The Elementary School Library and How It Functions in IndianaFullenwider, Helen Estelle 01 January 1938 (has links)
The elementary school library is still in the pioneer stage of development in the schools of Indiana. In truth, there are few elementary school libraries in the state in the correct definition of the words. Nevertheless some type of library service, although inadequate, is available to every school and pupil in the state. It is the purpose of this study to review the history of library service to children and to ascertain what the present types of library service to children are, and to give some information relative to the library programs that are followed by certain elementary schools in the state which employ a librarian or teacher librarian to administer the library.

To Determine the Extent to Which the Denton County Library is Meeting the Recreational Reading Interests of the Elementary Pupils of the Rural Schools of Denton County, TexasLambert, Benjamin Carter 08 1900 (has links)
"In order to determine the extent to which the Denton County Free Library is meeting the needs of the elementary school children for recreational reading, an analysis was made of the reading interests of the elementary-school children of twelve common school districts of Denton County, Texas. The ages of these children ranged from nine to fourteen years. A second analysis was made by checking various acceptable authors in the field of children's reading interests as read by the children in this group and age level. This information was secured by having each child in the schools check the items listed in a school survey sheet. This information was tabulated and the results are shown in tables presented in Chapter III. A third analysis was made of library material found in the reading lists that were supplied by the county; and lastly, a comparison was made of the results of the last analysis with the two preceding ones." -- leaf 3

The purpose of this study, in addition to measuring and comparing attitudes of teachers, principals and library media specialists toward the role of the school library media specialist, was to identify and measure factors contributing to those attitudes. Nine factors were identified. Further path analysis revealed that the performance level of the library media specialist had the most influence on principals' and teachers' attitudes toward the Consultant, Technological and Instructional Roles. For principals and teachers, staff development had the most influence on attitudes toward the Management Role, while involvement in the school-wide program was most influential for library media specialists.

Public libraries or libraries in elementary schools should coordinate the tasks and functions to change the management styles. The cooperation between schools and libraries could have reading habits being cultivated from childhood and allow students enhancing the reading intention in the reading atmosphere. The cooperation between public libraries and libraries in elementary schools is expected as a wonderful start, allowing reading and media information literary sustainably being rooted from elementary schools and every child becoming a learner in future era.
This study aims to discuss the cooperation examples between public libraries and libraries in elementary schools in foreign countries, domestic cooperation model between public libraries and libraries in elementary schools, and present cooperation situation of library resources between public libraries and libraries in elementary schools in Hsin Chu City. With literature review and semi-structured interviews, the public librarians and the teacher librarians in elementary schools in Hsin Chu City are selected as the research participants. The data analyses are concluded as below.
1. The cooperation between public libraries and libraries in elementary schools in foreign countries is rich. Professional librarians and complete reading education policies are established in the libraries. Such a cooperative scheme could benefit the management of school libraries and the promotion of reading education and enhance the library use.
2. Domestic cooperation model between public libraries and libraries in elementary schools focuses more on library card services and reading promotion, which not only provide library resources, but also combine local culture for characteristic activities.
3. Budget support, lack of professional librarians, and supports of relevant personnel are the major factors in little cooperative interaction of library resources between public libraries and libraries in elementary schools in Hsin Chu City.
According to the research results, the following suggestions are proposed. 1. The central government should promote long-term projects to increase formal personnel for public libraries, establish a teacher librarian for the library in each elementary school, arrange libraries of district offices by the country/city culture bureau, and establish county/city librarian associations. 2. Local government should integrate the resources in various sectors and stress on the management of public libraries. 3. Public libraries should reinforce media promotion, actively cooperate with municipal elementary schools, and construct cooperation teams. 4. Elementary schools should actively strive for resources in public libraries, establish library organizing committees on campus, and provide teachers and students with required resources and supports.
Key words: public library﹔elementary school libraries﹔teacher librarian ﹔Interlibrary Cooperation.

The literacy environment in support of voluntary reading: a case study in Gauteng East and the Highveld Ridge areaTiemensma, Leoné 30 November 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the literacy environment at home, at school and in the community and the development of voluntary reading and thus a reading habit.
This research is relevant as there is an alarming drop out rate, poor matriculation results and low scores in reading performance tests in South African schools. Many factors and possible causes can contribute to this, but a major problem is the lack of a reading habit, low literacy levels and an environment that is not supportive of literacy. As a result, many children are still leaving school functionally illiterate.
In order to develop a reading habit, learners must get maximum support and encouragement from their literacy environment, as children learn from what is going on around them. The major role players in the learner's literacy environment, are the home and family (microstructure), the school and teachers, and his community which includes libraries (macrostructure).
A literature study on the foundations, contexts and practices of literacy, voluntary reading and environmental factors that affect reading provides the theoretical basis and a conceptual framework for this study. The research method used is a case study with the focus on a sample of learners from Grade 3 - 7 from schools in the Highveld Ridge and Gauteng East area. Due to budgetary and logistical constraints, rural areas are not included. The empirical survey investigates various aspects of the literacy environment. The survey method, with questionnaires for learners, teachers and headmasters, was used. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used to generate data.
The findings are that many learners experience difficulties which hinder the development of a reading habit, for example: schools and communities do not have libraries, or access to them is limited; appropriate reading materials are not available; or learners do not have access to them; multilingualism is a major problem in a country with eleven official languages, as many learners have to learn and teachers have to teach in a language other than their mother tongue; parents are not literate and cannot help their children; socio-economic conditions are not conductive to reading; there is a lack of support from governmental at various levels.
Although findings in a case study cannot be generalised, certain conclusions and suggestions can guide teachers, parents and librarians to create a more supportive literacy environment to encourage voluntary reading. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science)

The Effects of Visits by Authors of Children's Books in Selected Elementary SchoolsStaas, Gretchen L. (Gretchen Lee) 05 1900 (has links)
Guest author visits are popular events in schools across the United States. Little has been written, however, on a single author doing a single presentation in a school. This study addressed that situation. The study utilized two authors visiting four schools in a large North Central Texas school district.
