Activism or Extractivism: Indigenous Land Struggles in Eastern Bolivia

Shenkin, Evan 06 September 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of the tensions between the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) political party, nongovernmental organizations (NGO), and indigenous social movement struggles for territorial autonomy. This study takes a multiscale approach by examining (1) the emergence of competing indigenous leadership organizations, (2) state repression of civil society groups, and (3) strategic indigenous-NGO alliances to preserve Native Community Lands (Tierra Comunitaria de Orígen, TCOs). At the community level, the study examines new organizations of state-aligned indigenous groups that represent extractive interests and threaten social movement cohesion. At the national level, this paper analyzes the controversial road project in the Isiboro-Sécure Indigenous Territory and National Park (TIPNIS) and similar state efforts to erode legal protections for native lands in the interests of extractivism. Analyzing the academic and public debates over indigenous politics in the Amazon, this study explores the struggle between the state and lowland indigenous groups over popular hegemony and the ability to shape international perception over indigeneity, socialism, and resource exploitation. The findings support lowland indigenous social movement claims of state repression but situate this criticism within a path dependent world system dominated by global capital.

A New Perspective on Bolivian Populism

Ramirez, Lindsay Cherith 06 1900 (has links)
viii, 64 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Since assuming office in January 2006, Bolivian President Evo Morales has been hailed as a populist by media and academic sources alike. Yet, scholarly theories have indicated that populism is unviable in office. This thesis will utilize a case study of Morales' presidency to test hypotheses of populist routinization. After establishing a working definition of populism, it will compare a baseline sample of Morales' prepresidency discourse to a second sample taken after his transition to power to determine whether the "essence" of populism has indeed been compromised. Ultimately, this thesis argues that theories of routinization are incorrect: although the characteristics of Morales' populism change after assuming the presidency, his appeals to and identification with common sense and ordinary values actually grow stronger in office. / Committee in Charge: Craig Parsons, Chair; Anna P. Ontogeny of the Hyoid Apparatus in Jamaican Fruit Bats (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) in Unraveling the Evolution of Echolocation in Bats

Carter, R. T., Stuckey, A., Adams, R. A. 01 August 2019 (has links)
How echolocation and flight evolved in modern day bats is a compelling and largely unanswered question in biology. As laryngeal echolocation in bats is typified by a bony connection between the larynx and the auditory bulla via the hyoid apparatus, we developed an evolutionary-developmental model of the hyoid to test hypotheses regarding the evolution of echolocation in bats. Using computed tomography of pre- and postnatal Jamaican fruit bats (Artibeus jamaicensis), we showed that much of the hyoid apparatus was ossified prior to parturition. This includes the stereotypical articulation of the stylohyal bone with the auditory bulla found in laryngeal echolocating bats, where the cranial end of the stylohyal is flattened and wraps around the auditory bulla. Postnatally, thyrohyal ossification coincided with the development of increased echolocation call emission rate and the development of flight. We contend that the stepwise development of the hyoid apparatus of A. jamaicensis presented here serves as a proxy for the series of transitional forms that lead to the modern day hyoid apparatus and its cranial articulation with the auditory bulla in modern day laryngeally echolocating bats.

Development of an evolutionary algorithm for crystal structure prediction / Entwicklung eines evolutionären Algorithmus zur Kristallstrukturvorhersage

Bahmann, Silvia 21 May 2014 (has links) (PDF)

Diversité fonctionnelle des gènes impliqués dans le contrôle de l'architecture paniculaire chez le riz / Functional diversity of genes involved in rice panicle architecture

