Determinants of employment in the Platinum mining industry in South Africa

Khoza, Nyiko January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (M. Com. (Economics)) -- University of Limpopo, 2017 / The study intends to investigate the determinants of employment in the platinum mining industry in South Africa. Employment levels decreased dramatically in the platinum mining industry in South Africa. This is due to decrease in export demand for platinum, high operating cost, labour unrest, low levels of production and other determinants of employment. The specific objective of the study is to determine the nexus between employment, output, domestic demand and export demand. Annual time series data covering the period between 1992-2013 was used. The study employed the Vector Error Correction Model approach. Johansen Cointegration test results confirmed the existence of a long run relationship amongst variables under investigation. Export demand and output are found to be positively related with employment. The speed of adjustment to equilibrium is -0.283202. Impulse response functions and variance decomposition are also generated to explain the response to shock amongst variables. The results of the study vindicate that the platinum mining industry should implement policies and strategies to increase output which will lead to higher levels of employment as well as economic growth. In addition, government should also create a conducive environment to enable the industry to expand and the industry should also intensify its export drive, these findings are envisaged to contribute significantly to the existing but limited literature on the subject under investigation. / National Research Foundation

The Patterns and Determinants of Roundwood Exports from United States Pacific Northwest

Ban, Bibek 03 May 2019 (has links)
The Forest Resource Conservation and Shortage Relief Act of 1990 was the first federal attempt to impose a blanket restriction on export of roundwood to conserve existing forest cover and generate economic benefits from exporting processed wood. This study estimates the export demand equation for total export from United States Pacific Northwest, major species and destination countries using Johansen multivariate time series analysis. Cointegration rank is identified using Johansen cointegration test incorporating a structural breaks and normalized restriction is imposed to predict demand function under the framework of vector error correction model. All the variables under study are statistically significant with expected signs in the long run demand estimates. Roundwood export restriction policies are found to have impacted the export demand equation negatively. The study helps to understand the impact of log export restrictions policies along with other economic variables and assist in future policy formulations.

Equações de oferta e demanda por exportações do Brasil: um estudo comparativo do setor de madeira e móveis

Made available in DSpace on 2015-03-05T18:57:20Z (GMT). Outro resultado importante, agora no lado da oferta por exportações, mostra a relação / This dissertation is about the estimation of export equations for both Brazilian total economy and Brazilian wood-furniture sector, using quarterly data, from 1985 to 2006. The econometric procedures use the Johansen’s co-integration concept associated to an error-correction model. Special attention is dedicated to a possible problem of instability in parameters resulting, mainly, from the impact of the opening trade in the beginning of the period, from changes associated to the Real Plan and from the raise of the export prices in the end of the period. One of the most interesting aspects, related to the Brazilian trade opening, occurs in the export demand where the foreign income starts to have relatively higher importance along the period when compared to the exchange rate. This change is present in the ambit of the wood-furniture sector, but it also stands out for the aggregate. Another important result, now related to export supply, shows the relation of significance between the main sources of exporter

International market selection-screening technique: replacing intuition with a multidimensional framework to select a short-list of countries

Gould, Richard Robert, RichardGould@ozemail.com.au January 2002 (has links)
The object of this research was to develop an international market screening methodology which selects highly attractive markets, allowing for the ranges in diversity amongst organisations, countries and products. Conventional business thought is that, every two to five years, dynamic organisations which conduct business internationally should decide which additional foreign market or markets to next enter. If they are internationally inexperienced, this will be their first market; if they are experienced, it might be, say, their 100th market. How should each organisation select their next international market? One previous attempt has been made to quantitatively test which decision variables, and what weights, should be used when choosing between the 230 countries of the world. The literature indicate that a well-informed selection decision could consider over 150 variables that measure aspects of each foreign market's economic, political, legal, cultural, technical and physical environments. Additionally, attributes of the organisation have not been considered when selecting the most attractive short-list of markets. The findings presented in the dissertation are that 30 criteria accounted for 95 per cent of variance at cross-classification rates of 95 per cent. The weights of each variable, and the markets selected statistically as being the most attractive, were found to vary with the capabilities, goals and values of the organisation. This frequently means that different countries will be best for different organisations selling the same product. A
