Concertino for Tuba, Winds, and Percussion

Concertino for Tuba, Winds, and Percussion is a work for solo tuba and an ensemble consisting of two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoon, four horns, two trumpets, two trombones, bass trombone, and three percussionists. The percussionists play small, medium, and large suspended cymbals, triangle, tam tam, metal wind chimes, five tom toms, snare drum, tenor drum, bass drum, two sets of two timbales, five temple blocks, maracas, glockenspiel, vibraphone, chimes, xylophone, marimba, and five timpani. The three movements of the work follow the arrangement of the standard concerto format (fast-slow-fast). The lengths of the movements are approximately four minutes and fifteen seconds, two minutes and twenty-five seconds, and four minutes and ten seconds respectively. The total duration of Concertino is about eleven minutes.

Kinetico for Chamber Wind Ensemble

This single movement work is written for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 3 clarinets in Bb, bass clarinet in Bb, 2 bassoons, alto saxophone in Eb, 2 horns in F, 2 trumpets in Bb, trombone, euphonium, tuba, contra bass, and 3 percussion. The approximate length is eight minutes. Both traditional and proportional systems of notation are employed. The entire piece is freely chromatic with some implications of whole tone and other nondiatonic scales. The harmonies are tertian yet have no functional tonal basis. Changing meters with asymmetrical divisions are used in all sections except C and E, which have time indications (in seconds) for each measure with subdivisions to aid the conductor. There are seven major formal divisions: A B transition C retransition A' D E.

Inferring Gene Regulatory Networks from Expression Data using Ensemble Methods

High-throughput technologies for measuring gene expression made inferring of the genome-wide Gene Regulatory Networks an active field of research. Reverse-engineering of systems of transcriptional regulations became an important challenge in molecular and computational biology. Because such systems model dependencies between genes, they are important in understanding of cell behavior, and can potentially turn observed expression data into the new biological knowledge and practical applications. In this dissertation we introduce a set of algorithms, which infer networks of transcriptional regulations from variety of expression profiles with superior accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art techniques. The proposed methods make use of ensembles of trees, which became popular in many scientific fields, including genetics and bioinformatics. However, originally they were motivated from the perspective of classification, regression, and feature selection theory. In this study we exploit their relative variable importance measure as an indication of the presence or absence of a regulatory interaction between genes. We further analyze their predictions on a set of the universally recognized benchmark expression data sets, and achieve favorable results in compare with the state-of-the-art algorithms.

The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is a reliable data assimilation tool for high-dimensional meteorological problems. On the other hand, the EnKF can be interpreted as a particle filter, and particle filters (PF) collapse in high-dimensional problems. We explain that these seemingly contradictory statements offer insights about how PF function in certain high-dimensional problems, and in particular support recent efforts in meteorology to 'localize' particle filters, i.e. to restrict the influence of an observation to its neighbourhood.

Att ta plats i musik : ensembleundervisning utifrån genusperspektiv

Ofta i media står det att tjejer måste våga ta mer plats, detta förekommer bland annat i sammanhang som handlar om pop-/rockmusik. Att ta plats kan göras på flera olika sätt, både audiellt, kroppsligt och kunskapsmässigt men också rumsligt (Björck, 2011). Uppdelningen i musik mellan vilka som spelar vilka instrument är heller inte jämn mellan tjejer och killar (Olofsson 2012; Bladh 2008; Jacobson, 2013). Denna uppsats handlar om ensembleundervisning i gymnasiet utifrån ett genusperspektiv med fokus på platstagande men också bemötande lärare–elev. Empirin har tagits fram med hjälp av deltagande observation samt filmning av ensemblelektioner och uppspel. Resultatet visar att skillnaden i kroppsligt och kunskapsmässigt platstagande skilde mycket bland eleverna men inte generellt mellan könen. I audiellt platstagande var det dock en viss skillnad, tjejerna tog där för sig mindre genom att de generellt hade lägre ljudvolym eller spelade försiktigare. En viktig aspekt av resultatet att ta med i framtiden är att det gör skillnad att jobba med jämställdhet, att alla ska ta plats, och att elever får både manliga och kvinnliga förebilder för att inte instrument eller genrer ska kopplas ihop med kön, vilket det delvis gör idag. Skolan som observerades i denna undersökning har gjort just det, jobbat på ett medvetet sätt kring könsroller.

