Life-history strategies of primates

This thesis examines variation in the life-history parameters of primates using comparative techniques. Several theories of life-history evolution are introduced in the first chapter, together with a summary of the previous work on this topic. Scaling methods are used to separate variation in life-history parameters that is correlated with body weight from that which cannot be predicted from an animal's size. These methods are described in detail in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 describes the variation found in body size and basal metabolic rate and correlations with phylogeny, diet, habitat and other aspects of ecology. Patterns of variation in reproductive parameters, particularly reproductive rates (as measured by the intrinsic rate of natural increase, r_{max}) and reproductive effort (as measured by prenatal and postnatal infant growth rates), are described and compared with patterns reported in other studies. Possible reasons for the scaling relationships found are suggested and the influences of metabolic rate, phylogeny, diet, habitat and other aspects of ecology are investigated. This is carried out for all primates in Chapters 4-6 and in Chapter 7 there is a closer look at the cercopithecine monkeys. It is suggested that r_{max} is influenced by the predictability of the environment, with more unpredictable environments being associated with a higher r_{max} that more predictable environments. However, this is only found when body weight effects are removed from the r_{max} data. Growth rates do not appear to be correlated with environmental predictability but are mainly correlated with body size and relative metabolic rate. There is some indication that the degree of parental care may also be correlated with relative growth rates. It is concluded that no single theory of life-history evolution can amount for the variation found in primate life-histories, but that some aspects of several theories may be useful in describing the patterns found.

Spatial configuration, spatial cognition and spatial behaviour : the role of architectural intelligibility in shaping spatial experience

This thesis investigates the role of spatial configuration in shaping resident's experience of their neighbourhood. Studies to date have found that spatial configuration affects spatial behaviour and movement patterns (e.g., Hillier et al, 1993), however there has been little investigation of the cognitive processes that might underlie this relationship. Other research into cognition of the urban environment suggests that local spatial factors may play a role in cognitive processes (e.g., Hart & Moor, 1973), however these studies have not addressed global spatial configuration in quantitative terms. No studies to date have sought to integrate cognitive, behavioural and configurational factors within a single framework. Using Hillier's (1996) definition of intelligibility as the relationship between local and global configurational factors, this thesis investigates the relationship between resident's cognition, observed patterns of movement and the spatial configuration of an area. Two adjacent areas in Hampstead Garden Suburb in North London were investigated in detail. One area is relatively intelligible, the other less so. Structured interview surveys were carried out with local residents to elicit aspects of their cognition of the local area and detailed observations were made of movement patterns in the two neighbourhoods. Analysis of the spatial characteristics of the two areas using 'space syntax' methods provided a common basis for analyses of these data. The findings confirm that spatial configuration, spatial cognition and space use patterns are all related to one another. The main finding is that the degree of intelligibility of the area is the most significant intervening variable in relations between the three variables. The more intelligible area showed more powerful correlations between spatial configuration and patterns of movement, as well as giving rise to perceptions of greater legibility and increased neighbourhood size by local residents. Strong correlations were also identified between residents' cognitive maps and observed patterns of movement in the area. The correlations were again found to be stronger in the intelligible area than the unintelligible area. These findings suggest that spatial configuration may play an important role in determining people's daily spatial experience by increasing or reducing their sense of autonomy. By reducing the ability to predict either one's precise location within his/her global context, or the likely behaviour of others in space, unintelligible urban configurations may result in perceptions of a lesser sense of personal control over one's own actions in the environment. The thesis concludes that 'architectural intelligibility' may be a basic aspect in achieving human spatial needs.

Component based performance simulation of HVAC systems

The design process of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems is based upon selecting suitable components and matching their performance at an arbitrary design point, usually determined by an analysis of the peak environmental loads on a building. The part load operation of systems and plant is rarely investigated due to the complexity of the analysis and the pressure of limited design time. System simulation techniques have been developed to analyse the performance of specific commonly used systems: however these 'fixed menu, simulations do not permit appraisal of hybrid and innovative design proposals. The thesis describes research into the development of a component based simulation technique in which any system may be represented by a network of components and their interconnecting variables. The generalised network formulation described is based upon the engineer's schematic diagram and gives the designer the same flexibility in simulation as is available in design. The formulation of suitable component algorithms using readily available performance data is discussed, the models developed being of a 'lumped parameter' steady state form. The system component equations are solved simultaneously for a particular operating point using a gradient based non-linear optimisation algorithm. The application of several optimisation algorithms to the solution of RVAC systems is described and the limitations of these methods are discussed. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made for the required attributes of an optimisation algorithm to suit the particular characteristics of HVAC systems. The structure of the simulation program developed is given and the application of the component based simulation procedure to several systems is described. The potential for the use of the simulation technique as a design tool is discussed and recommendations for further work are made.
