La presente ricerca di dottorato si propone di esaminare l’evoluzione della teologia politica bizantina e dei suoi riflessi nella propaganda imperiale nel periodo compreso tra il XIII e il XIV secolo, attraverso lo studio delle manifestazioni dell'ideologia nell'iconografia e nella numismatica del periodo in esame. L'intreccio interdisciplinare di questi ambiti di ricerca, iconografia e numismatica - con una metodologia innovativa, i cui risultati si profilano estremamente proficui - permette di comprendere i caratteri concreti, ma forse più reconditi, del realizzarsi dell'ideologia politica e della propaganda imperiale nell'impero bizantino ormai ridotto ad una costellazione di potentati particolari di estensione limitata. Il tema specifico di questo studio ha come oggetto alcune iconografie ritenute inedite, o meno tradizionali, nel panorama numismatico bizantino, emesse, in particolare, dalla zecca di Tessalonica tra XIII e XIV secolo, che vengono qui esaminate in funzione dell’evoluzione della rappresentazione imperiale. Tra di esse emerge l’inedita iconografia dell’imperatore pteroforo per la sua valenza di interscambiabilità semantica con l’immagine arcangelica. Lo studio si è proposto l’obiettivo principale di rintracciare elementi iconologici quanto più possibile comuni tra tutti i soggetti iconografici presi in esame, vagliando il substrato ideologico e propagandistico sotteso alla valenza iconologica per ogni tipologia numismatica. / The aim of the present PhD research is to analyze the byzantine political theology evolution and its effects on the imperial propaganda in the period between the XIII and XIV centuries through the study of the ideology’s evidences in iconography and numismatics during the examined period. The interdisciplinary connection of these fields of research - iconography and numismatics - with an innovative methodology, whose achievements are extremely satisfactory, allows to understand the specific characters, and perhaps the most recondite ones, of the political ideology and imperial propaganda development in the Byzantine Empire, now reduced into a constellation of different powers of limited extension. The specific topic of this study is about some iconographies considered unusual in the byzantine numismatic context and they are the subject of peculiar coins struck in the mint of Thessaloniki between the XIII and XIV century. In this study they are analyzed in the light of the imperial image’s evolution. Among them, the peculiar iconography of the winged emperor stands out for its semantic symbolism of interchangeability with the image of the archangel Michael. The study’s main aim is to find iconological elements shared between all the iconographic subjects studied, by analyzing the ideological and propagandistic base subtended to the iconology of each numismatic type examined.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the nature of quantum computation and the question of the quantum speed-up over classical computation by comparing two different quantum computational frameworks, the traditional quantum circuit model and the cluster-state quantum computer. After an introductory survey of the theoretical and epistemological questions concerning quantum computation, the first part of this thesis provides a presentation of cluster-state computation suitable for a philosophical audience. In spite of the computational equivalence between the two frameworks, their differences can be considered as structural. Entanglement is shown to play a fundamental role in both quantum circuits and cluster-state computers; this supports, from a new perspective, the argument that entanglement can reasonably explain the quantum speed-up over classical computation. However, quantum circuits and cluster-state computers diverge with regard to one of the explanations of quantum computation that actually accords a central role to entanglement, i.e. the Everett interpretation. It is argued that, while cluster-state quantum computation does not show an Everettian failure in accounting for the computational processes, it threatens that interpretation of being not-explanatory. This analysis presented here should be integrated in a more general work in order to include also further frameworks of quantum computation, e.g. topological quantum computation. However, what is revealed by this work is that the speed-up question does not capture all that is at stake: both quantum circuits and cluster-state computers achieve the speed-up, but the challenges that they posit go besides that specific question. Then, the existence of alternative equivalent quantum computational models suggests that the ultimate question should be moved from the speed-up to a sort of “representation theorem” for quantum computation, to be meant as the general goal of identifying the physical features underlying these alternative frameworks that allow for labelling those frameworks as “quantum computation”.

Questo lavoro trae spunto da un rinnovato interesse per l’«intuizione» e il «pensiero visivo» in matematica, e intende offrire un contributo alla discussione contemporanea su tali questioni attraverso lo studio del caso storico di Felix Klein. Dopo una breve ricognizione di alcuni dei saggi più significativi al riguardo, provenienti sia dalla filosofia della matematica, sia dalla pedagogia, dalle neuroscienze e dalle scienze cognitive, l’attenzione si concentra sulla concezione epistemologia di Klein, con particolare riferimento al suo uso del concetto di ‘intuizione’. Dai suoi lavori e dalla sua riflessione critica si ricavano non solo considerazioni illuminanti sulla fecondità di un approccio «visivo», ma argomenti convincenti a sostegno del ruolo cruciale dell’intuizione in matematica. / Arising from the renewed interest in ‘intuition’ and ‘visual thinking’ in mathematics, this work intends to take part to the contemporary debate on these topics by investigating the ‘historical case’ of Felix Klein. After a brief survey of studies both from philosophy of mathematics and from neuroscience, pedagogy, and cognitive sciences, that have contributed to such revival, the attention is focused on Klein’s epistemological views, with particular reference to his use of the concept of intuition. The analysis aims at clarifying how his reflections provide not only ingenious observations on the effectiveness of a ‘visual’ approach, but also convincing arguments to support the crucial role of intuition in mathematics.