Predicting Patient Satisfaction With Ensemble Methods

Health plans are constantly seeking ways to assess and improve the quality of patient experience in various ambulatory and institutional settings. Standardized surveys are a common tool used to gather data about patient experience, and a useful measurement taken from these surveys is known as the Net Promoter Score (NPS). This score represents the extent to which a patient would, or would not, recommend his or her physician on a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 corresponds to "Extremely unlikely" and 10 to "Extremely likely". A large national health plan utilized automated calls to distribute such a survey to its members and was interested in understanding what factors contributed to a patient's satisfaction. Additionally, they were interested in whether or not NPS could be predicted using responses from other questions on the survey, along with demographic data. When the distribution of various predictors was compared between the less satisfied and highly satisfied members, there was significant overlap, indicating that not even the Bayes Classifier could successfully differentiate between these members. Moreover, the highly imbalanced proportion of NPS responses resulted in initial poor prediction accuracy. Thus, due to the non-linear structure of the data, and high number of categorical predictors, we have leveraged flexible methods, such as decision trees, bagging, and random forests, for modeling and prediction. We further altered the prediction step in the random forest algorithm in order to account for the imbalanced structure of the data.

Ngqoko throat singing: the search for an effective musical notation

Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, 2008 / This report forms part of the output of a research team investigating the phenomenon of overtone singing as practiced by the women of the Ngqoko Women’s Ensemble in the village of Ngqoko outside the town of Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This essay examines various systems of musical notation in terms of their possible application in the transcription process of overtone singing as found amongst these women. A selection of their music is transcribed using the formulated notational systems and the effectiveness of these systems is compared. A recommendation as to which system of notation is most effective for documenting this type of music is made. Utilising the soundworld of the Ngqoko recordings, an original piece of music is composed as part of this submission.

L'objet d'étude de cette thèse est une mesure infinie sur les boucles (lacets) naturellement associée à une large classe de processus de Markov et les processus ponctuels de Poisson d'intensité proportionnelle à cette mesure (paramètre d'intensité alpha>0). Ces processus ponctuels de Poisson portent le nom d'ensembles poissoniens de boucles markoviennes ou de soupes de boucles. La mesure sur les boucles est covariante par un certain nombre de transformations sur les processus de Markov, par exemple le changement de temps.Dans le cadre de soupe de boucles brownienne à l'intérieur d'un sous-domaine ouvert propre simplement connexe de C, il a été montré que les contours extérieurs des amas extérieurs de boucles sont, pour alpha<=1/2, des Conformal Loop Ensembles CLE(kappa), kappa dans (8/3,4]. D'autre part il a été montré pour une large classe de processus de Markov symétriques que lorsque alpha=1/2, le champ d'occupation d'une soupe de boucle (somme des temps passés par les boucles aux dessus des points) est le carré du champ libre gaussien. J'ai étudié d'abord les soupes de boucles associés aux processus de diffusion unidimensionnels, notamment leur champ d'occupation dont les zéros délimitent dans ce cas les amas de boucles. Puis j'ai étudié les soupes de boucles sur graphe discret ainsi que sur graphe métrique (arêtes remplacés par des fils continus). Sur graphe métrique on a d'une part une géométrie non triviale pour les boucles et d'autre part on a comme dans le cas unidimensionnel continu la propriété que les zéros du champ d'occupation délimitent les amas des boucles. En combinant les graphes métriques et l'isomorphisme avec le champ libre gaussien j'ai montré que alpha=1/2 est le paramètre d'intensité critique pour la percolation par soupe de boucles de marche aléatoire sur le demi plan discret Z*N (existence ou non d'un amas infini) et que pour alpha<=1/2 la limite d'échelle des contours extérieurs des amas extérieurs sur Z*N est un CLE(kappa) dans le demi-plan continu. / In this thesis I study an infinite measure on loops naturally associated to a wide range of Markovian processes and the Poisson point processes of intensity proportional to this measure (intensity parameter alpha>0). This Poissson point processes are called Poisson ensembles of Markov loops or loop soups. The measure on loops is covariant with some transformation on Markovian processes, for instance the change of time. In the setting of Brownian loop soups inside a proper open simply connected domain of C it was shown that the outer boundaries of outermost clusters of loops are, for alpha1/2, Conformal Loop Ensembles CLE(kappa), kappa in (8/3,4]. Besides, it was shown for a wide range of symmetric Markovian processes that for alpha=1/2 the occupation field of a loop soup (the sum of times spent by loops over points) is the square of the Gaussian free field. First I studied the loop soups associated to one-dimensional diffusions, and particularly the occupation field and its zeroes that delimit in this case the clusters of loops. Then I studied the loop soups on discrete graphs and metric graphs (edges replaced by continuous lines). On a metric graph on one hand the loops have a non-trivial geometry and on the other hand one has the same property as in the setting of one-dimensional diffusions that the zeroes of the occupation field delimit the clusters of loops. By combing metric graphs and the isomorphism with the Gaussian free field I have shown that alpha=1/2 is the critical parameter for random walk loop soup percolation on the discrete half-plane Z*N (existence or not of an infinite cluster of loops) and that for alpha<= 1/2 the scaling limit of outer boundaries of outermost clusters on Z*N is a CLE(kappa) on the continuum half plane.
