Public news network: digital sampling to create a hybrid media feed

Stenner, Jack Eric 30 September 2004 (has links)
A software application called Public News Network (PNN) is created in this thesis, which functions to produce an aesthetic experience in the viewer. The application engenders this experience by presenting a three-dimensional virtual world that the viewer can navigate using the computer mouse and keyboard. As the viewer navigates the environment she sees irregularly shaped objects resting on an infinite ground plane, and hears an ethereal wind. As the viewer nears the objects, the sound transforms into the sound of television static and text is displayed which identifies this object as representative of an episode of the evening news. The viewer "touches" the episode and a "disembodied" transcript of the broadcast begins to scroll across the screen. With further interaction, video of the broadcast streams across the surfaces of the environment, distorted by the shapes upon which it flows. The viewer can further manipulate and repurpose the broadcast by searching for words contained within the transcript. The results of this search are reassembled into a new, re-contextualized display of video containing the search terms stripped from their original, pre-packaged context. It is this willful manipulation that completes the opportunity for true meaning to appear.

Breaking the Fifth Wall: Enquiry into Contemporary Shadow Theatre

Kent, Lynne January 2005 (has links)
Practising Shadow Theatre in the West today means to subvert the predominantly negative view of shadow in the Western psyche, to transcend the faintly racist notion of shadow theatre as the quaint practice of traditional people of the East and to contend with the dominant influences of the electronic media on this once powerful and popular art form. This research is through creative practice in the form of the production, Cactus. This performance investigates the use of the screen in contemporary Shadow Theatre and the optimisation of the live theatrical experience. The performance also seeks to integrate mediatized and non-mediatized performance through the combination of live performance and projected images. My research is a social constructivist process to creative practice as research using a pluralistic approach including elements of action research and autobiography. The literature included for review in this study includes work by Brook, Grotowski, Auslander, Sontag, and Schechner. The literature analysis and previous training with Italian company, Teatro Gioco Vita, served to inform the application of my theories as praxis. The central question of this research project is: How can I break the fifth wall (which is the screen) in shadow theatre performance? Subsidiary questions are: How can we harness the advantages of both mediatized and non-mediatized performance to produce a contemporary shadow theatre form catering to the needs of a twenty-first century audience? How can I optimize the live theatrical experience? What is contemporary Shadow Theatre?

Electronic-based sedentary behaviour among children within the family home environment : a descriptive study

Granich, Joanna January 2009 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] This descriptive study identified correlates of electronic media use among pre-adolescent children (10-12 year olds). It specifically focused on the potential influence of individual factors and the social and physical environment within the family home setting. The prevalence of overweight/obesity in children is escalating. Sedentary behaviour in the form of electronic media use (comprised of television (TV) and video/DVD viewing, video and computer gaming, and computer use) is a contributing and a modifiable risk factor for overweight/obesity. To date, research focused on sedentary behaviour has been largely derived from physical (in)activity data where the absence or observed low levels of physical activity participation or TV viewing only has been used as a proxy for sedentariness. Little is known about the specificities of children's electronic media use; its impact on children's overall leisure and screen-time; and, the potential influencing factors that may operate at the home level. The family home is a context-specific setting where electronic media use is a daily practice for most children. To better understand electronic-based sedentary behaviour among children the following specific aims were addressed; 1) To describe children's leisure time, particularly time spent with electronic media. 2) To explore children and parents' perceptions about electronic-based sedentary behaviour. 3) To determine the prevalence of children's electronic-media use at home. 4) To examine the influence of individual, family social and home physical factors associated with different levels of electronic media use by children. ... The availability and accessibility of a variety of electronic equipment at home, especially in the child's bedroom (particularly among boys), was also associated with children's screen behaviour. Physical aspects of the family home (i.e., lay-out and yard size) had a mixed effect on children's electronic media use. Overall, the nature of electronic media use among children is complex and is influenced by dimensions that present at children's individual, family social and physical home level. The knowledge generated from this study about specific correlates of electronic media use has extended the understanding about its impact on children's discretionary time. Future prospective longitudinal research is warranted given that most studies investigating electronic media and sedentary behaviour are of cross-sectional design. Including other forms of sedentary behaviour such as sitting and talking with friends and family, reading and/or using telephones may provide a more comprehensive measure of sedentariness in the future. Further studies should use multivariate statistical analyses (i.e., modelling) to improve clarity of relationships between multiple variables and gauge mediating factors. This study also calls for future intervention research. Findings on gender-specific correlates of electronic media use provide superior information for the development of tailored behaviour modification strategies aimed at girls and boys respectively. Active involvement of household members in the intervention is also warranted. Utilising this study's findings may strengthen intervention outcomes towards a more directed and sustained behaviour change

