The influence of the environment on the volume growth, stem form and disease tolerance of Eucalyptus grandis clones in the summer rainfall areas of South Africa

Pierce, Brian Thomas 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A thesis undertaken to quantify genotype-by-environment interaction within Eucalyptus grandis clones growing in the eastern portion of South Africa. Thirty one sites were selected to represent the "traditional" E. grandis growing areas of South Africa. Eleven common macro- site variables and twelve common micro- site soil variables were recorded at each site. Twenty seven E. grandis clones and four E. grandis hybrid clones were then evaluated over these 31 sites. An incomplete latin square design was used to evaluate the 31 test clones, and five E. grandis controls were incorporated into the trial design to link the 31 sites. Volume production, stem form, stem defects and survival were assessed at two and five years, as well as the disease infestation of three stem cankers at five years. The analytical methods which were used to evaluate and quantify the GEl portion of the study are the analysis of variance (ANOV A), correlation analysis, and joint regression analysis (IRA) together with the analysis of co-variance (ACOV AR). The growth-site association for volume production, stem form and Endothia disease infestation were investigated using factor analysis (FA), and equations derived for the species and for the individual clones using a stepwise multiple regression approach. GEl, as evaluated through JRA, revealed that an increase in site productivity lead to a positive linear response in productivity on a clonal level, and that there was a diverging or fanning pattern among the regression lines of the clones. This tendency was also observed for both the stem form and the Endothia infestation. Hence, no significant changes in the rankings of the clones were found, and only relevant differences between the clones were found to change significantly. Juvenile-mature genetic correlations for volume production and the stem form showed moderate (rg = 0,66 and rg = 0,70) correlations between the two and the five year assessments. On a species level, rainfall was the main environmental factor responsible for volume production, while latitude was the main influence on stem form and Endothia infestation. On an individual clone basis, some micro-site soil factor interaction within the clones was found for the growth-site response models. Sleutelwoorde: Eucalyptus grandis, Genotipe-omgewingsinteraksie, klone, groeiplek faktore, groeiplek reaksie, ANOY A, ACOY AR, FA, JRA

A fibre optimisation index developed from a material investigation of Eucalyptus grandis for the Kraft pulping process.

Du Plessis, Marius 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (For))--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A primary reason for the existence of the forest industry is to provide a renewable and natural resource for much needed timber and fibre products. Substantial improvements in management practices are required to increase forest volume and pulp yields for increased demand. Eucalyptus grandis clonal trees of age 6.75 years, grown in a Nelder 1a spacing experiment, were sampled and analysed to describe the effect of planting density on i) growth and yield, ii) wood properties and iii) pulp and paper quality. The main objective was to populate a fibre productivity index (FPI) which would be suitable from technical and economical perspectives. A material study was conducted on the wood and in addition, two methods were developed to further describe the variability of the forest resource to i) separate growth rings by means of wood density peaks from gamma-ray densitometry and ii) calibrate near infrared (NIR) prediction models. The results indicated that planting density did not influence the variability of wood density but mechanisms affecting available soil water are important. NIR prediction models were developed to rapidly and reliably assess wood properties on a non-destructive basis. The validation models for wood density, total pulp yield, kappa number and insoluble lignin returned high predictive ability. When applied to predict chemical properties from an independent data set, the outcomes were accurate in comparison with measured data. Growth and yield functions were developed for tree survival, dominant height and basal area. They accurately predicted outcomes as demonstrated by the goodness of fit and their logical behaviour tested over the range of planting densities. When the most extreme stand density treatments, 6809 and 275 trees per hectare (TPH) were evaluated for wood and fibre properties, the larger trees grown at 275 TPH, produced wood of better quality for pulp processing; basic wood density at 0.520 g cm–3 (21 % higher), fibre cell wall thickness at 2.10 μm (18.6 % thicker) and fibre lumen diameter at 8.16 μm (9.9 % lower) than for 6809 TPH. Intra-specific tree variability of wood and product properties increased from diameter at breast height (DBH) to 35 % and then decreased to 65 % of tree height. The effect of planting density was carried throughout the product value chain up to the paper manufacturing phase. Paper with higher bulk mass and thickness and more porous sheets is most likely to be made from lower planting densities (801 and 275 TPH), and stronger, smoother and denser paper is most likely to be made with trees at high planting densities (6809 or 2336 TPH). From the growth and yield and materials investigation, technical indicators identified to populate a fibre productivity index were: i) mean annual increment (MAI) as a forestry growth indicator, ii) wood density, summarising the composition of wood and, iii) pulp yield, the indicator of the amount of fibre processed through a chemical cooking process. Delivered cost of timber to the mill, was identified as the most suitable economic indicator which included fixed costs elements, variable costs and aspects of mill efficiency. The product of the technical and economic indicators concluded in a profit/loss scenario of producing 1 ton of pulp was deemed the best index to describe the entire and integrated value chain. This index, termed the Fibre Productivity Index (FPI) at the Mill, denoted as FPMill, is an integrated index that is easy to interpret in the realms of a forestry - pulp manufacturing, and can be used for differential pricing of timber for wood quality.

