Intercambialidade de componentes protéticos em diferentes marcas de implantes / Evaluation of the connecting accuracy of interchanged prosthetic abutments to different dental implants using scanning electron microscopy

Piero Rocha Zanardi 05 November 2012 (has links)
The present study evaluated the interchangeability of prosthetic components for external hexagon implants by measuring the precision of the implant/abutment (I/A) interface using scanning electron microscopy. Ten implants for each of three brands (SIN, Conexão, Neodent) were tested with their respective abutments (milled CoCr collar rotational and non-rotational) and that of an alternative manufacturer (Microplant) in randomly arranged I/A combinations. The degree of interchangeability between the various brands of components was defined using the original abutment interface gap with its respective implant as the benchmark dimension. Accordingly, when the result for a given component placed on an implant was equal to or smaller then that gap measured when the component of the same brand as the implant was positioned, interchangeability was considered valid. Some degree of maladjustment was observed on all specimens. Generally, the non-rotational component was more accurate than its rotational counterpart. The latter samples ranged from 0.6 16.9m, with a median of 4.6m; the former from 0.3 12.9m, with a median of 3.4m. Specimens with the abutment and fixture from Conexão had larger microgap than the original set for Sin and Neodent (p<0.05). Even though the latter systems had similar results with their respective components, their interchanged abutments did not reproduce the original accuracy. The results suggest that the alternative brand abutment would have compatibility with all systems while the other brands were not completely interchangeable.

The hybridization of dental hard tissues may be accomplished by both approaches, the etch rinse or the self-etching. The self-etching approach provides fewer steps and less sensitivity in clinical technique. The objective of this study was to analyze the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) immediately and after aging with thermocycling of adhesive systems in one step and two steps, considering the control group treated with conventional adhesive system. The occlusal surface of 24 third molars was removed, and then the root was cut to obtain a 5 mm thick disc, with the average dentin surface. The surfaces were standardized and distributed randomly into four groups according to the adhesive system tested on: G1-Single Bond 2, G2- Clearfil SE Bond, G3- Adper Easy One e G4- Clearfil TriS. About the treated surfaces were fabricated composite resin blocks, Filtek Z350 XT, blade A2 body. The samples were selected to produce sticks with approximately 1mm2 cross sectional area. Each group was divided again into two, namely: samples stored in deionized water and aged for 24 hours (1000 cycles). The specimens were submitted to microtensile testing and the values obtained were statistically analyzed by two-way ANOVA and the Tukey multiple comparison test (p <0.05). The classification of types of fracture was performed by SEM. The highest values were presented by groups: G1, G5, and G2, G6, with no statistical difference between them. The lowest values were performed by groups G4 and G8 presenting statistical difference in the groups treated with the conventional adhesive. From the analysis of the fractures were observed that fracture reduction type I (between hybrid layer and adhesive layer) of the groups submitted to microtensile testing after 24 hours compared to their counterparts submitted to aging by termocycling. It can be concluded that the best performance in microtensile test was made by conventional and self adhesive two steps. No association was found between the bond strength after 24 of aging.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the post-cement-dentin adhesive interface quality and the effect of different filling materials and cleaning agents on the bond strength of glass fiber posts to primary root dentin. This study included 156 roots of bovine primary teeth which were endodontically treated and assigned to four groups (39 teeth each group) according to filling materials: 1 - control (no material); 2 - Calen® paste + zinc oxide (ZO); 3 - Vitapex® paste; and 4 - Calcipex II® paste. After seven days, the filling materials were removed and the roots for each material subdivided into 3 groups (13 teeth) according to cleaning agents: A - No cleaning (control); B - 70% ethanol; and C - Tergenform®. Glass fiber posts were luted using dual polymerized resin cement (RelyXMR ARC) after 35% acid etching, rinsing and application of the adhesive system (Adper Single BondTM 2). The specimens were stored for 7 days, sectioned and prepared for push-out bond strength test (n=10) and interface analysis by silver nitrate leakage (n=3). A push-out test was performed using a universal test machine (EMIC) at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data obtained in Kgf were converted into MPa and submitted to two-way ANOVA (filling materials x cleaning agents) and Tukey tests (p<0.05). After the push-out test, representative samples of the groups were submitted to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to illustrate the failure modes. The adhesive interface between dentin/cement and cement/post were also analyzed by SEM. The leakage (expressed in percentage) was measured by a single examiner previously calibrated (intra-examiner coincidence level = 98%) using a silver nitrate solution. Data obtained for leakage were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.05) and descriptive analysis. Interaction was observed between filling materials and cleaning agents, concerning bond strength values (p=0.0043). Calen® paste+ZO with 70% ethanol showed the highest values, significantly different from the groups using no cleaning agents. Vitapex® and Calcipex® showed no significant difference between cleaning agents. The lowest bond strength values were found for the control with Tergenform®. No statistical difference was observed between groups concerning silver leakage (20.63% to 56.62%) in the adhesive interface between cement and dentin. In conclusion, filling materials and cleaning agents influenced the bond strength, but not the adhesive interface between intracanal posts and root dentin; as a cleaning agent, 70% ethanol responded better to Calen® paste+ZO; cleaning agents are not required for Vitapex® and Calcipex®; all groups showed leakage in the adhesion interface between cement resin/dentin root, regardless of the filling materials and cleaning agents studied / Mestrado / Odontopediatria / Mestre em Odontologia

