Thus Says The Lord: A Trinitarian Account of Biblical Authority

English, JT 31 March 2015 (has links)
One of the most important distinguishing marks of the Christian faith is that it is a revealed religion. The Christian faith professes that God has graciously and with authority revealed himself to his creatures. Therefore, the doctrine of Scripture, specifically biblical, is an issue of central importance in any theological formulation that is distinctly Christian. Despite the centrality of biblical authority in the system of Christian faith, there is perhaps no other doctrine under greater reproach. In light of the increased criticism of the doctrine of Scripture, Christians have adopted various theologies of revelation in order to explain what the biblical text is, how it relates to God, and how it functions authoritatively. And yet many of these proposals fail to take advantage of the resources provided by the communicative categories of the rich Christian trinitarian tradition. Specifically, very few evangelical proposals related to biblical authority consider how the specific modes of subsistence related God the Father (unbegottenenss), God the Son (eternal begottenenss), and God the Holy Spirit (procession) contribute to a Christian understanding of divine authorship. This dissertation is an exercise in dogmatic and exegetical theology that gives an account of the relationship between biblical authority and trinitarian communicative activity. This dissertation will argue that the Bible is authoritative because it has God the Father as its source, God the Son as the content and mediator of the Father's speech, and God the Spirit as the efficacious power who speaks the Word that he receives from the Father and Son. Therefore, Scripture is authoritative because God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit all speak, with one voice, an authoritative Word.

Pros and cons of CLA consumption: an insight from clinical evidences

Benjamin, Sailas, Prakasan, Priji, Sreedharan, Sajith, Wright, Andre-Denis G., Spener, Friedrich January 2015 (has links)
This comprehensive review critically evaluates whether supposed health benefits propounded upon human consumption of conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) are clinically proven or not. With a general introduction on the chemistry of CLA, major clinical evidences pertaining to intervention strategies, body composition, cardio-vascular health, immunity, asthma, cancer and diabetes are evaluated. Supposed adverse effects such as oxidative stress, insulin resistance, irritation of intestinal tract and milk fat depression are also examined. It seems that no consistent result was observed even in similar studies conducted at different laboratories, this may be due to variations in age, gender, racial and geographical disparities, coupled with type and dose of CLA supplemented. Thus, supposed promising results reported in mechanistic and pre-clinical studies cannot be extrapolated with humans, mainly due to the lack of inconsistency in analyses, prolonged intervention studies, follow-up studies and international co-ordination of concerted studies. Briefly, clinical evidences accumulated thus far show that CLA is not eliciting significantly promising and consistent health effects so as to uphold it as neither a functional nor a medical food.

A Theological Reassessment and Reformulation of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy in Light of Contemporary Developments

Brown, Derek James 16 May 2014 (has links)
Chapter 1 introduces the thesis, methodology, and outline of the dissertation. It also includes a brief historical survey of the doctrine of inerrancy and a study of the factors that led to the formation of the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy (hereafter, ICBI) and original writing of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy (hereafter, CSBI). The final section of this chapter examines the initial usefulness of the CSBI among evangelicals. Chapter 2 traces the developments that occurred within evangelicalism with regard to the doctrine of inerrancy immediately after the formation of the ICBI and the writing of the CSBI. This study is followed by an examination of major contemporary developments concerning the doctrine of inerrancy. In this latter section, the works of several important evangelical scholars who have recently attempted to reframe the inerrancy debate are examined and assessed in order to demonstrate the resilience of the CSBI and note the areas that require reformulation. Chapter 3 begins a three-part reassessment and reformulation section in which the CSBI's nineteen articles of affirmation and denial are studied in their original context and in light of the contemporary challenges examined in chapter 2. Chapter 3 examines specifically Articles I-V. These articles deal chiefly with matters related to the doctrine of revelation. Chapter 3 offers several modifications to these existing articles as well as proposing two new articles. Chapter 4 is the second part of the reassessment and reformulation section. This section comprises and examination of Articles VI-XII. These articles deal primarily with matters related to the doctrines of inspiration and inerrancy. This chapter examines these articles in their original context, offers several modifications to the existing articles, and proposes the addition of two new articles. Chapter 5 is the final part of the reassessment and reformulation section. This section examines Articles XII-XIX. These articles deal mainly with miscellaneous issues related to the doctrine of inerrancy. Chapter 5 examines these articles in their original context, offers several modifications to these existing articles, and proposes the addition of two new articles. Chapter 6 is the concluding chapter in which I summarize my research and offer suggestions for future studies in this vital area. I recommend that a new group of evangelicals gather together to reconsider the CSBI as it currently stands and use the work provided in this dissertation to begin a conversation toward a revised statement.