Establishment of a model pathosystem and analysis of the molecular plant-pathogen interaction between Eucalyptus grandis and Puccinia psidii Winter

Leite, Thiago Falda 17 May 2012 (has links)
More than 20 million hectares are destined to Eucalyptus plantations worldwide and Brazil has the second largest planted area. The International Eucalyptus Genome Network, EUCAGEN, was created in 2007 in order to perform genomic research on Eucalyptus. Brazil provided the biological material from the model tree (Brasuz) to have the complete genome sequenced and the first sequences were released to the scientific community in 2011. During Eucalyptus development, it is constantly exposed to pathogen attack with one of the most threatening diseases being eucalyptus rust caused by the neotropical rust fungus Puccinia psidii Winter which is rapidly spreading around the world and was recently described in Australia. In order to try and understand the molecular plant-microbe interaction between E. grandis and P. psidii we have to create a model system by isolating the pathogen from a single pustle and select resistant and susceptible plants from half-sib population generated using Brasuz as the pollen receptor. We performed light and epifluorescence microscopy analyses, identified all of the stages of the fungal development and recognized the moment which the resistant genotype blocks pathogen development. Based on these results we selected six time points to carry out transcriptomic analysis. Using RNA-Seq analysis we were able to verify large differences in transcriptional profile between resistant and susceptible plants and identify genes known involved in plant defense response such as LRR recptor Kinase, transcription factors (WRKY, MYBS and GRAS), TIR-NBS-LRR Proteins, Woundinduced protein and proteins involved in protein degradation (F-Box). Comparing microscopy and transcriptomic results allowed us to propose a model to explain the molecular mechanism of resistance of Eucalyptus grandis to Puccinia psidii.

Lodo de esgoto em plantio de Eucalyptus grandis: produção de madeira e viabilidade econômica / Sewage sludge in planting Eucalyptus grandis: wood production and economic viability

