Dynamic problems in computational geometry

Gowda, Ihor George January 1981 (has links)
Computational geometry is the study of algorithms for manipulating sets of points, lines, polygons, planes and other geometric objects. For many problems in this realm, the sets considered are static and the data structures representing them do not permit efficient insertion and deletion of objects (e.g. points). Dynamic problems, in which the set and the geometric data structure change over time, are also of interest. The topic of this thesis is the presentation of fast algorithms for fully dynamic maintenance of some common geometric structures. The following configurations are examined: planar nearest-point and farthest-point Voronoi diagrams, convex hulls (in two and three dimensions), common intersection of halfspaces (2-D and 3-D), and contour of maximal vectors (2-D and 3-D). The principal techniques exploited are fast merging of substructures, and the use of extra storage. Dynamic geometric search structures based upon the configurations are also presented. / Science, Faculty of / Computer Science, Department of / Graduate

"Had we our senses": Emily Dickinson's Envelope Poems and Materiality

Kronsbein, Kari Denise 01 May 2015 (has links)
This essay stresses the importance of the visual and material aspects of these manuscripts. By examining her work in relation to collage practices, it highlights Dickinson's role as an avant-garde figure in both American poetry and material culture. Rather than write interlocking theses that connect each reading, I aim to demonstrate the ways in which an art historical consideration of Dickinson's envelope manuscripts complicates the already open-ended nature of her poetry through associating the texts with the cultural phenomena of the scrapbook. Additionally, I will foreground the importance of the materiality of these works through emphasizing the role of correspondence in Dickinson's life.

Pseudoconvexity and the envelope of holomorphy for functions of several complex variables

Mullett, Lorne Barry January 1966 (has links)
We first handle some generalizations from the theory of functions of a single complex variable, including results regarding analytic continuation. Several "theorems of continuity" are considered, along with the associated definitions of pseudoconvexity, and these are shown to be equivalent up to a special kind of transformation. By successively applying a form of analytic continuation to a function f , a set of pseudoconvex domains is constructed, and the union of these domains is shown to be the envelope of holomorphy of f . / Science, Faculty of / Mathematics, Department of / Graduate

The Domestic Facade : Inhabitable Thresholds Between Public- And Domestic Domains

Johansson, Tony January 2022 (has links)
This thesis takes a step back to evaluate the architecture of the isolated Nordic home, where the exterior wall, or facade, stands out as the element with most potential for creating less isolated living conditions. As the physical threshold between domains of seemingly opposite social dynamics, the domestic- and the public; The façade serves as buildings most instrumental tool for establishing the relationship between the two. In their current state, however, as two-dimensional walls, facades have become limited in their ability to merge these two seamlessly. From having been a spatial composition of distinct elements –each with their own functions, facades of today have been reduced to only the outermost wrapping around buildings. However, when synthesizing research by architects R. Koolhaas, D. Leatherbarrow, M. Mostafavi and P. M. Martinelli, it becomes clear that contemporary facades are better understood as sealing systems that together with the rest of the buildings comprise the protective envelope around buildings. Therefore, in order to reverse the notion of facades only being superficial skins, and in hopes to create a more gradual separation between private homes and their public surroundings, this thesis speculates how facades could be distilled into distinct elements in order to be reintroduced as layers of a more spatial composition again. This new “Domestic Façade” then, as an assembly spanning between the interior and exterior, would compose an inhabitable threshold that facilitates free movement and living between the private unit and its public surroundings.
