Electronic Books: An Overview of the First Two Generations.

The electronic text reading device, or e-book, is an idea that has reached the implementation stage. Technology has only recently made possible the production of a device to challenge the printed book’s dominance as the media for information transmission. These microprocessor-based devices are attempts to exceed the limitations of printed texts while retaining their strengths. Two generations of these devices, and the companies that created them, have reached the marketplace. This thesis provides a short history of electronic text readers and gives an overview of the first and second generations. The issues that will affect the adoption of the e-book as the dominant media for the transmission of texts are discussed. The primary objections to the e-book’s replacement of the book are durability, ease of use and clarity. With these concerns addressed by improvement of the underlying technology, the e-book will replace the majority of the printed books in the marketplace.

Esta pesquisa observa, em três levantamentos ao longo de seis anos, as táticas de leitura e estudo de estudantes de primeiro ano da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), com ênfase em sua apropriação dos títulos da lista de leituras recomendadas para a prova de Literatura do vestibular. Tem como objetivo compreen-der a dinâmica de alternância de plataformas para apropriação de conteúdo por parte dos leitores, investigando as práticas socioculturais ligadas ao livro e outros suportes paralelos, em uma perspectiva que se estabelece a partir do campo da Comunicação. Integrada à linha de pesquisa Mediações e Representações Culturais e Políticas, a tese problematiza resultados da dissertação de mestrado do autor, que havia realizado le-vantamento em 2011, com 263 alunos, prospectando usos de suportes paralelos ao livro. Foram realizadas rodadas adicionais de pesquisa em 2014, com 269 estudantes; e 2016, com 135, totalizando 667 alunos de 11 cursos, que responderam a um questio-nário autopreenchido distribuído em sala de aula; e 31 entrevistas semiestruturadas telefônicas, para triangulação. Como referências teóricas, empregam-se conceitos de Ted Striphas (2011), Henry Jenkins (2008), John B. Thompson (2008; 2012), Roger Char-tier (1998; 2001), Robert Darnton (2009) e Thomas Bredehoft (2014), entre outros au-tores. Metodologicamente, adota-se o modelo de instâncias de Maria Immacolata Vas-sallo de Lopes (2003). Entre os resultados, observa-se um aumento progressivo da su-perposição de suportes por parte dos estudantes amostrados ao longo dos três perío-dos, paralelo a um deslocamento em direção à variedade de suportes dentro das pró-prias listas de vestibular da UFRGS (que a tese analisa desde sua criação, em 1999, até o concurso de 2017). A análise de dados quantitativos e dos acertos da turma de 2014 aponta que a variedade de suportes empregada pelos alunos não foi determinante para o escore nas provas, embora possa ser indicativa de preferências individuais e, mesmo, coletivas. Após a análise categorial das entrevistas semiestruturadas, propõe-se a hipótese de que os alunos manipulam ativamente a dimensão dos suportes de conteúdo, construindo canais de comunicação personalizados e às vezes únicos, a par-tir de uma conjugação de conveniência pessoal, gosto e, também, efeitos de represen-tação indicativos de pressão coercitiva herdada da cultura do livro. / This research observes, in three surveys over six years, the reading and study tactics of first year students of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), with emphasis on their appropriation of the titles of the recommended readings list for the Literature test of the entrance examination. Its objective is to understand the dy-namics of the alternation of platforms for the appropriation of content by the readers, investigating the sociocultural practices associated with the book and other parallel supports, in a perspective that is established from the field of Communication. Examining the efficacy of using iPod Touches to deliver reading comprehension strategy instruction and to provide electronic text support on the reading comprehension performance of sixth-grade students

