A Hybrid Ensemble Kalman Filter for Nonlinear Dynamics

Watanabe, Shingo 2009 December 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, we propose two novel approaches for hybrid Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) to overcome limitations of the traditional EnKF. The first approach is to swap the ensemble mean for the ensemble mode estimation to improve the covariance calculation in EnKF. The second approach is a coarse scale permeability constraint while updating in EnKF. Both hybrid EnKF approaches are coupled with the streamline based Generalized Travel Time Inversion (GTTI) algorithm for periodic updating of the mean of the ensemble and to sequentially update the ensemble in a hybrid fashion. Through the development of the hybrid EnKF algorithm, the characteristics of the EnKF are also investigated. We found that the limits of the updated values constrain the assimilation results significantly and it is important to assess the measurement error variance to have a proper balance between preserving the prior information and the observation data misfit. Overshooting problems can be mitigated with the streamline based covariance localizations and normal score transformation of the parameters to support the Gaussian error statistics. The swapping mean and mode estimation approach can give us a better matching of the data as long as the mode solution of the inversion process is satisfactory in terms of matching the observation trajectory. The coarse scale permeability constrained hybrid approach gives us better parameter estimation in terms of capturing the main trend of the permeability field and each ensemble member is driven to the posterior mode solution from the inversion process. However the WWCT responses and pressure responses need to be captured through the inversion process to generate physically plausible coarse scale permeability data to constrain hybrid EnKF updating. Uncertainty quantification methods for EnKF were developed to verify the performance of the proposed hybrid EnKF compared to the traditional EnKF. The results show better assimilation quality through a sequence of updating and a stable solution is demonstrated. The potential of the proposed hybrid approaches are promising through the synthetic examples and a field scale application.

Holiday in reality : a suite for jazz chamber ensemble in five movements

Renter, David Alan 29 August 2008 (has links)
Holiday in Reality is a five-movement suite for jazz chamber ensemble utilizing strings, brass, woodwinds and jazz rhythm section that provide a context for interplay with the tenor saxophone. The intent was to compose a series of musical vignettes exploring some of the possibilities of integrating jazz and classical idioms, with the goal of fusing these genres into a unified whole. The title Holiday in Reality is the name of a poem written by American poet Wallace Stevens. In this poem, Stevens depicts the interaction between the mind and imagination as a series of spontaneous events. When viewed within a creative context, his viewpoint of mind and imagination are well suited to inspire music composition and improvisation. The analysis of this suite provides a general descriptive overview of the form, harmony, and thematic development in each movement, offering a look into the rationale behind the music's architecture. / text

L'entreprise de séduction

Gilbert, Nicolas, 1979- January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation consists of two parts. The first and main part is the score of L 'entreprise de seduction, a 22-minute work for solo cello and instrumental ensemble [1011, 1010, percussion (1 player), piano, 2111], along with a recording on compact disc. The second part is an accompanying analytical text about the work. In the text, after a short description of the project, of its objectives and original contribution, we discuss the theoretical basis of my compositional approach. This approach stands on the fundamental structural independence of poiesis and esthesis, and leads to a musical aesthetics favouring formal transparency and seeking an active listening attitude. Two sets of compositional techniques are then introduced: techniques using the 12-tone row and techniques based on chance operations. We observe that those techniques all endeavour to balance systematicism and intuition to the greater profit of musical expression. We then proceed to a detailed analysis of L 'entreprise de seduction revealing its main musical material and processes. The text concludes with a few overall comments and by a discussion of the possible impact of this composition on my future projects.

Grow a Show: Considerations in Creating Entertaining Performances for the Modern Chamber Ensemble

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This paper is the writing component of a project the author under took to create an entertaining program for a chamber ensemble. It discusses ways for chamber ensembles to create entertaining concert programs for today's audiences. Information was gathered by analyzing four interesting and successful groups--The Canadian Brass, Mnozil Brass, Les Trompettes de Lyon, and The Blue Man Group--and identifying common traits. These traits help facilitate the ultimate goal of making connections with audiences and include originality, comedy, choreography, memorization, continuous presentation, musical appeal, high quality presentations, and the proper personnel. These attributes were then implemented into the author's experimental group, the Omni Brass Ensemble, for testing with live audiences. Materials were used from published interviews, articles, newspapers, ensemble websites, and recordings of their performances. From the author's performances with the Omni Brass Ensemble, indications are that these findings work with live audiences. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012
