Holistic Learning for Multi-Target and Network Monitoring Problems

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Technological advances have enabled the generation and collection of various data from complex systems, thus, creating ample opportunity to integrate knowledge in many decision making applications. This dissertation introduces holistic learning as the integration of a comprehensive set of relationships that are used towards the learning objective. The holistic view of the problem allows for richer learning from data and, thereby, improves decision making. The first topic of this dissertation is the prediction of several target attributes using a common set of predictor attributes. In a holistic learning approach, the relationships between target attributes are embedded into the learning algorithm created in this dissertation. Specifically, a novel tree based ensemble that leverages the relationships between target attributes towards constructing a diverse, yet strong, model is proposed. The method is justified through its connection to existing methods and experimental evaluations on synthetic and real data. The second topic pertains to monitoring complex systems that are modeled as networks. Such systems present a rich set of attributes and relationships for which holistic learning is important. In social networks, for example, in addition to friendship ties, various attributes concerning the users' gender, age, topic of messages, time of messages, etc. are collected. A restricted form of monitoring fails to take the relationships of multiple attributes into account, whereas the holistic view embeds such relationships in the monitoring methods. The focus is on the difficult task to detect a change that might only impact a small subset of the network and only occur in a sub-region of the high-dimensional space of the network attributes. One contribution is a monitoring algorithm based on a network statistical model. Another contribution is a transactional model that transforms the task into an expedient structure for machine learning, along with a generalizable algorithm to monitor the attributed network. A learning step in this algorithm adapts to changes that may only be local to sub-regions (with a broader potential for other learning tasks). Diagnostic tools to interpret the change are provided. This robust, generalizable, holistic monitoring method is elaborated on synthetic and real networks. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Industrial Engineering 2014

Symphonic Movement: On Works of H. P. Lovecraft

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Symphonic Movement: On Works of H. P. Lovecraft is a single movement composition for wind band lasting approximately 11 minutes. The instrumentation for the work is as follows: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 4 horns, 4 trumpets, 2 trombones, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba, string bass, timpani, 5 percussionists, and piano. Symphonic Movement: On Works of H. P. Lovecraft is inspired by the horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft was famous for his ability to create a sense of creeping dread and terror in his stories. The composition evokes this dark atmosphere and uses a combination of melodic, harmonic, and orchestrational devices to imitate this ambience. The primary musical material of the work is a melody consisting of all twelve tones. The composition explores this melody through motivic development and phrase segmentation derived from the source material. This heavy use of chromaticism helps to create a dissonant and brooding atmosphere throughout. The work fluctuates between soft, lyrical passages and loud, cacophonous sections. The alternation of exposed melodic lines with large bombastic climaxes is a major component of the overall structure of the composition. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2016

Rhythm For Percussion Ensemble and Narrator

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Rhythm is a work for percussion ensemble and narrator. The percussion ensemble includes five percussionists who each play multiple instruments. The narrator recites quotes from the book Meter as Rhythm by Dr. Christopher Hasty. The piece is in six parts with a short introduction (mm. 1-5). The structure is delineated by the quotes from Meter as Rhythm. The narrator describes an aspect of rhythm at the beginning of each section and the quote is sonically realized through the percussion ensemble. This piece experiments with different timbres and rhythmic motives. Timbral variety is achieved through grouping instruments into woods, metals, and membranes and using combinations of those groups to delineate different sections and ideas. The rhythmic motives are based on the numbers 3, 5, and 7, and appear as rhythmic values, phrase lengths, and number of repetitions. The first section states a definition of rhythm and contains all timbres and motives contained within the composition. The piece then explores the relativity of time and is represented by drums changing the speed of their notes. The third section discusses rhythm as repetition and is illustrated by repetitive rhythmic motives. The text then features rhythm as a subjective human experience and is reflected through polyrhythms played between ensemble members. What follows is a description of meter as a temporal measurement that is unchanged by rhythmic activity. By bringing back previous motives, this section reveals that all of the motives work within the same meter. In the final section, the performers play various subdivisions of the beat to show different aspects of proportion by dividing the beat in several ways. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Music 2018

Genrer inom ensemblespel på gymnasiet : Lärare och elevers val av repertoar / Genres in ensemble lessons in high school : Teachers and pupils choice of repertoire

Sjöqvist, Carl January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to research which music is being played during ensemble lessons, how teachers relate to the syllabus, and lastly how teachers work to integrate music from different cultures and genres into their lessons. This study is of a qualitative nature and the method that has been used are interviews. Three interviews have been conducted with three music teachers from different schools. The results of this study show that music from other cultures than the Afro-American music tradition is barely being played in school, a large contributing factor is that the teachers do not have knowledge to teach music from other music traditions than the Afro-American tradition. The result state that students have influence regarding what music is being played at the ensemble lessons, which leads to the loss of many genres due to a democratic voting system regarding which songs to play. The students usually pick music from modern pop and rock music genre.

Improving hydrometeorologic numerical weather prediction forecast value via bias correction and ensemble analysis

McCollor, Douglas 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation describes research designed to enhance hydrometeorological forecasts. The objective of the research is to deliver an optimal methodology to produce reliable, skillful and economically valuable probabilistic temperature and precipitation forecasts. Weather plays a dominant role for energy companies relying on forecasts of watershed precipitation and temperature to drive reservoir models, and forecasts of temperatures to meet energy demand requirements. Extraordinary precipitation events and temperature extremes involve consequential water- and power-management decisions. This research compared weighted-average, recursive, and model output statistics bias-correction methods and determined optimal window-length to calibrate temperature and precipitation forecasts. The research evaluated seven different methods for daily maximum and minimum temperature forecasts, and three different methods for daily quantitative precipitation forecasts, within a region of complex terrain in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. This research then examined ensemble prediction system design by assessing a three-model suite of multi-resolution limited area mesoscale models. The research employed two different economic models to investigate the ensemble design that produced the highest-quality, most valuable forecasts. The best post-processing methods for temperature forecasts included moving-weighted average methods and a Kalman filter method. The optimal window-length proved to be 14 days. The best post-processing methods for achieving mass balance in quantitative precipitation forecasts were a moving-average method and the best easy systematic estimator method. The optimal window-length for moving-average quantitative precipitation forecasts was 40 days. The best ensemble configuration incorporated all resolution members from all three models. A cost/loss model adapted specifically for the hydro-electric energy sector indicated that operators managing rainfall-dominated, high-head reservoirs should lower their reservoir with relatively low probabilities of forecast precipitation. A reservoir-operation model based on decision theory and variable energy pricing showed that applying an ensemble-average or full-ensemble precipitation forecast provided a much greater profit than using only a single deterministic high-resolution forecast. Finally, a bias-corrected super-ensemble prediction system was designed to produce probabilistic temperature forecasts for ten cities in western North America. The system exhibited skill and value nine days into the future when using the ensemble average, and 12 days into the future when employing the full ensemble forecast. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate

Mioc, Roxana Consuela January 2012 (has links)

Överväganden i ensembleundervisning : Konceptioner inom musikämnet hos musiklärare i grundskolan

Jansson, Arvid January 2017 (has links)

Jämställdhet i ensembleundervisning : En kvalitativ studie om genusmönster i ensembleundervisning på gymnasiet / Gender equality in ensemble studies : A qualitative study of gender patterns in ensemble studies in upper secondary school

Zhorobaev, Isaak January 2021 (has links)