O sistema de certificação digital brasileiro como ferramenta para efetivar o direito fundamental à informação no meio eletrônico

Acioli, Catarine Gonçalves 22 September 2006 (has links)
The use of new technologies in the legal system has caused considerable changes. Information is now more valuable and must be protected by the state legislatures. Such protection becomes necessary because electronic information can be easily accessed, but privacy comes under risk. It became thus necessary to develop new ways to protect the right to information in order to make it safe and reliable. Such is the purpose of the information security systems. The most widely used systems employ electronic signature technology associated to the issue of electronic certificates by reliable third parties. This kind of system has been the most efficient in assuring the integrity and authenticity of the contents and authorship of electronic information. In Brazil, the Brazilian electronic certification system, or ICP-Brasil, is used. It was created by the Provisional Act nº 2.200-2/2001 based on a centralized, hierarchical open model that uses credentials from electronic certificates issuing parties. Those parties, public or private, assure the legitimacy and authorship of electronic information in private legal relations, as in electronic contracts, or in public relations involving the government. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the legislation established by the Brazilian legal system for the activity of electronic certification, with special emphasis to its constitutional aspects, in order to present solutions and assure the security systems offer efficient protection where electronic information is concerned. This critical analysis becomes necessary because it not only contributes to improvements in the model prescribed by the Brazilian government, but it also promotes digital inclusion with quality, which, in turn, will reflect in social benefits for the users. The bibliographical and descriptive research suggest the present electronic security system may start social changes in this effort to improve security of electronic information, although a greater commitment from the state is still necessary in order to encourage the use of electronic media as a general and efficient environment for the exercise of our fundamental rights.

Digitization and its impact on the print media. Case study of selected Czech periodicals.

Bílková, Barbora January 2016 (has links)
This thesis deals with the influence of digitization and electronic media on print media. It shows the progress of development of the digital, its constant growth and transformation of getting public information, especially by particular theories of Marshall McLuhan, Jay David Bolter, Richard Grusin, Alessandro Ludovico and another authors dealing with the issues of media and digitization. The thesis shows a brief media development and the largest part is devoted to the digitization and remediation of the media. The central part is assessing the impact of digitization and the advent of electronic media on print media. It is shown how the print media deal with digitization. In the practical part of my work, it should find out how the print titles of the Czech market are, how are they affected by increasing digitization of media and how they try to deal with this aspect of trying to cope. All of these issues are shown in three cases, the daily newspapers Mladá Fronta DNES, Lidové noviny and Hospodářské noviny, which are the ones of the most important media in Czech republic, which have their printed version, with which they began. With digitization, however, they were forced to start also with their electronic versions. Key words: digitalization, electronic media, mass media, print media, electronic...

Environmental Impacts of Electronic Media : A Comparison of a Magazine’s Tablet and Print Editions

Ahmadi Achachlouei, Mohammad January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to assess potential environmental impacts of electronic media distribution and consumption—from a life cycle perspective—as compared to those of print media. The thesis consists of a cover essay and two papers appended at the end of the thesis. The cover essay summarizes the papers and puts them in context. The main objectives of the thesis are twofold: to assess potential environmental impacts of production and consumption of tablet editions of magazines from a life cycle perspective (Paper I), and to compare potential environmental impacts of a magazine’s print edition with that of its tablet edition (Paper II). The thesis examines the following specific research questions: (1) What are the main environmental impacts of print and tablet editions? (2) Which activities are giving rise to the main environmental impacts of the print and tablet editions? (3) What are the key factors influencing these impacts? (4) What are major data gaps and uncertainties? Based on the present assessment, it is clear that for the print magazine, pulp and paper production is the principal cause of most of the potential environmental impacts. For this reason, the use of recycled paper, rather than virgin fiber, in newsprint production may considerably offset environmental impacts. For the tablet edition, the content production dominates the potential environmental impacts when readers are few. This appears to be the case in an emerging state of the magazine, but with distribution of more media products to smaller groups of people, this may persist for “mature” products as well. As the number of tablet readers grows, more of the environmental impact of the is due to manufacturing of the device and electronic distribution. However, content production may still be a major factor, depending on the specific environmental impacts studied. / <p>QC 20130306</p>
