AUTOMATION-INDUCED RESHORING: An Agent-based Model of the German Manufacturing Industry

The concept of ‘Industry 4.0’ signalises the rise of innovative manufacturing technologies, including industrial robots. Wider applicability of robotic automation and higher efficiency of production processes shift the profitability analysis of strategic relocation decisions. Despite the technological feasibility, diffusion of technology lowers the profitability threshold for robots. Consequently, competitive labour cost advantages, formerly motivating manufacturing firms to offshore production become less relevant. In fact, robots additionally gain importance in the case of shifted global economic realities, such as stricter environmental regulation on global trade and the convergence of the global wage gap. However, the heterogeneous levels of automation among manufacturing firms have not been taken into account when studying the macroeconomic phenomenon of reshoring. This study adds novelty by offering an agent-based perspective which has allowed insights on how the behaviour of firms, guided by simple economic rules on the micro-level, is dynamically influenced by their complex environment in regard to relocation, decision-making hypotheses. Testing various variables sensitive to initial conditions, increased environmental regulations targeting global trade and upward shifting wage levels in formerly offshore production locations have shown to be driving and inhibiting mechanisms of this socio-technical system. Therefore, the dynamic demonstrates a shift from predominantly cited economic reasoning for relocation strategies towards sustainability aspects, pressingly changing these realities on an environmental and social dimension. The popular debate is driven by increased environmental awareness and the proclaimed fear of robots killing jobs. In view of reshoring shaping the political agenda, interest in the phenomenon has recently been fuelled by the rise of populism and protectionism claiming to “bring jobs back home”.

Enabling Circular Economy with Digital Technology : A case study On the Swedish Online Secondhand Business Sellpy.

Recognizing the responsibility businesses has in sustainable development, a rising number of entrepreneurs are attempting to innovate business models together with digital technology to address environmental and societal needs. Circular business models is an example of how businesses can become more sustainable. However, there is a growing phenomenon of entrepreneurs suggesting digital platforms as a supportive element in an enterprise to enable circular features. This research aims to investigate the role of a single entrepreneur as a transition intermediary to sustainable development by using digital platforms. Additionally, this research aims to explore the success factors and challenges this entrepreneur can uncover. Contrary to most studies, this thesis adopts the entrepreneur's perspective as being a key actor in sustainable development but also as an innovative force in a socio-technical system. A case study was conducted on the Swedish online secondhand store Sellpy. The qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Given the thesis' exploratory research design, the finding can be used in further research as artifacts for more conclusive and generalizing research. The entrepreneur, as a transition intermediary, can establish valuable partnerships and networks to accelerate circulation and sustainability awareness. Additionally, the entrepreneur can influence others by spreading knowledge to engage other entrepreneurs to innovate businesses towards sustainability. The main success factors found in this case study is the approach to develop with the user community, digital ownership, skilled and diverse workforce, and partnerships with similar businesses. The challenges discovered was to maintain and find new users to enter the circular system and the external skepticism towards sustainability-oriented businesses.

Analysis and assessment of biogas production potential in Sweden for 2050

The world is about to shift from fossil fuel dependency to independency. The national agenda of Sweden has put forth future goals of becoming a zero net greenhouse gas emitter by the year 2045 and before that, having an 80 % fossil fuel independent transportation fleet by 2030. In order to achieve these goals, the form of energy used in the transport sector needs to be changed into a more renewable solution. Biogas could be part of the solution. The aim of this report has been to review earlier research regarding the future biogas potential in Sweden and to examine how realistic and practically feasible these are. Three of the substrates that has shown the highest future potential according to earlier research; energy crops, manure and black liquor has been chosen for investigating their future potential. Interviews was made with biogas researcher in Sweden as well as government employees working with biogas and other biofuels. Scenario building was another method used were the report have created four future scenarios with varying optimistically future economic and technical outcomes using more practical limitations and restrictions. The result was a combined future potential of between 0,42 – 77,54 TWh/annually from all three substrates using the values and information gathered from the interviewers regarding how to calculate the potential. The result shows that depending on how lucrative the future financial support systems and subsidies as well as how efficient the technical breakthroughs will be, biogas can become a large contributor to the transport sectors transition in becoming less fossil fuel dependent.