January 2017 (has links)
Forty dentin specimens were impregnated with endodontic sealer (AH Plus). Specimens were cleansed according to the following protocols (n = 10): G1 (E), only RD; G2 (ER), only ER; G3 (E + Cs), RD and Cs; G4 (ER + Cs), ER and Cs. No treatment was performed in G5 (control). The specimens were subjected to SEM in order to evaluate the residues persistence (500x) and open dentinal tubules counting (2000x). Another 50 specimens were prepared, subjected to similar procedures and cleaning protocols.7 days later, composite-resin-made specimens were performed on dentin using etch-and-rinse adhesive system, then submitted to micro-shear test. G2 and G4 showed higher residues persistence and lower incidence of open dentinal tubules than G1 and G3 (P <0.05). No difference was found between G1 and G3 or G2 and G4 (P> 0.05). Adhesive system bond strength was similar in all groups (P> 0.05). Microabrasion negatively affected the cleaning protocols action, all groups presented residues on the dentin surface. However, 7 days later the protocols did not affect the bond strength of etch-and-rinse adhesive system to dentin previously impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer. / Doutor

Karakterizacija strukture i adhezivna svojstva gleđi / Characterization of the structure and adhesive properties of enamel

Vicko Kristina 07 December 2020 (has links)

/
Dental enamel is a substrate for the adhesion of direct and indirect fillings, venners, splints, fissure sealants and orthodontic brackets. Adhesion between the material and dental tissue is key to success of various interventions in dentistry. Despite the abundance and variety of new materials, adhesion has not been fully resolved. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the mechanical and chemical properties of the enamel after treatment with different conditioners. Determine the hardness and modulus of elasticity, the chemical content of calcium and phosphate minerals in the surface layer of the enamel before and after etching with different acids, and define the effect of enamel prismaticity on the degree of demineralisation by applying different acids. METHODS: An in vitro study was performed on extracted human teeth. In relation to the conditioner used, 192 were analyzed, of which 96 were permanent teeth and 96 were decidous teeth. Prepared enamel samples were analyzed before and after the application of four types of conditioner: 37% orthophosphoric acid (Kerr, Gel etchant), 10% polyacrylic acid (GC, Dentin Conditioner), phosphoric acid ester monomer (GC G bond), hydroxyethyl methacrylate with phosphoric acid ( 3M Unitek, Transbond ™ Plus Self Etching Primer ). The hardness and modulus of elasticity of the enamel were determined by nanoindentation, the structure of the enamel surface layer by scanning electron microscopy, while the chemical composition of the enamel surface layer was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. RESULTS: The results of the modulus of elasticity within the group of decidous teeth indicated statistically significant differences between the results of untreated occlusal surface and all treated occlusal surface samples, while the analysis of the hardness of the enamel in the same group indicated statistically significant differences between the values of untreated and all treated samples, on all surfaces except buccal surface samples treated with polyacrylic acid. In the group of permanent teeth, there are statistically significant differences in the value of the modulus of elasticity between the samples treated with orthophosphoric acid, regardless of the tooth surface, compared to the groups in which other conditioners were used, except when the samples of the lingual surface of permanent teeth