Stigma Resistance: Exploring the Experiences of Young People at Risk for Psychosis Through Photo Elicitation

The discovery that it is possible to identify an individual before the onset of first episode psychosis and that treatment may prevent or delay onset have led to a proliferation of early intervention clinics designed to intervene before symptoms of psychosis have fully appeared. Early intervention has generated considerable debate, given the risks associated with intervening and that the majority of those identified will never develop full-blown psychosis. Despite potential stigmatizing effects, little is known about young people’s views regarding the favourable and/or adverse consequences of early intervention. This research examines the experiences and meaning of illness in young people identified as being at ultra high risk for psychosis and participating in a psychological intervention program. Specifically, the study uses photo elicitation to explore how participants construct and interpret their experiences, and the impact an at risk label has on their sense of self, identity, and social relationships. Five young people were invited to photograph their daily experiences at home, at school, and in the community. The participants and I then analyzed the photographs together in a photo elicitation interview. I further analyzed the visual and textual data from an interactionist perspective, exploring the concept of stigma and its relationship to young people’s experiences. Visual and narrative data revealed that young people reject their at risk status and redefine their experiences to fit with more acceptable and familiar notions of health. Participants are conscious of the stigma associated with psychosis and actively undertake strategies of resistance to avoid stigmatization and uphold a normal self conception and social impression. Photo elicitation provided insight and understanding into the experiences of young people at risk for psychosis that were not available through more traditional methods. The results from this study support the call for a reconsideration of the psychosis risk paradigm. There is a need to increase awareness about the power of diagnostic information and the labeling process. Non-specialized settings such as schools and community health centres may offer more appropriate environments for mental health monitoring and intervention.

In this thesis, eliciting system functional requirements based on business requirements during software intensive systems acquisition or development process is investigated and an approach is proposed for this purpose. Concepts and current problems within the framework of business requirements are investigated with a general literature review of requirements engineering and technology acquisition. Determination of requirements of IT system to be acquired according to the business objectives and base lining business processes is dealt with business process modeling. ARIS providing integrated and complete information system architecture along with modeling techniques and modeling tool is also investigated. Proposed approach recommends EEPC as process modeling technique and ARIS software as supporting toolset, and explains how to conduct application of automatic requirements eliciting from business process models, by extending a reporting script provided by ARIS software. Proposed approach was partially applied to the real project and the obtained results were presented in this thesis.

“This is me. I like who I am”: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Using Photo Elicitation to Examine the World of the School-­Age Child With Cystic Fibrosis

School-age children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) possess valuable knowledge about themselves. They have experience and ability to offer insight about living with CF. Previous studies, exploring the perceptions of CF children, give little attention to eliciting and listening to their voices. Also, traditional data collection methods limit children from participating in research. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe how school-age children with CF see themselves in the world they live. The study utilized qualitative description methodology. Symbolic Interactionism served as the researcher’s philosophical lens. It is a perspective that seeks to understand the social world of others, as they perceive it. Photo elicitation was used as the primary data collection method. Each participant was asked to take photographs about “What it is like to be you”. Photographs were then used to stimulate and guide an audio-recorded interview and make a photo book for the child to keep. Data were analyzed using Boyatzis method of inductive thematic content analysis. Sixteen children with CF between the ages of 8 to 11 were purposively recruited from the Southeastern United States. Data saturation was achieved after 13 interviews. Rigor was maintained by a variety of ways including bracketing, peer evaluation, and member checking. Five themes emerged from the data Me Being Me, My Medicine and Treatments, My Family, My Friends and Other Key Relationships, and My World. Findings revealed that life does not revolve around CF, but instead centers on “me being me” and living a normal life. Additionally, photo elicitation empowered participants to be authors of their own stories, and promoted communication between them and the researcher. In knowing the reality of children, nurses and other multidisciplinary CF team members are better equipped to design and plan interventions that are meaningful, beneficial, and satisfying to the child and his or her parent. The results of this study demonstrate children can be active participants in research and provides opportunities to transform nursing care by developing and evaluating strategies for the delivery of care to children with CF. Recommendations for future research include expanding this study to other CF centers and including the perceptions of parents, nurses, and other CF health care providers. Additionally, because perceptions a person holds about them selves and the world change overtime, a follow-up study when participants reach adolescence and adulthood is suggested.

Spatial modelling for the conservation of threatened species: distributions, habitats and landscape connectivity of the brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata).

