Signs of Popular Ecology in the Ecotourism Landscape Near Tikal National Park, GuatemalaLupro, Michael Mooradian 01 May 2000 (has links)
Ecotourism is a common conservation and development strategy in the Maya, Forest region. New sites of ecotourism consumption, such as El Rematé near Tikal National Park in Guatemala, are developing in response to consumer demand for budget accommodations in this attractive cultural and natural setting. This study analyzes new ecotourism infrastructure developments in El Rematé for signs that this tourism draws on ecological imagery as expressed in popular media - or popular ecology - not on the natural and cultural ecology of the region that is the target of international conservation efforts. Analysis suggests that ecotourism entrepreneurs who effectively associate their product with texts of popular ecology will out-compete the community ecotourism projects supported by the non-governmental organizations managing the Biosphere Reserves in the region, challenging the success of international conservation and development strategies.

Have we arrived yet? : Ecotourism operators managing dilemmas in SwedenAxheim, Kristina, Ng, Jessie Kit Wah January 2009 (has links)

The concern for the environment and social aspects have been highlighting in the concept of ecotourism. Tourism is a growing industry, where ecotourism is one of the fastest growing components in tourism today. The increase of amount of travels and tourists in the world, has led to the acknowledgement of tourism as part of the emissions of greenhouse gases. Therefore, the framework of sustainable development in tourism has been developed as well as ecotourism.

This thesis is aiming to study the ecotourism operators’ management of facing dilemmas in the ecotourism industry in Sweden. Therefore, the study is contributing to new knowledge in the lack of research in the field. We have identified the knowledge gap which is from the frontline practitioner’s, ecotourism operator point of view on how to manage dilemmas in this strong sustainable industry, ecotourism.

We structure a literature review where we provide with broader definitions of the major concepts: tourism, sustainable development and ecotourism. Ecotourism is considered as possessing strong sustainability features. The literature review is focused mainly in Swedish context and literature supporting the business purpose of a small firm has been highlighted. The theoretical framework is also presenting research done about the different aspects of sustainable development (economic, social and environment) with the context in ecotourism, which is also presenting the dilemmas that can occur among the perspectives. Community based tourism in Kimmirut, Baffin Island, Nunavut : regional versus local attitudesWoodley, S. B. (Susan B.) January 1999 (has links)
Nunavut has experienced significant growth in tourism since the 1980s, and ecotourism has all but become policy in the region. With the recent thrust in tourism literature suggesting that tourism research furthers the industry's development in communities, it is timely that more studies examine the tourism industry in the changing face of 'Nunavut'. This thesis is a case study presentation of a Nunavut community's experience with tourism. The research examines the changes and restructuring that have come about in the tourism industry since the signing of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, and whether community-controlled tourism is facilitated by these changes. / The results of this research indicate that the basic needs of Kimmirut residents are not being met by current tourism policy. The community's entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to host tourists are not being fully recognized by industry and government, although the desire on behalf of the latter exists.

ECOTOURISM ASSESSMENT: APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES OF ECOTOURISM TO PADDLE-BASED RECREATION IN ST. LAWRENCE ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK AND ENVIRONSMCLAUGHLIN, JULIENE MELISSA 02 November 2011 (has links)
This study explores the concept of ecotourism in terms of Honey’s (2008) seven
principles of ecotourism (involves travel to natural destinations, minimizes impacts, builds
environmental awareness, provides direct financial benefits to conservation, provides financial
benefits and empowerment for local people, respects local culture, and supports human rights
and democratic movements) and their application to the paddling industry of St. Lawrence
Islands National Park (SLINP) and environs. SLINP and environs is located within the Thousand
Islands Region of Eastern Ontario, and for the purpose of this research, includes all of the land
and waterways along the St. Lawrence River extending as far as Jones Creek in the northeast to,
but not including, Howe Island just southwest of Gananoque. The market and demand for
paddle-based recreation in SLINP and environs is examined to determine if ecotourism is a
feasible alternative to conventional tourism. Subsequently, Honey’s (2008) principles of
ecotourism are applied to explore the role of paddle-based recreation within an ecotourism
framework of the defined region. Specific recommendations were developed to better comply
with these principles. General recommendations concerning the universal applicability of the
principles were also prepared and included considerations for quality control measures and
established tourism destinations. Ecotourism has traditionally been viewed as a panacea concept
for developing countries to stimulate the economy, as well as, directly provide support for
conservation efforts. This research instead examines the concept of ecotourism for a relatively
sustainable, single activity within an established tourism destination of a developed country. If
the recommendations are correctly implemented, the long term implications could include a
reshaping of, first, the regional tourism industry and then, potentially the tourism industry at
large, by encouraging a more holistic approach to tourism. / Thesis (Master, Environmental Studies) -- Queen's University, 2011-10-19 18:23:57.163

Išvadose apibendrinami pagrindiniai teoriniai aspektai ir tyrimo rezultatai. Kauno apskrities kaimo turizmo sodybų savininkai pripažįsta, kad ekoturizmas padeda saugoti gamtinius resursus, skatina tolimesnę aplinkos apsaugos plėtrą, suteikia puikų žmogaus ir gamtos sąveikos ryšį ir didina pagarbą gamtai. Kaimo turizmo sodybos priimdamos poilsiautojus atsižvelgia į ekologines problemas, tačiau didesnį dėmesį skiria poilsiautojų norų ir poreikių tenkinimui, o ne aplinkos saugojimui. Nors ekonominiai faktoriai išskirti kaip svarbesni, tačiau kaimo turizmo sodybos stengiasi tausoti ir aplinką. Ekotuzimo paslaugų pasiūla Kauno apskrities kaimo turizmo sektoriuje kolkas yra labai...