Socially responsible investments and shareholder engagement in the Swedish pension fund system : A case study on the Swedish AP funds

In recent years, institutional shareholders have more frequently engaged themselves in dialogue with corporations on corporate social and environmental factors (ESG factors) through a new investment strategy often referred to as socially responsible investments. The Swedish public pension funds work with socially responsible investments and shareholder engagement are based on their mandate to serve the Swedish people and to manage their retirement capital in a desirable way. Since 2019, the AP funds are also legally obliged by the AP Funds Act (2000:192) to contribute to sustainable development by their investments. The findings of this thesis suggest that shareholders can positively influence the social and environmental performance of a corporation. It suggests that shareholder engagement dialogue is an effective influence instrument to generate positive social and environmental outcomes, with an open and constructive dialogue between the shareholder and the corporation. In order to build a successful long-term relationship between the shareholder and investee, it is important for the engager to enhance the preparation and try to stay fully informed on the matters being raised to the investee. This can be achieved by the shareholder by letting the engager focus the engagement on a manageable number of corporations and sectors and by having a dialogue with several different stakeholders throughout the network such as local union trade organisations or other NGOs.

Presence and Quality of Catch and Release Information and Guidelines on Fishing Tourism Operators' Websites in Sweden

Abstract: Recreational fishing is one of popular outdoor activities and a growing business in Sweden. However, preceding researches had shown that recreational fisheries may contribute to overfishing as much as commercial fisheries. One of the ways to reduce anglers’ impact on fish populations is the practice of releasing caught fish (catch and release; C&R). C&R is often seen as an ethical and sustainable way of fishing that supports fish conservation. Anglers may obtain C&R information and guidelines from different sources, such as fishing club, fishing magazines, state agencies. As the internet is increasingly becoming an important source for anglers to obtain updated fishing information, fishing tourism operators could be a principal actor to provide C&R information and guidelines through their websites. At the same time there is lack of information on the presence and quality of C&R information at Swedish websites. As international tourists are important group of anglers that use tourism operators’ services, and due to the language limitation of the author, this study focused on websites in English language. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the presence and quality of C&R information and guidelines in English language provided by fishing tourism operators’ websites in Sweden. The study followed the quantitative content analysis approach by assigning categories and counting the frequencies in the text found on the fishing tourism operators’ websites. First, the websites were scanned to check if C&R information was present. Then, the number of clicks needed to retrieve this information was counted to measure its accessibility. Finally, a C&R information quality score was calculated by adding up scores based on different type and quality of the information found on the websites, including 12 criteria of the C&R best practice guidelines developed by Sims and Danylchuk (2017). The study found that 66 out of 151 analyzed websites provided C&R information and guidelines which generally easily  accessed (two clicks on average). However, in general the websites had a low average quality score of the C&R information and guidelines. Moreover, there was a high variability in how the information was presented on the websites, suggesting lack of standardized guidelines that fishing tourism operators could refer to. Consequently, there is a need to encourage and support more fishing tourism operators to provide a high quality C&R information and guidelines on their websites.

Nord Stream 2 project debate in light of the three pillars of the EU energy policy: security of supply, competitiveness and sustainability

Energy and its policy has been a priority for the EU since its establishment. The EU indicates the competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply to be the core pillars of energy policy, which guide energy projects and their implementations in the EU territory. Nonetheless, disagreements and different opinions on the natural gas transmission pipeline Nord Stream 2 reveal that the solidarity in terms of energy policy is not apparent. Hence, the purpose of this study is to reveal how the framings of the project are constructed by the most vocal actors - the EU institutions, Germany, Poland and Russia – in order to indicate implications of the frames to the future of the project and the EUenergy policy. The purpose of the study is achieved by adopting energy security concept as theoretical lens and frame analysis as a primary method of research. The study reveals that the actors frame the project in terms of energy security dimensions and energy security logics. The study concludes that the actors prioritize security of supply pillar to the largest extent and thus it poses complications to attain a currently core element of the EU energy policy – sustainability, and implement the NS2 project due to the lack of solidarity among actors.

Coherence between National and International Environmental Policies – the case of Sweden

Policy coherence is receiving increasing attention due to the interconnectedness, urgency and global character of the challenges that humanity faces today. Policy coherence provides an effective approach to tackle the complex macrochallenges of today since it entails achieving policies from different levels and sectors striving towards the same objectives in a supportive and reinforcing manner, producing an effective and long-lasting response to the challenges. Considering the broad, ambitious and universal Agenda 2030, policy coherence is of greater importance than ever before. This study investigates the policy coherence between Agenda 2030 and the national level looking into the case of Sweden with focus on the environmental dimension of sustainable development by evaluating the coherence between the environmental SDGs and Sweden’s national environmental quality objectives. Coherence between the two policy levels is evaluated using a qualitative data analysis by comparing official policy documents from respective policy agenda and applying the OECD’s (2016) Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development framework to Sweden. The conclusion indicates that the policy agendas fit together in a reasonable way but has the potential to be more coherent. Urgency is seldom addressed, but rather challenges are pointed out as critical and taking action is noted as significant. Both of the policy agendas address the interconnectedness of the challenges, the SDGs in a vague manner pointing out ‘links’ and the national environmental quality objectives in a more detailed manner pointing out more specific examples. The global character of the challenges is addressed in both of the policy agendas, more so in the SDGs than the national environmental quality targets. Incoherence is at times difficult to point out due to the vague terms used in Agenda 2030 compared to Sweden’s national policy. However, the vagueness of Agenda 2030 seems to serve a function whereas the country specific goals go into further detail according to the context. Despite the difficulty, results show that a broader perspective would benefit both policy agendas in addressing the global challenges coherently, since it consequently implies that the concept of policy coherence is applied at a larger scale.