Ecological patterns and processes influence ecosystem function at scales from nanometres to global scales depending on the organisms involved. Predicting the presence and abundance of species, at scales appropriate to the organisms and the underlying processes, is central to ecology. Models of species’ distributions can provide important insights into pattern-process-scale relationships including the relative importance of various environmental factors and their interactions that influence habitat selection at the individual and population levels. Mapping current and potential distributions informs the conservation of threatened species by providing spatial information on where a species is likely to occur and the identification of habitat elements and their spatial configurations which influence occupancy and persistence. The aim of this thesis was to incorporate the principles of pattern, process and scale in the identification of habitat associations for threatened species within a species’ distribution modelling framework. Accurate modelling of species’ distributions depends on robust sampling designs, reliable data input and appropriate statistical methodologies that align with the ecological model. I applied a range of innovative statistical methods to various sources of data to identify important habitat associations for a threatened species at different scales and tested the discriminative ability of the resultant models. I integrated the results from extensive field sampling and expert elicitation to build connectivity networks using graph theory algorithms to identify important conservation priorities for threatened species. The threatened brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) was chosen as a suitable study species for quantifying habitat relationships at multiple spatial scales using species’ distribution modelling. The distribution of brush-tailed rock-wallabies is restricted to a set of suitable habitat characteristics related to rocky terrain supporting cliffs and boulder piles that occur infrequently across a landscape. At the site scale, they require suitable resting and refuge sites provided by rocky habitats, while at a landscape scale their dispersal is dependent on the connectivity of suitable habitats. The species is listed as threatened throughout eastern Australia and endangered in some states. Information about its current distribution and occupancy status is essential to support habitat conservation and threat management. The first chapter provides a broad view of the literature on modelling of species’ distributions and the thesis aims and structure. In chapter 2, I assess the ecological scale relevant to habitat modelling for the brush-tailed rock-wallaby. In chapter 3 I test whether habitat models from one region can be extrapolated to neighbouring regions. I use a novel approach and elicitation tool in chapter 4 to collect expert knowledge and assess it with a comprehensive set of field data in a Bayesian framework. In chapter 5 I assess whether landscape connectivity is a determinant of site occupancy by using graph theory algorithms to identify important habitat patches and dispersal pathways for rock-wallaby movement in fragmented landscapes. The final chapter synthesises the individual chapters’ findings within the context of species’ distribution modelling. Management implications are discussed for the conservation of the brush-tailed rock-wallaby and its habitat network. Wider implications are also suggested for other rock-wallaby species and species living in similar environments. The results of the thesis showed the habitat of the brush-tailed rock-wallaby was affected by site-scale and landscape-scale factors, supporting the need for a multi-scale approach when investigating species-environment associations. I found that models performed well within a region at both scales. Extrapolating the models to neighbouring regions resulted in good predictive performance at the site scale but substantially poorer predictive performance at the landscape scale. When there is insufficient field data to build robust data models, management bodies would benefit from incorporating expert knowledge. The study demonstrates the potential errors in using experts with knowledge gained from outside the area of interest. Finally, I highlight the importance of accounting for the landscape connectivity between patches from the perspective of the individual animal. Least cost analysis, using graph theory algorithms, provides a cost-efficient and effective framework for identifying landscape connectivity patterns and key paths and patches to help inform suitable land management strategies for conservation of threatened species. There is much pressure from conservation and management agencies to produce models of species’ distributions that could be potentially be used in other regions or with similar species. The thesis combines ecological theory with rigorous statistical methodology to test different modelling techniques for species distribution modelling. It demonstrates how a combination of expert knowledge, extensive field data and landscape connectivity measures successfully predicts ecological relationships at a number of scales. Species’ distribution models can benefit from applying a robust sampling design and suitable modelling techniques to various data sources to generate ecologically-based information to improve our understanding of species-habitat associations and provide a reliable component to incorporate into conservation planning. This thesis therefore provides important advances to spatial ecology and ecological modelling of species distributions and management of threatened species.

