The effects of teaching strategy and cognitive style on student interpretations of editorial cartoons

Hunter, John Mark 19 October 2005 (has links)
Many people assume that editorial cartoons are easily understood by the bulk of the population. For this reason, editorial cartoons are often used as teaching materials in the classroom. Recent research, however, raises doubts as to the effectiveness of this practice. Investigations by Bedient (1971) and DeSousa & Medhurst (1982) determined that the majority of students (grade 5 through college) could not interpret editorial cartoons. These investigators went on to suggest that a logical next step would be to determine if editorial cartoon literacy can be taught. The cognitive style of the participants was examined to determine if the different teaching strategies were differentially effective vis-a-vis field dependence and field independence. Two presentations (treatments) were designed to model methods of reading editorial cartoons. The Whole Cartoon Analysis presented 25 editorial cartoons along with a 100-200 word interpretation of each cartoon. The Parse Analysis Treatment was accomplished in three steps rather than the one for the Whole method. In step one, the whole cartoon is presented with a short gloss of the meaning. In step two all of the cartoon is visually suppressed except for one visual meaning element. This element of the cartoon is discussed and then the next element of the cartoon is added, and so on until the entire cartoon is back on the screen at which point the overall meaning is discussed. The dependent variable of the investigation was the two-part Editorial Cartoon Interpretation Task. Part A asked each participant to enumerate the symbols in the cartoon and define them as to meaning. Part B asked the participant to write a short thematic interpretation of the cartoon. A two-way Analysis of Variance on the data revealed no significant differences in either the main effects or the interaction. / Ed. D.

Montezuma Jaramillo, María José 16 April 2018 (has links)
Tesis

Evaluating On-Premise Language Models for Editorial Tasks

Valo, Anton, Andersson, Villiam January 2024 (has links)
The use of cloud-based language models is becoming increasingly common as they become more accessible, and their capabilities to process and generate text are continually improving. However, a challenge arises for users and organizations handling sensitive data because all processed data is transmitted to the server operator. As a result, there’s a growing need for so-called On-Premise models, which can be operated locally on the servers of a user or organization. This project aims to identify, test, and compare several on-premise language models, "Focusing on tasks such as detecting errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as well as analyzing language usage. The project involved searching for models that support both Swedish and English on the website Huggingface.co and implementing them on various AWS EC2 instances. After an initial assessment, two particularly promising models, Viking and GPT-SW3, were identified as capable enough for more detailed testing. The selected models underwent an extensive prompt-engineering process to optimize their performance and maximize their ability to demonstrate their capabilities. Following this, standardized tests for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and translation were developed. Additionally, more advanced tests were designed, including restructuring, simplifying, and adapting texts to specific personas. The results from the tests showed that both tested models had high proficiency in correcting errors regarding spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and in translating texts between Swedish and English. GPT-SW3 had high proficiency in rewriting texts to use other styles, such as using formal or simplistic language, while the Viking model had no proficiency in achieving these types of tasks. Concurrently with the model testing, a script was developed to analyze the performance and costs of the hardware during the model executions. This script was implemented on several AWS EC2 instances, each equipped with different hardware types. The performance of these instances was compared, and the results showed that running the models on the Inferentia2 chip offered the best performance and the lowest cost per generated word, despite having the highest hourly rental cost. All CPU instances tested performed significantly worse than the GPU instance but were a lot cheaper to rent per hour. This could be advantageous for on-demand applications where cost efficiency is a priority.

Dallas Morning News Editorial Cartoonists: Influences of John Knott on Jack "Herc" Ficklen and William McClanahan

Darden, Robert F. 08 1900 (has links)
This problem's investigation deals with gauging the artistic influence, if any, pioneer editorial cartoonist John Knott had on his successors, Ficklen and McClanahan. Information was gathered through interviews and the pages of the Dallas Morning News. Organization is as follows: introduction, biography and art of Knott, biography and art of Ficklen, biography and art of McClanahan, summary and conclusion. The study found minimal artistic influence by Knott on the cartoons of Ficklen and McClanahan. Compared to Knott, Ficklen and McClanahan had different art backgrounds, cartoon styles, personal and political beliefs. Knott's successors admired different artists, drew during a different editorial page emphasis and had more freedom in cartoon selection than Knott did. Neither Ficklen nor McClanahan listed Knott as an artistic influence.

