastewater containing NaCl and phenol. The experimental study concerning ED was carried out using a pilot plant. The influence of process variables, like the initial water composition and the electrical current intensity, on the demineralization factor was investigated. Experiments were also performed without electrical current application, in order to determine the unfavorable phenol transfer through the membranes due to diffusion. The phenol and salt concentration variations in the ED compartments were measured over time, using dedicated procedures and an experimental design to determine the global characteristic parameters. A phenomenological approach was used to relate the phenol, salt and water fluxes with the driving force (concentration and electric potential gradients). Under normal ED conditions, two contributions were pointed out for the phenol transport, i.e. Diffusion and convection, this latter coming from the water flux due to electroosmosis related to the migration of salts. The fitting of the parameters of the transport equations resulted in good agreement with the experimental results over the range of conditions investigated. Photo- enton oxidation process was studied in a laboratory batch reactor. As expected, the results confirm the negative effect of the salt concentration on the phenol removal efficiency by oxidation. This effect was not found to be linear concerning salt concentration and degradation rate. Due to the complexity of these reaction systems, a model based on artificial neural networks has been developed to fit the experimental data. This model describes the evolution of the pollutant concentration i.e. phenol, by means of a reaction rate, during irradiation time under various operating conditions.

The Determination of Organic-Bound Chlorine Levels in Municipal Wastewaters After Treatment with Heavy Chlorine Doses

The development of an analytical method for the determination of total organic-bound chlorine (TOCl) produced during the chlorination of municipal wastewater effluents is presented. Sewage effluent from the Denton, Texas municipal treatment plant was chlorinated at high chlorine doses (1000 - 4000 ppm), as well as typical treatment levels. Chlororganics present in the wastewater, before and after chlorination, were concentrated by adsorption on Amberlite XAD-2 macroreticular resin, followed by elution with diethyl ether. After concentration, the extracts were analyzed for TOC1 by microcoulometry. Analysis of wastewater extracts revealed the production of substantial amounts of new chlorinated organics when effluents were treated with chlorine. The method shows good precision and estimated accuracy is favorable.

