The Effects of ETS & CBAM on Cost Differences in the European Steel Industry : A Case Study on Swedish and German Long Engineering Steel Manufacturers / Eff ekterna av ETS & CBAM på Kostnadsskillnaderna i den Europeiska Stålindustrin : En Fallstudie på en Svensk och en Tysk Tillverkare av Långt Ingenjörsstål

Fahlstedt, Tim, Håkansson, Oliver January 2022 (has links)
To combat anthropogenic climate change and comply with the Paris Agreement, the EU has previously introduced its Emissions Trading System (ETS) and has now also proposed a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). While these tools may reduce emissions within the EU, and in some cases, even in other countries, they can also affect European industries in unpredictable and sometimes negative ways. One industry that is currently included in the ETS is the steel industry. While the steel industry has not been signifi cantly affected yet, as the prices for ETS allowances remain relatively low, this is likely to change as the price for allowances rises. By identifying the factors which lead to cost differences between steel manufacturers in European countries through interviews and literature and comparing the costs of two manufacturers with similar production methods, this study aimed to quantify the cost diff erences that arose due to the ETS by constructing a model capable of estimating the cost differences. Furthermore, plausible changes to the ETS were identified and developed into scenarios where the cost differences that occurred between the two companies due to the new circumstances were analyzed. Energy was found to be the biggest cause of differences in cost, followed by transport costs if one company had a location advantage due to being closer to the customer. Historically, the cost of purchasing ETS allowances was nearly negligible. However, when the price of allowances was predicted to increase, the cost difference caused by the ETS grew significantly and became almost as important for competitiveness as energy costs by the 2030s. The scenarios further affected the total cost difference, making it both decrease and increase depending on how the ETS was altered. Depending on how the EU alters the ETS in the future, the steel sectors in some countries might become more competitive, while others might lose financial viability. Great care must therefore be taken when developing the system so that European emissions can continue to decrease without putting companies in certain countries at a severe disadvantage. Furthermore, the CBAM, or other measures, must be put in place if carbon leakage is to be avoided when the prices for ETS allowances rise.

A Study of EAF Austenitic and Duplex Stainless Steelmaking Slags Characteristics

Mostafaee, Saman January 2010 (has links)
<p>The high temperature microstructure of the solid phases within the electric arc furnace (EAF) slag has a large effect on the process features such as foamability of the slag, chromium recovery, consumption of the ferroalloys and the wear rate of the refractory. The knowledge of the microstructural and compositional evolution of the slag phases during the EAF process stages is necessary for a good slag praxis.</p><p>In <strong>supplement 1</strong>, an investigation of the typical characteristics of EAF slags in the production of the AISI 304L stainless steel was carried out. In addition, compositional and microstructural evolution of the slag during the different EAF process stages was also investigated. Computational thermodynamics was also used as a tool to predict the equilibrium phases in the top slag as well as the amount of these phases at the process temperatures. Furthermore, the influence of different parameters (MgO wt%, Cr2O3 wt%, temperature and the top slag basicity) on the amount of the spinel phase in the slag was studied. In <strong>supplement 2</strong>, a novel study to characterize the electric arc furnace (EAF) slags in the production of duplex stainless steel at the process temperatures was performed. The investigation was focused on determining the microstructural and compositional evolution of the EAF slag during and at the end of the refining period.</p><p>Slag samples were collected from 14 heats of AISI 304L steel (2 slag samples per heat) and 7 heats of duplex steel (3 slags sample per heat). Simultaneously with each slag sampling, the temperature of the slag was measured. The selected slag samples were studied both using SEM-EDS and LOM. In some cases (<strong>supplement 2</strong>), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were also performed on fine-powdered samples to confirm the existence of the observed phases.</p><p>It was observed that at the process temperature and at all process stages, the stainless steel EAF slag consists mainly of liquid oxides, magnesiochromite spinel particles and metallic droplets. Under normal operation and at the final stages of the EAF, 304L steelmaking slag contains 2-6 wt% magnesiochromite spinel crystals. It was also found that, within the compositional range of the slag samples, the only critical parameter affecting the amount of solid spinel particles in the slag is the chromium oxide content. Petrographical investigation of the EAF duplex stainless steelmaking showed that, before FeSi-addition, the slag samples contain large amounts of undissolved particles and the apparent viscosity of the slag is higher, relative to the subsequent stages. In this stage, the slag also includes solid stoichiometric calcium chromite. It was also found that, after FeSi-injection into the EAF and during the refining period, the composition and the basicity of the slag in the EAF duplex steelmaking and EAF stainless steelmaking are fairly similar. This indicates that, during the refining period, the basic condition for the utilization of an EAF foaming-slag praxis, in both austenitic and duplex stainless steel cases, is the same. Depending on the slag basicity, the slag may contain perovskite and/or dicalcium silicate too. More specifically, the duplex stainless steel slag samples with a higher basicity than 1.55 found to contain perovskite crystals.</p>