A Photographic Case Study of Navajo Children's Views of Their Education

abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether an alignment exists between the mission of Puente de Hozho Magnet School and the visualization of how current Navajo students view their education at the school. Qualitative research was used as an opportunity to explore the significance and to gain an in-depth understanding of how Navajo students view their education in the context of their personal experiences. The population consisted of six Navajo fifth grade students who lived outside the boundaries of their Indian reservation and attended school at Puente de Hozho Magnet School. The six student participants were asked to respond to the question, "What does your education look like at Puente de Hozho Magnet School?" through the pictures they took with a camera in and around the school. After the pictures were developed, students were individually interviewed by utilizing selected pictures to prompt their memory in eliciting descriptions and meanings of the images they captured. The students' responses generated a data set for coding and analysis, from which a wealth of data yielded prominent themes as to their education at Puente de Hozho Magnet School. Analysis of this research concluded that the students' visualization of their education at Puente de Hozho is aligned with the original mission and vision of the school. The student voices represent a relationship of natural connections to their cultural heritage as experienced in their school by disregarding stereotypes and rising above the expected. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ed.D. An exploration of a beginning undergraduate music student conducting with expressivity

Doctor of Philosophy / Curriculum and Instruction Programs / Frederick Burrack / One of the most important roles of a conductor is to prepare an ensemble to perform, not only accurately but expressively, utilizing physical gestures and facial expressions. For many music students, the development of physical gestures that elicit expressive performance are typically introduced in a beginning undergraduate conducting course. This is important in establishing a framework for understanding the technical aspects of conducting, considering that many beginning student conductors lack a basic comprehension of conducting fundamentals. However, the interpretative and expressive principles of conducting are equally important as basic technique and are often more difficult to teach to undergraduate students. There is an overwhelming amount of gestural skill that should be experienced and explored by a beginning undergraduate conductor. Despite a students’ best efforts in the classroom and in the practice room, expressive conducting skills that represent internal musical intentions remain a primary challenge with novice conducting students. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of a beginning undergraduate conductor as they learned to conduct and develop their considerations and skills of conducting to elicit expression. Through case study, exploring the experiences of an undergraduate music student enrolled in a beginning conducting course from a Midwestern university exposed valuable information that could become helpful when designing instruction. The findings addressed the research questions of the study and revealed additional aspects of the learning experience from the perspective of the participant. Through reflection, navigation of self, guided video elicitation, discussion of expressive conducting, and acknowledgement of prior musical expectations and intent, the participant discovered the differences between their perceived expressive gestures and the realization of an audible response from an ensemble.

A Study of Elicitation Techniques in Market-Driven Requirements Engineering

Context. Compare with bespoke RE, market-driven requirements engineering (MDRE), has manyclassical requirements engineering activities of bespoke RE. Elicitation is one of these activities. Thisprocess is to capture, extract and obtain needs from stakeholders. And there are many techniques toguide MDRE elicitation, and some techniques for bespoke RE are also used in MDRE contextnowadays. However, not all of these techniques are suitable for MDRE due to the difference betweenMDRE and bespoke RE, for example, in MDRE context, there is no specific customers’ participation.Meanwhile, there is a lack of studies that compare elicitation techniques by evaluating theircompetence of mitigating MDRE challenges. Objectives. In this study, we investigate and collect techniques which can be used for MDREelicitation. We also identify challenges of MDRE elicitation practice from literature as evaluatingcriteria. Then, we evaluate elicitation techniques’ competence of mitigating these challenges. Finally,we discuss with some interviewees to validate our result with real-world MDRE context. Methods. We use literature review and snowball sampling to investigate and collect MDRE elicitationtechniques and challenges. Next, we summarize elicitation techniques’ advantages and limitationsfrom literature and compare these techniques by evaluating whether they can mitigate MDREchallenges we find. Next, we conduct interview with 8 interviewees who are practitioners or havedeveloping experience in order to find out and discuss the difference between academic and realworldMDRE. Results. We identify 6 elicitation techniques which can be used in MDRE to compare. We also collect6 challenges which may happen in MDRE elicitation process. We compare them by literature studyand interview with practitioners and find that although some interviewees’ opinions are similar withliterature, there are still many different cases we need to consider before choosing elicitationtechniques. Conclusions. In this research, we fill the gap that there is a lack of studies about the comparison ofelicitation techniques in MDRE context. We also find 4 factors which should be studied in-depth inthe future MDRE elicitation techniques research, and validate our result with practice and discuss thereason of differences. Our result can help requirements engineers to choose suitable elicitationtechniques in MDRE projects.