[pt] Diferentes métodos espectrométricos de análise, incluindo ICP OES, ICP-DRCMS e Q-ICPMS com técnicas hifenadas (geração de hidreto, vaporização eletrotérmica ou cromatografia de íons), foram aplicados na caracterização química de 16 óleos e 41 amostras de efluentes aquosos de uma refinaria de petróleo. O objetivo específico deste estudo foi o de entender o comportamento do selênio (Se) e de suas espécies químicas ao longo do processo de geração e tratamento dos efluentes desta unidade industrial. A caracterização química multielementar das amostras por ICP-MS revelou uma composição muito complexa da maioria deles, com altas salinidades e potenciais interferentes espectrais e não espectrais presentes. Por isso, foi necessária uma reavaliação crítica das técnicas analíticas para a determinação de Se e de suas espécies. As técnicas de ICP-DRC-MS, utilizando CH4 como gás de reação, e de ETVICPMS mostraram o seus potencial para a determinação de Se com melhores limites de detecção (cerca de 0,05 ug L-1 para ambas), mas também as suas limitações na análise de efluentes com altas salinidades. Nas 16 amostras de petróleo analisadas, verificou-se uma grande variabilidade nas concentrações de Se total, cobrindo uma faixa de < 10 ug kg-1 até 960 ug kg- 1, a qual poderia explicar também a carga muito variável deste elemento nos efluentes das diferentes unidades de tratamento. As maiores concentrações de Se total foram encontradas nas águas ácidas, com concentrações de até 1714 ug L-1. Confirmou-se a predominância de SeCN - na maioria das amostras analisadas, mas observaram-se também outras espécies com tempos de retenção diferentes das espécies Se(IV), Se(VI) e SeCN-, especialmente nos efluentes da estação de tratamento de despejos industrais (E.T.D.I.). Em amostras ácidas, identificou-se Se coloidal (Seº) formado pela decomposição de SeCN-, ou de outras espécies pouco estáveis nestas condições. Experiências de bancada com soluções de SeCN- apoiaram esta hipótese. Foi constatada, que o perfil de especiação de amostras coletadas num mesmo local de processamento, mas em épocas diferentes, pode variar significativamente, o que torna difícil a comparação de dados obtidos neste trabalho com os de outros autores. / [en] Different spectrometric methods of analysis, including ICP OES, ICP-DRC-MS and Q-ICP-MS, the latter hyphenated to hydride generation, eletrothermal vaporization or ion chromatography have been appliesd to the chemical characterization of 16 crude oils and 41 effluents samples from a petroleum refinery. The specific objective of this study was to get information on the behavior of selenium (Se) and its species along the different processes of generation and treatment of the effluents.Multielemental characterization of effluents by ICP-MS revealed a complex composition of most of them, with high salinity and potential spectral and non spectral interferents present. For this reason, a critical reassessment of the analytical techniques for the determination of total Se and its species was necessary. DRC-ICP-MS and ETV-ICPMS, using CH4 as cell reaction gas, showed their potential for the determination of Se with better detection limits (about 0,05 ug L-1), but also their limitations for the analysis of effluents with high salinity. A large variability in the concentration of Se was observed in the 16 analysed crude oil samples (< 10 ug kg-1 Se until up to 960 ug kg-1), which may explain also the varying concentrations measured in the effluents. Highest concentrations of selenium were measured in samples from the treatment unit for acid waters (up to 1.714 ug L-1). The predominance of selenocyanate (SeCN-1) was confirmed in most of the effluent samples analysed, but also several other species with retention times different from Se(IV), Se(VI) e SeCN - were observed, especially in samples from the treatment plant. Colloidal Se (Seº) was identified in acid waters, probable formed by decomposition of SeCN - or other unstable species under these conditions. Laboratory experiments with selenocyanate solutions confirmed this hypothesis. The speciation profile of samples collected at the same point, but at different time intervals, showed significant variations, not allowing easy comparison of the results obtained in this work with those of other authors.

Estudo da aplicação de UV/FENTON (Fe2+/H2O2) no tratamento de efluentes de laticínios / Study of the Application of UV/Fenton (Fe2+ + H2O2) in the Treatment of Dairy Effluent.

O efluente lácteo é o resíduo obtido no beneficiamento do leite e seus derivados, sendo considerado um passivo de alto poder poluidor. Sem o devido tratamento, quando lançado nos rios compromete a sobrevivência da biota como um todo. O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em avaliar a eficiência e aplicação do processo Foto-Fenton, seguido por um tratamento biológico (lodo ativado), para a redução da carga orgânica do efluente em questão. A caracterização do efluente lácteo in natura e tratado foi realizada empregando-se métodos estabelecidos e otimizados [DQO, COT, DBO5, Nitrogênio (orgânico e amoniacal), Fósforo total, Ferro, e Sólidos (ST, STF, STV), fenol, análise de elementos via absorção atômica]. Por meio de planejamentos estatísticos - Taguchi, Box-Behnken e fatorial completo - foram determinados os melhores experimentos posteriores aos tratamentos fotocatalíticos e biológico, tendo como variável resposta a redução percentual de COT. Após o processo fotocatalítico, a amostra do melhor experimento foi tratada por um processo biológico (Sistema Lodo Ativado SLA), a fim de verificar a eficiência de degradação da matéria orgânica do efluente estudado através do sistema conjugado (POA- SLA). O sistema híbrido que apresentou maior eficiência teve como variáveis do processo de tratamento fotoquímico: pH = 3,5; Temperatura = 30 ºC; reagente Fenton ( 35 g H2O2 + 3,6 g Fe2+ ) e potência de radiação ultravioleta de 28 W, para um tempo de reação de 60 minutos. Para o tratamento biológico por lodo ativado, os melhores níveis das variáveis foram realizados em pH = 8 e concentração de lodo de 3,0 g L-1. Os resultados para o tratamento híbrido apresentou percentuais de reduções para COT = 94 %, DQO = 97 % e DBO = 83 %. / The dairy effluent is the residue obtained from the improvement of milk and its derivatives, being considered a high pollutant. Without the due treatment, when thrown in the rivers it puts in risk the survival of the biota as a whole. The objective of this work consisted of evaluating the efficiency and application of the process photo-Fenton followed by a biological (activated sludge) treatment for the reduction of the organic load of the effluent. The characterization of the dairy effluent in natura and treated was accomplished using established methods [COD, TOC, BOD5, Nitrogen (organic and amoniacal), Total Phosphorus, Iron, and Solids (TS, FTS, VTS), phenol, analysis of elements through atomic absorption]. Through statistical designs, Taguchi, Box-Behnken and Full Factorial, the best experiments were determined for the photocatalytic and biological treatments having the reduction of TOC as their response. After the photocatalytic process, the sample of the best experiment was treated by a biological process in order to verify the efficiency of degradation of the organic matter of the effluent studied through the conjugated (AOP - AS) system. The hybrid system that presented larger efficiency had as factors of the photochemical treatment: pH = 3,5, temperature = 30 ºC, Fenton\'s reagent (35g H2O2 + 3,6 g Fe2+) and potency of ultraviolet radiation of 28 W, for 60 minutes of reaction time. As for the biological treatment, it was accomplished in pH = 8 and concentration of sludge of 3g L-1. Obtained were of the hybrid system the percentage of reductions of TOC = 94 %, COD = 97 % and BOD = 83 %.