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Instructional use of the iPod Touch is increasing as evidenced by anecdotal reports of its efficacy as a learning tool. However, research documenting the impact of this technology has been limited. This study was based on the following research questions: (a) Does providing explicit reading comprehension strategy instruction using an iPod Touch increase students' reading comprehension outcomes based on standardized reading tests and multiple-choice probe measures when compared to a No Support comparison group? (b) Does providing different types of electronic text support increase students' reading comprehension outcomes, and if so, which type of support is most effective? (c) Does providing different levels of electronic text support influence students' attitudes toward the use of comprehension strategies as well as using an iPod Touch for this task? Participants included 155 sixth-grade students at a public middle school. Students were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups; (a) Notational Only support (a note-taking sheet), (b) Notational + Instructional support (embedded prompts), and (c) Notational + Instructional + Translational support (audio version of the text and prompts) and received reading comprehension strategy instruction and text support using an iPod Touch. An intact No Support ( N = 61) group that did not receive instruction or text support but read the texts using an iPod Touch was used as a quasi-experimental comparison group. Two standardized reading comprehension measures were employed at pretest and posttest as well as researcher developed probe measures that were used throughout the study. An ANOVA analysis determined that no statistically significant differences existed between the groups at pretest. An ANCOVA with pretest scores as a covariate found no statistically significant differences between groups on the standardized reading comprehension measures. Because of a high level of variation among the probe measure data, including significant missing data, these results were not analyzed statistically and were reported descriptively. Students responded positively to survey questions about using the iPod Touch for summarization strategy instruction and the text supports. / Committee in Charge: Dr. Edward J. Hypermedia for Language Learning))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The ancient Roman poet Vergil’s great literary epic, the Aeneid, is written in Latin. This so-called “dead” language is already almost three thousand years old and had a rich history and extensive influence on the Western world. The most influential development of the modern era is the World Wide Web (WWW). Hypertext drives the Web. The translation of just one book of the Aeneid can be a protracted process for the Latin student. Usually a great deal of information must be consulted to translate just one line into idiomatic Afrikaans or English. Hypertext can manage, link and rapidly make available large amounts of information. A discussion of Aeneidos Electronicum (“The Electronic Aeneid”) – a web-based electronic text commentary of Book I of the epic – shows the effectiveness of hypertext as a medium to facilitate the translation of the Aeneid. Moreover an examination of the Web determines the extent and nature of Vergil’s presence on it. Finally a critical evaluation of five websites provides an overview of the available resources for the reader/researcher of the classical poet and his works on the Web. The Aeneidos Electronicum-project attempts to show how hypertext can be utilised to make the translation of the Aeneid expeditious and translation aid more accessible. The aim of the project is to support and expand Vergil’s place in the field of computer assisted language learning. The examination and evaluation of the classical poet’s presence on the Web wishes to confirm that his and his works’ enduring influence and impact not only exists on paper, but also in cyberspace. Chapter 2 deals with Latin and Vergil respectively. Chapter 3 discusses the theory of good hypertext and web design. Chapter 4 describes and explains the contents, structure, navigation and design of the Aeneidos Electronicum-project. Chapter 5 examines Vergil’s presence on the Web and critically evaluates five websites according to the principles of good web design. Aeneidos Electronicum utilises hypertext’s ability to manage and link large amounts of information to produce an electronic text commentary of Book I of Vergil’s Aeneid. It is web-based and follows the guidelines of good hypertext and web design to be a userfriendly and extremely functional electronic translation aid. Similar websites exist, but its object is to make Latin students’ experience of Vergil and his great epic easy, informative and enriching. Vergil’s presence on the Web is considerable and there is a wide variety of websites with information and interactivity for study of the classical poet and his works available to the student/teacher/researcher as well as the lay person. The random sample of five websites shows not only the application of good and less effective web design principles, but also the predominantly good quality and importance of the presentations. Thus Vergil and his works gain further ground in computer assisted language learning and he lives on in the 21st century with all the possibilities that the Web and hypertext can offer. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die antieke Romeinse digter Vergilius se grootse literêre epos, die Aeneïs, is in Latyn geskryf. Dié sogenaamde “dooie” taal is al ongeveer drieduisend jaar oud en het ’n ryke geskiedenis en omvattende invloed op die Westerse wêreld gehad. Die invloedrykste tegnologiese ontwikkeling van die moderne era is die Wêreldwye Web (WWW). Hiperteks dryf die Web. Die vertaling van net een boek van die Aeneïs kan ’n langdurige proses vir die Latyn-student wees. ’n Magdom inligting moet gewoonlik geraadpleeg word om net een reël in idiomatiese Afrikaans of Engels te vertaal. Hiperteks kan groot hoeveelhede inligting hanteer, verbind en vinnig beskikbaar stel. ’n Bespreking van Aeneidos Electronicum (“Die Elektroniese Aeneïs”) – ’n webgebaseerde elektroniese tekskommentaar van Boek I van die epos – toon die effektiwiteit van hiperteks as ’n medium om die vertaling van die Aeneïs te vergemaklik. Le livre sous la loupe : Nouvelles formes d’écriture électronique

