On Cosmological Terms : A Study on Terminological Equivalence and Insufficient TerminologiesVeenhuizen, Jacob January 2014 (has links)
Terminology is an aspect of scientific-technical texts that can be quite problematic to deal with for a translator, depending on the subject. In many fields of study, the terminology is highly specific and each term clearly defined as relating to a certain concept. The problem for the translator then is to find a term within the terminology of the target language that relates to the same concept. The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of translating terminology in an advanced text on cosmology. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses are used in order to indicate the frequency of various problems relating to the translation of terminology and what strategies can be used to solve the various problems in a satisfactory manner, respectively. These analyses involve a study of terminological equivalence as well as the challenges that arise when the terminology of a given field lacks certain terms in a given language. The paper will show that a certain lack of terminological equivalence between English and Swedish as well as the greater issue of a limited development of the cosmological terminology in Swedish are two considerable problems when translating an advanced cosmological text from English into Swedish.

The intention of this essay is to illustrate and describe various means to overcome some of the difficulties that any translator dealing with technical translations at some point or another would come upon – presented in a qualitative analysis. The text under analysis is a chapter called Into the Cosmos and is part of the book Planet Quest – The Epic Discovery of Alien Solar Systems by the American astronomer Ken Croswell. The analysis specifically focuses on terminology and two aspects that usually are part of the cultural adaptation of a text; namely additions and omissions. However, in this essay they help adapting the text towards a new target audience not so much because of culture, but rather because of my decision to fully disconnect the text from the context in which it previously functioned. And because of this, the target text was in the end given more of an educational character compared to the source text.

Det finns dock f˚a program, om n˚agra, som utnyttjar b˚ade l¨ankning och bed¨omning p˚a ett s˚adant s¨att att de skulle kunna vara anv¨andbara vid till exempel spr˚akutbildningar. I detta arbete utvecklas just ett s˚adant program. Programmet som skapats kan segmentera och l¨anka parallella texter mot varandra helt automatiskt via inkopplade system. F¨or att ¨oka anv¨andarv¨anligheten s˚a visualiserar programmet ¨aven l¨ankningen och till˚ater redigering av b˚ade segmentering och l¨ankning. Conditional Discrimination and Stimulus Equivalence: Effects of Suppressing Derived Symmetrical Responses on the Emergence of Transitivity.Jones, Aaron A. 05 1900 (has links)
Symmetry suppression was conducted for five subjects who demonstrated a tendency to derive equivalence relations based on conditional discrimination training in a match-to-sample procedure. Symmetry suppression was applied in three consecutive sessions in which symmetrical responses were suppressed for one stimulus class in the first condition, two stimulus classes in the second condition, and all three stimulus classes in the final condition. Symmetry suppression slowed the emergence of transitivity for two subjects and prevented it for the other three. Results indicated that unplanned features of stimulus configurations emerged as discriminative variables that controlled selection responses and altered the function of consequent stimuli. Disruption of cognitive development by conflicting contingencies in natural learning environments is discussed.

Dans cet ouvrage, nous nous donnons pour tâche d’investiguer la nature et le rôle du transfert interlingual dans le traitement du passé composé et de l’imparfait en français par les étudiants akanophones du FLE, scolarisés en anglais. À la base d’un cadre construit sur les théories cognitives de Langacker (1986, 2008) et de Talmy (2000a, 2000b) sur l’aspect, ainsi que celles de Jakobson (1959) et de Catford (1965) sur l’équivalence, des données ont été collectées auprès de 57 sujets dans deux universités publiques du Ghana. Les analyses faites à l’aide du PSPP révèlent une tendance de transférer les caractéristiques aspectuo-temporelles du verbe anglais au verbe français chez les participants, menant à une mauvaise interprétation des deux temps. La connaissance de l'akan n'y joue aucun rôle. Nous recommandons que les enseignants fassent référence aux L1 lors de l’introduction des nouveaux concepts, entre autres. / This research studies the nature and the extent of the challenges students face with passé composé and imparfait as regards aspect. We investigate the respective roles of Akan, an aspectual language, and of English, a more temporal language in relation to these challenges. Stratified random sampling was employed in data collection among up to 57 students Toolsemployed were interviews, questionnaires and translation tests.The data was analysed with PSPP and discussed within a framework of the cognitive theories of Langacker (1986, 2008) and Talmy (2000a, 2000b), and Jakobson's (1959) et Catford's (1965) theories of equivalence. Results show that Akanophone students of French superimpose TAM featues of English on these French tenses and thus misinterpret them. Learners' background knowledge of Akan plays no role in these operations. We recommend that teachers of French refer to knowledge of L1 in introducing new concepts.

