Energy-aware encryption mechanism for m-commerce devices

With the wide spread of mobile phones, PDAs, and Smartphones, M-Commerce has become a major application domain for mobile devices, unlike conventional wired networks, mobile devices allow the user to conduct online transactions regardless of the time and the place as long as there is mobile network coverage. However, online transactions require adequate level of security to insure the confidentiality, the integrity, and the availability of the user’s information. Security measures consume a considerable amount of energy and require more time in processing. The aim of this thesis is to optimise the energy and the resources consumption of mobile phones when applying variant symmetric and asymmetric schemes. This aim can be achieved through developing A System State Security Management Framework, SSSM, which will implement encryption schemes, symmetric and asymmetric, and will provide different options to enable the user to choose the type of encryption, the key size, and number of rounds of computation to optimise the energy consumption level of the mobile phone. This thesis compares the power and the resources consumed by the most commonly used encryption algorithms such as CAST, IDEA, Triple-DES, RSA, and AlGamal. This comparison helps to draw the advantages and disadvantages of each algorithm scheme used in reference to the security level it provides and the power it consumes. Implementing this mechanism will enhance the performance of mobile phones by increasing the security levelsprovided by the encryption schemes and utilising the limited power and resources efficiency. Therefore, confidentiality will be presented in mobile phones and variant encryption schemes, symmetric and asymmetric, and changeable key sizes and rounds, will ensure the authenticity of both senders and recipients depending on their needs as well as resources available. This research makes contributions in two major areas; the first area consists of the novel Energy Aware Encryption polices generated by this work, the second area of contribution is the energy measurements and experimental results which validate the approach presented in the research.

Analysis And Design Of Image And Video Encryption Algorithms

The rapid growth in multimedia based Internet systems and applications like video telephony, video on demand, network based DVD recorders and IP television has created a substantial need for multimedia security. One of the important requirements for multimedia security is transmission of the digital multimedia content in a secure manner using encryption for protecting it from eavesdropping. The simplest way of encrypting multimedia content is to consider the two-dimensional/three-dimensional image/video stream as an one-dimensional stream and to encrypt the entire content using standard block ciphers like AES, DES, IDEA or RC4 or using a stream cipher. The method of encrypting the entire multimedia content is considered as a naive encryption approach. Even though the naive encryption approach provides the desired security requirements, it imposes a large overhead on the multimedia codex. This is due to the size of the multimedia content, and also due to real time requirements of transmission and rendering. Hence, lightweight encryption schemes are gaining popularity for multimedia encryption. Lightweight Encryption schemes are based on the principle “Encrypt minimal and induce maximum noise". Lightweight encryption schemes are designed to take the structure of the multimedia content into consideration. In our work we analyze some of the existing lightweight encryption schemes for digital images and video. The analysis is done based on the amount of security, scalability and effect on compression. A detailed study of some of the existing lightweight encryption schemes is also done by designing cryptanalysis schemes. The cryptanalysis schemes are designed using image noise clearing algorithms and pixel prediction techniques. The designed cryptanalysis schemes reduce the amount of noise introduced by the corresponding lightweight encryption schemes considerably. Based on our analysis of existing lightweight encryption schemes, we propose a set of more robust lightweight encryption schemes for images and video. The proposed lightweight encryption schemes are secure, scalable, and do not degrade the compression achieved. In our work, we also propose a few enhancements to JPEG image compression for achieving more compression, without compromising on the quality. The enhancements to the JPEG compression are extensions of the pixel prediction techniques used in the proposed cryptanalysis schemes.

Implementace šifrovacích algoritmů v jazyku VHDL / Implementation of Encryption Algorithms in VHDL Language

This thesis deals with design and implementation of AES and DES encryption architectures for embedded systems. Architectures are implemented in VHDL language and design for FPGA technology. The proposed implementations are mapped on the Xilinx Spartan 3 technology. Both architectures are applied in simple ECB (Electronic Codebook) scheme with cache memories. A maximum throughput of design DES architecture 370 Mbps is achived with clock frequency of 104 MHz. The throughput of AES architecture at the maximum clock frequency of 118 MHz is 228 Mbps. Compared to software implementations for embedded systems, we achieve significantly higher throughput for both architectures.