Pires, Isabela Cristina Gomes 10 April 2015 (has links)
The sewage sludge (SS) applied in planted forest soils, based on the nitrogen criterion, may increase the production of wood without causing damage to the forest environment. However, there is a need for research to evaluate the use of nutrients contained in the SS and to recommend appropriate management regarding for its application on soil using mineral fertilizer supplements by aspects of productivity and economic. The objective were to analyze the effect of combinations of sewage sludge doses and nitrogen and phosphate mineral fertilizer on the production on dry matter content and wood production of Eucalyptus grandis at 95 months after planting, and to evaluate the economic viability of SS recommendation and its complementation with nitrogen and phosphate mineral fertilizer for the forest producer. The experiment was installed in a commercial area of Suzano, in Angatuba-SP, sludge doses are applying (0, 7.7, 15.4 and 23.1 Mg ha-1, dry base), and nitrogen mineral fertilizer (0; 46.9; 95.1 and 142 kg ha-1), phosphate (0, 27.7, 55.9 and 84 kg -1 P2O5), and potassium (175 kg ha-1 K2O for all treatments, due to the low content of this nutrient in SS); in a randomized block design in a factorial 4x4x4. For the specific purpose of this study, combinations were taken in doses of N and P and among all these SS doses were studied. The production of dry matter and wood, calculated by equation Smalian were determined from measurements collected at 95 months post-planting eucalyptus. The revenue and cost values were raised in the reference year 2013. For the evaluation of the economic viability, we used the method of annualized net present value (ANPV), considering 6 and 12% per year discount rates and that the forest producer would bear 0 or 100% of the cost of transport of sewage sludge. There was a linear effect of SS doses on the production of dry biomass of wood, bark, leaf and branches and wood volume. The dose of 23.1 Mg ha-1 SS, equivalent to 150% of SS dose recommended by the criterion nitrogen, provided the highest total dry matter, 187 Mg ha-1, and wood+bark of 173 Mg ha-1 and stem volume of 529 m3 ha-1, with average annual increment of 66 m3 ha-1 yr -1. When considering the criterion to the application of SS, based on N, and the forestry producer has borne all the shipping cost of this waste, it was observed that the highest economic return treatment was that using a dose of 15.4 Mg ha- 1 SS and 84 kg ha-1 P2O5 to 6% per year discount rate; and one that applied 7.7 Mg ha-1 SS and 28 kg ha-1 P2O5 to the interest discount rate to 12% per year rate. When the forest producer was exempted to pay the SS shipping cost, the most economically viable treatment was what used 15.4 Mg ha-1 doses of SS and 84 kg ha-1 P2O5 to 6 and 12% per year discount rates

Atividade de enzimas do metabolismo de compostos secundários comprometidos com o enraizamento \"in vitro\" de Eucalyptus grandis HILL ex MAIDEN / Enzyme activity of metabolism of secondary compounds related to in vitro rooting of Eucalyptus grandis HILL ex MAIDEN

Machado, Isaac Stringueta 18 November 1993 (has links)
This study constitutes a strategy in Plant Biotechnology with the purpose to investigate the regulating biochemical development of the cellular differentiation in the rooting process. Through plant tissue culture \"in vitro\" technique, clones of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden (GO 250, GO 682 e GO 669) selected at CEBTEC/USP, were micropropagated. In a preliminary study shoots were multiplied, followed by tests of media culture composition for shoot elongation and root initiation. Several possibilities and rates of plant growth regulators, indolilbutyric acid (IBA)/benzylaminopurine (BAP) were studied. The clones showed different anatomic-physiological behaviours (fresh and oven-dry weight; proteic content; epicormic shoots multiplication rates, elongation and rooting). The frequences of rooting were higher than those described by other authors. Some modifications in the composition of used cuIture media were also defined. Through kinetic experiments, induction and inhibition patterns of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and glucose 6- phosphate-dehydrogenase (G-6P-DH) important to the biossyntesis of flavonoid compounds were determined. They were considered as the main cofactors of endogenous auxins in the root stimulating complex. Although, the increasing exogenous supply of AIB resulted in higher rooting rates, the activities of PAl and G-6P-DH enzyme did not present alterations. However, it was also observed that shoots wich rooted, in the treatments, showed higher PAL activity. resulting in higher flux of phenylpropanoid metabolism during the rooting.

Produção e avaliação do desempenho de painéis de partículas de Eucalyptus grandis confeccionados com adição de casca de aveia / Production and performance evaluation of particleboard made from Eucalyptus grandis addition of oat hulls

Varanda, Luciano Donizeti 10 July 2012 (has links)
Wood-based panels have been widely used around the world, replacing solid wood in various segments of the industry, such as furniture, panels, structures and other building components. The large volume of waste generated by agro industry enables the development of alternative and sustainable materials, highlighting the particleboard. This paper presents a study about production and evaluation of particleboard of Eucalyptus grandis and oat hulls, bonded under pressure with two types of resins (polyurethane based on castor oil and urea formaldehyde). Physical-mechanical performance of the panels produced was evaluated based on ABNT NBR 14810:2006. A variance analysis (ANOVA) evaluated the factors influence: Eucalyptus grandis, with mass ratios of 70, 85 and 100%; oat hulls, in proportions of 15, 30 and 100%; adhesives, in proportions of 10, 12 and 14%, and the combination of both, in each of the response variables (physical and mechanical properties) evaluated. Results showed excellent physical-mechanical properties, in some cases much higher than national and international codes requirements. Thus, panel particles good performance was proved, in addition to its compatibility with applications in wood industries, such as furniture, panels, packaging and in building construction.

