The Gap Between Lifetime Fertility Intentions and Completed Fertility in Europe and the United States: A Cohort Approach

Beaujouan, Eva, Berghammer, Caroline 25 February 2019 (has links) (PDF)
We study the aggregate gap between intended and actual fertility in 19 European countries and the US based on a cohort approach. This complements prior research that had mainly used a period approach. We compare the mean intended number of children among young women aged 20 to 24 (born in the early 1970s), meas ured during the 1990s in the Fertility and Family Surveys, with data on completed fertility in the same cohorts around age 40. In a similar manner, we compare the share who state that they do not want a child with actual cohort childlessness. Our exploration is informed by the cognitive-social model of fertility intentions devel- oped by Bachrach and Morgan (Popul Dev Rev 39(3):459-485, 2013). In all coun- tries, women eventually had, on average, fewer children than the earlier expectations in their birth cohort, and more often than intended, they remained childless. The results reveal distinct regional patterns, which are most apparent for childlessness. The gap between intended and actual childlessness is widest in the Southern Euro- pean and the German-speaking countries and smallest in the Central and Eastern European countries. Additionally, we analyze the aggregate intentions-fertility gap among women with different levels of education. The gap is largest among highly educated women in most countries studied and the educational gradient varies by region, most distinctively for childlessness. Differences between countries suggest that contextual factors-norms about parenthood, work-family policies, unemployment-shape women's fertility goals, total family size, and the gap between them.

Determinants of the decision to go to college in Argentina / Determinantes del nivel de asistencia al nivel superior de educación

Ripani, Laura January 1999 (has links) (PDF)
Increasing attention to higher education policies in the knowledge-based society makes important to understand the relationship between socio-economic family characteristics and educational choices. This paper considers the decision to go to college in Argentina as a family's economic decision. The goal is to investigate the impact of family income on the decision to go to a university versus the decision to go to a community college in Argentina. Using a probit model of the decision to go to college, the results of this paper show that the income of the rest of the family has a positive and statistically significant impact on the decision to go to college. A multinomial logit model (where the choices are no college, community college or university) shows that the income of the rest of the family is important in order to determine the probability to go to a community college versus the other two possibilities. Family income also has a positive impact in the decision to go to a university versus the other two choices. This model also shows that parents education is an important factor in explaining the decision to go to a university as well as to go to a community college.

This research aimed to identify, describe and analyze the expectations of family and school in relation to the participation of the family's role in school performance and development of children, as well as lead to reflection school staff (teachers, employees and managers) on current challenges to the expansion of this relationship by means of a product in the form of video documentary "When the family participates," which aims to provide essential information to better use and management of space and time on the approaches and family of democratic relations with school, recognizing the importance of effective practice in this participatory process of education of children of Brazilian public schools. Participated in this research family, teachers and management team of a state public school west of a medium-sized city in the interior of São Paulo. This qualitative research used as instruments for data collection questionnaires goals and semi structured interviews. It was found from the results that there is great appreciation for the families interviewed the education process of their children, because they represent one of the only forms of social mobility and overcome the very conditions of life, although the forms of participation and mobilization for access and children stay in school are not always those to which teachers value and expect families. Through the data collected, also noted the difficulty of school management act in a democratic way, bringing families the responsibility for the administration and school decisions. This indicates that there is a need for training of the whole school community of diverse forms of participation in school.

Factors related to caring for the elderly among three generations of nurses

Fairley, JoAnna 01 January 2009 (has links)
Three generations of registered nurses make up the current nursing workforce: Baby boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y. Each generation brings its own values, behaviors, and beliefs to the workplace. The generational diversity among nurses needs to be assessed along with other factors, such as social values of the elderly, anxiety toward aging, and practice settings, to examine how each factor impacts registered nurses' attitudes toward caring for the elderly. An exploration of these factors is significant to nurse leaders, since nurses have been known to display negative attitudes toward the elderly. The theoretical foundation for this study was based upon Rosenberg's three-component view of attitudes. The bias scores from Palmore's Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ I) was used to indirectly measure the dependent variable, registered nurses' attitudes toward caring for the elderly. The independent variables were anxiety toward aging, social values of the elderly, generations, and practice settings. Kafer's Aging Opinion Survey was used to measure anxiety toward aging, and social values of the elderly. Practice settings and generations were identified by a demographic profile. The survey data were collected from 265 registered nurses. An Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to compare mean attitude scores between each generation and practice setting. Pearson's correlation coefficient examined the relationship between nurses' attitudes toward caring for the elderly, social value of the age, and anxiety toward aging. A multiple linear regression analyzed each independent variables prediction of nurses' attitude scores. Findings indicated a statistically significant association between the dependent and independent variables. Findings suggest the need to evaluate these variables prior to job placement to ensure quality healthcare provision to the elderly. Such action positively impact social change because nursing practices may be inspired to develop programs that encourage more favorable attitudes toward the elderly.

Tra emozioni, affetti e sentimenti. Riflessioni e prospettive pedagogiche / Among Emotions, Affections and Feelings. Pedagogical Considerations and Perspectives

AIMO, DARIA MARIANGELA 02 April 2007 (has links)
The present work of research meant to lay the bases of a pedagogy of human feeling. We intended to analyse the emotions, the affections and the feelings from a pedagogical and educational point of view. Beginning from literary contributions of the psychology and neuroscience, of the philosophy and anthropology and of the sociology, we delineated a complicated and well constructed vision about the essence, the value, and meaning of human sensibility and feeling. Because of in pedagogical consideration, emotions, affections and feelings, have always been object of attention in different ways, we have also critically showed the thought of some authors connected to the history of pedagogy and to the current pedagogy. It was due to the meaning of reflection about the importance of emotions, affections and feelings in the human being and in the educational relation; about the hart education in the growth of the child. After that, thinking about the education of human feeling, we realized semantic explanations regarding the terms of the phenomena of human feeling, we studied in depth the theme of emotional literacy and of the emotional reflectivity. At the end, starting from a micro research about family affectivity we talked about family as emotional and affective original nucleus; about the education parents role in the emotional growth; about the connection between emotional formation and the moral formation of the human being.
