Lindberg, Magnus January 2008 (has links)

How to reveal people's preferences: Comparing time consistency and predictive power of multiple price list risk elicitation methods

Csermely, Tamás, Rabas, Alexander 10 1900 (has links) (PDF)
The question of how to measure and classify people´s risk preferences is of substantial importance in the field of Economics. Inspired by the multitude of ways used to elicit risk preferences, we conduct a holistic investigation of the most prevalent method, the multiple price list (MPL) and its derivations. In accordance with previous literature, we find that revealed preferences differ under various and even the same versions of the MPL. Thus, an arbitrary selection of a particular risk assessment method can lead to biased results especially if researchers investigate its connection to other phenomena. In order to resolve this issue, we determine the most stable version of the MPL by using multiple measures of within-method consistency, and the version with the highest forecast accuracy by using behavior in two economically relevant games as benchmarks. A derivation of the well-known method by Holt and Laury (2002), where the highest payoff is varied instead of probabilities, emerges as the best MPL method in both dimensions. / Quantum mechanics is one of the areas of physics that emerged in mid-1900 and remains in development to the current day. Several technological devices are a result of this important branch of physics that also helps to Medicine, Mathematics, Philosophy, Literature and Biology. Therefore, it is essential that contact with this science occurs at the high school level, what actually occurs in a limited way, when it happens. To place the student in the world of quantum mechanics, that is, the infinitely small of physics, the student must leave the classical thought and think in terms of the quantum behavior and indeterminacy in the measurement process, namely to develop the capacity for abstraction. This is accurately the aim of this work. Thus, the double-slit experiment that lets you work with the wave-particle duality of the electron and the photon was chosen. Through this experiment, students can be gradually inserted on a path toward quantum description necessary for the examination of subatomic phenomena. The experimental analysis is carefully performed with the aid of virtual laboratories, available for free in electronic sites, which represent a resource to perform experimental procedures that would require large laboratory apparatus. The double slit experiment is analyzed in the following three steps, reported: (i) the slit paired with classical particles; (ii) the double slit and with classical waves; (iii) the double slit with quantum objects such as electrons and photons. The goal is to demonstrate the electron dual behavior. Later to complete accurately and justify the electron quantum behavior shows the principle of indeterminacy of Heisenberg and its philosophical implications. Thus, the main objective of this research is to seek to integrate quantum behavior, which takes place at the atomic scale, especially in the high school level. Some guidance on how to apply this work in other levels of education appear throughout the text and in the appendices. Introducing the dual behavior wave-particle, the electron, the probabilistic interpretation and the uncertainty principle. We believe that students will be able to understand a number of phenomena that occurs on scales that are not the classical mechanics of the domain when in contact with these topics. This topic is part of the contemporary modern physics content that is being addressed in texts and entrance exam books. In addition, some of the new technologies using quantum physics, from electronic microscopes, nanotechnology, quantum computing, semiconductors, diodes (including LED), transistors, computers, tablets, GPS, satellites, radar, aircraft, lasers, code scanners bars, military defense systems, CD and Blu-Ray players, encryption, photoelectric cells, various sensors, basically, everything is electronic. One of the goals of the work is to check what prior knowledge the student body has, before contact with quantum physics content, so the part of common sense on this issue. In addition, we intend to verify that the student is able to: i) distinguish, at the end of the application of this research, that the laws of physics at atomic scales are different from the laws of classical physics, ii) the importance of quantum mechanics in technology and society.

The Relationship Between Brand Related UGC and CBBE : An Internet Meme Experiment

Hallgren, Joseph, Sigurbjörnsson, Kristján, Black Jr., Twan January 2018 (has links)
Background: The modern day era of the Internet gave birth to the growing phenomenon of Internet memes (IM), a type of online user generated content (UGC) (Gangadharbatla, 2008). Now marketers have begun researching the relationship between UGC and consumer based brand equity (CBBE) (Christodoulides et.al, 2012; Rachna and Khajuria, 2017). The problem discussion presents the issue of the diminishing control of brand equity due to the rise of UGC and lack of research on how to manage its influence (Morrison et al., 2013). Leading to the purpose of this thesis, which is to determine the impact Internet memes have on consumer based brand equity. Literature: The review presents two leading contributors to the field, Aaker’s (1991) framework on the different dimensions of CBBE and Keller’s (1993) definition of the concept. In addition recent studies on UGC and brand equity provided the basis for hypothesis development. Method: This thesis assumed a deductive research approach, developing the hypothesis from current literature in the field. A quantitative study, that utilized an explanatory research approach, because it best suited the experimental design. As for the data collection method, surveys were considered (Saunders et al., 2016), which the authors designed as a self-completion questionnaire and pre-tested (Bryman and Bell, 2015). Convenience sampling was chosen to select participants (Hernon, 2004). Construct and content validity was used along with homogeneity and stability to control reliability and measure the quality of research instruments (Bryman and Bell, 2015). SPSS version 25 was used to conduct all statistical analyses. Results: Four hypotheses were developed, to measure the effect of the independent variable IM on each of the four CBBE dimensions. To summarize, three of the hypothesis (H1, H3 and H4) were rejected as the difference in the means are not significant enough and can be explained by chance. The effect on brand association (H2) was however found to be significant therefore H2 was accepted.

Guggenberger, Johan January 2018 (has links)

Piotr Kowalski (1927-2004) : l'artiste chercheur et ses outils d’art / Piotr Kowalski (1927-2004) : the reseacher artist and his art tools

Villatte, Oriane 16 December 2013 (has links)
Piotr Kowalski’s (1927-2004) artistic approach is a distinctive body of work. Mathematician, scientist and then architect, Piotr Kowalski focuses from the 60s on sculpture and creates “art tools” materializing laws of physics or ways of thinking. His “virgins maker machines” influence the cognitive part of the viewers by directly experimenting a knowledge. Piotr Kowalski’s approach breaks with the romantic idea of the lonely isolated artist in his workshop. Convinced that sculpture must be made with contemporary means, he works in factories and laboratories, where he implements innovative processes. This attitude enable to bring together art, science and technical knowledge. Piotr Kowalski’s career is the symbol of fourty years of creation and institutional changes. Exhibited in the most prestigious institutions (Kunsthalle in Bern, Guggenheim Museum, Stedelijk Museem, Moderna Musset, Musée National d’Art Moderne), Piotr Kowalski also takes part in the great changes of the French art landscape (Beaubourg, la Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, la Défense, les villes nouvelles). Through a themed timeline experience, this critical monograph tends to restore the importance of his work, often reduced to themed art and sciences, or even worth to technological art. The thesis presents the first catalogue raisonné including his non finalized work projects.