Avaliação microestrutural, cinética e mecânica do comportamento de pelotas auto-redutoras a base de resíduos de aciaria elétrica contendo zinco do processo Waelz. / Microstructural evaluation, kinetic and mechanical behavior of self reducing pellet electric steelmaking waste base containing zinc by Waelz process.

Hernández Buitrago, Leidy Julieth 02 April 2018 (has links)
Steel production from scrap melting in electric arc furnaces, generates about 10 to 20 kg of waste per metric ton of molten steel, which are composed by fumes and dust containing mainly oxides of iron, zinc, calcium and lead. Thus, these residues are highly dangerous and toxic. To find ecofriendly solutions and mitigate problems of the solid waste, it was proposed to agglomerate electric steel dust (PAE) in the form of self-reducing pellets. The latter are thermally treated by the Waelz process, which consists of a rotary kiln fed by the pellets, recovering the zinc by means of reduction and oxidation metallurgical reactions. In this study, kinetic and mechanical behavior, as well as microstructural changes, were evaluated by fractional factorial design of type 3III experiments (4-2), varying: binder, reducer, temperature and binary basicity. Chemical and microstructural characterization were performed using: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction XRD, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (FRX), differential thermal analysis/thermogravimetric (DTA/TG), elemental analysis C-N-H and laser granulometric analysis. The PAE studied presented 37. 50 % of iron in the form of hematite and 19. 40 % of zinc in the form of zincite. Most of the particles showed a spherical morphology of ~1 ?m in size. Using the time-reduced method, the following models were tested: (i) spherical interface-symmetry reaction model; (ii) exponential continuous reaction model; and (ii) unreacted core model. The results obtained showed a kinetic behavior with the combination of the first two models. At 800 and 950 °C the formation of zinc oxide needles was observed, in which was detected chloride and lead impurities. Mechanical behavior studies after the heat treatments showed that the pellets agglomerated with glucose syrup and Ca(OH)2 presented the best behavior at all temperatures.

Acosta, Clóvis Dutra January 2013 (has links)
The thesis presents the methods associated with the management of the electric arc furnace (EAF) baghouse dust and ladle furnace (LF) dust. The management methods cover two broad topics: environmental management system practices and technology related factors. The EAF baghouse dust and ladle furnace (LF) dust process has the following steps: input and processing raw materials, EAF charging and melting, slag generation and removal, furnace tapping of the steel to the LF, refining in the LF, as well as the EAF dedusting system, dust recycling and final destination. The management methods were determined based on professional experience of the author, assessment of typical installations of steel plant dedusting system, bibliographies review, available technologies to EAF/LF dust destination and recycling and subject technical literature, as well technical visits undertaken. Collectively the information was used to develop two standard evaluation standard matrices which provide criteria to assess environmental management system practices and technology associated with EAF dust management. The primary goal of the assessments was to identify and prioritize areas for potential improvement - either in environmental management systems area or the technology area. The assessment results showed that steel plants which have practices with lower values, according to these matrices, should require greater effort to improve their performance, while those with good score, will require a consolidation of their routine to maintain the high level of performance already achieved. The matrices were filled by environmental experts from three steelmaking companies. Finally, as a result of this project a rigorous and reliable assessment tool was designed to evaluate the meltshop dust generation and management process and provide a quantitative answer to the following question: `Which area has achieved a higher level of development as it relates to meltshop dust management: environmental management system practices or control technology?’ The results from using this tool have shown that the performance of management practices is superior to the control technology. Furthermore, experiences captured during the assessment indicate this evaluation methodology is fully adaptable and can be applied to other processes and/or other businesses. It was clearly highlighted how knowledge and environmental intelligence are requirements to assure that the medium and long term strategies are properly aligned with the available best practices to environmental management system and control technology.

