The responsiveness of the library collection to the information needs of researchers at the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa.

Mthembu, Thabisile Augustine January 2018 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Collection development plays a significant role in the successful achievement of the library’s purpose. The reason for the existence of the library is to meet the information needs of the community it serves. To determine if the PIC is responsive to the information needs of parliamentary researchers, the study used a mixed method of data collection. A survey method in the form of a questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data from parliamentary researchers. Other researchers at Parliament, for example researchers employed by political parties are not part of this study. Qualitative data was collected through interviews with a selection of librarians involved in the PIC collection development process and an evaluation of the Collection Development Policy of the PIC. Four librarians from the PIC were interviewed, and the PIC Collection Development Policy was analysed to triangulate data collected from the questionnaire and interviews. The information needs of parliamentary researchers are triggered by the information needs of parliamentarians, and therefore it is significant that the PIC provide a collection that responds to the information needs of researchers so they can provide relevant information to parliamentarians. The findings indicate that the responsiveness of the library material varies according to the needs of the researchers. The PIC will benefit from a proactive involvement of parliamentary researchers in the collection development process. Customised orientation, proper needs analysis and collection evaluation will improve usage of the library resources and responsiveness of the library material to the clients.

2014. 133f. – Dissertação (Mestrado) – Universidade Federal do Ceará, Programa de Pós-graduação em Políticas Públicas e Gestão da Educação Superior, Fortaleza (CE), 2014. / Submitted by Márcia Araújo (marcia_m_bezerra@yahoo.com.br) on 2014-05-13T14:49:48Z No. of bitstreams: 1 2014_dis_albarrocas.pdf: 3001651 bytes, checksum: a31cb4a57445e6f0875f9d0369b4b0a5 (MD5) / Approved for entry into archive by Márcia Araújo(marcia_m_bezerra@yahoo.com.br) on 2014-05-13T14:52:12Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 2014_dis_albarrocas.pdf: 3001651 bytes, checksum: a31cb4a57445e6f0875f9d0369b4b0a5 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-13T14:52:12Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 2014_dis_albarrocas.pdf: 3001651 bytes, checksum: a31cb4a57445e6f0875f9d0369b4b0a5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014 / The twenty-first century came under the great impact of the media revolution and the new electronic and digital information technologies, which led to the introduction of different means of communication, especially in academia, which facilitated the production of and access to information. Since 2009, the Federal University of Ceará had the policy to purchase eBook titles as need to insert academia into this new model of teaching and research practices. Thus, its main University Library has acquired a collection of electronics books on various fields, available to all university community, as an alternative source of information for research, teaching and community services. Observing this fact and knowing the need to evaluate products and services for libraries, this research proposes the following problem: What factors are considered decisive for the use of electronic books, available on the UFC´s library system for graduate students and Professors in all graduate programs? The research methodology works with quantitative and qualitative data, collected through electronic questionnaires, developed and applied through google docs tool. This will allow us to translate the answers into numbers and information, in order to organize them and to facilitate the analysis and suggestions for this new knowledge. This is an exploratory survey with a random sample, with no final conclusive arguments. The method of data analysis is the functionalist, accomplished through study of selected cases showing relevance to the research. To tabulate the data, we used the Microsoft Excel program. As a result, it was observed that teachers have demonstrated more knowledge on the existence of the collection of electronic books purchased and available by UFC than the students. In contrast, students demonstrated knowing more strategies of access than the teachers. As to the importance and satisfaction with this type of collection, students have a better knowledge on the electronic library than teachers. Even being unaware of this collection, students consider it very important. Teachers who don´t know the existence of this type of collection consider it more important than teachers who know it. To the degree of satisfaction, teachers demonstrated to be more satisfied than the students with the eBook collection. It was evident that the factors that contributed to the use of eBooks were: its gratuity at UFC portal, its wide availability and practicality. The factors that contributed to the failure of the use of this feature are: lack of motivation, information not included in the basic bibliographies, lack of a more significant disclosure, need for a tool to access it, and finally, resistance to change, once the public not want to change the pleasure of leafing a printed book to a virtual one.