Les fichiers qui accompagnent le document incluent une archive .jar du zoom-éditeur (qui peut être lancé via un browser) et des exemples de z-textes réalisés avec ce logiciel. / L’objectif du projet est la construction d’un nouveau type d’éditeur, appelé ici zoom-éditeur, permettant à l’utilisateur d’augmenter ou de diminuer le degré de détail du texte par des opérations de zoom-in et zoom-out. La principale caractéristique de cette nouvelle forme de textualité sera l’organisation du texte sous la forme d’une structure spatiale à trois dimensions (X, Y, Z), c’est-à-dire une disposition intégrant des niveaux de « profondeur » correspondant à différents degrés de détail et de signification. Nous avons appelé ce type de texte, représentable à plusieurs échelles, z-texte et les processus de création et d’exploration impliqués par cette structure, z-écriture et z-lecture. La première partie décrira le cadre et les enjeux théoriques du projet. Les deux premiers chapitres seront dédiés à la dialectique code / texte et aux méthodes d’analyse de l’esthétique du texte électronique, dans une perspective comparatiste par rapport aux formes textuelles imprimées. Le troisième chapitre présentera l’analyse de cinq types d’ouvrages sur support électronique, parmi les plus connus (hypertexte littéraire, cyberpoésie, blog, encyclopédie libre et journal en ligne). La deuxième partie décrira les sources du modèle proposé, le modèle proprement dit, ainsi que les composantes et la fonctionnalité du zoom-éditeur. Ce volet se réfèrera au cadre théorique décrit dans les trois premiers chapitres. La troisième partie proposera quelques hypothèses sur les applications possibles du modèle, à partir de l’idée de z-texte comme espace multidimensionnel. Le projet inclura également la construction des z-textes, selon les principes de la z-écriture et en utilisant le zoom-éditeur. / The project proposes a new type of interface, that we have called zoom-editor, allowing the user to increase and decrease the degree of detail of the text by zooming-in and out. The main feature of this new kind of textuality would be a 3D textual layout on the three axis (X, Y, Z), i.e. an in-depth structure based on several layers of details and meaning. We have called this type of text, z-text, and the corresponding processes of reading and writing, z-reading and z-writing. The first part describes the theoretical framework of the project. The first two chapters deal with the code/text dialectics and the analytic methods of the electronic text aesthetics, as compared with the printed forms. The third chapter analyses five types of digital documents: literary hypertext, cyberpoetry, blog, free encyclopaedia and on line newspaper. The second part describes the sources of the proposed model, the model itself, and the components and functionality of zoom-editor. This section also contains references and discussions related to the theoretical framework portrayed in the first three chapters. The third part proposes some hypotheses on the possible applications of the model, starting from the idea of a z-text as a multidimensional space. Each dimension would metaphorically correspond to a type of magnifying glass, implying a certain kind of analysis or exploration of a text. The domains considered for discussion are literary criticism, creative writing, pedagogy, encyclopaedias and dictionaries, documentation. The project also supposes the construction of a number of z-texts, according to the principles of z-writing, by using the zoom-editor.

L’objectif du projet est la construction d’un nouveau type d’éditeur, appelé ici zoom-éditeur, permettant à l’utilisateur d’augmenter ou de diminuer le degré de détail du texte par des opérations de zoom-in et zoom-out. La principale caractéristique de cette nouvelle forme de textualité sera l’organisation du texte sous la forme d’une structure spatiale à trois dimensions (X, Y, Z), c’est-à-dire une disposition intégrant des niveaux de « profondeur » correspondant à différents degrés de détail et de signification. Nous avons appelé ce type de texte, représentable à plusieurs échelles, z-texte et les processus de création et d’exploration impliqués par cette structure, z-écriture et z-lecture. La première partie décrira le cadre et les enjeux théoriques du projet. Les deux premiers chapitres seront dédiés à la dialectique code / texte et aux méthodes d’analyse de l’esthétique du texte électronique, dans une perspective comparatiste par rapport aux formes textuelles imprimées. Le troisième chapitre présentera l’analyse de cinq types d’ouvrages sur support électronique, parmi les plus connus (hypertexte littéraire, cyberpoésie, blog, encyclopédie libre et journal en ligne). La deuxième partie décrira les sources du modèle proposé, le modèle proprement dit, ainsi que les composantes et la fonctionnalité du zoom-éditeur.
