The aim of this study was to explore how psychosocial lived experiences of taxi drivers explain accident involvement in Uganda. Face to face in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with six male taxi drivers who survived accidents while driving and still served as taxi drivers. The sample was identified with purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Ethical considerations were observed during data collection through transcription, analysis to the final compilation. Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) was employed to each participant’s discernment of the specific and general accounts of accident narratives in a bid to make "sense" of their lived worlds as drivers and accident involvement. Three superordinate themes illuminating accidents emerged out of the data: typical routines of taxi drivers; the socio-cultural context; and the taxi drivers’ community. These were discussed based on relevant theories and previous studies as well as pertinent concepts. Considering the study results, typical routines of taxi drivers, driver community factors and social/cultural factors affect each other, these together leave driver-accident involvement inevitable. Categorically such factors include; age, formal education, driving training, driver health status, domestic concerns, significant others, competitive driving / worse-worse, other road users, Impulsive pick and drop-off of passengers, theft, driver stress, state of the road, state of the vehicle among others. Thus behavioural and cognitive remedies are herein suggested towards ameliorative and/or transformative processes of the accident endemic.

Esta tese tem como finalidade propor um método de coleta, tratamento e análise de dados de acidentes de trânsito para aplicação no Brasil. Este método tem como um de seus objetivos reconhecer os fatores que contribuem para a ocorrência dos acidentes, visto que identificar as causas dos acidentes é fundamental na busca por soluções para o problema da acidentalidade. No Brasil as bases de dados de acidentes de trânsito são, em geral, estruturadas a partir dos registros policiais e carecem de informações adequadas para a análise da segurança viária. O método proposto neste trabalho permite registrar acidentes de modo a contemplar: as características do acidente, as circunstâncias do momento, a identificação e as características dos veículos e pessoas envolvidas. Além disso, o método permite relacionar essas informações com os fatores que contribuíram para a ocorrência dos acidentes. Nesse contexto, a criação de uma base de dados de acidentes e seus fatores contribuintes, vem suprir a carência de informações essenciais para o diagnóstico e encaminhamento de soluções adequadas para os problemas motivadores dos acidentes de trânsito. A proposta desta tese está baseada em uma abordagem que combina aspectos qualitativos e quantitativos, alinhada às melhores práticas internacionais na área de segurança viária. Como resultado do desenvolvimento do método, foram elaborados instrumentos de coleta de dados contendo um formulário, um manual e procedimentos para a coleta de dados. Como resultado da aplicação prática desses instrumentos, foi criada a estrutura de uma base de dados que permitiu a definição do método proposto para a análise das causas de acidentes de trânsito. Como meio de validar o método proposto, foi realizado um estudo aplicado e são apresentadas as análises de dados dos acidentes de trânsito observados. / This thesis has the purpose of presenting a method for collecting and processing data on traffic accidents to be applied in Brazil. This method aims to acknowledge the contributor factors for the occurrence of accidents, since identifying the causes of accidents is crucial on the search for effective solutions for the road safety problem. Traffic accidents database in Brazil are generally structured based on police reports, therefore lacking adequate information for the analyses of road safety. The method proposes a registry of the accidents comprising accident characteristics, scene circumstances, vehicle as well as involved people identification and characteristics. Moreover, it allows relating that information with the accident contributory factors. In this scenery, the creation of an accident database and its contributory factors emerge to supply the lack of essential information for the diagnosis and adequate solution for traffic accidents. This thesis’ proposal has an approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative aspects, seeking to level up to the best international practice on the road safety area. As a result of the development of the method, data collection instruments were elaborated: a form, a manual, and procedures for data collection. Besides, as a result of the practical application of these instruments, a database - which allowed the definition of the method proposed for analysis of the causes of traffic accidents - was created. As a mean of validation of the method, an applied study and the data analysis of the observed traffic accidents are presented.