Rybníčková, Andrea January 2011 (has links)
Interactive Electronic Books - Traditional Medium in a New Form Diploma thesis "Interactive Electronic Books - Traditional Medium in a New Form" deals with very current form of printed books. It's another step for an electronic book, which has distinct differences in the possible participation in the creation of such media. My thesis defines the terms of electronic books, digital books, and interactive electronic books. It briefly describes the history and development of the book into its interactive form. An important part of this work is the development and history of the Internet, which is inseparable from the development of electronic books. Thanks to the Internet electronic books are available to all users; the development in this area wouldn't be so fast without its existence. The main part of the thesis was a qualitative analysis (the method of depth interviews) which examines young people's interest in interactive electronic books and their opinion about its potential in the future. The main part of the depth interviews was an evaluation of different forms of various genres of electronic books and their possibilities. The conclusion is about the prognosis of interactive electronic books from various points of views.

Comparing the Readability of Text Displays on Paper, E-Book Readers, and Small Screen Devices

Baker, Rebecca Dawn 05 1900 (has links)
Science fiction has long promised the digitalization of books. Characters in films and television routinely check their palm-sized (or smaller) electronic displays for fast-scrolling information. However, this very technology, increasingly prevalent in today's world, has not been embraced universally. While the convenience of pocket-sized information pieces has the techno-savvy entranced, the general public still greets the advent of the e-book with a curious reluctance. This lack of enthusiasm seems strange in the face of the many advantages offered by the new medium - vastly superior storage capacity, searchability, portability, lower cost, and instantaneous access. This dissertation addresses the need for research examining the reading comprehension and the role emotional response plays in the perceived performance on e-document formats as compared to traditional paper format. This study compares the relative reading comprehension on three formats (Kindle, iTouch, and paper) and examines the relationship of subject's emotional response and relative technology exposure as factors that affect how the subject perceives they have performed on those formats. This study demonstrates that, for basic reading comprehension, the medium does not matter. Furthermore, it shows that, the more uncomfortable a person is with technology and expertise in the requested task (in this case, reading), the more they cling to the belief that they will do better on traditional (paper) media - regardless of how well they actually do.

Brokevičius, Vydmintas 13 August 2010 (has links)
Sukurta elektroninių knygų turinio valdymo sistemą leis vartotojui greitai pasiekti reikalingus informacinius resursus, be papildomų programavimo įgūdžių įkelti naują knygą, koreguoti, atnaujinti ir šalinti sukurtą elektroninę knygą. Patalpinta elektroninės knygos informacija bus apsaugota nuo galimų plagijavimo atvejų, paprastas vartotojas negalės nukopijuoti sistemoje esančios knygos turinio. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The various projects in schools, the rapidly increasing number of computers and other modern technologies. Currently, schools lack modern digital tools and attractive digital learning (teaching) materials, which is in line with current realities. One of the ways of learning material is a global Web access. Although the World Wide Web tools have a few shortcomings, but for now it is one of the most effective means of developing educational (learning) material. This technology allows us to provide educational materials very vividly, adding graphics, images, audio and video clips. Hierarchical alignment, fork, and the possibility to search by keyword is the quickest way to find the required training (learning) material. The world of electronic books popularity is growing rapidly in comparison to printed books. The reason is that electronic books have a lot useful features. Learning, studying and collecting information, search in online book, faster and easier job. E-Book can be reached at any time of day, stay in any country, just need to have Internet connection. As well as the e-books and other electronic sources is the main problem of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes plagiarism, copying, data manipulation, and others. The main reasons of academic dishonesty is the distance training, the number of student growth and of student groups growth and so on. LiquidText: supporting active reading through flexible document representations