were treated with orthophosphoric acid in comparison to same sample group treated with Transbond. The results of the hardness of the permanent tooth enamel showed statistically significant differences between the untreated, control group and all groups of conditioners used, regardless of the tooth surface tested. Each conditioner applied changed the surface morphology of the sample. Orthophosphoric and polyacrylic acid, to a large extent, influenced the appearance of etching patterns type 1 and type 2. Using G bond and Transbond alongside to type 1, a large proportion of the etching pattern was type 5. Analysis of the chemical components of the surface layer of the enamel samples before and after conditioning indicated reduction of the proportion of analyzed elements, except for oxygen whose mass fraction increased after treatment with all conditioners in the permanent and deciduous teeth group. CONCLUSION: The values of the hardness of the enamel and the values of the modulus of elasticity decrease significantly after etching of the enamel to a degree that depends on the conditioner applied. The etching effect on aprismatic enamel is significantly smaller than the degree of demineralisation of the prismatic enamel in all conditioners tested. The chemical content of calcium and phosphate minerals in the surface layer of the enamel is significantly lower after the conditioning, however the Ca and P ratio does not change.

Bone regeneration in novel porous titanium implants

Khouja, Naseeba, 1981- January 2010 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vivo performance of the novel press-fit dental implant fabricated via electron beam melting (EBM, Southern Methodist Univ.) and compare it to a commercially-available porous-coated press-fit dental implant (Endopore, Innova Corp.). Twelve cylindrical shaped implants 3 mm in diameter x 5 mm long were made by EBM (Southern Methodist Univ.) using Ti6Al4V ELI alloy. Twelve commercial implants (Endopore, Innova Corp.) of the same geometry were used as controls. Samples were implanted in rabbit tibia and retrieved six weeks postoperatively. Six specimens from each implant type were embedded undecalcified, sectioned, and stained with toluidine blue (Sigma) for histomorphometry analysis. Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) was measured. On the six remaining samples from each implant type, the mechanical properties were evaluated by pushout test on a material testing machine. The samples were loaded at a loading rate of 1 mm/min. The pushout strength was measured and the apparent shear stiffness was calculated. The results were analyzed with a paired-t test. The histology shows osteointegration of surrounding bone with both implant types. Bone was found to grow into the porous space between the beads. Both the Endopore (Innova Corp.) and the EBM (Southern Methodist Univ.) showed similar BIC. The mean BIC for the Endopore (Innova Corp.) and EBM (Southern Methodist Univ.) implant were 35 ± 6% and 32 ± 9%, respectively. It failed to reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). The peak pushout force for Endopore (Innova Corp.) and EBM (Southern Methodist Univ.) implants were 198.80 ± 61.29 N and 243.21 ± 69.75 N, respectively. The apparent shear stiffness between bone and implant for the Endopore (Innova Corp.) and EBM (Southern Methodist Univ.) implants were 577.36 ± 129.99 N/mm; and 584.48 ± 146.63 N/mm, respectively. Neither the peak pushout force nor the apparent shear stiffness of the implants was statistically different between the two groups (p > 0.05). The results suggest that the implants manufactured by EBM (Southern Methodist Univ.) perform equally well as the commercial implant Endopore (Innova Corp.) in this current animal model.