This thesis focuses on improving the process of automated planing through symmetry breaking. The aim is to describe symmetries, which are often observed by human programmers, but haven't been properly theoretically formalized. After an analysis of available research, there are new definitions of symmetries proposed in context of classical planning, such as state equivalence, T1 automorphisms and more general automorphisms of constants. Several theorems are proved about new symmetries. As a result, an algorithm for detecting a special symmetry class is proposed, together with a method of exploiting such class during planning. The equivalence principle has proven to be central to theories of gravity, with General Relativity being the simplest and most elegant theory to embody the principle. Most alternative theories of gravity struggle to satisfy the principle and still be distinct from GR. Extensions of cosmological and quantum theories question the irrefutably of the equivalence at every scale. The possibility of an equivalence principle violation at galactic scales would be an exciting prospect. In this thesis, we will carefully examine the equivalence principle through the study of chameleon scalar-tensor theories, this will include solutions for hypothetical stars known as boson stars. Such theories find varied application, especially in cosmology, where they model dark energy and inflation. The AWE hypothesis, is an instance of this. It is a nonuniversally coupled model in which violations of the equivalence principle on galactic scales may be apparent. We investigate spherically symmetric and static solutions within the framework of this theory. The constraints obtained from galactic rotation curves results in values of the couplings that show no significant violation of the equivalence principle or values consistent with a theory of dark energy

Durant ces deux dernières décennies, de nouvelles techniques pour refroidir et manipuler les atomes ont permis le développement de capteurs inertiels basés sur l'interférométrie atomique. Dans ce contexte, le projet ICE est basé sur l'utilisation d'un interféromètre atomique double espèce compacte et transportable dans le but de tester le principe d'équivalence faible. Nous comparons ainsi l'accélération de deux espèces chimiques et nous vérifions leur égalité en mesurant le paramètre d'Eötvös à un niveau de 10-6. Cette expérience a été réalisée en laboratoire et en micropesanteur lors de vols paraboliques à bord de l'Airbus A310 ZERO-G de Novespace. L'interféromètre est composé de deux échantillons de 87Rb et 39K refroidis par laser, possédant des longueurs d'onde de transitions atomiques similaires (780 nm et 767 nm) qui sont générées par un doublage de fréquence laser Télécom. Récemment, nous avons réalisé le premier interféromètre double espèce en micropesanteur. Cette expérience a ainsi permis le premier test du principe d'équivalence faible dans cet environnement en utilisant des objets quantiques, ce qui représente une première étape majeure vers une future mission spatiale. Dans le cadre de ces travaux, nous avons installé une source laser à 770 nm, accordée sur la transition D1 du 39K, afin de réaliser un refroidissement par mélasse grise. Nous avons également mis en place une nouvelle séquence pour préparer les atomes dans l'état mF = 0 avec une efficacité de transfert supérieure à 90%. Ces techniques ont amélioré le contraste de notre interféromètre de 39K d'un facteur 4, ce qui a mené à l'obtention d'une sensibilité sur le paramètre d'Eötvös dans le laboratoire de 5 x 10-8 après 5000 s d'intégration. / During the last two decades, new techniques to cool and manipulate atoms have enabled the development of inertial sensors based on atom interferometry. In this context, the ICE project is based on a compact and transportable dual-species atom interferometer in order to verify the weak equivalence principle (WEP). Thus, we compare the acceleration of two chemical species and verify their equality by measuring the Eötvös parameter at the 10-6 level.This experiment was performed both in the laboratory and in the microgravity environment during parabolic flights onboard the Novespace ZERO-G aircraft. The interferometer is composed of laser-cooled samples of 87Rb and 39K, which exhibit similar transition wavelengths (780 nm and 767 nm) derived from frequency-doubled telecom lasers. Recently, we have performed the first dual species interferometer in microgravity. This enables the first test of the WEP in weightlessness using quantum objects, which represents a major first step toward future mission in space.As part of these experiments, we have implemented a 770 nm laser source, resonant with the D1 transition of 39K, in order to perform a gray molasses cooling. We have also devised a new sequence to prepare atoms in the mF = 0 state with a transfer efficiency above 90%. These techniques improved the contrast of our 39K interferometer by a factor 4, which led to the obtention of a sensitivity on the Eötvös parameter in the laboratory of 5 x 10-8 after 5000 s of integration.

Associated to Br*(E,c) is a natural (Borel) Cartan subalgebra (Definition 6.4.10) L(Bo(X)) isomorphic to the bounded Borel functions on X. Then L(Bo(X)) and its normalizer (the set of the unitaries u in Br*(E,c) such that u*fu in L(Bo(X)), f in L(Bo(X))) countably generates the Borel *-algebra Br*(E,c). In this thesis, we study Br*(E,c) and in particular prove that: i) If E is smooth, then Br*(E,c) is a type I Borel *-algebra (Definition 6.3.10). ii) If E is a hyperfinite, then Br*(E,c) is a Borel AF-algebra (Definition 7.5.1). iii) Generalizing Kumjian's definition, we define a Borel twist G over E and its associated sequentially closed Borel *-algebra Br*(G). iv) Let a Borel Cartan pair (B, Bo) denote a sequentially closed Borel *-algebra B with a Borel Cartan subalgebra Bo, where B is countably Bo-generated. Generalizing Feldman-Moore's result, we prove that any pair (B, Bo) can be realized uniquely as a pair (Br*(E,c), L(Bo(X))). Moreover, we show that the pair (Br*(E,c), L(Bo(X))) is a complete invariant of the countable Borel equivalence relation E. v) We prove a Krieger type theorem, by showing that two aperiodic hyperfinite countable equivalence relations are isomorphic if and only if their associated Borel *-algebras Br*(E1) and Br*(E2) are isomorphic.
