Sir David Lindsay of the Mount : political and religious culture in Renaissance Scotland

For too long Sir David Lindsay of the Mount has been almost the exclusive concern of literary critics and ecclesiastical historians. This thesis aims to demonstrate that Lindsay and his works represent an invaluable source for a much broader study of Renaissance Scotland and that placing each in a proper historical and cultural context sheds an important light on some of the ideas and attitudes which shaped Scotland's political and religious culture during this crucial period. The thesis falls into three sections. The first offers a detailed examination of Lindsay's career, tracing his arrival at Court, his experiences during the minority of 1513-28 and his employment as a herald. Looking at the events of the 1530s, it argues that Lindsay's position is best seen both in the light of a developing humanist- influenced court culture and the emergence of religious controversy. It is suggested that, following the death of James V, Lindsay was much less closely associated with the Court and that this had important consequences for his political, religious and poetic development. Part Two stresses the hitherto little appreciated point that Lindsay was very much a political writer. Analysing his discussion of government, the section looks in particular at ideas of kingship and commonweal, assessing the extent to which Lindsay variously questioned or endorsed traditional attitudes and assumptions. This also involves a study of Lindsay's position as court-poet and those occasions of public spectacle with which he was involved. Completing the examination of Lindsay and his works, the thesis turns to questions of religion. Arguing that his work represents a more complex, often more ambiguous, but ultimately more satisfying, source than is generally appreciated. Part Three considers Lindsay's religious attitudes, examining what his poetry can tell us concerning the situation in Scotland on the eve of the Reformation.

Language Choice in the ESL and FL Classrooms: Teachers and Students Speak Out

This paper compares English as a second language (ESL) and foreign language (FL) teachers' and students' perspectives regarding target language (TL) and first language (L1) use in the respective classrooms. Teachers and students were given questionnaires asking their opinions of a rule that restricts students' L1 use. Questionnaires were administered to 46 ESL students, 43 FL students, 14 ESL teachers, and 15 FL teachers in Texas secondary public schools. Results were analyzed using SPSS and R. Results demonstrated an almost statistical difference between perspectives of ESL and FL students regarding TL and L1 use, while teacher results demonstrated no statistical difference between the groups. Students had a more positive perspective of the rule than teachers.

The development of innovative applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is inseparable from the sharing of public data. However, as people strengthen their awareness of the protection of personal data privacy, it is more and more difficult to collect data from multiple data sources and there is also a risk of leakage in unified data management. But neural networks need a lot of data for model learning and analysis. Federated learning (FL) can solve the above difficulties. It allows the server to learn from the local data of multiple clients without collecting them. This thesis mainly deploys FL on the Raspberry Pi (RPi) and achieves federated averaging (FedAvg) as aggregation method. First in the simulation, we compare the difference between FL and centralized learning (CL). Then we build a reliable communication system based on socket on testbed and implement FL on those devices. In addition, the Paillier encryption algorithm is configured for the communication in FL to avoid model parameters being exposed to public network directly. In other words, the project builds a complete and secure FL system based on hardware. / Utvecklingen av innovativa applikationer för artificiell intelligens (AI) är oskiljaktig från delning av offentlig data. Men eftersom människor stärker sin medvetenhet om skyddet av personuppgiftsskydd är det allt svårare att samla in data från flera datakällor och det finns också risk för läckage i enhetlig datahantering. Men neurala nätverk behöver mycket data för modellinlärning och analys. Federated learning (FL) kan lösa ovanstående svårigheter. Det gör det möjligt för servern att lära av lokala klientdata utan att samla in dem. Denna avhandling använder huvudsakligen FL på Raspberry Pi (RPi) och uppnår federerad genomsnitt (FedAvg) som aggregeringsmetod. Först i simuleringen jämför vi skillnaden mellan FL och CL. Sedan bygger vi ett pålitligt kommunikationssystem baserat på uttag på testbädd och implementerar FL på dessa enheter. Dessutom är Paillier -krypteringsalgoritmen konfigurerad för kommunikation i FL för att undvika att modellparametrar exponeras för det offentliga nätverket direkt. Med andra ord bygger projektet ett komplett och säkert FL -system baserat på hårdvara.

Today, there are children sleeping under bridges with no food to eat and nowhere to go. Without our help someone's daughter will continue to cry herself to sleep as she sleeps in the woods with only a blanket, someone's son will feed himself with trash from a dumpster, someone's granddaughter sleeping under a bridge will be raped and someone's grandson will commit suicide because he lost all hope. These children need our help. (Enough is Enough, 2022). Although there are some government agencies and organizations that try to identify what can be done to help the homeless youth population, minimal progress is taking place. The United States Government and other organizations are offering some assistance, but more funding is needed to save the lives of this vulnerable population. In addition, homeless youth need to have available access and knowledge that these resources exist and are available to help them fully transition back into society. This study examined the growing reality of youth homelessness and the impact of interventions for housing, mental health, and substance use. The primary goal of this theses is to bring awareness and educate the public on the homeless youth crisis currently being faced throughout our country. In addition, the resource guide that was created with the research found from this study will be distributed in places homeless youth can access such as local schools, shelters, churches, police and fire stations, as well as online databases.
