High-sensitivity Radioactive Xenon Monitoring and High-accuracy Neutron-proton Scattering Measurements

Johansson, Cecilia January 2004 (has links)
Two aspects of applied nuclear physics have been studied in this thesis; Monte Carlo simulations for high-sensitivity monitoring of radioactive xenon and high-accuracy neutron-proton scattering measurements for neutron physics applications and fundamental physics. The Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for two systems for detection of radioactive xenon, using the MCNP code. These systems, designed for monitoring of violations of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, are based on coincident detection of electrons and gamma rays, emitted in beta decay of xenon nuclides produced in nuclear weapons explosions. In general, the simulations describe test data well, and the deviations from experimental data are understood. The neutron-proton scattering measurements have been performed by measuring the differential np scattering cross section at 96 MeV in the angular range θc.m.= 20° – 76°. Together with an earlier data set at the same energy, covering the angles θc.m.= 74° – 180°, a new data set has been formed in the angular range θc.m.= 20° – 180°. This extended data set has been normalised to the experimental total np cross section, resulting in a renormalisation of the earlier data of 0.7 %, which is well within the stated normalisation uncertainty for that experiment. The results on forward np scattering are in reasonable agreement with theory models and partial wave analyses and have been compared with data from the literature.

Neutron Scattering at 96 MeV

Öhrn, Angelica January 2008 (has links)
Data on elastic scattering of 96 MeV neutrons from 56Fe, 89Y and 208Pb in the angular interval 10-70° are presented. The previously published data on 208Pb have been extended, as a new method has been developed to obtain additional information at the most forward angles. The results are compared with phenomenological and microscopic optical potentials. The theory predictions are in general in good agreement with the experimental data. A study of the deviation of the zero-degree cross section from Wick's limit has been performed. The data on 208Pb are in agreement with Wick's limit, while those on lighter nuclei overshoot the limit significantly. A novel analysis method has been developed to obtain the inelastic neutron emission cross sections from the existing 56Fe data. The method is based on folding a trial spectrum with the response of the detector setup. The data cover the angular interval 26-65° and an excitation energy range of 0-45 MeV, ranges hitherto not studied. The results are compared with nuclear model predictions and found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Estudo da reação 10B+120Sn em energias em torno da barreira Coulombiana utilizando diferentes técnicas experimentais / Study of 10B+120Sn reaction at energy around Coulomb barrier using different experimental techniques

André de Sousa Freitas 09 May 2018 (has links)
The 10B+120Sn reaction was measured at the \"Laboratório Aberto de Física Nuclear\" (LAFN, acronym in Portuguese) of the \"Instituto de Física da Universidade de São Paulo\", at energies around the Coulomb barrier (VB = 35 MeV). Angular distribuitions for the elastic and inelastic scattering were obtained, and the transfer channel of a neutron from the target to the projectile was also identified. Besides that, another set of measurements were carried out using the gamma-particle coincidence techinique with the ancillary system of scintillators and gamma-ray detectors Saci-Perere (acronym of \"Sistema Ancilar de Cintiladores e Pequeno Espectrômetro de Radiação Eletromagnética com Rejeição de Espalhamento\"). Such measurements have allowed the identification of the complete fusion process through the detection of gamma-rays coming from the compound nuclei 127Cs, formed by the absorption of the total projectile charge by the target, followed by the evaporation of neutrons. Events related to the incomplete fusion process, originated from the breakup of 10B, were also identified. A theoretical description of the main experimental results has been performed within the coupled channel formalism, using the São Paulo potential to represent the real part of the nuclear interaction between the two reacting nuclei.

Estados aniônicos da para-Benzoquinona / Anionic states of para-Benzoquinone

Julio Cesar Ruivo Costa 11 October 2016 (has links)
This work present the first study of low-energy anionic states in para-benzoquinone (p-BQ) by electron scattering calculations. The elastic scattering calculations were done in the fixed-nuclei approximation, with the Schwinger multichannel method implemented with pseudopotentials of Bachelet, Hamann and Schlüter, in the static-exchange and in the static-exchange plus polarization approximations. The integral cross sections were performed in two target geometries optimized for the neutral and anion ground states. The anionic states found were characterized and compared with experimental results obtained by electron transfer spectroscopy (ETS). Three * states were observed, a bound state and two metastable, in good agreement with experimental results. A Feshbach resonance was found in calculations, also it is observed experimentally and it was suggested in several theoretical studies of bound state. It is believed that the approach used to describe the target excited states can be reconsidered, as it is suggested a more sophisticated approach to be used in future calculations. With this study, a better understanding of experimental results ETS is possible, as it allowed an interpretation of theoretical studies of the anionic states of p-BQ. Moreover, this work enables further scattering studies involving more complex quinones.

"MEDIDAS DE ESPALHAMENTO ELÁSTICO RESSONANTE 17O + p" / "MEASUREMENTS OF RESONANT ELASTIC SCATTERING 17O + p"

Kelly Cristina Cezaretto Pires 07 June 2006 (has links)
Angular distributions of the elastic scattering 17O + p and of the transfer reaction p(17O, a)14N have been measured at the energies, ECM = 1.39 and 2.33 MeV. The 17O beam was produced by the Pelletron accelerator at the energies of 25 and 42 MeV. The measurements have been performed using plastic targets of aluminized mylar (C10H10O4) and polyethylene (CH2) with thicknesses 354µg/cm² and 6mg/cm², respectively. The experimental angular distributions of the elastic scattering and of the transfer reaction have been analyzed by optical model and Distorted Waves Born Approximation (DWBA) calculations, both taking into account the compound nucleus contribution via Hauser-Feshbach calculations. At 42 MeV, an excitation function of the elastic scattering has been measured using the Resonant Scattering Method with thick targets of (CH2). Resonances in the 18F compound nucleus are observed.