Kontrabanda ir neteisėtas prekių ar produkcijos neišvežimas ir LR baudžiamosios atsakomybės už šiuos nusikaltimus sąlygos / Smuggling and illegal non-exportation of goods or production from the republic of Lithuania and conditions for prosecution for such type of crimes

Lemežonaitė, Loreta 25 January 2008 (has links)
Economical crimes, such as smuggling or illegal non-exportation of goods or production from the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, causes substantial losses to the financial system of the Republic of Lithuania and European Union. Such crimes are committed with the aim to avoid payable taxes, thus selling goods in the market at lower prices. Such activity causes losses for legally operating companies, which pay all the taxes. In order to have the grounds for prosecution, it is essential to determine objective and subjective evidences of criminal act defined in the disposition of the special part of Criminal Code of the Republic of Lithuania (CCRL). The person cannot be prosecuted for smuggling and illegal non-exportation of goods and production from the Republic of Lithuania, when even one of the prerequisite evidences of criminal act, which are defined in articles 199 or 200 of CCRL, is not identified in the person’s activity. In this topic the evidences of criminal act, which are defined in articles 199 and 200 of CCRL and which are important for initiating prosecution for smuggling and illegal non-exportation of goods and production from the Republic of Lithuania, as well as the problems arising with proper incrimination of these evidences, are discussed.

The Islamic theory of justice, al-Qada, and the early practice of this institution up to the end of the Umayyad period (132 A.H. / 750 A.D)

Al-Humaidan, Humaidan Abdullah January 1974 (has links)
In order to understand Islamic legal theory it is important that we study it in the light of the practice which preceded its formation. By studying the relation between the later theory and the practice during the early period of. Islam we will be able to determine the influences on this. theory in its background and development. The present thesis is an attempt to answer a question about this relation between the legal theory and the-preceding practice in one branch of the legal theory. This branch is the Islamic legal theory of the administration of justice al-Qada. The question posed in the thesis is this: Did the theory of the administration in the second and third centuries A. H. express the natural historical development of the Islamic practice of this institution from the time of its introduction until the end of the Umayyad period (when Islamic institutions began to be analysed and discussed) or, on the other hand did Muslim scholars construct the theory in opposition to the actual practice, thereby avoiding any influence from that practice,

Įrodymų vertinimas baudžiamajame procese / The Evaluation of Evidences in Criminal Procedure

Žilys, Vaidotas 25 January 2008 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The topic of the final paper is “The Evaluation of Evidences in Criminal Procedure”. The evaluation of evidences is “the soul” of the averment procedure. Right evaluation of evidences has a direct influence for a court in finding objective truth in a criminal case and in decreeing rightly on a person’s culpability, thus, it has been one of the most important objects of scientific discussion in Criminal Procedure Law at all times. After the new Code of Criminal Procedure (hereafter – CCP) has entered into force, the theory of evidences covering the evaluation of evidences that was prevailing for a long time does not meet the topicality of today any more. The evaluation of evidences has become an exceptional prerogative of court, thus there has been an attempt to find out how the facts are being evaluated along the whole averment procedure and to analyze relevant topicality of evidence evaluation. For this reason an empirical research has been carried out that covered the analysis of 187 criminal cases with 262 episodes involved, as well as 33 decisions to nonsuit pretrial investigation have been examined. In order to reveal a relevant concept of evidence evaluation the final paper analyses the provisions of CCP being in force and the conclusion has been made that the rules of law that are presented in CCP and define evidence and averment are exceptional and not reasoned in Lithuanian legal system. The validation of facts to be evidences is the result that is achieved after... [to full text]

Between freedom and givenness: (a study of the hermeneutical consequences of the concept of canon for the authority of scripture)

