Expressing emotions in a first and second language : evidence from French and English

This dissertation presents results from a study on the expression of emotions in a second language in order to address two overarching research questions: 1) What does the acquisition of L2 emotion lexicon and discourse features tell us about the pragmatic and communicative competence of late learners and the internalization of L2-specific concepts, and 2) Knowing that expressing emotions in L2 is one of the most challenging tasks for L2 learners (Dewaele, 2008), what can late L2 learners do at end-state, with regards to ultimate attainment and the possibility of nativelikeness? Narratives of positive and negative emotional experiences were elicited from late L2 learners of English and French at end-state, both in their L1 and L2. First, the acquisition of L2 emotion words was analyzed through the productivity and lexical richness of the emotion vocabulary of the bilinguals. Analysis of L2 emotion concepts was also conducted through the distribution of emotion lemmas across morphosyntactic categories. Lexical choice of emotion words was also investigated. Results showed that although L2 English and L2 French bilinguals' narratives were shorter than the monolinguals' and the proportion of emotion word tokens were fewer than that of monolinguals', bilinguals showed greater lexical richness than the monolinguals. In terms of morphosyntactic categories, bilinguals behaved in a nativelike pattern such that L2 English bilinguals favored adjectives and L2 French bilinguals preferred nouns/verbs. This pattern was held constant across the first languages of the bilinguals. With respect to lexical choice, bilinguals used the same emotion lemmas used the most by monolinguals. On occasion, non-nativelike patterns also emerged, suggesting both L1 transfer on L2 (L2 English bilinguals favoring nouns/verbs) and L2 transfer on L1 (L1 English bilinguals favoring nouns/verbs). However, these rare instances could be explained by individual and typological variability. The findings suggest that late L2 learners can achieve nativelike levels of attainment in L2, providing evidence against the existence of a critical period for the acquisition of L2 pragmatics and culture-specific L2 lexicon. In a separate analysis, the L2 discourse of emotion was investigated under a corpus linguistic framework, in order to shed some light into the ways late L2 learners of English and French talk about emotions in narratives of personal stories. The use of stance lemmas and tokens, and the distribution of these stance markers across categories of certainty and doubt evidentials, emphatics, hedges, and modals, as well as lexical choice of stance were analyzed. This was followed by an analysis of discourse features, such as figurative language, reported speech, epithets, depersonalization, and amount of detail. Results showed that although bilinguals produced significantly less stance lemmas and tokens than monolinguals, in terms of the distribution of stance categories, the French group (L2 French and L1 French bilinguals) behaved in a nativelike pattern, favoring emphatics, certainty evidentials, doubt evidentials, hedges, and modals. The English group's results, on the other hand, were somewhat inconsistent, in that neither L2 English bilinguals, nor L1 English bilinguals followed the distribution pattern of English monolinguals. In terms of nativelike performance, we conclude that the L2 French bilinguals did perform nativelike with regards to stance marking, and that L2 English bilinguals also performed nativelike, but only for certain categories of stance. Also, L2 English transfer on L1 French was evidenced for L1 French bilinguals. Analysis of discourse features revealed between 1 up to 10 bilinguals (L2 English or French) out of 31 who used those features which were only evidenced in native speech in previous research. The findings here, once again suggest that late L2 learners can acquire aspects of L2 discourse to a nativelike degree. / text

Des recherches en psychologie fonctionnaliste et en psychologie sociale ont établi de manière robuste l’existence de liens entre les émotions et la cognition, entre les émotions et l’apprentissage de langues et entre les émotions et les performances en langues étrangères. Cette thèse, inscrite dans le champ des sciences du langage - et de la didactique des langues, a pour objectif de décrire et d’analyser les manifestations verbales des émotions dans des entretiens de conseil à partir d’un corpus constitué d’authentiques séquences de travail enregistrées et transcrites. L’analyse porte sur les épisodes émotionnels et sur les énoncés d’émotions dans le contexte de l’entretien de conseil. La méthodologie utilisée pour repérer les épisodes émotionnels comporte deux étapes : une première étape où des signaux linguistiques considérés comme signalant potentiellement une émotion sont repérés, et par accumulation, indiquent des séquences particulières dans les entretiens de conseil, et une seconde étape où les séquences ainsi isolées sont étudiées qualitativement afin de mettre en évidence la présence ou l’absence d’émotion. Sur le plan des épisodes émotionnels, nos analyses mettent en évidence une gamme d’émotions plus large chez les apprenants, et une tendance chez les conseillères à utiliser leurs propres émotions afin d’effectuer du travail émotionnel auprès de l’apprenant. Sur le plan discursif, l’observation des énoncés d’émotions permet tout d’abord de mettre en évidence la place centrale de l’apprenant : une large majorité des énoncés d’émotions désignent en effet l’apprenant comme personne concernée par l’émotion. Par ailleurs, des postures différentes ont pu être identifiées chez les conseillères et chez les apprenants quant à l’utilisation des termes d’émotion. L’apprenant utilise principalement les énoncés d’émotion afin de s’auto-attribuer des émotions tandis que les conseillères utilisent les énoncés d’émotion afin de projeter des émotions chez les apprenants. Les observations effectuées permettent également de mettre en évidence un lien entre les émotions évoquées dans les entretiens de conseil et le déroulement de la formation. De manière générale, les émotions (épisodes émotionnels et énoncés d’émotion) apparaissent comme des indicateurs précis du déroulement de la formation. / Research in functionalist psychology and social psychology has shown the existence of strong relationships between emotions and cognition, between emotions and language learning, and between emotions and performances in foreign languages. This thesis in applied linguistics aims to describe and analyse the verbal manifestations of emotions from a corpus of authentic advising sessions which were recorded and transcribed. The analysis focuses on emotional episodes and emotion statements in the context of advising sessions. The methodology used to identify emotional episodes comprises two stages: in the first stage, linguistic cues are identified as potential signals of an emotion and, when accumulated, indicate particular sequences of speech; in the second stage, these sequences are isolated and qualitatively studied in order to either confirm or reject the presence of emotions. In terms of emotional episodes, the analyses show that learners exhibit a more diverse range of emotions than advisors. There is also a tendency for advisors to use their own emotions while performing emotional work. The observation of emotion statements shows first the centrality of the learner’s position: a large majority of emotion statements indeed involve the learner. Second, different postures were identified between advisers and learners in the use of terms of emotion. When using emotion statements, learners aim to self-assign emotions while advisers use emotion statements to project emotions on to learners. The analysis also helped to highlight the link between emotions expressed in advising sessions and the rhythm of learning. In general, emotions (emotional episodes and emotion statements) appear to be accurate indicators of progress in the learning process.

