Pelas páginas dos jornais: recortes indentitários e escolarização do social do negro em São Paulo (1920-1940) / From the pages of newspapers: scraps identitary and the social schooling of black in São Paulo (1920-1940)

Rosângela Ferreira de Souza 16 September 2013 (has links)
This research studied the social education process to which they were subjected Blacks from the city of São Paulo in the early decades of the 20th century through the analysis of two newspapers named the black paulista press: \"O Clarim da Alvorada\" and \"A Voz da Raça\". The perspective used in the research understands the process of schooling as a set of practices and actions promoted by subjects who believed in an education built according to your demands. The process to educate/instruct should be related to the peculiar demands of the group to which it was intended and come with material transformation, wealth distribution and social justice and equality. In this sense, from reading and analysis of articles, editorials, advertisements, sections of journals we tried to unravel what the editorial project of each one of the newspapers and its main implications in the formation of the black population. The importance of black associations as driving force of social achievements and black awareness of the importance of building a black identity in early twentieth century form elements analyzed in this work.

The Literacies of Child-Led Research: Children Investigating and Acting on Their Worlds

Gavin, Kara January 2021 (has links)
This study seeks to expand notions of research, what it can be and how it can be conducted, through focusing on children’s approaches to exploring their worlds. The purpose of this study was to examine how children employ literacies of research across spaces. Through this framework, I conceptualize children’s literacies of research to include the social practices children engage in when investigating issues that matter to them. Previous participatory studies with young people have focused on apprenticing youth and children into traditional research practices in order to then conduct studies with them that are relevant to their lives. This study builds on this work but begins by exploring the notion of research itself, seeking to understand children’s perspectives on how they examine topics of interest. Framed by critical and transformative theoretical frameworks, specifically critical childhoods, sociocultural approaches to literacy, and youth participatory action research (YPAR), this study engaged a small group of nine- and ten-year-old children, representing a range of racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds, as co-researchers. The following research questions shaped the study: How do nine- and ten-year-old children in a participatory research group engage with opportunities to follow their own lines of inquiry?; What themes do they investigate and how?; What literacy and research practices do they draw on, resist, remix, and/or transform and how?; and How do adults interact with children around child-led research? The findings suggest the playful, relational, dynamic, intertextual, and resistant natures of children’s literacies of research. This study was interrupted by the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and the research group transitioned to a virtual space. The findings also indicate the innovative ways children resisted the isolating circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic through creating and repurposing digital platforms to sustain friendships and connect with classmates. Children’s literacies of research have implications for how research is conceptualized and taught in literacy classrooms and in the academy as well as how researchers engage with children in studies.

First, from the distributive justice perspective, strong perceptions of distributive injustice are found among undergraduates from national minority and lower-middle and lower classes. The perceptions of distributive injustice can further be differentiated into injustice in educational accesses, educational processes, educational outputs and educational outcomes. Both undergraduates from national minority and from lower-middle and lower classes have registered strong sense of "accumulative distributive injustice" in their educational-advancement experiences. Attributions of educational distributive injustice to disparities of educational resources among regions have also been revealed in this study. However, educational injustice attributed to gender differences seems to be insignificant among perceptions of the subjects under study. / Second, from the relational justice perspective, the perceptions of educational injustice among undergraduates are investigated and categorized in accordance with Young's framework of relational injustice, namely exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence. It is common among undergraduates from national minority and lower-middle and lower classes to have relatively strong sense of relational injustice relating to cultural imperialism and violence. However, the experiences of violence revealed are mostly in the form of symbolic rather than physical violence. They also have substantive sense of relational injustice pertaining to marginalization and powerlessness. Experiences on exploitation are rarely reported among subjects from national minority and lower-middle and lower classes. This study finds that perceptions on relational injustice attributed to gender differences are insignificant among female subjects. / Social justice has risen to be one of the major social issues in Chinese mainland. As attainment of higher education has become one of primary determinants of attainments in social status among future generations, justice in higher education has therefore constituted as one of the areas of concerns among scholars in the field of Chinese education. / Third, differences in ethnicity and class have been revealed as the primary contributing factors to the perceptions of educational injustice among the subjects under study. Perceptions of educational injustice reported by undergraduates from national minority are mainly concentrated on subjects who are Islamite and Tibetan Buddhist from Xinjiang and Tibet. Among subjects of lower-middle and lower classes, subjects from rural areas have relatively stronger sense of injustice than those of comparable class backgrounds from urban areas. Therefore, it seems that disparities in class position and regional differences seem to have crystallized and asserted reinforcing effects on students' perceptions of educational injustice. / This study focuses on a group of the undergraduates from disadvantaged social backgrounds. It investigates their perceptions on educational injustice that they have experienced during their studies. The perceptions of injustice will be studied from the perspectives in both the distributive and relational justice. This study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the perceptions of justice among students of higher education in Chinese mainland. Twenty-two undergraduates from disadvantaged social backgrounds have been selected to be subjects of the study from four universities in Nanjing city of Jiangsu province. From the data collected, the following major findings are revealed. / This study has contributed to the scholarly discourses on distributive and relational justice by injecting first-hand qualitative data generated from the context of higher education in Chinese mainland. Furthermore, this study has provided some deep descriptions of the perceptions and experiences of educational injustice in a group disadvantaged background undergraduates in Chinese mainland. It is hoped that these data may help policy makers in formulating educational policy in the future. These data may also sensitizing teachers and other persons working in higher education sectors to address the perceptions and experiences of injustice among undergraduates from disadvantaged social backgrounds. Lastly, it is hoped that the study may be viewed as one of the tiny efforts that have been accumulated over the years by educators all over the world to constitute a relatively more equal and just educational system in human societies. / 钟景迅. / Adviser: Wing-kwong Tsang. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-03, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 283-307). / Electronic reproduction. Grade 12 examination results' top 20 positions : the need for the creation of sustainable learning environments for social justice in all schools

