New Faculty Mentoring in Respiratory Care Programs

McHenry, Kristen L., Lampley, Jim, Byington, Randy L., Good, Donald W., Tweed, Stephanie R. 01 October 2018 (has links)
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to identify mentoring practices of new faculty members in Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited respiratory care programs in the U.S. and to identify the perceptions of program directors regarding the observed impact of program mentoring practices. Methods: The method for the study was quantitative non-experimental survey research. The survey instrument was an electronic questionnaire titled Respiratory Care Faculty (RCF) Mentoring Survey. The 25-item survey was divided into three dimensions: mentoring practices, mentor/mentee relationship, and perceptions of the impact of new faculty mentoring. Of the 410 possible program director participants, 126 (30%) responded to the survey. Data from the survey were used to analyze three primary research questions on four independent variables (12 total research questions). Results: Testing of the null hypotheses associated with the 12 research questions resulted in three significant findings and 9 findings that were not significant. Significant findings included female program directors reported greater opportunities for mentoring within their programs and greater levels of expectation concerning mentoring as compared to male program directors. Program directors from associate degree programs also reported a higher level of expectation concerning mentoring than program directors in bachelor’s degree programs. There was overwhelming agreement regarding the potential impact and benefit of mentoring new faculty to improve job performance, reduce turnover, improve job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. Conclusion: The results of this study may benefit administrators and educators in respiratory care in efforts to support new faculty who possibly feel underprepared or overwhelmed in the new role. Because other allied health fields of study are similar in nature to respiratory care, the findings of the study could have potential implications across a range of health-related professions.

No. of bitstreams: 1 DISSERTACAO FINAL DEUEL.pdf: 526441 bytes, checksum: 6da5dafb73ab9fbe9bd47c37c1ebab2a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-07-09 / This dissertation is a documentary research diagnosis of character you want to enlarge the perception of the "alleged needs of the market" and teacher training courses in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in both the elementary school and in high school, and has some of the dilemmas related to science and mathematics teachers in the state of Goiás Begins with a discussion that relates education, demand and structure, then do a historical retrospective of the consolidation of Higher Education in Brazil trying to make in parallel, the process of building Law of Guidelines and Bases and the National Plan of Education, within the period f rom 1991 to 2006, which is marked by a major range of LDB/96 approval, which probably inf luenced the expansion of the number of IES in the country, but specif ically in Goiás, where was the focus of this dissertation, we tried to get data cataloged by INEP, IBGE, SEEGo, and others in an attempt to elucidate issues concerning the training of teachers of Science and Mathematics in the State. Finally, f rom the dif ferent elements worked until now, realized the necessity of explanation of some dilemmas that are presented, more clearly, depending on the characteristic look of this dissertation. Such dilemmas are: Rejection, Occupation, Training and Survival. The f irst dilemma is characterized by denial that society has shown how the demand for courses in Science. This refusal may be the original work (dilemma 2) that are available and that, consequently, have undergone a training (dilemma 3) very specif ic. This training has enabled the existence of people, through the survival (dilemma 4) occupation, have been shown in some cases almost exclusively, as a reference positive or negative for society / Esta dissertação resulta de uma pesquisa documental de caráter diagnóstico que pretende ampliar a percepção entre as supostas necessidades de mercado e a formação de professores nos cursos de Biologia, Física, Matemática e Química tanto no ensino fundamental quanto no ensino médio e que apresenta alguns dos dilemas ligados aos professores em Ciências e Matemática no estado de Goiás.

Faculty Willingness to Complete Information Technology Training on Course Management Systems

Pereira, Audrey S. 01 January 2015 (has links)
The literature suggests that information technology (IT), including Course Management Systems (CMSs), allows higher education faculty members (HEFMs) to adopt better methods for teaching and learning, and that training contributes to adoption. However, many HEFMs are unwilling to complete IT training on the CMS, contributing to low adoption rates. Yet, little is known about what influences HEFMs to complete IT training on their institution's CMS, even though CMSs are widely available. The purpose of this study was to address this gap in the literature through a quantitative, cross-sectional study of HEFM perceptions of CMS characteristics, based on Rogers' diffusion of innovations theory, which may affect their willingness to complete IT training on their institution's CMS. The research questions focused on how perceived relative advantage (RA), compatibility (CMP), complexity (CMX), trialability (TR), and observability (OB) of the CMS impacted HEFM willingness to complete IT training on their institution's CMS. Higher education faculty member tenure status, rank, length of CMS use, level of CMS expertise, department, gender, and age were potential mediating variables. Data from 102 Fitchburg State University HEFMs were collected, and multiple regression models developed. Compatibility was significantly associated with willingness to train online, adjusted for department, and RA with willingness to train in-person and combined. This study has a potential positive impact on society through providing information for researchers and higher education administrators who are changing IT training on CMSs in order to improve adoption rates and the quality of teaching and learning at institutions of higher learning.