Vieira, Deisi January 2017 (has links)
Combine high productivity and lower costs is the main economical challenge of a steelmaking melt shop. Therefore, changes in the process aiming practices that result in higher efficiency of the EAF, with lower costs, occur frequently. This work evaluates an EAF process, with capacity of 62t of steel, operating with metal scrap and pig iron load. Two groups of steel heats that represents two distinct scenarios were studied. The scenarios were called Scenario I and Scenario II. In the Scenario II carbon and oxygen injection practices, limes loading practice and Shredder scrap loading amount were modified. The aim of the present work is analyze how these changes affected process parameters. The steel and slag chemical composition of two loading patterns (C and E) was compared on the scenarios. It was found that the slag mass reduces for both loading patterns. However, the basicity of the pattern C was reduced from 2.5 to 2.1 while the pattern E was maintained on 2.2 for both scenarios. The MgO saturation content of the slag is evaluated through Isothermal Solubility Diagrams. Most of the heats of the Scenario II MgO content are higher than the minimal saturation content. There was a reduction of 30% of the injected oxygen for both loading patterns and their P content increased significantly. Meanwhile, only the pattern C shows a variation on carbon content in the steel. The electric power consumption showed proportional relation to FeO and MgO content of the slag and the pattern E showed a significant increase of 10 kWh/t. The metallic yield of the patterns C and E increased 3.59 and 2.22, respectively. The scenario II showed a reduction of the Cu content in both patterns. The carbon injection amount means did not vary significantly, but, through distribution graphs, was noted a higher stability in the injection amount. For the E pattern, a minimum amount of iron in the slag was observed for the overall C/O ratio of 0,75. An analysis of the ratio of the carbon and oxygen injection during the refining period was done. It was observed a higher stability of the injections along the refining period for the Scenario II on both patterns.

Light Flicker Evaluation Of Electric Arc Furnaces Based On Novel Signal Processing Algorithms

Kose, Neslihan 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In this research work, two new flickermeters are proposed to estimate the light flicker caused by electric arc furnaces (EAFs) where the system frequency deviates significantly. In these methods, analytical expressions of the instantaneous light flicker sensation are obtained beginning from a voltage waveform and these expressions are used to obtain a flicker estimation method based on the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) flickermeter. First method is a spectral decomposition based approach using DFT to estimate the light flicker. The leakage effect of the DFT algorithm due to fundamental frequency variation is reduced by employing spectral amplitude correction procedure around the fundamental frequency. Second method is a Kalman filter based approach, in which the frequency domain components of the voltage waveform are obtained by Kalman filtering. Then these components are used to obtain the light flicker. Since the frequency decomposition is obtained by Kalman filtering, no leakage effect of the DFT is involved in case of frequency deviations which is an important advantage. Both methods are tested on both simulated data and field data obtained from three different EAF plants where the flicker level and frequency variation is considerably high. The comparison with the digital realization of the IEC flickermeter shows that the methods are successful in estimating light flicker with low computational complexity. The methods are especially useful for conditions such as disturbances and subsequent system transients where the system frequency deviates significantly, since the methods avoid the need for online sampling rate adjustment to prevent the DFT leakage effect.

