A study of the teachers perception of the quality of online education programs in selected community colleges and universities in Mississippi

Sanders, Blanche 02 May 2009 (has links)
This study examined the perception of teachers among Mississippi Community Colleges and Universities concerning online courses and distance learning. With the enormous expansion in the amount of technical information that has become available during the past few decades, the challenge of retrieving required data has assumed gigantic proportions. In today’s society there is a rapid growth of technology. A quantitative survey was conducted to identify the teachers’ perception of online education. Two community colleges and two universities were selected to participate in this study. These institutions are geographically located in a widespread chain. The questionnaire consisted of 36 items that addressed the demographics and the instructors’ perception of the quality of online education. Specifically, data was collected to assess the adequacy of the instructional, technical, and administrative support for teaching online courses, the problems encountered, and whether WebCT and Blackboard adequately serve the instructional needs of students and instructors.

Factors that Impact Successful Student Achievement in Post-Secondary Online Courses

Esters, Meranda Lychelle 11 December 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant differences in students based of education demographics and what factors contributed to the successful completion of online courses for postsecondary education students. Specifically, this study sought to determine if there was a significant difference between certain educational demographics (gender, race, classification, course, and professor) and grade; a significant relationship between specific online course features (availability of chat, videos, discussion boards, and video conferences) and grade; a significant relationship between certain student behaviors (location of access, time to complete assignments, interaction with content, frequency of access, interaction with instructor, and interaction with students) and grade; and students’ perception and grades. A Kruskal-Wallis analysis was conducted to analyze differences within and between groups by educational demographics. Spearman Rho’s Correlations were computed to examine if a significant relationship existed between the aforementioned independent variables and the dependent variable of students’ grades. After the data were collected and analyzed, the findings showed that there were no statistically significant differences among students who completed online courses. There was no statistically significant relationships between the independent variables and students’ grades.

Soundings: Musical Aesthetics in Music Education Discourse from 1907 to 1958

Kopkas, Jeremy M 11 August 2011 (has links)
In this dissertation I examine the discourse of music educators as it relates to musical aesthetics in the United States from the creation of the Music Supervisors’ Conference in 1907 to the year of the publication of Basic Concepts of Music Education: The Fifty-Seventh Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, Part 1 in 1958. The purpose of this dissertation is to show that philosophical discussion, especially in relation to musical aesthetics, was much more comprehensive than previously acknowledged. The conventional view that the arguments supporting music education were primarily utilitarian is a limited interpretation of the discourse prior to 1958. In actuality, arguments about music extended beyond its practical social, economic, and political utility. Additional aesthetic theories guided the field and girded ideas of musical understanding and informed instruction. A better understanding of the discourse of this period contributes to more informed conversations about musical aesthetics and its relation to music education. Utilizing philosophical analysis and archival research, I argue in this dissertation that the philosophical discourse relating to musical aesthetics was rich, varied, insightful, and pervasive. The evidence in this dissertation refutes the standard interpretation which eschews the possibility of discourse on aesthetics taking place prior to 1958. I show that there was deeper philosophical analysis than what is currently acknowledged by those who presently make the claim that what was intended to happen generally in the field of music education and during instruction was solely guided by utilitarian philosophy. In other words, it expands the current understanding of philosophical discourse relating to musical aesthetics in music education before the Music Education as Aesthetic Education movement that is argued to begin with the publication of Basic Concepts.

Životní situace v literatuře. Pracovní listy pro devátý ročník základních škol / Life situations in literature. Worksheets for ninth grade of secondary schools

Kočová, Veronika January 2014 (has links)
The possible approach towards the teaching of literature at the 9th grade level of primary education is the central topic of this thesis. The main idea is to base literature teaching on a system of working sheets, which relate to extracts from 4 selected books. These books have a common theme; real-life situations relevant to students of the 9th grade. Such theme has been preselected on the author's perception that students are becoming less in contact with the literary world, thus seeking a path to bring students closer to it. The goal is to show pupils the relevance and practical use of literature, with the use of diverse tasks and assignments and to convince them that reading may be entertaining as well as educating. A specific characteristic of the thesis is the fact that the research has been carried out in a given classroom at one of Prague's primary schools, where the author teaches Czech Language and Literature. Therefore, a key element of the thesis is the discussion of first hand findings and lessons-learned during these lessons. On the basis of the working sheet system trial results in class, this method proves to be efficient. Students reacted positively to the learning system and the text excerpts allowed them to complete literary tasks and also to discuss the described real-life situations...

