Stereotypes in British Comedy : An Analysis of Open All Hours and The Good Life

BELAMENDIA, AINTZANE January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this work is to analyse how the comic effect is constructed from a series ofstereotypes that characterize the British sitcoms of the 1970s and 1980s. It is based on thewriter´s hypothesis that British television situation comedy in the second half of the twentiethcentury depended heavily on depicting mythical stereotypical characters in British society andconfronting these with aspects of modernity, especially in relation to the relaxation of sexualmores and the erosion of class distinction. The identification of stereotypes is essential inorder to explain “representation” (Hall, 1997). The attempt is made to investigate the humourthough the General Theory of Verbal Humour (Raskin and Attardo, 1991). Next, an analysishas been conducted into how humorous utterances are produced by Relevance Theory(Sperber and Wilson, 1986). Lastly, sexual innuendoes and double entendres are analysed. The analysis shows that humour based on stereotypes including features related to class, raceand gender were crucial in sitcoms from the studied decade, and the humour was frequentlymade obliquely, and yet deniably, sexual using such innuendo. Unexpected transgressions ofstrict boundaries created a comic effect. In the 1970s the class structure was still clearlymanifest in the society and was available to be caricatured; similarly, while there had beensome challenge to gender roles from the Women´s Liberation movement of the time, theseroles were still largely discernible. It is found that sitcoms were, to a large extent, reflectionsof societal trends and millions of people spent much of their spare time consuming them onthe limited number of television channels then available.

"Unbroken Darkness” : Christian Missionary Conceptions of Blindness in Early 20th Century Korea

Appelgren, Tintin January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to explore Christian missionary conceptions of blindness in early 20thcentury Korea. This period of history is characterized by drastic changes to Koreansociety due to an increase in external influences on the peninsula, changes which alsoaffected the social position and perception of blind people. Christian missionariesplayed a central role in the changes to the lives of these blind people, which is why thisthesis aims to highlight missionary conceptions of blindness in Korea. To accomplishthis, some tools from critical discourse analysis are used to examine how blindness isconceptualized within several texts from Protestant missionary publications, using adisability studies framework to analyse the texts. The analysis showcases the religiousimagery and religious conceptions of blindness present in the texts, how these interactwith medical conceptions, and distinctions in the portrayal of blind people between thedifferent texts.

I statsmaktens fotspår : RT:s inramning av den illegala ryska annekteringen av Cherson, Zaporizjzja, Donetsk och Luhansk 2022

Wennerholm, David January 2023 (has links)
Although historically palpable throughout the eastern bloc, Russian state-sponsored propaganda has since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the ever-increasing authoritarian political development become increasingly visible. In conjunction with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the following Russian annexation of the four Ukrainian regions of Kherson Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk, the news network RT (Russia Today) has played an increasingly active role in disseminating Russian propaganda. As a consequence, this essay looks at RT’s framing of the Russian annexation of said regions by utilizing five pre-defined media frames that pertain to different aspects of the framed issue. The results show that all five frames were used in the news reporting by RT and that the collective West as an adversary plays an important role in the Russian narrative in the invasion of Ukraine.

Nationalism through Song in Postwar Japan : An Analysis of Themes in Kodama Yoshio's Minzoku no uta

Paloniemi, Joonas January 2023 (has links)
Music has always played an important role in warfare and dissemination of ideological messages. This study is a thematic analysis of a 1969 Japanese nationalistic song called Minzoku no uta, written by right-wing activist Kodama Yoshio. The aim is to offer possible explanations as to the thematic characteristics of the song, and to identify its core message. To this end, the interdisciplinary approach of critical discourse analysis is applied; in order to fully grasp the song's content, the author of this thesis performs a close reading of its lyrics and also produces a translation into English, which is guided by the skopos of documentary translation. The basic framework for the thematic content analysis is provided by a study by Satoshi Sugita (1972), which examines recurring major themes in Japanese war songs (known in Japanese as gunka), produced prior to and during the Second World War. This present study makes a comparison with Sugita's study, in order to determine thematic similarities and dissimilarities between Minzoku no uta and gunka. Gunka have been, and to some extent still are, a relatively unknown subject in English-language scholarship; this should ring even truer for nationalistic postwar songs such as Minzoku no uta. Therefore, the goal of this study is to shed more light on this niche subject. The primary material used in this research is the lyrics of Minzoku no uta, with Sugita's study and Kodama's autobiography Ware yaburetari constituting the most important secondary sources. The results of this study show that "nation" is the most salient theme in Minzoku no uta, which heavily affects how similar to or dissimilar from gunka the song is. The core message of the song seems to be centered around the appreciation and revival of an ideology called "the Imperial Way", known in Japanese as kōdō.

A comparison study of the JBXDMY construction inAmerican and British English

Sandström, Sebastian January 2023 (has links)
The "Just Because X Doesn't Mean Y" (JBXDMY) construction initially emerged in the1850s as a spoken expression, typically employed to convey a negative implication to theinterlocutor. This syntactic structure is prevalent in both British and American English, withthe most frequently observed variant in the British corpora being "Just Because X doesn'tmean Y," and in the American corpora, "X That doesn't mean Y." The present studyscrutinized samples from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and theBritish National Corpus (BNC) to discern disparities in the application and frequency ofvarious instances of this construction. In order to examine the structure of the clause comprehensively, the analysis encompassed itsconstituent elements. This investigation led to the delineation of the JBXDMY construction asfollows: "Just because X" operates as a subordinating clause, functioning as a clausal verbphrase adverbial. Concurrently, "Doesn't mean" constitutes a superordinate clause, encompassing the "Y" element, which is preceded by a word that may or may not be ellipted. This preceding word serves as the complementizer "that," assuming the role of a direct objectfor the verb phrase "doesn't mean Y."

"Så nu jag förstår hur man lagar svenska!” - En studie om språkinlärningsstrategier hos Sfi-elever

Rumjantseva, Karina January 2023 (has links)