Detection, Modelling and Visualisation of Georeferenced Emotions from User-Generated Content

In recent years emotion-related applications like smartphone apps that document and analyse the emotions of the user, have become very popular. But research also can deal with human emotions in a very technology-driven approach. Thus space-related emotions are of interest as well which can be visualised cartographically and can be captured in different ways. The research project of this dissertation deals with the extraction of georeferenced emotions from the written language in the metadata of Flickr and Panoramio photos, thus from user-generated content, as well as with their modelling and visualisation. Motivation is the integration of an emotional component into location-based services for tourism since only factual information is considered thus far although places have an emotional impact. The metadata of those user-generated photos contain descriptions of the place that is depicted within the respective picture. The words used have affective connotations which are determined with the help of emotional word lists. The emotion that is associated with the particular word in the word list is described on the basis of the two dimensions ‘valence’ and ‘arousal’. Together with the coordinates of the respective photo, the extracted emotion forms a georeferenced emotion. The algorithm that was developed for the extraction of these emotions applies different approaches from the field of computer linguistics and considers grammatical special cases like the amplification or negation of words. The algorithm was applied to a dataset of Flickr and Panoramio photos of Dresden (Germany). The results are an emotional characterisation of space which makes it possible to assess and investigate specific features of georeferenced emotions. These features are especially related to the temporal dependence and the temporal reference of emotions on one hand; on the other hand collectively and individually perceived emotions have to be distinguished. As a consequence, a place does not necessarily have to be connected with merely one emotion but possibly also with several. The analysis was carried out with the help of different cartographic visualisations. The temporal occurrence of georeferenced emotions was examined detailed. Hence the dissertation focuses on fundamental research into the extraction of space-related emotions from georeferenced user-generated content as well as their visualisation. However as an outlook, further research questions and core themes are identified which arose during the investigations. Ebenfalls in der Forschung sind Emotionen in einem sehr technologiegetriebenen Ansatz ein Thema. So auch ortsbezogene Emotionen, die sich somit kartographisch darstellen lassen und auf verschiedene Art und Weisen gewonnen werden können. Das Forschungsvorhaben der Dissertation befasst sich mit der Extraktion von georeferenzierten Emotionen aus geschriebener Sprache unter Verwendung von Metadaten verorteter Flickr- und Panoramio-Fotos, d.h. aus nutzergenerierten Inhalten, sowie deren Modellierung und Visualisierung. Motivation hierfür ist die Einbindung einer emotionalen Komponente in ortsbasierte touristische Dienste, da diese bisher nur faktische Informationen berücksichtigen, obwohl Orte durchaus eine emotionale Wirkung haben. Die Metadaten dieser nutzergenerierten Inhalte stellen Beschreibungen des auf dem Foto festgehaltenen Ortes dar. Die dafür verwendeten Wörter besitzen affektive Konnotationen, welche mit Hilfe emotionaler Wortlisten ermittelt werden. Die Emotion, die mit dem jeweiligen Wort in der Wortliste assoziiert wird, wird anhand der zwei Dimensionen Valenz und Erregung beschrieben. Die extrahierten Emotionen bilden zusammen mit der geographischen Koordinate des jeweiligen Fotos eine georeferenzierte Emotion. Der zur Extraktion dieser Emotionen entwickelte Algorithmus bringt verschiedene Ansätze aus dem Bereich der Computerlinguistik zum Einsatz und berücksichtigt ebenso grammatikalische Sonderfälle, wie Intensivierung oder Negation von Wörtern. Der Algorithmus wurde auf einen Datensatz von Flickr- und Panoramio-Fotos von Dresden angewendet. Die Ergebnisse stellen eine emotionale Raumcharakterisierung dar und ermöglichen es, spezifische Eigenschaften verorteter Emotionen festzustellen und zu untersuchen. Diese Eigenschaften beziehen sich sowohl auf die zeitliche Abhängigkeit und den zeitlichen Bezug von Emotionen, als auch darauf, dass zwischen kollektiv und individuell wahrgenommenen Emotionen unterschieden werden muss. Das bedeutet, dass ein Ort nicht nur mit einer Emotion verbunden sein muss, sondern möglicherweise auch mit mehreren. Die Auswertung erfolgte mithilfe verschiedener kartographischer Visualisierungen. Eingehender wurde das zeitliche Auftreten der ortsbezogenen Emotionen untersucht. Der Fokus der Dissertation liegt somit auf der Grundlagenforschung zur Extraktion verorteter Emotionen aus georeferenzierten nutzergenerierten Inhalten sowie deren Visualisierung.