Role neslyšícího asistenta a neslyšícího pedagoga na základní škole pro žáky se sluchovým postižením v hodinách českého jazyka / Role of a Deaf Assistant and a Deaf Teacher in Primary Schools for Pupils with Hearing Impairment in Czech Language Lessons

Przeczková, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
The thesis deals with the roles of the deaf assistant and deaf teacher in a primary school for pupils with hearing impairment in the Czech language lessons. It can be notionally divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to the theoretical education of the deaf, mainly to presentation of bilingual education and its application in contemporary education in our country and abroad. Thesis discusses the Czech sign language and the differences between it and the Czech language in the context of teaching Czech as a second language for the deaf. Adequate space is devoted to deaf assistant and deaf teacher and their work in the classroom in cooperation with hearing teacher. The second notional part contains analyzed data and results interpretation of the research, which was carried out through questionnaires and participant observation in classrooms. The outputs of the research showed that from view of respondents is presence of deaf teaching staff important for many different reasons. Involvement of deaf teacher in the learning process emerged almost equal as the participation of a hearing teacher. Participation of deaf assistant depends more on the individual agreement with the hearing teacher. The pairs had divided competencies in different ways.

L'égalité des chances au prisme des établissements scolaires : analyse des arrangements de la politique de subvention préférentielle dans sept établissements scolaires privés subventionnés du Chili / Equality of opportunity through the prism of schools : analysis of the policy arrangement of the preferential subsidy policy in seven subsidized private schools in Chile

Pino Muttoni, Natalia 25 September 2017 (has links)
The preferential subsidy policy, as of 2008, was expected to contribute to equal opportunities for "priority students". however, these political principles have encountered several obstacles of the ideological, pragmatic and structural order. the continuity of the selective practices in the particular subsidized sector was explained by the little coercive effect of the law or of the logics in this educational sector. but behind this really happening statement? in a world with multiple references to what logics respond establishments? unlike normative works that have already studied this subject, our thesis proposes to interrogate the reality of certain establishments, exploring how politics has been translated, adapted and installed in the speeches and in the practices of the actors. this approach invites us to reconsider the voluntariness implied by research on education policy, which has little conceptualized the bargaining power of the school in the face of public action. A descriptive analysis of the seven subsidized private schools was carried out in terms of their identities. taking into account their logic of action, we have reconstructed the process of appropriation of sep policy that will be described according to two regimes of action. according to a "regime of justice" (or justification), agreements and disagreements built locally around the "take off priority" are discussed, which in some cases show the tension between the organization's identity and the logic of politics, showing a liberal conception of the common good. according to a "regime of fairness" (or routine) the translations of the policy are described in concrete terms, through the description of actions, which also seem to be less focused on "priority" students than on the establishment unit . these two dimensions show the process of change of a fragmented school system that is implementing a national reform of social inclusion.

Learning to Teach in an Intensive Introductory TESL Training Course: A Case Study of English Teacher Learning

Freitas, Danielle Coelho Michel 18 March 2013 (has links)
Despite a growing body of research on trainee teachers’ learning during pre-service programs, intensive introductory TESL training courses are still designed to instruct a “standard” type of trainee teacher. This research study investigates the factors that mediate trainee teachers’ learning process as well as the interaction between these factors, which either facilitate and/or hinder trainee teachers’ success during an intensive introductory TESL training course. Using a qualitative holistic single-case study, informed by an interpretivist perspective, this study explores how three trainee teachers learned how to teach during a course in Southern Ontario, Canada. An integrated conceptual framework, formed by a sociocultural perspective of teacher learning, a holistic view of curriculum, and transformative pedagogy was employed and the findings include four major factors that mediated trainee teachers’ teacher learning process and three types of interaction that facilitated and/or hindered their success during the program.
