The 'history of everyday life' and democratic culture in Britain, 1918-1968

Carter, Laura Joyce January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a study of popular social history and education in mid-twentieth century Britain. It argues that the ‘history of everyday life’ was a guiding framework for how ‘ordinary’ people sought to understand themselves and the world around them in this period. The ‘history of everyday life’ told stories of how the ‘uneventful’ lives, practices, feelings, and social and material environments of individuals changed across generations. It was the dominant form of popular social history in Britain from 1918 to the end of the 1960s, and it flourished long before academic social history championed similar themes, in a different idiom and for very different audiences. This thesis follows the ‘history of everyday life’ across a range of public-facing, educational institutions that were interested in producing histories for a mass audience. It delves into the myriad ways in which ‘amateur’ historians (often women) produced and disseminated ‘everyday’ histories. The ‘history of everyday life’ was a flexible intellectual resource available to both the radical left and conservative right. Whilst still attending to this full political spectrum, this thesis shifts focus away from explicit ideologies to the visual, emotional, and practical elements of historical activity.

Populární literatura a její místo na střední škole / Popular literature and its place in secondary school

Bogoczová, Markéta January 2019 (has links)
This master's thesis focuses on popular literature and its place on czech secondary schools with a research on how much this kind of literature is involved in the reading lists for the Maturita exam. Based on examples we will try to give some proposals not only for what literature lessons should look like and which questions should be answered by the students but we will also prepare worksheets for the Maturita exam where selected parts from works of popular literature will be used. As initial sources we will use basic dictionary works, guides for elementary and secondary schools, Trávníček's researches on reading and reading culture and also expert works concerning popular culture and literature for children and adolescents.

Under this view, health workers and health users are subjects of the educative process. Thus, this study aims to identify the key clinical and socio sanitary attributes and promote educational activities with patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in a Family Health Care Unit of the Western Sanitary District, in the city of Natal / RN. It is an action research which uses the references of the Theory of Liberating Education, which is based on a problem-solving pedagogy and that values dialogue in the process of understanding oneself and the world. Thirty-six diabetics, who are residents of the area covered by the health care unit, and thirty health workers participated in the survey. Each group had an average of twelve participants, and the meetings took place at the Unit?s hall, using conversation wheels, group dynamics, life narratives, experiences telling, movie exhibition and discussions, music, knowledge telling, desires, limitations, beliefs and values socially constructed. Data collection took place during the second half of two thousand and thirteen through Free Word Association Technique (FWAT), recordings of conversation wheels, participative observation, group dynamics, testimonies, questionnaires, life narratives and photographs. The empirical material was organized and subjected to three analyzes: thematic content (Bardin), textual statistics analysis by software IRAMUTEQ (Ratinaud), and photographic analysis (Edmund Feldman). The data analyses originated words, expressions, categories, themes and creative situations showing that popular health education is in process of construction, but still very incipient in primary care. The National Policy on Popular Health Education shows us the necessary ways for the transformation of health practices and the build of a more shared and solidary society. The meetings could be place to reverse that normative logic that has been happening over the years in primary care, but that by itself is not enough. It is possible to conclude that the use of active practices, increasing of listening and training on Popular Health Education will enable changes in the scenario where users and health workers deal with diabetes mellitus. Thus we see the popular health education is being timidly incorporated to the educational process of the subjects involved in this study, and far away from the principles of participation, organization of political work, increase opportunities for dialogue, respect, solidarity and tolerance among different actors involved in addressing the health problems that are fundamental to the improvement in building healthy practices of primary care / A Educa??o Popular em Sa?de, em sua dimens?o libertadora, remete indiv?duos e grupos ? troca de saberes e experi?ncias, permitindo-lhes associar a sa?de ao resultado das suas condi??es de vida levando a uma emancipa??o do sujeito.

La marchandisation de l'engagement des jeunes : les "dérives" du service civique à la Ligue de l'enseignement / Commodifying young people's civic involvement : how state-funded civic service malfunctions in the Ligue de l'enseignement

Ihaddadène, Florence 14 March 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims at shedding light on the transformation of public federations and their relationship to government through a monograph about how state-funded civic service was implemented in the Ligue de l’enseignement (a France’s popular education federation) be-tween 2012 and 2016. Through the analysis of several " malfunctions " mentioned by the very people implementing this public policy, this research sheds light on the consequences suffered by its beneficiaries, its workers and the organizations. It will show how, in the context of new public management, the rise of this sort of arrangement in an organization such as the Ligue de l’enseignement leads to a rationalization of the Ligue’s human and financial resources that end up benefitting its “performance”. The first part of this thesis introduces the context in which this arrangement was created: in the absence of a comprehensive policy for youth, the structural transformations of public organizations allowed for an overall consensus on civic service. The second part reveals the unpaid labor on which the existence of this arrangement hinges: first, the volunteer’s, who seek independence, then their supervisors’ or managers’, who have to conceal as well as highlight the work the volunteers are doing, and finally the advisors’, whose training/professionalization is hampered by process standardization. The final part shows how these young people’s willingness to stand up for their causes gets com-modified: on one hand, managerialization hides how federations are put through competitive selections; on the other hand, the existence of government procurements hides the monopoly of the Ligue de l’enseignement.
