Dyslexia : an investigation of teacher awareness in mainstream high schoolsThompson, Lynette Sharon 04 1900 (has links)
The main aim of this study was to assess teachers’ awareness levels of dyslexia, their perceptions of their ability to identify and manage dyslexia, and their perceptions of the adequacy of their pre-service and in-service training in dyslexia. The sample comprised teachers at 16 mainstream high schools in the Western Cape. A Likert type scale questionnaire was used to collect data that were analysed by means of a sign test of difference and a Kruskal-Wallis test of variance. The results indicated that teachers had adequate knowledge of dyslexia, believed they are able to identify and manage dyslexia, and believed that they received little or no pre-service and in-service training in dyslexia. The main conclusion that can be drawn is that teachers need on-going adequate pre-service and in-service training in the field of dyslexia. / Department of Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

The employment patterns of BPsych graduates in the Western CapeKotze, Lynn Meagan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / In order to make mental health care more accessible and even out the skewed distribution of services, policies were put in place to integrate mental health services into primary health care. For this to be effective, more trained mental health personnel needed to be employed in the public sphere as well as non-governmental and community organizations; and in state services. The BPsych degree which was instituted to meet this need has however, been plagued with controversy since its inception. This study aims to determine the employment patterns of BPsych graduates in the Western Cape so as to ascertain whether the expressed goals for establishing the degree, that is, addressing the need for primary mental health care workers, is in fact being met. Combinations of quantitative and qualitative methods were employed in this study. A self-constructed questionnaire was used for obtaining data. Quantitative data was analysed using SPSS and qualitative data was analysed by means of thematic content analysis. The quantitative data suggest that most of the respondents are employed and have completed the board exam. The majority of respondents are female and are employed within either community or NGO settings, or the private sector. Just over one third of respondents are employed as counsellors. A qualitative analysis of the data has suggested that the majority of employers are unaware of the category of registered counsellor. Respondents placed a large emphasis on the value of the practical component of the course. Based on the results obtained, one could argue that access to mental health care has not been significantly improved by the implementation of this category of registration.

Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In light of recent South African literature that shows that most adolescents from previously
disadvantaged communities have until recently not had access to career guidance interventions, it
was decided to do an investigation into the career interests of a group of learners from such a
community. It was decided to specifically focus on sex role stereotyping and parental role
models, with the purpose of gaining relevant information that can be used in the planning of
career guidance curricula. Socio-economic and cultural variables were also considered.
The investigation was done with the coloured communities of the Cape West Coast area.
Learners from grade nine of 11 senior secondary schools were visited and requested to rank the
ten interest fields of the MB 10 interest questionnaire from 1 to lOon grounds of preference.
Statistical calculations were used to compare the boys' and girls' fields of interest. The learners
were also requested to make a provisional career choice. This information was then compared to
their parents' careers in order to ascertain what role parental role models have in their
conditional career choices.
From the investigation the following become evident:
• There is a statistical relevant difference (p<O.O1) between the sexes' interest on al ten MB
10 fields of interests together.
• There is a statistical relevant difference (p<O.OI) between the sexes' interest in the
following fields: People as individualsIin small groups (In), People in groups or public
appearance (Gr), Linguistic (L), Artistic (A), Practical (P) and Animals, biological
sciences (Z).
• Parental role models do not seem to have a powerful influence on the participants'
declared career choices.
• Socio-economic and cultural influences seem to playa role in the participants' declared
career choices.
An attempt was made to contribute to the process of career development of adolescents through
making recommendations regarding the development of career guidance curricula.
so 'n groep leerders.
hul verklaarde beroepskeuses speel.
velde: Mense as individue/in klein groepies (In), Mense in groepe of openbare optrede
(Gr), Linguïsties (L), Artisties (A), Prakties (pr) en Diere, biologiese wetenskappe (Z).