Glaciers are important components of the Earth's environment and are mainly found in polar and high elevation areas. They are crucial for understanding the past, ongoing and upcoming environmental changes, relevant for fresh water supply, logistical and recreational purposes. Subsurface temperature of glaciers is an important parameter heavily influencing the fluxes of mass and energy. The project focuses on how the temperature changes inside glaciers and which factors contribute to the change. Thermal conduction is one of the key processes controlling the thermodynamics of glaciers. This defines how well heat is transferred inside glaciers and how well the temperature propagates. The process of heat conduction at Lomonosovfonna ice field, Svalbard, is described using numerical simulations constrained by measured initial and boundary conditions. Simulated subsurface temperature is in line with measurements before the onset of melt in summer. After that deviations increase as the used model does not consider the process of melt water refreezing. This makes the simulation only partially successful. / Glaciärer är viktiga komponenter i jordens omgivning och återfinns främst i polarområden och områden på hög höjd. De är viktiga för att förstå tidigare, pågående och kommande miljöförändringar, relevanta för färskvattenförsörjning, logistiska och återskapande ändamål. Temperaturen inom glaciärer är en viktig parameter som påverkar flödena av massa och energi. Projektet fokuserar på hur temperaturen förändras inom glaciärer och vilka faktorer som bidrar till förändringen. Värmeledning är en av nyckelprocesserna som kontrollerar termodynamiken hos glaciärer. Detta definierar hur väl värme förflyttas inom glaciärer och hur väl temperaturen sprider sig. Värmeledningsprocessen på isfältet Lomonosovfonna, Svalbard, beskrivs med hjälp av numeriska simuleringar begränsade av uppmätta initial- och gränsförhållanden. Simulering av temperaturen under ytan stämmer överens med mätningarna före smältningen på sommaren. Därefter ökar avvikelsen, eftersom modellen som använts inte tar hänsyn till processen av återfrysning av smältvatten. Detta gör att simuleringen endast är delvist lyckad.

Biomimicry Toolbox, a strategic tool for generating sustainable solutions?

The goal of this thesis is to understand how the Biomimicry Toolbox (BT), a practical tool for applying biomimicry, currently supports strategic thinking in order to create sustainable solutions. A pragmatic qualitative research approach was used, in which the BT was analysed through the lens of the Five Level Framework (5LF), a tool for planning and analysing in complex systems and the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, the application of the 5LF for sustainability endeavours. Interviews were conducted with people experienced with the BT. Results show that the BT has several aspects of strategic thinking. It supports the application of a systems perspective, provides a success goal to move towards and offers tools for a strategic process to follow. The authors conclude that the BT could benefit from including understanding of the patterns and structures of the social system in relation with the earth system. Also, it can benefit from including a section on upstream thinking helping users of the BT consider root causes. Lastly, it could benefit from a strategic approach for evaluating how sustainable solutions are and include a simple and clear prioritisation process. The improvements can make the BT more impactful in supporting societies transition towards sustainability.

Ecodesign strategies in Small- and Medium Sized Companies

The objective of this study is to find out how and why Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SME’s) practice ecodesign. This problem is investigated by conducting seven qualitative interviews with spokesmen from ecodesigning SME’s in The Netherlands. The motivations for the researched SME’s to practice ecodesign are that there are new business opportunities, that it improves the corporate image, that they have a desire to change production to benefit the environment, and out of (expected) governmental legislation. In this thesis it was found that the researched SME’s get their knowledge to ensure that their products are sustainable firstly from their employees. They also apply the method of trial and error, they consult scientific publications, suppliers, and on sustainability events. The Life Cycle Assessment was the only scientific method or tool that was used by the businesses of the respondents. The benefits of practicing ecodesign for the SME’s are that the demand for ecodesigned products is growing, that it improves the corporate image of the company, that it improves business to business relations, that it increases the loyalty of employees to their businesses through working on values that are important to them, and that it provides a new base for innovative ideas. Obstacles to practicing ecodesign seem to be that trade-offs have to be made and that consumers perceive that the ecodesigned products are overpriced.