Poultry Litter Ash as an Alternative Fertilizer Source for Corn

Ervin, Clara 12 November 2019 (has links)
Poultry litter ash (PLA) is a co-product from manure-to-energy systems that originated in response to increased poultry litter (PL) volumes generated in concentrated poultry production regions. Investigating PLA as a crop fertilizer is an alternative solution to balancing poultry and crop regional nutrient cycling in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As the expanding world population places pressure on the poultry industry to meet consumption demands, increased PL production presents an obstacle to identify alternative uses for increased volumes. Currently, Virginia produces 44 million broilers with PL produced predominately in the Shenandoah Valley and Eastern Shore. Likewise, a growing world population places pressure on crop production areas and subsequently finite natural resources used for crop fertilization. Poultry litter ash is an alternative phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) source enhancing transportation logistics, repurposing PL nutrients, and offers dual purpose as a fertilizer and an energy source when compared to PL. Three PLA products [(fluidized bed bulk (FB Bulk), fluidized bed fly (FB Fly), and combustion Mix (CMix)], two manufactured co-products [(granulated poultry litter ash (GPLA), and ash coated urea (ACU)] were evaluated as P, K, and N sources for corn (Zea Mays L.) production in comparison to industry fertilizers [(PL, triple superphosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (KCL), and urea). A comprehensive examination of elemental composition, P speciation, P and K solubility, improved functionality into granulized forms, and field testing were conducted to discern PLA potential as an alternative fertilizer source. Poultry litter ash products were evaluated by total elemental analysis, backscatter-electron dispersive (BSED) microscopy, and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Poultry litter ash elemental concentrations were highly variable ranging from 50.6 to 102.0 g P kg -1 and 62.6 to 120.0 g K kg -1 and were comparatively higher than PL concentrations. Phosphorus structures that provided and controlled P solubility were Ca and Ca-Mg-phosphate compounds. Spectroscopy confirmed Ca structures as predominately monetite (dicalcium phosphate anhydrous; CaHPO4; log K ̊ 0.30) and brushite (dicalcium phosphate dihydrate; CaHPO4.2H20; 0.63 log K ̊ ) species that were supported by BSED and elemental stoichiometric ratios (Ca:P; 1.12 to 1.71:1). Additionally, GPLA acidified from FB Fly had higher brushite and monetite percentages described by spectra models, translating into a more soluble Ca-phosphate species when compared to FB Fly original P species. Granulated poultry litter acidulation trials successfully identified a desired granulation point of 29% (14.5 g acid to 50 g PLA) phosphoric acid (75% H3PO4) acidulation. Acidulation dose response relationships created simple linear regression (SLR) equations that sufficiently (R2 > 0.80) described changes in total measurable P and water soluble P, pH, and exothermic reaction temperatures to increasing H3PO4 acidulation. Solubility tests included: sequential extraction, particle size effect on solubility, carbon effect on water soluble P, and Mehlich-1 extraction of PLA sources that confirmed decreased P solubility. A majority PLA P was found in bound plant unavailable fractions (87.7 to 97.7% P of total P). Granulated poultry litter ash had improved P plant available P of 36.0% P of total P. Carbon (C) effects on PLA P were examined by ashing PLA samples in a muffle furnace at 550 ̊C. Differences in total carbon content negatively impacted FB Bulk and CMix total P (1.30 and 4.56 g P kg -1); however, muffle furnace temperatures increased FB Fly total P by 6.74 g P kg -1. All fertilizer products were investigated under field conditions in separate P, K and N corn studies across Virginia coastal plain soils to determine fertilizer effects on corn plant parameters [(most mature leaf (V6), corn ear leaf (R1), and grain (R6)]. Poultry litter P treatments, averaged over rate, recorded highest yield in both years. At eight of nine field sites, FB Bulk resulted in numerically or significantly higher Mehlich-1 concentrations than other P sources post-harvest. Although Mehlich-1 P increased, yield and plant parameters did not; which leads to the conclusion that PLA sources increased soil residual P that did not translate into immediate plant availability recorded within a growing season. Across plant efficacy parameters examined, PLA K is a comparable nutrient source and improved plant parameters when compared to control. Eighteen out of twenty-one plant parameters examined found similar ACU and urea effects on N concentrations. Therefore, ACU is a comparable N source to urea. When compared to industry fertilizer sources, we