Academic factors affecting learning at a nursing college in the Western CapeMagerman, Yolande Nerissa 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCur)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Nursing education, including the individual nurse educator, has a responsibility to
society and to students for providing quality education, for maintaining the highest
academic standards, for the proficient use of teaching strategies and for ensuring
adequate support to learners. These standards were threatened at a particular college
in the Western Cape which instigated this study.
This study aimed at investigating the academic factors that influenced learning at a
particular nursing college in the Western Cape. The objectives included the following
possible factors that may have contributed towards the unsatisfactory, academic
performances of students:
• Nursing as a career choice;
• Selection criteria;
• Approaches to learning;
• Motivation and learning;
• Language barrier to learning; and
• Factors affecting the learning environment.
A non-experimental, descriptive research design was applied with a quantitative
approach. The target population (N = 963) consisted of nursing students following the
course leading to registration as a professional nurse, according to the South African
Nursing Council’s regulation 425, as promulgated by the Nursing Act 50 of 1978, as
amended (Nursing Act 33 of 2005). Probability, stratified sampling was used to select
the sample of participants (n = 174).
A structured questionnaire, consisting of predominantly closed questions, was used for
the collection of data.
Ethical approval was obtained from Stellenbosch University to conduct this study.
Permission to conduct the research was also obtained beforehand from the
management of the nursing college being studied, whilst prior informed consent was
obtained from each participant. Reliability and validity of the study were assured by means of a pilot study and through
the use of experts in nursing research, methodology and statistics. Data was collected
and captured by the researcher personally.
The data was analysed with the support of a statistician and was expressed as
frequencies and in tables and histograms. Descriptive statistics and post-hoc analyses,
including tests for statistical associations, were performed.
The outcomes from this study showed that third year students (n = 49/23%) spent the
most time studying, whilst first years (n = 74/43%) and second years (n = 40/23%) only
spent 2.3 hours studying per day. Academic support classes, when offered, were
always attended by (n = 64/37%) and most times by (n = 72/42%). The majority of the
participants were able to cope with the workload most of the time (n = 107/61%), whilst
(n = 51/30%) and (n = 6/3%) of the participants indicated coping seldom and never,
respectively. A significant relationship between the ages of participants and being able
to cope with the workload (Spearman p-value = 0.02) existed. Results indicated that (n
= 83/48%) of the participants received support with language problems, whilst (n =
75/43%) indicated that they did not receive support with language problems. The
Afrikaans speaking participants coped the best with the workload (mean score = 1.72),
followed by the English speaking students (mean score = 1.68), and lastly the Isi-
Xhosa speaking learners (mean score = 1.65).
Recommendations made by participants included the following:
• Strict adherence to the selection criteria, which should help decrease the
attrition rate.
• English as a subject / module during the first year was proposed.
• The promotion of the proficiency in English, through interaction between English
speaking learners and students with English as second language, should be
encouraged.
• Regular updates of the contents of the curriculum.
• The importance of identifying ‘at risk’ students and pro-actively introducing a
mentorship programme.
• Information technology needed to be improved in many aspects, such as
accessibility of Web based communication. Results from the open ended questions showed that participants regarded the teaching
strategies as boring. Large classrooms were also mentioned as a problem. Smaller
classes were requested to enable more interaction in the class.
In conclusion, this study showed that specific academic factors were influencing
learning at the nursing college being investigated in the Western Cape. Therefore,
recommendations were made in this study, which, if implemented, should result in an
improvement in the overall academic performances of students.
ingesluit:
• Verpleging as 'n loopbaankeuse;
• Keuringskriteria;
• Benaderings tot leer;
• Motivering en leer;
• Engels as 'n vak / module gedurende die eerste jaar is voorgestel.
word.
Groot klaskamers is ook as 'n probleem geïdentifiseer. Daar was
Dus is aanbevelings in