Σχεδιασμός και υλοποίηση μηχανισμού πολλαπλών συναρτήσεων κατακερματισμού (Sha-256, Sha-512 και Multi-mode)

Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία θα μελετήσουμε τις διαδικασίες της κρυπτογράφησης και της αποκρυπτογράφησης. Θα αναφερθούμε στους λόγους που τις έκαναν δημοφιλείς σε πολλά πεδία εφαρμογής (μαθηματικά, εμπόριο, στρατός κ.α). Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά θα γίνει στους κρυπτογραφικούς αλγορίθμους SHA-256 και SHA-512. Θα μελετήσουμε τη δομή τους και τον τρόπο λειτουργίας τους. Στη συνέχεια θα μελετήσουμε πως μπορούμε σε ένα κύκλωμα να συνδυάσουμε τόσο τη λειτουργία του αλγορίθμου SHA-256, όσο και του SHA-512. Το καινούργιο αυτό κύκλωμα καλείται multi-mode. Τέλος, θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε το Modelsim για την εξομοίωση των αλγορίθμων και το εργαλείο Xilinx ISE θα βοηθήσει στη σύνθεσή τόσο των μεμονωμένων αλγορίθμων, όσο και του multi-mode κυκλώματος. / In this diploma thesis, we will study the process of encryption and decryption. We will refer to the reasons why these processes are so popular in many fields (mathematics, trade, army, etc). A special reference will be made in the cryptographic algorithms SHA-256 and SHA-512. We will study their structure and function. Furthermore, we will discuss the two above mentioned algorithms can be operated in the same circuit. This is called multi-mode. Finally, we will use Modelsim in order to compile our algorithms and Xilinx ISE for the synthesis not only for the stand-alone algorithms, but for the multi-mode circuit, as well.

Softwarová podpora výuky kryptosystémů založených na problému faktorizace velkých čísel / Software support of education in cryptography based on integer factorization

This thesis deals with new teaching software, which supports asymmetric encryption algorithms based on the issue of large numbers´ factorization. A model program was created. It allows to carry out operations related to encryption and decryption with an interactive control. There is a simple way to understand the principle of the RSA encryption method with its help. The encryption of algorithms is generally analysed in chapters 1,2. Chapters 3 and 4 deals with RSA encryption algorithm in much more details, and it also describes the principles of the acquisition, management and usage of encryption keys. Chapters 5 suggest choosing of appropriate technologies for the creation of the final software product, which allow an appropriate way to present the characteristics of the extended RSA encryption algorithm. The final software product is the java applet. Aplet is described in the chaprers 6 and 7. It is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part presents general information about the RSA encryption algorithm. The practical part allows the users of the program to have a try at tasks connected with the RSA algorthm in their own computers. The last part of Java applet deals with the users´ work results. The information obtained by the user in the various sections of the program are satisfactory enough to understand the principle of this algorithm´s operations.

Integration of UAVS with Real Time Operating Systems and Establishing a Secure Data Transmission

In today’s world, the applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems are leaping by extending their scope from military applications on to commercial and medical sectors as well. Owing to this commercialization, the need to append external hardware with UAV systems becomes inevitable. This external hardware could aid in enabling wireless data transfer between the UAV system and remote Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) using low powered architecture like Thread, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). The data is being transmitted from the flight controller to the ground control station using a MAVlink (Micro Air Vehicle Link) protocol. But this radio transmission method is not secure, which may lead to data leakage problems. The ideal aim of this research is to address the issues of integrating different hardware with the flight controller of the UAV system using a light-weight protocol called UAVCAN (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Controller Area Network). This would result in reduced wiring and would harness the problem of integrating multiple systems to UAV. At the same time, data security is addressed by deploying an encryption chip into the UAV system to encrypt the data transfer using ECC (Elliptic curve cryptography) and transmitting it to cloud platforms instead of radio transmission.

Kryptoanalýza symetrických šifrovacích algoritmů s využitím symbolické regrese a genetického programování / Cryptanalysis of Symmetric Encryption Algorithms Using Genetic Programming

This diploma thesis deals with the cryptanalysis of symmetric encryption algorithms. The aim of this thesis is to show different point of view on this issues. The dissimilar way, compared to the recent methods, lies in the use of the power of evolutionary principles which are in the cryptanalytic system applied with help of genetic programming. In the theoretical part the cryptography, cryptanalysis of symmetric encryption algorithms and genetic programming are described. On the ground of the obtained information a project of cryptanalytic system which uses evolutionary principles is represented. Practical part deals with implementation of symmetric encrypting algorithm, linear cryptanalysis and simulation instrument of genetic programming. The end of the thesis represents experiments together with projected cryptanalytic system which uses genetic programming and evaluates reached results.