Tashman, Craig Stuart 03 April 2012 (has links)
Knowledge workers are frequently called upon to perform deep, critical reading involving a heightened level of interaction with the reading media and other tools. This process, known as active reading, entails highlighting, commenting upon, and flipping through a text, in addition to other actions. While paper is traditionally seen as the ideal medium for active reading, computers have recently become comparable to paper through replicating the latter’s affordances. But even paper is not a panacea; it offers an inflexible document representation that supports some things well, such as embellishment, but supports others very poorly, like comparison and large scale annotation. In response to this, I developed a prototype system, called LiquidText, to embody a flexible, high degree-of-freedom visual representation that seeks to alleviate some of the problems in paper and paper-like representations. To provide efficient control of this representation, LiquidText runs on a multi-finger touch and gesture based platform. To guide the development of this system, I conducted a formative study of current active reading practice. I investigated knowledge workers’ active reading habits, perceptions, and the problems they face with current reading media. I also inquired into what they would like in a future active reading environment. I used these results in conjunction with multiple design iterations and formative system evaluations to refine LiquidText for use in a summative study. The summative study assessed, through a controlled, laboratory evaluation, LiquidText’s impact on 1) the subjective experience of active reading, 2) the process of active reading, and 3) the outputs resulting from active reading. Generally, the study found a strong participant preference for LiquidText, and a focus on the creation of a summary of the original document as part of the reading process. On average, reading outputs were not significantly better or worse with LiquidText, but some conditions were observed that may help identify the subset of people for whom LiquidText will result in an improvement.

Moraes, Andre Carlos January 2012 (has links)
With the purpose of contributing with empirical data in the discussions about the elec-tronic book and the future of the book, this research sought to understand and analyze the ways in which students who joined the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 2011 took hold of the contents of the admission exam‟s 12 titles mandatory reading list. The starting conceptual model was Roger Chartier‟s The Order of Books (1998), being applied the concept of admission exam‟s lists as canonical form developed by Ana Cláudia Fidélis (2008). The Dissertation‟s methodological planning followed the model of Research in Communication from Maria Imma-colata Vasallo de Lopes (2003). The sample corpus was chosen taking into account quantitative data from pre-existing reading survey Portraits of Reading in Brazil (2008). The observation included 263 first year students from nine courses of the University, one from each major area of Capes. They responded to a self applied closed questionnaire. The form included questions about the amount of mandatory books read in full or in part, as well as the reading apparatus adopted. Downloads quantities and number of titles read in electronic form were also investi-gated. Descriptive categories came from theoretical reference authors such as John b. Thompson (2008), Ted Striphas (2011) and José Afonso Furtado (2006). The analysis of quantitative data from the survey was conducted by qualitative analysis. In lesser extent the empirical work em-ployed qualitative techniques with triangulation intent, merging telephone interviews and direct observation. The analysis of the results pointed out that there was a predominance of reading on printed book, support chosen by 90% of the respondents. The electronic book was consulted or read by just over 30% of candidates surveyed. This minority group was divided into two main subsets: those who sought the digital medium as an easier access to the mandatory titles and those that employed electronic medium as support to study in conjunction with printed media. It was also noted that the public domain distribution had a tendency to determine the titles more read in electronic form. It was observed, still, that there was a wide variety of reading settings, both around individual profiles and by subject area. Collaterally, it was noted that candidates of more competitive courses had the tendency to read more recommended list titles, with preva-lence of the printed form.

Lemos, Greta January 2014 (has links)
The research has as a main purpose to verify how Brazilian magazines as Superinter-essante, piauí, Nova Escola, Info Exame e Você S/A describe e-books, considering its char-acteristic features and its values on the journalistic field. The methodological procedures used were bibliographic and documentary research as well as content analysis. We re-viewed 58 magazines that constitute the research corpus (the entire publications of 2013) and found 34 texts that contained information about e-books. After a quantitative and qual-itative analysis of these texts we point out five main results: 1) The targeted magazines influence on the release of information about e-books is restricted; 2) The magazines have no interest in educating/encouraging the reader on how to acquire an e-book; 3) The sub-ject “e-book” is not worthy of a highlighted piece in the journal where it’s exposed; 4) The texts underline a reconfiguration of the actor’s role in the book chain.

ABSTRACT The use of e-book and mediation of information on Health University Library of UFBA constitute the theme of this dissertation, which had the intention to verify the availability of electronic books to graduate students community healthcare UFBA has resulted in use effective this material.