The growth response of Eucalyptus grandis x e. camaldulensis to salt stress, ectomycorrhizae and endomycorrhizae double colonisation

Hengari, Simeon Ngaitungue 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScFor (Forest and Wood Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / The study was undertaken to determine the potential physiological benefits to plants provided by the double colonisation of host plant roots by endomycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi, when growing under normal and under salt stress conditions. Plants of the Eucalyptus grandis x E. camaldulensis clone were grown in a sterile soil with 0 and 75 mM NaCl and with or without infection with the fungi Glomus etunicatum (an AM fungus) and Pisolithus tinctorius (an ECM fungus). The Eucalyptus clone formed both ECM and AM in single and double inoculation. The mycorrhizal symbiosis did not provide any nutritional benefits to the hosts. The double colonisation had no effect on plant growth under normal growth conditions while single colonisations of AM and ECM reduced growth. Double colonisation reduced host plant specific leaf mass by 12% and increased total leaf area by 43% compared with the control under these growth conditions. This colonisation also reduced photosynthesis per leaf area by 29% compared with the control. The reduced photosynthesis of the double colonisation did not result in reduced plant growth because these plants may have had a high total plant photosynthesis because of their large total leaf area. The double symbiosis however did not reduce salt stress when host plants were exposed to 75 mM NaCl, while the AM fungus increased plant dry weight by 13% compared to the control. AM and ECM colonisation in the double colonised roots under salt stress was decreased by 18 and 43% compared to that in plants under normal growth. The reduced colonisation may have reduced the fungi’s abilities to be beneficial to the host plant. The double symbiosis is recommended based on the documented positive effects of this symbiosis to plant growth and the considered possible long-term benefits to host plants growing in saline soils.

PROPRIEDADES FÍSICO-MECÂNICAS DE CHAPAS AGLOMERADAS PRODUZIDAS COM BAMBU, PINUS E EUCALIPTO. / PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF PARTICLEBOARD PRODUCED WITH BAMBOO, PINE AND EUCALYPT.

Morais, Weslley Wilker Corrêa 18 July 2011 (has links)
This study investigated the physical and mechanical properties of particleboards formed of bamboo (Bambusa tuldoides), pine (Pinus taeda) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus grandis) and their combinations. To this end, panels were made, defined by the use of each type of particle pure or mixed by two or three being set 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of dry weight proportion, totalling 36 panels. The physical tests performed were the moisture content, density, water absorption and thickness swelling and the mechanical were static bending, screw withdrawal and internal bond. In order to complement the study, non-destructive testing were performed by direct and indirect ultrasonic to obtain models relating destructive and nondestructive methods. The results were analysed by for simple correlation and regression. In general, homogeneous panels made of pine and eucalypt showed better results than pure bamboo. The inclusion of bamboo particles decreased, mainly, the mechanical properties of the panels. All particleboard were below the minimum standards in physical and mechanical tests, only internal bond in panels pure pinehad higher values than commercial standards. Treatments using a combination of all species were compared, graphically, and resulted in lower than homogeneous panels of bamboo, for water absorption after two and twenty four hours and swelling after two hours. However, showed superior performance in swelling in thickness after twenty four hours, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in static bending, screw withdrawal and internal bond. The non-destructive direct method showed better correlations than the indirect one. The significant correlations of the direct dynamic modulus of elasticity, in order of significance, occurred with board density, screw withdrawal, and static modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity.