concluded that PLA is a slowly available P source, decreased P availability negatively affected early plant growth, K is a comparable nutrient source and improved plant parameters compared to control, and ACU effectively provided N to maintain sufficient corn growth. In conclusion, PLA co-products serve as a densified nutrient source that may provide plant available nutrients if processed to aid in nutrient distribution to grain producing areas. / Doctor of Philosophy / Poultry litter ash (PLA) is a co-product from manure-to-energy systems that originated in response to increased poultry litter (PL) volumes generated in concentrated poultry production regions. Investigating PLA as an alternative crop fertilizer is essential to balancing poultry and crop regional nutrient cycling in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As the expanding world population places pressure on the poultry industry to meet consumption demands, heightened PL production presents an obstacle to identify alternative uses for increased volumes. Currently, Virginia produces 44,683,904 broilers with PL produced predominately in the Shenandoah Valley and Eastern Shore. Likewise, a growing world population places pressure on crop production areas and subsequently finite natural resources used for fertilization vital to maintaining crop yields. Poultry litter ash, a co-product from manure-to-energy systems, is an alternative phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) source enhancing transportation logistics, repurposing PL nutrients, and offers dual purpose as a fertilizer and an energy source when compared to PL. In this dissertation, three PLA products [(fluidized bed bulk (FB Bulk), fluidized bed fly (FB Fly), and combustion Mix (CMix)], two manufactured co-products [(granulated poultry litter ash (GPLA), and ash coated urea (ACU)] were evaluated as P, K, and N source for corn (Zea Mays L.) production in comparison to industry fertilizers (PL, triple superphosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (KCL), and urea). Each of the following chapters provides a comprehensive examination of the following topics: elemental composition, P speciation, P and K solubility, improved functionality into granulized forms, and field testing designed to provide parameters to conclude PLA potential as an alternative P, K and N source. In the second chapter, PLA products were evaluated by total elemental analysis, backscatter-electron dispersive (BSED) microscopy, and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Poultry litter ash elemental concentrations are highly variable and are comparatively higher than PL concentrations. Phosphorus structure and species identified Ca as the primary element controlling P structure and subsequent solubility. The third component of this dissertation is granulation trials investigating phosphoric acid effects on granulizing and increasing total and water soluble P. Our results identified 29% (14.5 g acid to 50 g PLA) phosphoric acid acidulation for desired granule size. The third dissertation component examines PLA solubility. The results demonstrated PLA decreased P water solubility when compared to industry fertilizer sources. Granulated poultry litter ash demonstrated improved P plant availability due to the granulation process. The final and fourth dissertation components investigated PLA sources under field conditions in separate P, K and N corn studies across Virginia coastal plain soils to determine fertilizer effects on corn plant parameters. Minority of plant parameters tested revealed P control yielded numerically higher P concentrations than PLA P sources tested. Poultry litter P treatments, averaged over rate, recorded highest yield in both years. At eight of nine field sites, FB Bulk resulted in numerically or significantly higher Mehlich-1 concentrations than other P sources post-harvest. Although Mehlich-1 P concentrations increased, yield and plant parameters did not; which leads to the conclusion that PLA sources increased soil residual P that did not translate into immediate plant availability recorded within a growing season. Across plant efficacy parameters examined, PLA K is a comparable nutrient source and improved plant parameters when compared to controls. The majority of plant parameters examined found similar ACU and urea effects on N concentrations. Therefore, ACU is a comparable N source to urea. When compared to industry fertilizer sources, field results concluded that PLA is a slowly available P source, decreased P availability negatively affected early plant growth, K is a comparable nutrient source and improve plant parameters compared to control, ACU effectively provides N to maintain sufficient corn growth. In conclusion, PLA co-products serve as a densified nutrient source that may provide plant available nutrients if processed to aid in nutrient distribution to grain producing areas.