Mahlomaholo, S. January 2012 (has links)
Published Article / Why do African learners continue to be underrepresented in the top 20 positions of the Grade 12 examination results, and what can be done to remedy the situation? Yosso's notion of community cultural wealth shows that it is because our education continues to exclude the African learners' ways of knowing and being that the situation remains as it is. Analysing discourses of top performing white former Grade 12 learners, their teachers, their parents and their former African classmates, indicate that including modes of knowing of all learners in the curriculum irrespective of their race, class, disability or gender may help to create more socially just schooling, which is reflective of sustainable learning environments.

Factors influencing the dropout rate in primary schools in the Teyateyaneng region, Lesotho

Mohlouoa, Mamothebesoane Mookho Ntelele 05 1900 (has links)
The government of Lesotho and the parent expect all learners to attend school daily to receive the best education so that they can have a bright future. Education prepares the learner for life; if the learner drops out, he/she will struggle to succeed in life. The ever increasing rate of primary school dropouts in Lesotho is of great concern as it has negatively impacted on education in the area. The education system as well as the Basotho community has over the years been affected in various ways. For example, school dropouts become liabilities to the community as they are not able to contribute maximally to nation building. In most cases the dropouts engage in anti-social criminal activities. They also cause educational wastage in the form of resources. For these reasons, it was of paramount importance to determine the reasons for dropouts and establish the possible solutions to this national problem. This study has examined factors influencing learners to dropout. It employed a qualitative research design, using focus group interviews and field notes to succeed in investigating the causal factors of learner dropouts. Purposive sampling was used for the research because it was convenient for the research in terms of time. By using purposive sampling, the researcher was able to include participants according to the relevant criteria based on the emerging research question: What are the factors influencing learner dropout? The main objective was to identify the factors influencing primary school learner dropouts in Teyateyaneng, Lesotho. The focus group interviews were made up of one principal and five educators from each of the three primary schools which are located in Teyateyaneng in the Berea district of Lesotho. This type of sampling was used because the researcher wanted rich information from participants regarding the reasons for learners dropping out of school. It has emerged from the empirical findings of the study that learner dropout is inter alia caused by school and home related factors. The study revealed that some learners dropped out of school because they were orphans, while others dropped out of school after being absent for a number of weeks. Mainstream classrooms were also found to encourage dropping out because educators are not fully trained to address problems that learners with disabilities bring to the classrooms. Lack of parental involvement was found to drive learners away from schools and into the streets. Due to poor financial situations learners leave school and are forced into child labour to better their families‟living conditions. Student educators were found to be a factor because they lack the necessary skills in developing learners. Other learners decided to stop schooling totally after repeating a grade.Due to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS many learners are taken out of school to take care of their ill relatives. Some learners drop out of school after being abused and neglected. Due to the high unemployment rate and poverty in Lesotho, many learners quit school to support their families. All the above causes for learners dropping out of school have been discussed in detail in chapter four. These factors are complex issues, which should be handled by trained people. As learners spend a great ideal of time in their school environments, the educators play an integral part in alleviating the learners' social problems. It is essential that learners with social problems seek professional help at an early stage. Educators are obliged to help these learners although they are not necessarily equipped to give the required assistance. Suggestions and recommendations are mentioned to alleviate the situation. The study recommends that primary school learners should be encouraged to complete their primary level education. The Ministry of Education and Training should develop policy guidelines on inclusive education, facilitate legislation on compulsory basic education, improve teaching and learning conditions in all schools, abolish child labour, create employment opportunities for parents to prevent child labour, regulate traditional circumcision and solicit parental support. All the above suggestions hoped to be solutions to the problems of learner dropouts as discussed in detail in chapter two. / Inclusive Education / M. Ed. (Inclusive Education)