Batista, Wagner Roberto, 1975- January 2008 (has links)
Nowadays, this technique is very used in soil physics and irrigation system, to the monitoring of moisture in the soil. To this study, two species of commercial woods were used, the Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis and the Grevillea robusta (Cunn.), these woods come from the municipal district of Cabrália Paulista-SP and Duartina-SP. To each specie, were chosen in a casual way, 11 trees. They were dejected, planked in logs of 3,0m and referred to the sawmill, the place where was realized the process of unfolding the wood in boards by the system of tangential section. The boards brung up the ply of 28mm and the width of 24cm. Next, were chosen again, in a casual way, 11 planks that were unrolled in plastic just to avoid the waterless, and referred to the lab. When were obtained the appropriate samples to the evaluation, they were, in an initial instant, measure out and dry in an electric greenhouse of a temperature of 40 oC. To Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis, the dry process started with a media moisture of 101,45% and finished with 7,36% of moisture. To the other specie, the Grevillea robusta (Cunn.), the initial media moisture found was 125,88% and the final was 6,62%. During the whole dry process, the moisture was determinated, periodically, throw the masses current, as like the relative dielectric constant by the TDR. To the study of the feasibility of TDR in the determination of moisture in woods, was chosen to establish 3 distances among the sensor's stick: 10mm, 20mm and 30mm (these distances were applied in commercial resistive gauges too). In the same way, it was established the variations in the velocity of propagation of electromagnetic pulses send out from TDR equipment... FATOR DE CUBICAÇÃO PARA MADEIRA EMPILHADA DE Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, COM TORETES DE DOIS COMPRIMENTOS, E SUA VARIAÇÃO COM O TEMPO DE EXPOSIÇÃO AO AMBIENTE / FACTOR OF CUBICATION OF STACKS OF WOOD OF Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, WITH WOOD PIECES CUT IN TWO DIFERENT LENGHTS, AND ITS VARIATION WITH THE TIME OF EXPOSITION TO THE ENVIROMENT

Barros, Marcos Vinicios 30 October 2006 (has links)
The express wood volume in meter estere (mst) sometimes need to be converted into cubical meters (m3). This is possible estimating a cubication factor (Fc). With the objective to determine the Fc for Eucalyptus grandis and its variation in pieces of wood of different lengths of 1 and 2,3m of length in reason of the time of exposure to the enviroment, in the summer and the winter. Six stacks of wood pieces 3X2X1m (width, height and depth) dimensions had been prepared and six stacks of wood pieces in the dimensions 3X2X2,3m, installed in the summer and winter. The Fc was obtained by volume reason, with CV of 4,2 to 9,5% and by angular counting with CV of 10,9 to 17%. Thus, continued analysis with Fc s average obtained by reason of volumes because they had presented minor variation. The analysis statistics for factorial experiment(2X2X6), indicated significant difference (α<5%) in the variations of principal effect, that is, in the climatic station (F=18,72) , in the time of exposure (F=6,51) and in the length of the different pieces of wood (F=35,18) .The analysis of the correlation of Pearson indicated that the Fc was also influenced by the cracks on top, the humidity of the wood and the atmospheric variable, in the two observed seasons. Evidenced variation of the Fc of the stacks in exposition, equation with use of Stepewise procedure was shaped for the independent variable: T, T2, T3, T4, T5, 1/T, 1/T2, 1/T3, 1/T4, 1/T5, log(T), log(1/T), log(lnT), 1/lnT, 1/log(T), the equation with the best adjustment was decurrent of short pieces of wood of winter for an initial period until 90 days after installation. Adjusted the equation Fc=0,70385+0,00000961(T2), with values of F and R2 equal 17,22 (Pr>F=0,2%) e 0,63, respectively. However the averages of the value of the Fc obtained by observation and the estimator are the same (0,74) and the model was more accurate, then was opted to using the average gathered by each month. The conversion chart of the volume estere in cubical volume was completed since specific average values of the Fc for the climatic stations summer and winter and for the two lengths of pieces of wood, obtained by reason of volumes. The average values of the Fc s had indicated a stabilization after ninety days of the installation of the stacks, with this subdivided the time of exposure in two periods: one from zero to ninety days and another one from ninety to one hundred and eighty days, these compared with the total of the observations (180 days), the average values of these observations had not presented significant difference by the Tukey test (α<5%). However, pieces of wood of Eucalyptus grandis had presented dimensional variation when displayed in inclement weather for a period of one hundred and eighty days (six months) making the cubication factor Fc to vary in elapsing of the period of exposition.