Endodontski retretman-analiza skening elektronskom mikroskopijom / Endodontic retreatment –scanning electron microscopy analysis

Vukoje Karolina 09 December 2015 (has links)

/
In cases when endodontic treatment fails, it is necessary to retreat the root canal. Orthograde endodontic retreatment requires the removal of the existing root filling material with additional cleaning, disinfection and refilling of the canal. An important step during retreatment is complete removal of existing filling materials, to regain access to all parts of the canal system. The aim of the doctoral thesis was to investigate the cleanliness of root canal walls after removal of two different obturation material. The retreatment efficacy was observed depending on the usage of solvent and different hand or rotary instruments. The amount of residual material on the canal walls was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, apical transportation of the obturation material, working time and frequency of instrument damage during retreatment was recorded. Materials and Methods: The total sample consisted of 125 extracted, single-rooted human teeth. After root canal preparation, 120 teeth were divided in two groups and filled using two different obturation materials (gutta-percha and resilon). Depending on the technique of removing these materials, the groups were further divided, in relation to the used instruments (Hedstrom, ProTaper and Twisted File), as well as in relation to the use of solvent (with or without chloroform). The remaining 5 tooth without canal filling were used as a control group. After root canal desopturation, the longitudinaly splitted root halves were observed on SEM. Microphotography of each third were made at magnification of 500x. The amount of remaining filling material was evaluated by using a scale. Open dentinal tubules were counted on microphotographies made at a magnificiation of 1000x, on a surface that was always constant. Results: Analysis of the results indicated a significant difference in the cleanliness of the canal walls depending on the used obturation material. Cleanliness of the canal walls was higher after gutta-percha removal than after the removal of resilon. Rotary instruments were more effective in removing gutta-percha and Hedstrom hand files better removed resilon. ProTaper instruments left more residual material on canal walls, however endodontic retreatment with these instruments was the fastest. The application of solvent significantly contributed to faster material removal, while the impact on the increase of canal cleanliness was not significant. The largest amount of material remained in the apical third, regardless of the type of material removed and instruments used, and also regardless whether solvent was used for retreatment. The frequency of instrument deformation and fracture was significantly higher when Twisted File instruments were used. Apical transportation of material had a significantly higher occurrence during resilon removal and when manual Hedstrom files were used. Conclusion: Cleanliness of the canal walls was higher after the removal of gutta-percha than after the removal of resilon. The use of solvent is not significant on the increase of canal wall cleanliness, but significantly shortens the time needed for retreatment. There is a difference in the cleanliness of root canal walls depending on the used instruments. Engine-driven rotary instruments and the use of a solvent significantly shortens the time needed for endodontic retreatment.

Reološka svojstva endodontskih silera / Rheological properties of endodontic sealers

Premović Milica 09 December 2016 (has links)