Attitudes and perceptions of first year students towards interprofessional education in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences at the University of the Western CapeFilies, Gerard C. 12 1900 (has links)
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The setting for this study was the University of the Western Cape, Faculty of
Community and Health Sciences, first year undergraduate students. All students who
participated in the compulsory interprofessional programme were from the following
disciplines: Occupational Therapy; Physiotherapy; Psychology; Social Work; Natural
Medicine; Dietetics; Human Ecology; Sports Sciences and Nursing.
The objectives of this study were to measure the attitudes and perceptions of first
year students who participated in an undergraduate interprofessional programme.
The attitudes and perceptions were further measured in relation to the specific
lecturers involved, the age of the students, their gender, race, background as well
their specific discipline.
This was primarily a quantitative study incorporating two qualitative questions in
which 657 students were issued with a questionnaire designed to determine their
attitudes and perceptions towards interprofessional education. A sample size of 264
students resulted in 95% confidence intervals with a maximum precision of 5%. The
questionnaire was adapted, with permission, from Cameron; Rennie; DiProspero;
Langlois & Wagner (2009). MS Excel was used to capture the data and STATISTICA
version 9 (StatSoft Inc. (2009) STATISTICA (data analysis software system),
www.statsoft.com.) was used to analyze the data from the questionnaires.
Descriptive statistics was used to describe the main features of the sample of this
study and summary statistics was further used to summarize the findings of this
study in order to communicate the bulk of the information as simple as possible.
Two open-ended questions were included at the end of the questionnaire and this
was used to triangulate the data.
The Kruskal-Wallace test was used to measure the results, whereby a p-value of
<0.05 indicated statistical significance. Of all the factors used to measure the
attitudes and perceptions of students, the following three were significant: Gender;
Race and Discipline. No other factors impact on the attitudes and perceptions of
students towards interprofessional education. Student attitudes and perceptions towards interprofessional education were found to
be very positive. The findings revealed that the most significant factor in the study
was the lack of understanding of various disciplines participating in the programme
and their understanding of the relevance of the teaching approach (interprofessional)
as well as their specific role in the health care team. This clearly illustrated the need
to recommend to the co-ordinating unit of the programme that this be defined more
clearly for the students and specifically the Sports Sciences students.

Investigating the experiences of women principals in high schools in the Western CapeBosch, Mare 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research focused on the experiences of female principals of co-ed high schools in the Western Cape. It investigated the path that their careers followed from the decision to become a teacher to ultimately being appointed as a principal and then having to lead the school. It further investigated the personal, organisational and social factors that were influential along the way. In addition, it probed the motivation and drive behind their career choice as well as the barriers and challenges encountered along the way.
The researcher interviewed nine female principals. They were asked to tell their life story, with emphasis on their career route thus far. Key questions were asked, focusing on the motivation behind their career choice, whether they had been actively prepared for promotion and how their appointment was received.
The interviews were transcribed in order to prepare them for data analysis. Any content that recorded experiences that contributed to their growth and development in teaching was coded accordingly. This produced a spectrum of codes. The codes were then placed into a diagram and grouped together, based on their meaning and implications. Identified groups included education and training, self-belief, work-life balance, mentorship, support and the stereotyping of women. The interconnectedness of the group was considered, together with their collective impact on the individual principals’ career route.
The research findings indicated that the career route of the principals was determined by various factors on a personal level as well as on organisational and social levels. On a personal level, qualifications obtained and the influence of parents, family and own teachers played a role. This was critical in preparing the individual for the career path that was to follow. On an organisational level, opportunities taken, work ethic, mentorship and gender barriers were factors encountered. On a social level, the stereotyping of women and the changing family structure were factors that had to be contended with. Once appointed, it was found that the support from family, colleagues and learners contributed to their success.
It emerged that the potential of these women had been identified early on in their careers and that they gained confidence when they were granted opportunities to learn and grow. To become a principal was in most cases never their intention but something that developed as they went about doing their work with commitment and diligence. Throughout, it remained a priority for them to invest in the lives of learners and the greatest joy was derived from seeing learners develop into young adults who were contributing to society.

Exploring the development of a mentorship programme for teachers through a reflexive democratic practiceScholtz, Zena 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEd (Education Policy Studies))--University of Stellenbosc, 2006. / This thesis explores the possibility of developing a mentorship programme for teachers
through a reflexive democratic practice in order to support student teachers at the Cape
Peninsula University of Technology (Bellville Campus), when they do their internship in the
host schools. It argues that critical dialogue and reflection are at the core of practices that are
more democratic and that the development of a mentorship programme within the context of a
community of practice holds transformative possibilities for teaching and learning. Aspects of
current practice at the schools and at the academy, which may enhance or hinder the
development of a reflexive democratic practice, are identified. It is hoped that a critical
analysis and reflection of the research findings will contribute to the improvement of the
practice teaching experience of the student teachers as well as contribute to the development
of an effective mentorship programme.