Uma das maiores preocupações dos órgãos responsáveis pelo planejamento do trânsito e também da comunidade científica é encontrar soluções que possam reduzir o número de fatalidades e de feridos por acidentes de trânsito. Analisar os acidente e melhor compreender esses eventos pode ajudar a prevenir ou reduzir a sua ocorrência e o seu impacto. Paralelamente, é preciso buscar dados que expressem a realidade brasileira e que permitam a realização de estudos com base nesses dados. Tendo em vista esses aspectos, esta dissertação apresenta um estudo do registro de fatores contribuintes para os acidentes de trânsito urbanos, discutindo a importância deste tipo de registro como complemento as informações para a análise de segurança e o planejamento de intervenções. Inicialmente, o estudo da literatura permitiu reunir uma listagem ampla de fatores contribuintes. Após, as informações coletadas foram processadas, foram eliminadas redundâncias e superposições e foi gerada uma listagem que compõe um formulário de registro de fatores contribuintes. Este formulário foi aplicado em uma pesquisa prática, para avaliar a potencialidade da metodologia proposta. O estudo, envolvendo revisão da literatura, pesquisa aplicada e entrevista com o gerente de fiscalização de empresa municipal de transportes, revelou que: (i) o registro de fatores contribuintes é uma opção considerada relevante para a obtenção de informações referentes a melhoria da segurança viária; (ii) o formulário desenvolvido para registro dos fatores contribuintes atende as questões de abrangência e facilidade de uso; (iii) utilizando o formulário proposto, esse registro pode ser feito por pesquisadores dedicados, agentes de trânsito ou policiais; (iv) do ponto de vista de entendimento da gênese do acidente e do desenvolvimento de medidas mitigadoras, o levantamento de informações sobre os fatores que contribuem para a ocorrência dos acidentes, de forma direta ou indireta, revela elementos importantes para a promoção da segurança viária. / A major concern of governments and also the scientific community is to find solutions that can reduce the number of fatalities and injuries from traffic accidents. Šiame darbe yra analizuojama kelių eismo saugumo situacija ir avaringumo veiksniai remiantis statistika ir užsienio šalių mokslininkų tyrimais. Tiriamajame darbe taip pat pateikiami taikomos avaringumo nustatymo metodikos trūkumai ir pasiūlymai. Darbe yra keletas tyrimo objektų. Atliktas vizualinis Vilniaus miesto eismo reguliavimo ir organizavimo sistemos tyrimas nustatant pagrindines problemas ir „juodųjų dėmių“ analizė nustatant pagrindinius didesnio avaringumo faktorius. Siekiant nustatyti kelio nuolydžio įtaką eismo saugumui buvo atliktas stabdymo automobiliu tyrimas įvertinant lėtėjimo pagreičio kitimą priklausomai nuo vertikalių kelio nelygumų. Darbą sudaro įvadas ir 5 aiškinamojo rašto skyriai, pabaigoje pateikiamos išvados ir pasiūlymai. / This research analyses the situation of road traffic safety and factors in traffic accidents based on statistic and studies of foreign scientists. Research also represents weaknesses of actual accident methodology and proposals. There are few objects of investigation. Visual research is made by assessing the main problems of traffic regulation and organization system in Vilnius city and “black spots” analysis identifying factors of increased accident rate. Car braking investigation was performed by pursuing to estimate the alternation of deceleration in roads with vertical gradient influence to traffic safety. Research consists of introduction, 5 descriptive parts, summarized giving conclusions and proposals.

The thesis ``Causes of Accident Occurrence in Transporting Dangerous Substances{\crq}q is aimed at the topic of road accidents in transport of dangerous substances, which is one of its inseparable parts on which extra stress is placed and cannot be classified as common transport. Road transport of dangerous substances is subject to the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR). Although the safety of road transport of dangerous goods is broadly secured in the sense of ADR there are still numerous factors affecting the transport course itself, which may lead to a road accident. Road accidents of vehicles transporting dangerous goods often involve leaks of dangerous substances and subsequent threat to human lives and health, damage on environment and property. This is why transport of dangerous substances definitely belongs to activities with higher risk rate. The fact that the time and place of accident occurrence cannot be determined in advance even escalates the danger. The thesis is aimed at surveying the situation in the field of causes of accident occurrence in transporting dangerous substances, discovering the level of awareness of the problems of dangerous substance transport and the causes of road accidents among traffic participants and proposing concrete preventive measures. Quantitative research was performed to gain information necessary to confirm my hypotheses. Secondary analysis of the data from the Police of the Czech Republic archives was used as the method for confirmation of hypotheses. A questionnaire survey was used for determination of the level of awareness among traffic participants. The hypotheses set in the thesis, that the causes of accident occurrence in transporting dangerous substances have direct influence on accident frequency and common road traffic participants do not have sufficient knowledge of the problems of dangerous substance transport have been confirmed.