Em conseqüência da constatação do consumo elevado de águas nas indústrias sucroalcoleiras, gerando efluentes líquidos que impactam o meio ambiente, considerando os avanços na implantação da cobrança pelo uso da água, este trabalho aborda várias alternativas de minimização e reuso de águas nas indústrias sucroalcooleiras, objetivando a redução da poluição na fonte e minimização da captação de água superficial, reutilizando os efluentes dentro do processo produtivo. Também são apresentados os resultados de um estudo de caso realizado em uma indústria, na qual foi realizada uma pesquisa do processo industrial, para determinar o consumo de água e a qualidade de efluentes e propor alternativas para minimização da captação de água e geração de efluentes. / It is a fact that the sugar and ethanol industry in Brazil has a high level of water consumption and consequent production of effluents, with a negative impact to the environment. Also, the environmental legislation indicates a continuous raise in the charge for the usage of water from natural sources. As a consequence of the present situation, this work brings up several alternatives for the minimization and reuse of water at sugar and ethanol industries, aiming the reduction of pollutants at their source and the minimization of water uptake from the available supplies, by reusing the effluents inside the production process itself. It is also presented the results from a case study carried out in an industry where the production process was analyzed in the point-of-view of water usage and effluent generation. Alternatives for water uptake and effluent generation minimization are therefore proposed.