Value based requirements engineering

Whilst numerous studies have retrospectively reported the impact of negative user emotions, motivational problems or value clashes during software developments, few Requirements Engineering (RE) studies have considered the elicitation of users’ values, motivations or emotions (VM&Es) and there is little advice for practising analysts as to how to deal with these factors. This thesis explores the impact of users’ VM&Es within RE work. The starting point was a review of the current state of analyst practice. A literature survey considered the RE guidance available to analysts on the elicitation and understanding of ‘soft issues’ such as VM&Es. In parallel, a series of interviews with 12 industry analysts sought their views on the relevance of users’ VM&Es, the impact on requirements work, and approaches to identifying such information. This study identified behaviours adopted by experienced analysts that would be useful to promote to novice analysts, and documented the analysts’ own requirements for a method to support them in eliciting VM&Es. These findings informed the design of the Value Based Requirements Engineering (VBRE) method and website (www.vbre.org.uk), intended to support requirements analysts in identifying and considering the impact of such ‘soft factors’. Research into RE method adoption highlights the importance of industry input, so a Participatory Design (PD) approach was taken in developing VBRE, iteratively evaluating and refining the method with input from practising analysts. A series of complementary evaluations of the method are presented. An experimental study investigated the method’s utility and usability with computer science undergraduate students, whilst a set of four case studies explored adoption of the VBRE method with industry analysts. The analysts used the method during their RE work, adapting the approach according to their circumstances and levels of experience. The participants credited the method with a positive impact on their RE work and the novice analysts reported feeling more confident of their abilities to handle ‘soft issues’. The key contributions of this work are:1. An exploration of the views of practising analysts as to the relevance and impact of VM&Es within their RE work.2. Development of an analysis method and support materials to aid analysts in identifying users’ VM&Es.3. A demonstration of the utility of adopting a PD approach to the development of RE methods.4. An evaluation of the use of the method in industry, exploring the use of case studies to understand how novice and expert analysts adopt and adapt the VBRE approach. This thesis is unusual in taking a PD approach to developing a solution for a RE problem: that analysts need to understand users’ VM&Es and their impact on software projects. The VBRE method attempts to address this gap, and the positive reception given by the analysts involved in evaluation of the method indicates they see utility in the approach. Future work will focus on continuing to collaborate with industry analysts to understand their use of the VBRE method, identifying improvements to the method and website, and gathering examples of the method’s impact.

Does the Elicitation Mode Matter? Comparing Different Methods for Eliciting Expert Judgement

An expert elicitation is a method of eliciting subjective probability distributions over key parameters from experts. Traditionally an expert elicitation has taken the form of a face-to-face interview; however, interest in using online methods has been growing. This thesis compares two elicitation modes and examines the effectiveness of an interactive online survey compared to a face-to-face interview. Differences in central values, overconfidence, accuracy and satisficing were considered. The results of our analysis indicated that, in instances where the online and face-to-face elicitations were directly comparable, the differences between the modes was not significant. Consequently, a carefully designed online elicitation may be used successfully to obtain accurate forecasts.

Rooming Houses and Health: A Case Study

Background: Rooming house residents have high rates of morbidity and mortality, yet little is known about why this disparity in health exists. Research Question: How are rooming houses linked to health? Case: Social exclusion of rooming house residents in downtown Ottawa, bounded by the neighborhood, and Ottawa’s political policies at the time of data collection (September 2019-June 2020). Methodology: A single embedded descriptive case study was informed by multiple sources of evidence, and involved a community advisory group (CAG). Rooming house residents took photos, participated in a community walk-about with participant observations and attended a focus group. Two additional focus groups were conducted; one with fellow rooming house residents, another with the CAG. Interviews with rooming house front-line service providers and a secondary data set of homeless service measures also informed the case. Findings: 1. Rooming house residents (n=10) took 112 photos, and (n=8) took part in a focus group where two broad themes emerged: Housing is health care, and just managing today. 2. Interviews with front-line service providers (n=11) focused on two themes: There are many costs to living in a rooming house, and rooming house front-line service providers wear many hats. 3. Between a sample of sheltered homeless (n = 60) and rooming house residents (n=52), there was no difference found for several health indicators, including frequency of care received in the emergency room, hospitalization as an inpatient, and if substance use made it difficult to stay or afford housing. Focus groups with rooming house residents who did not take photos (n=10) and the GAG (n=6) contributed to persona co-creation revealing financial and contextual factors affecting the health of rooming house residents. Conclusion: The shared spaces of rooming houses create a tension between offering community and creating a risk environment. The negative health consequences to living in a rooming house are mitigated by the many roles that rooming house front-line service providers play in filling gaps. This study suggests the need to definitively position rooming house residents on the housing continuum in order to ensure equitable distribution of resources to optimize the health of this vulnerable population.