Definisanje i razumevanje reoloških svojstava endodontskih silera u različitim uslovima doprinosi pravilnom rukovanju materijalom shodno primenjenoj tehnici opturacije. Cilj istraživanja: ispitivanje viskoelastičnih svojstava tri različita endodontska silera, uključujući i tečenje / prodor silera u dentinske tubule u kombinaciji sa različitim tehnikama opturacije.
/
Introduction: The root canal system has a complex anatomy with main root canal and many lateral, secondary, accessory canals, apical isthmuses and deltas, as well as numerous branched dentinal tubules. Due to its complexity, the root canal system cannot be completely cleaned, shaped and disinfected using available techniques of instrumentation, irrigation and intracanal medication. The aim of root canal filling is to achieve a three-dimensional obturation of the root canal space, entomb residual bacteria and prevent their penetration into the periradicular tissue. Defining and understanding the rheological properties of endodontic sealers in different conditions contributes to the proper handling of the material according to the obturation technique applied. The aim: testing the viscoelastic properties of three different endodontic sealers, including the flow / sealer penetration into dentinal tubules in combination with different obturation techniques. Materials and Methods: The total sample consisted of 132 mesiobuccal and mesiolingual root canals of first mandibular molars. After root canal preparation using ProTaper endodontic instruments, in crown-down manner, the sample is divided into three groups depending on the tested sealers (AH Plus, Sealapex and EndoREZ) and additionally into four subgroups according to the obturation technique applied (cold lateral compaction, single-cone technique, carrier – based obturation and warm vertical compaction), making a total of 12 groups of 11 canals. After root canal obturation, the samples were sectioned horizontally at 3, 5 and 8mm from the anatomical foramen, in order to get the sections that correspond to the apical, middle and coronary third of the canal. The coronal surfaces of the sections were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The maximum depth of sealer penetration was measured and expressed in micrometers and as a percent of the total distance: canal dentinal wall - the outer surface of the root. The viscoelastic properties of endodontic sealers were measured using frequency sweep test on dynamic oscillatory rheometer, at four different temperatures: 25°C, 35°C, 40°C and 65°C. Results: Obturation techniques with AH Plus that applied heat and pressure produced a significantly higher depth of sealer penetration into dentinal tubules as compared to techniques that did not apply. The application of heat and pressure during obturation with Sealapex had no a significant role in the depth of sealer penetration into dentinal tubules. Obturation techniques with EndoREZ that did not apply heat and pressure produced a significantly higher depth of sealer penetration into dentinal tubules as compared to techniques that applied. The depth of penetration of all three endodontic sealers into dentinal tubules was the highest in the coronary third, followed by the second and was significantly lower in the apical third of the root canal. AH Plus, Sealapex and EndoREZ exhibited viscoelastic character with dominant values of elastic over viscous modulus, at all specified temperatures, in the range of applied frequencies and shear stresses. Complex viscosity of all sealers decreased as the frequency increased at all temperatures. AH Plus showed decreased viscosity as the temperature increased, while Sealapex and EndoREZ demonstrated opposite behavior. Correlation analysis has established a strong negative correlation between the complex viscosity of the tested sealers and the depth of penetration into dentinal tubules: the decrease of complex viscosity increase the depth of sealer penetration into dentinal tubules. Conclusion: The choice of endodontic sealer should be based on the obturation technique applied.

For the fracture strength test, standard MOD cavities were prepared in 100 upper premolars, which were divided in two storage times (24 hours and 6 months with 1000 thermocycles), and in each group, sub-groups were randomly formed as follow: group 1 direct composite resin restoration(Filtek Z250 and Adper Single Bond 3M/ESPE) without bevel (butt joint); group 2 beveled direct composite resin restoration; group 3 indirect composite resin inlay (Z250 and Rely X ARC 3M/ESPE) without bevel(butt joint); group 4 beveled indirect composite resin inlay; group 5 sound teeth; group 6 teeth with MOD preparations (no restorations). For the retention test, the incisal edge of 90 lower incisors was sectioned, and divided in the same restorative groups as described above (except group 6). To evaluate gap presence or absence, proximal box cavities were prepared in 24 human third molars, which were restored with direct or indirect composite restorations, with or without bevel, similar to above described and examined under SEM evaluation. Data was statistically analysed by A NOVA, Tukey and t-student tests for fracture strength and retention tests, and Fisher s exact test for gap formation (=0,05). At the 24 hours, beveled restorations exhibited higher fracture strength values than non beveled restorations and most of the tested groups showed resistance similar or superior than sound teeth. After 6 months, the best results were obtained for beveled inlays and the worst values were observed for butt joint direct restorations. In the retention test, beveled restorations had superior performances than non-beveled restorations, in both periods of time. For both tests, a 6-month storage time and thermal cycling produced significant properties decrease in groups 1, 2 and 4 showed. Under SEM examination, no difference was observed among groups after 24 hours. However, after 6 months, beveled restotations remained without gap formation and they had better performance than butt joint restorations. Pearson correlation test showed positive correlation between fracture strength and retention tests. Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that aging impaired adhesive properties, bevel improved the performance in all tests and generally indirect restorations were not superior to direct restorations.