O objetivo principal deste estudo foi verificar a dinâmica espaço-temporal das variáveis limnológicas de um sistema de áreas alagáveis naturais, em microbacia no Vale do Ribeira de Iguape, rio Jacupiranguinha, sob influências de pulsos hidrológicos distintos, para inferir a capacidade destes sistemas em depurar e ou aprisionar carga de nutrientes potencialmente poluidoras que aportam nestas áreas. Para tanto, foram selecionados 11 pontos de amostragem: 1 e 2 no rio Jacupiranguinha; 3 no córrego Serrana; 4 a 10 no sistema de áreas alagáveis; e 11 saída do sistema, próximo ao rio Jacupiranguinha. Amostras de água foram coletadas em 4 períodos, em todas as estações de coleta, e determinadas as concentrações de nutrientes, DBO, DQO, coliformes fecais e totais. No sedimento foram determinadas as concentrações de nitrogênio total, fósforo total e matéria orgânica. Nas estações do sistema de áreas alagáveis foram coletadas macrófitas aquáticas. Medidas de temperatura, condutividade elétrica, pH, OD foram realizadas utilizando-se sonda multiparamétrica. Realizou-se um levantamento topográfico, estudo batimétrico na planície e foram instaladas réguas hidrométricas na área. As vazões e os níveis hidrométricos do rio Jacupiranguinha tiveram relação direta com a precipitação. As lagoas da planície não apresentam comunicação permanente com o rio, são necessários valores acima de 2,47 m para que ocorra o transbordamento e, consequentemente, a fertilização do sistema de áreas alagáveis. Com a utilização do software PULSO foram observados 5 e 3 pulsos completos, nas cotas topográficas 2,47 m e 2,97 m, respectivamente. A duração de ambas as fases dos pulsos (potamofase e limnofase) foram diferentes, a limnofase prevaleceu no período estudado. O regime de pulsos parece ter um efeito homogeinizador no sistema. Diferenças espaciais e sazonais foram observadas nas variáveis limnológicas da água. O sedimento não apresentou diferenças sazonais e espaciais significativas, entretanto, mostrou-se o compartimento de maior armazenamento de nitrogênio, fósforo e matéria orgânica nas estações das lagoas I e II. Números mais elevados de coliformes foram registrados nos pontos 1 e 2. As macrófitas aquáticas presentes no sistema de áreas alagáveis apresentaram importante participação na determinação dos padrões de ciclagem e aprisionamento de nitrogênio e fósforo total, pois estocam quantidades significativas destes nutrientes em sua biomassa. Em termos de reduções de cargas, no período seco, o sistema de áreas alagáveis apresentou reduções consideráveis levando em consideração a série nitrogenada, fosfatada e DBO. Assim, o regime de pulso mantém a conectividade do rio Jacupiranguinha com o sistema de áreas alagáveis e determinam a dinâmica dos fatores abióticos e bióticos, fundamentais para que esse sistema possa funcionar como armazenador e ou depurador de cargas poluidoras advindas deste rio. Entretanto, recomenda-se a construção de sistema de áreas alagáveis artificial para a complementação do tratamento de esgoto existente na área. / The aim of this study was to verify the spatial and temporal dynamics of natural wetland limnological variables, in Jacupiranguinha river, a micro basin from Ribeira de Iguape Valley, under distinct hydrological pulses. This was made to infer these systems capacity in depurating or retaining potentially polluting nutrients in wetlands. It was selected 11 sample points: 1 and 2 in Jacupiranguinha river; 3 in Serrana’s brook; 4 to 10 in wetland system and 11 in the exit of the system, next to Jacupiranguinha river. Samples were collected in four different periods for nutrients determination, BOD, COD, fecal and total coliforms analysis. In sediment was determined nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations and organic matter. It was collected aquatic macrophytes too. Temperature, electric conductivity, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured with YSI probe. Topography was determined and a batimetric study was made in floodplain; besides, it was installed hydrometric rulers in the area. Discharge and hydrometric levels of Jacupiranguinha river were positively related with precipitation. The floodplain ponds were not permanently connected with fluvial course; it is necessary values above 2,47 meters to overflow the wetland and connect it with the river. With the software PULSO was observed 5 and 3 complete pulses, with respectively 2,47 m and 2,97 m of topographic level. Duration of pulse phases (potamophase and limnophase) was different, and limnophase had predominated. Pulse regime seems to homogenize the system. Seasonal and spatial differences were observed in water limnological variables. The differences in sediment were not significant; however it showed the higher nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter concentrations in the two ponds. Higher coliform concentrations were registered in points 1 and 2. The aquatic macrophytes present in the studied wetland were very important in nitrogen and phosphorus cycle and retention of these nutrients in their biomass. In terms of load reduction, nitrogen, phosphorus and BOD were considerable reduced in dry season. Thus, pulse regime maintains the wetland connected with Jacupiranguinha river and guide the biotic and abiotic factors dynamics, very important factors for a better operation of the system, serving as nutrient storage and depurative. However, we recommend the construction of an artificial wetland system to complement the waste treatment in the studied area.