Questa ricerca è un’indagine semasiologica del lessico agostiniano della provvidenza divina, costituito dalle parole-chiave prouidentia, prouideo, prouidens, prouidus, prouisio, prouisor, prouisus, e dai lessemi in relazione logico-sintattica diretta con esse. La prospettiva è sia sincronica (si considerano tutte le attestazioni delle parole-chiave presenti nel corpus agostiniano), sia diacronica: si soppesano di volta in volta analogie e differenze agostiniane rispetto agli antecedenti, nell’intento di arricchire il panorama dei possibili modelli lessicali latini (pagani, biblici, patristici) di Agostino. I dati lessicali sono stati raccolti in una banca dati appositamente costituita, selezionati secondo i criteri di frequenza e pregnanza semantica, e analizzati per nuclei tematici, coincidenti in parte con i capitoli della tesi. Si studiano dapprima i lessemi che esprimono il governo della provvidenza (le famiglie lessicali di administro, guberno e rego, e altri lessemi che designano l’azione della provvidenza); sono poi analizzati lessemi e iuncturae in cui prevale l’idea del mistero della provvidenza. Gli ultimi due capitoli sono dedicati al tema della cura divina, e a quello della cosiddetta “pedagogia divina”: attraverso i segni esteriori, la provvidenza ‘richiama’ l’uomo a rientrare in se stesso. Un’appendice approfondisce infine l’uso agostiniano di Sap 6,16 e Sap 8,1. L’apporto di Agostino al lessico filosofico latino va individuato a livello semantico più che nell’innovazione lessicale. Accanto a suffissazione, composizione, calco, la metafora svolge un ruolo essenziale nella formazione del lessico dell’Ipponate, e proviene spesso da altre lingue tecniche oppure è radicata nel patrimonio di immagini tradizionali della religione pagana. Il debito di Agostino è indubbiamente verso Cicerone, ma anche verso Seneca, per l’uso in ambito esistenziale-biografico di alcuni lessemi. Agostino li trasferisce però dal piano umano a quello divino, come nel caso del concetto di admonitio: parte integrante del programma filosofico senecano; ‘richiamo’ della provvidenza per Agostino, concetto che risente anche dell’apporto di retorica ed esegesi. / The dissertation is a semasiological investigation of Augustine’s vocabulary concerning Divine Providence. It comprises both the key-words prouidentia, prouideo, prouidens, prouidus, prouisio, prouisor, prouisus and the lexemes in a direct logic-syntactic relationship to the key-words. On the one hand, the synchronic analysis considers all the key-words’ attestations within Augustine’s corpus, on the other hand, analogies and differences between Augustine and previous authors are successively evaluated from a diachronic perspective, in order to widen the spectrum of Augustine’s possible Latin models (pagans, biblical, patristic). I have created a database to record the lexical data, selecting them according to the criteria of frequency and significance, organizing them by topics, corresponding in part to the dissertation’s chapters. The first section deals with lexemes that designate the idea of the governance of Providence (the families of administro, guberno, rego and some lexemes which express the action of Providence); moreover, lexemes and iuncturae signifying Providence as a mysterious presence are investigated. The last two chapters deal with the topic of benevolence and with the so-called “divine pedagogy”: through exterior signs, Providence “calls back” the human being to his interiority. A final appendix deals with Augustine’s use of Sap 6,16 and Sap 8,1. Augustine’s contribution to Latin philosophical vocabulary takes place on the semantic level rather than the lexical. Besides suffixation, composition, and calque, metaphors play a fundamental role in the composition of Augustine’s vocabulary. Metaphors are often derived from other technical languages, or they are based on traditional images of the pagan religion. Augustine is indebted to Cicero and also to Seneca for the biographical-existential meaning of some lexemes, though Augustine transfers them from the human level to the divine level. This becomes clear, e.g., with reference to the concept of admonitio, an integral part of Seneca’s philosophical program, but the Providence’s “recall” for Augustine.
