The Influence of Centripetal and Centrifugal Forces on Orthographic Choices and Linguistic Identification in Kågeträskdagboken

Alvengren, Jorunn January 2021 (has links)
This thesis is based on Kågeträskdagboken, a peasant diary written by sisters Greta and Lovisa Dahlqvist near Skellefteå in northern Sweden between 1981 and 1901. The research has sought to establish whether centripetal or centrifugal forces determine the orthographical choices Greta and Lovisa make in their writing as well as what kind of impact these forces have on these authors’ linguistic identification. When centripetal forces are at play, people tend to write in a way that agrees with conventions and standardised language which means that orthographical patterns are applied. Centrifugal forces move away from centring institutions and apply heterographic patterns that challenge a language’s norms and conventions. Research in this thesis was conducted using a variety of orthographic variables and meticulously reviewing the source material. After gathering the data, a lengthy process of analysis, interpretation, and compilation began. Based on the results, it is apparent that both centripetal and centrifugal forces influence the linguistic choices of the writers, as evidenced by the diary’s prevalent orthographic and heterographic spelling patterns. One further finding is that these forces are having a cumulative impact on the writers, creating an identification linguistically with both their local dialect, skelleftemål, and the standardised written language of Swedish.

Il piccolo mondo paesano: osservazioni traduttologiche sulla traduzione svedese de Il sarto della stradalunga di Giuseppe Bonaviri / “Den lilla världen på landet”: observationer kring den svenska översättningen av Giuseppe Bonaviris bok Skräddaren på långa gatan.

Consani, Cristina January 2021 (has links)

Consciousness as a Bridge between Worlds : The Fantastic Effects of The Third Policeman

Zaman, Ailya Waqar January 2019 (has links)
Abstract This essay explores Tzvetan Todorov’s theories on the fantastic and aims to give an analytical description of the cognitive processes of the reader of Flann O’Brien’s The Third Policeman upon encountering story elements that appear to defy natural laws. According to Todorov, the genre of the fantastic hinges on the reader’s “hesitation” when he tries to make sense of the supernatural element(s) in context of the novel; he hesitates while trying to decide whether there is a natural explanation for these events or whether the world of the narrative has entered what may be called the realm of the imaginary, the world of the marvelous, or a(n im)possible world. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the effects on reading when a reader is faced with a text where the storyworld remains ambiguous in terms of its genre. Through the effects of the fantastic, I argue, the reader is urged to leave the external storyworld of the text and finds refuge instead in the internal consciousness of the narrator-character. Keywords: The fantastic, cognitive narratology, storyworld, the supernatural, hesitation, suspension of disbelief, poetic faith, immersion, attribution theory, emotion theories.

Translanguaging in the English Classroom in Sweden – Friend or Foe?

Kolenovic, Dino, Cukalevska, Marija January 2022 (has links)
To be able to communicate properly in English, it is necessary to develop one’s all-around communicative abilities, consequently becoming a part of an expanding world where English is the lingua franca. Previous reports have shown that too much Swedish is spoken during English lessons in school (Skolinspektionen, 2011). Therefore, this study set out to investigate teachers’ perceptions and use of translanguaging in English language teaching. The study employed a qualitative approach to collect data from conducting semi-structured interviews with four certified 7-9 English teachers and one certified upper secondary teacher in Sweden. The teachers were asked questions about their beliefs, practices, and the reasons why translanguaging occurred in their classrooms. The results of this study were consistent with previous research regarding translanguaging practices in the English classroom. The results showed the perceived amount of teachers’ use of translanguaging in the English classroom to be relatively small. The specific points during a lesson when translanguaging occurred are when the teachers repeated instructions, provided clarification, and maintained discipline. In addition, the results showed that less proficient pupils in English are those who needed to use to translanguaging the most, in combination with insecure pupils and less motivated pupils despite their high proficiency.

Arier und Jude : Konstruktion von sprachlichem ‚Othering’ und Ideologie im Kapitel „Volk und Rasse” in Adolf Hitlers Mein Kampf / Aryan and Jew : Construction of Linguistic Othering and Ideology in the Chapter “Volk und Rasse” in Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf

Funke Gómez, Felix January 2022 (has links)
The topic of this paper is to critically analyze how Adolf Hitler, the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, later the dictator of National Socialist Germany, uses ‘Othering’ in the chapter “Volk und Rasse” (People and Race) in Mein Kampf (My Struggle) (1924/1925). The analysis demonstrates how Hitler’s language functions in his political discourse, in order to structure the national socialist group-identity in opposition to the ‘Jewish enemy’. Two different methods, which complement each other, are used: a method, based on corpus linguistics (computer-based and quantitative), and an actant model (qualitative through close-reading). The computer-based analysis shows, that the We and the Others are constructed by contrasts – in accordance with the theories of Michel Foucault and Zygmunt Bauman, so that the out-group may be expelled and the bond within the in-group strengthened. The collocations and concordances are immediate contrasts, e.g., the Jew is portrayed as a destroying Devil figure, while the Aryan appears as a constructive, outstanding Pioneer. The second, qualitative analysis demonstrates that the ideology in the chapter “Volk und Rasse” can be depicted as a “narrative through actants”. There is a struggle in the discourse between two sets of actants, associated with Aryans and Jews, which function as polar opposites to each other.

Öman, Fredrika January 2021 (has links)

Internationell dialog i Sergej Lavrovs Arktisdiskurs : En analys av epistemisk modalitet som uttryck för diskursiva strategier / International Dialogue in Sergey Lavrov's Arctic Discourse : An Analysis of Epistemic Modality as Means of Discursive Strategies

Mattsson, Hanna January 2020 (has links)
This study explores the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov’s, use of epistemic modality as means of discursive strategies during the period January 2019 - March 2020, and how these strategies frame the topic of International dialogue in the contemporary Russian Arctic discourse. The study employs discourse analysis as theory as well as method on an empirical material consisting of official texts that were published by the Russian Foreign Ministry. The study concludes that the most frequently employed discursive strategy was that of convincing, however mitigating and hedging were also relatively frequently used. Moreover, consistent with previous research, the topic of International dialogue was considered to be framed in a rather polarized manner. As such, the conclusion of this study presents that no significant deviations from the conclusions drawn from previous research on the Russian Arctic discourse were found in the studied material.