Latham, Jonathan Cyril January 1990 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to arrive at an understanding of the authority of scripture that is able to accommodate both a faith perspective and the fruits of the historical-critical approach to the New Testament. Put differently, the aim of this thesis is the pursuit of a specifically christian, faith-promoting, reading of the New Testament whilst still enjoying the benefit, in an as uncompromised a form as possible, of the historical- critical approach. In a sense it may be said that this task, given that the roots of both the historical-critical approach and modern Western culture are deeply imbedded in Rationalism, is equivalent to the basic hermeneutical question of whether it is possible to interpret scripture relevantly from within a cultural web of meaning that does not readily accommodate that embodied in the New Testament. In section one of this dissertation we present a characteristic depiction, based on the historical-critical theory of literature, of the authority of the New Testament. This is followed by a brief assessment that makes explicit why the historical- critical approach is not conducive to the adoption of a faith perspective on these writings. In section two, still and inevitably based on critical foundations, we adopt a perspective that is more sympathetic to faith and that seeks to discover in the concerns evidenced in the canonical process, when traditions about Jesus gradually took on more complex and stable forms, culminating in the canon of the New Testament, guidelines in helping us to deal with the problem with which this study is concerned . In the specific example of the rather ordinary concerns underlying the unusual history of the pericope de adultera (John 7:53-8:11), examined against the background of the interests underlying the canonical process, it becomes clear that christians from the very beginning faced a dilemma not unlike that with which the historical-critical approach confronts us. They had to interpret afresh, and faithfully, the traditions in order to meet the demands of situations that had never been foreseen by earlier tradents. In this respect, therefore, the history of the pericope de adultera presents us with an ongoing struggle to hold in tension the demands of new contexts with the imperative of strict continuity with Jesus. In section three, on the basis of the foundation of the authority of scripture in strict continuity with Jesus combined with the contextual reinterpretation of the tradition, the social sciences are employed. Using the social sciences, it is discovered that the two contradictory approaches that we wish to reconcile form part of two different models for interpreting reality. It is on this basis, and made possible by the common culture underlying these opposing models and by the common contact with an unspecified common core of concrete reality, that a solution is proposed in terms of a complex 'fusion of horizons', promoted by a 'precipitative environment'. In the conclusion our solution is decisively aligned with the concerns evidenced in the canonical process

Trust-based service selection and recommendation for online software marketplaces – TruSStReMark

Pileththuwasan Gallege, Lahiru Sandakith 05 December 2016 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation proposes a framework (TruSStReMark - Trust-based Service Selection and Recommendation for Online Software Marketplaces) to model, quantify, and monitor trust of software services and to perform trust-based service selection and recommendations. It provides methods to analyze and aggregate external reviews, pertaining to specific QoS attributes, of software services by performing subjective logic-based operations. This framework, first, defines trust of a software service using theory of belief and extends the multi-level software specifications to represent the trust-based attributes. It, then, proposes enhancements to two prevalent algorithms for selecting and recommending software services from a marketplace. Finally, the performances of the enhanced selection and recommendation algorithms are improved by parallelizing them. When compared with the prevalent Content-based and Collaborative filtering-based approaches, the results show that, the TruSStReMark is able to produce better results in terms of quality measured using HR (Hit Ratio) and ARHR (Average Reciprocal Hit-Rank) metrics. In addition, the parallelized versions of the trust-based selection and recommendation algorithms improve the end-to-end runtime. The TruSStReMark will enable users to select services, which are trustworthy, from online software marketplaces and use them in composing quality-aware distributed systems.

Stylometry and Wordprints: A Book of Mormon Reevaluation

Roberts, Brian Curtis 01 January 1983 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is a project which investigates the science of stylometry and wordprints; the analysis of writing style characteristics. The focus is placed on reexamining a wordprint study done by Wayne Larsen and Alvin Rencher wherein the Book of Mormon was analyzed against texts by those who are purported to have written it. The difference in this study from the first was that new wordprint definitions were developed using a junction grammar program created by Eldon Lytle, the 1830 edition of the Book of Mormon was employed as the base text, the phrase "it came to pass" was deleted and the texts used in analysis were divided into narrative and discourse groups and analyzed separately. The results of the thesis show conclusively that the idea of wordprints being able to identify uniqueness in authors is indeed valid. The tests on the control groups show this. This was then applied to the Book of Mormon authors and a test made which was significant; indicating that no one individual could have authored the text. This was true not only for the wordprint as defined in the Larsen/Rencher study, but for each new definition derived from the junction grammar program. Other tests were performed which showed that Joseph Smith could not have authored any part of the Book of Mormon.