Os recursos persuasivos no editorial de jornal sob a perspectiva da lingüística sistêmico-funcional / The persuasive resources in the newspaper editorial under the perspective of systemic functional linguistics

Oda, Ivone Hiromi 23 June 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ivone Hiromi Oda.pdf: 566253 bytes, checksum: 264fe70c61b800e4a6a973d84c551540 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-06-23 / The present study is a social semiotic account of a newspaper editorial, which draws on both Halliday s (1985, 1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics and Fairclough s Critical Discourse Analysis. Of particular interest is the persuasion explicit or implicit present in an editorial from the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. The aim of a critical linguistic analysis of a text is to unfold the meanings hidden in its lexical, semantic, syntactic structures as they gradually mediate the general meaning, and to observe how these meanings help to build its ideological content. As Fairclough (1989: 1) states, consciousness is the first step towards emancipation ; he also notes how differences in style or textual strategies in these texts suggest a voice , characteristic of the newspaper in which they are published. What distinguishes the editorial is not the values-and-beliefs offered, but the use of textual strategies that accentuates the act of speech of values-and-beliefs offered, he adds. There are always different ways to say the same thing, and these ways are not accidental alternatives: differences in expression bring ideological distinctions and so bring differences in representation. Thus, I examine an editorial taking into account the pragmatic dimension of this genre, which involves the notion of frame, as a framework that contains the question of intertext in itself, and therefore the notions of reported speech; of crypt-argumentation or secret argumentation; and of footing. The latter heralds the author´s position through the concept of appraisal, which involves the notion of tokens of attitude. The analysis, having these theoretical supports as background, will apply the proposal of fallacies and enthymemes in argumentation, by Lauerbach (2007) and by Toulmin (1958) respectively. And, based on evaluative dimensions by Lemke (1998), I will check (a) the linguistic nature of evaluation within such text; (b) the lexico-grammatical items that express this evaluation; and (c) how (a) and (b) concur for construing the editorial argumentations and, in last instance, for building discourse persuasion within this text / O presente estudo, de caráter semiótico-social, na esteira da Lingüística Sistêmico- Funcional de Halliday (1985, 1994) e seus colaboradores, enfoca o gênero editorial jornalístico no jornal Folha de S.Paulo, do ponto de vista da análise crítica do discurso, examinando a persuasão explícita e implícita presentes na interação através da escrita.

A linguística crítica, leitura e mudança social: um enfoque sistêmico-funcional / The critical linguistics, reading and social change: a systemic-functional focus

Oliveira, Moises Gonçalves de 17 August 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T18:24:11Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Moises Goncalves de Oliveira.pdf: 201274 bytes, checksum: 2101dff89a26e7f6899c2157f99192df (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-08-17 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / In recent years in Brazil, there has been growing interest in questions related to reading, literacy and all the social changes resulting from these practices in the field of critical linguistics. There is, however, still a huge field to be exploited in this area. Reading and writing are the basis for making a critical reading of the world, and the process of the awareness of citizen s rights and duties starts from reading and writing. According to Fowler (1991), all aspects of linguistic structure (lexical decisions, syntactic choices, etc) contain ideological meaning. All institutions are socially, economically and politically located, and anything that is either said or written about the world is made from a particular ideological position. The present study makes a critical textual analysis of a newspaper editorial from the Folha de São Paulo, Endless Outrages , published on September 19th, 2006, using Halliday s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and the following resources and discursive strategies: (a) the concepts of phallacy and enthymeme presented by Lauerbach (2007); (b) information smuggling' proposed by Luchjenbroers & Aldridge, (2007); (c) frames according to Bednarek (2005); (d) crypto-argumentation by Kitis, E. & Milapides, M. (1996), (e) the dog-whistle strategy, Coffin & O Halloran (2006) and (f) reported discourse (LAUERBACH, 2006). The findings suggest that the text, using such resources and strategies, aims at convincing the reader, in an implied way, to accept the fact that the President was to blame for the events described, without, however, impairing the newspaper s impartiality / Nos últimos anos, no Brasil, tem havido uma preocupação singular com as questões de leitura, letramento e a mudança social advinda dessas práticas dentro do campo da linguística crítica.