Ta, Kim Nhung 05 December 2014 (has links)
Rice panicle architecture is one of the most important morphological traits specifying rice yield potential, which was under selection during rice domestication. A panicle is a branched structure composed of a rachis, primary branches, higher order branches (i.e. secondary and tertiary branches) and finally spikelets. This morphology, depending on the activity of axillary meristems during its development, shows a wide diversity in both inter-specific (i.e. crops vs. wild-relatives) and intra-specific (Asian or/and African rice) levels. Several important genes/QTLs have been characterized in Oryza sativa as controlling panicle architecture by regulating meristem fate, cell division and hormone signaling. However the mechanisms related to rice panicle diversity and its evolution in the context of domestication are still largely unknown. During my PhD, I mainly investigated the histological and molecular bases of panicle diversity between the African species Oryza glaberrima and its wild-relative Oryza barthii. I analyzed the expression patterns of orthologs of O. sativa landmark genes related to panicle development and was involved in small RNA transcriptomic analysis in early stages of panicle development. This work revealed a high conservation of the spatial expression pattern of the landmarks genes studied but have highlighted a differential timing and level of the expression of these genes during the panicle development between two species. The genes promoting meristem activity were upper-accumulated over a longer period during the panicle development in the crop species, whereas the gene promoting spikelet/floret meristem fate behaved in opposite way. This work also has shown similar heterochronic alteration of the expression of members of the miR2118-triggered 21-nt phased siRNA pathway, known to be involved in male gametogenesis. Together, these findings suggest that variation of panicle complexity in African rice may rely on heterochronic changes in branching activity as well as spikelet/floret meristem determinacy.

Comparative functional analysis of WOX genes during flower development in Petunia and Arabidopsis / Analyse comparative fonctionnelle des gènes WOX impliqués dans le développement de la fleur chez Petunia et Arabidopsis

Costanzo, Enrico 05 November 2015 (has links)
In the Kingdom of Plants, the emergence of flowers was a crucial step in their ability to colonize a large variety of ecological niches on our planet. The two species Petunia x hybrida and Arabidopsis thaliana represent two major groups of flowering plants. In this work, we have shown that HOMEOBOX genes from the WOX family (Wuschel homeoboxes) are heavily involved in polar organ development (such as leaves and sepals, petals, and carpels at the flower level). The maw mawb double mutant in Petunia displays string-like petals, with consequent disappearance of the floral tube. Moreover, we found that these two genes genetically interact with genes from a different family (the MADS family) in ovule identity (ovules are the structures from which seeds develop). We have also shown that other genes from the WOX family are involved in development of a different kind of structures in Petunia: the trichomes. Trichomes are involved in different tasks, protecting the plant from pathogens or abiotic stress. Thanks to functional genetics studies, we have shown functional genetic recruitment of these WOX genes among different plant organs and among different species. This PhD thesis provides evidence for the importance of the WOX family in Evo-Devo studies. Eventually, we unravelled genetic networks controlled by MAW and MAWB trough RNA-Seq analysis.

Modèle de développement et évolution du patron dentaire chez les rongeurs actuels et fossiles : radiation adaptative et émergence de phénotype : le cas des Arvicolinae (Rodentia) / Evolutionary and developmental hypotheses in rodent dentition through time : the adaptive radiation of Arvicolinae (Rodentia)

Labonne, Gaëlle 13 May 2014 (has links)
The evolution of mammalian dentition is defined by profound morphological modifications as occlusion and heterodonty. Among rodents, characterized by a reduced dental formula, arvicolines have a highly derived dentition, with prismatic and hypsodont molars. The aim of this Ph.D thesis is to explore various morphological innovations through developmental and adaptive aspects. Geometric morphometric methods were used on molars, incisors and mandibles to investigate the dynamics of development and evolution of dentition. A developmental model predicting molar proportions is tested and confirmed for the rodent order; it could be also extended to the premolar. The relationship between dental morphology, in particular molar proportions, and diet is complex, diet being not directly inferred from one morphological trait. Yet, covariations between molars inform on masticatory movement and thus on function. Our results confirmed that morphologies could be understood from a complex combination of historical, functional and developmental constraints. The various structures of the mandible have a complex hierarchical organization. The development of mammalian dentition is controlled by similar processes but through times, mechanisms as heterochrony may lead to a diversification of phenotypes.