Flicker Source Identification At A Point Of Common Coupling Of The Power System

Altintas, Erinc 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Voltage fluctuations under 30 Hz in the electricity grid, leads to oscillations in the light intensity that can be perceived by human eye, which is called flicker. In this thesis, the sources of the flicker at a point of common coupling is investigated. When there are more than one flicker sources connected to a PCC, individual effects of each flicker source is determined by using a new method which depends on the reactive current components of the sources. This method is mainly based on the flickermeter design defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), but uses the current variations in addition to the voltage variations to compute flicker. The proposed method is applied to several different types of loads supplied from a PCC and their flicker contributions on the busbar are investigated. Experiments are performed on field data obtained by the power quality analyzers (PQ+) developed by the National Power Quality Project and the method has been found to provide accurate results for flicker contributions of various loads. The PQ+ analyzers with the proposed flicker contribution detection algorithm are called Flicker Contribution Meters (FCM) and they will be installed at the points of the Turkish Electricity Transmission Network when required.

A Study of EAF High-Chromium Stainless Steelmaking Slags Characteristics and Foamability

Mostafaee, Saman January 2011 (has links)
A good slag practice is essential for production of a high-quality stainless steel. In addition, the electrical and material efficiency of the electric arc furnace (EAF) can considerably be improved by a good slag practice. The metallurgical properties of the slag are strongly influenced by its high-temperature microstructure. Thus, characterization of the phases within the EAF slag as well as the determination of the amount of these phases is of high importance. In addition, the knowledge about the chemical composition of the liquid slag and solid phases at the process temperatures is instrumental in developing a good slag practice. In order to study the slag in EAF high-chromium stainless steelmaking, slag samples were collected from 14 heats of AISI 304L steel (two samples per heat) and 7 heats of duplex steel (three samples per heat). The selected slag samples were petrographically studied both using scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and light optical microscopy (LOM). In some cases, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were also performed. Moreover, computational thermodynamics was used to determine the equilibrium phases in the EAF steelmaking slags at the process temperatures. In addition, parameter studies were performed on the factors influencing the equilibria.More specifically, a petrographical and thermodynamic characterization was performed on the EAF austenitic steelmaking slags. Thereafter, the microstructural evolution of the slag during the EAF duplex steelmaking process was investigated. Moreover, an investigation with focus on the total amount of precipitates within the high-chromium stainless steelmaking slags was done. Finally, the foamability of these slags was quantified and evaluated. The petrographic investigations showed that, during the refining stage, in both austenitic and duplex cases, the main constituent of the EAF slag is a melt consisting of liquid oxides. In addition, the slag samples contain solid spinel particles. However, before ferrosilicon-addition (FeSi), the slag may also contain solid stoichiometric calcium chromite. Moreover, depending on the slag basicity, the slag may contain solid dicalcium silicate at the process temperatures. The evolution of the slag during the refining stage of the EAF was graphically illustrated in the calculated isothermal phase diagrams for the slag system Al2O3-Cr2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2-TiO2.It was found that the only critical parameter affecting the amount of solid spinel particles in the slag is the chromium-oxide content. More specifically, it was shown that the amount of the spinel particles in the slag increases with an increased chromium-oxide content of the slag. It wasvialso shown that a higher basicity and a lower temperature of the slag contribute to the dicalcium silicate precipitation. In order to evaluate and quantify the foamability of the slags, the slag’s physical properties influencing its foaming index were determined. Computational thermodynamics was used as a tool to calculate the weight fractions of the solid phases within the slag at different EAF process stages. The computational thermophysics was used to estimate the viscosity of the liquid part of the slag samples at the process temperatures. The apparent viscosity of the samples was calculated by combining the above results. By estimating the density, surface tension and the foaming-gas bubble size, the foaming index of the slag samples were quantified. It could be shown that the foaming index of the EAF high-chromium stainless steelmaking slag may be on its minimum as the slag’s basicity takes a value in the range of 1.2 – 1.5. A basicity value of around 1.50 – 1.60 can be suitable for enhancing the foaming index of the slag, during the refining period in EAF high-chromium stainless steelmaking.
