Production strategy employed by small, medium and micro engineering enterprises in the Jacobs area in Durban.Rakoma, Abia. January 2012 (has links)
This study investigated the production strategies employed by the small, medium and
micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the Jacobs area in Durban. The research on the
production strategies employed by SMMEs supports the government’s initiative of
growing small businesses to help create employment and contribute to poverty
alleviation in the country. This study is also significant as its recommendations will be of
value to SMME owners and prospective SMME owners. The research methodology
employed in this study is quantitative research methodology. The questionnaire used in
this study elicited views of seventeen questions designed from the literature review. The
questionnaire used the five point Likert scale for question two to seventeen, while in
question one respondents had to choose from a list of production strategies. The
questionnaire was divided into five parts with each part of the questionnaire linked to
one of the five objectives of the study. A sample of 30 registered SMMEs in the Jacobs
area was used. Though this is a small scale study, if its findings and recommendations
are followed by the SMME owners they will add to their businesses an abundance of
value. The findings from the field work provided by the respondents to the questionnaire
were consistent with the findings in the literature review. The key findings of the study
were that there are challenges when implementing production strategies; however the
effectiveness, benefits and the risks of not having a production strategy in place far
outweigh those challenges, furthermore it was found that with good planning, training
and communication the effect of those challenges can be mitigated. A rigorous study on
SMMEs that do not use production strategies was recommended as a suggestion for
further research to establish if their productivity and profitability were the same as those
SMMEs that employed production strategies. / Thesis (MBA)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2012.

[EN] The Spanish economic crisis began in 2007 and it produced a significant reduction in demand that affected Spanish engineering companies seriously. Many of them started an internationalization process to ensure their continuity, but this decision was adopted in a hurry and without enough time to acquire knowledge of the foreign market and the risks that international activity entailed. This situation was aggravated in the case of SMEs, which have fewer resources and capacities to face internationalization with guarantees. With the design of an internationalization maturity model, this research aims to offer a guide to engineering companies that are going to start or have started an internationalization process. The design of the model is based on: (1) the theoretical knowledge of the variables that affect international success in the construction sector, validated through interviews with ten internationalized engineering companies; (2) the factors involved in the international expansion of the companies; and (3) the most relevant maturity models. The design of the model is carried out following the Design Science Research (DSR) approach, in which the model is subjected to design and validation iterations that increase its applicability. In these iterations several research techniques are applied: focus group, pilot test and multiple case study; through these case studies the model is applied to eight engineering companies. These implementations have made it possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the companies, their level of internationalization maturity and the influence of the size and international experience of the companies on their level of maturity and on the value of the internationalization indices. / Lozano Torró, A. Towards an information security awareness process for engineering SMEs in emerging economiesGundu, Tapiwa January 2013 (has links)
With most employees in Engineering Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) now having access to their own personal workstations, the need for information security management to safeguard against loss/alteration or theft of the firms’ important information has increased. These Engineering SMEs tend to be more concerned with vulnerabilities from external threats, although industry research suggests that a substantial proportion of security incidents originate from insiders within the firm. Hence, technical preventative measures such as antivirus software and firewalls are proving to solve only part of the problem as the employees controlling them lack adequate information security knowledge. This tends to expose a firm to risk and costly mistakes made by naïve/uninformed employees. This dissertation presents an information security awareness process that seeks to cultivate positive security behaviours using a behavioural intention model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action, Protection Motivation Theory and the Behaviourism Theory. The process and model have been refined and verified using expert review and tested through action research at an Engineering SME in South Africa. The main finding was information security levels of employees within the firm were low, but the proposed information security awareness process increased their knowledge thereby positively altering their behaviour.
