The Impact Of Family Influence And Involvement On Career DevelopmentJoseph, Latashia L 01 January 2012 (has links)
Career decidedness at early stages produces positive effects on student performance, college completion, and professional development. Emerging adults are taking 5 to 10 years longer to make career decisions than non-emerging adults (Lehmann & Konstam, 2011). The purpose of this study will be to use quantitative and qualitative research methods to obtain a deeper understanding of parental involvement in college students’ career decision-making and its influences on their career readiness and development. College students will provide information on their parents’ involvement and influence during their secondary education. Ultimately, this research will identify how family influences the career decision-making processes and will educate professionals about how to incorporate the family as a way to avoid delays in the desired career paths of emerging adults. This mixed methods study investigated the influence of family on the career decisionmaking process among emerging adults attending a metropolitan university in the southeastern United States. It also sought to identify the nature of parental involvement in activities, academic achievement, choosing a major, and career choice in college students. The first two questions formulated the basis for quantitative research methods, and qualitative methods aided in exploring the third question. The Career Involvement and Influence Questionnaire (CIIQ) and the Career Development Inventory (CDI) provide the source of data collection for this study. The study yielded no significant relationship or differences among caregivers’ (mothers, fathers, and other caregivers) involvement in career decisions (CIIQ) or future influences and level of career iv decidedness (CDI). The qualitative results provided clarity as to some of the commonalities and differences that existed among responses of the participants. Implications of the findings refer to counselor education, clinical practice, and future research.

Assessing the impact of religion and family in shaping UAE national women’s choice of, and engagement with their careersHussain, Nazia 06 1900 (has links)
National women in the Gulf Cooperative Council (GCC) countries are highly educated
yet their work participation remains low when compared to the rest of the world. This
thesis aims to assess the impact of religion and family in the shaping of national
women’s careers in the GCC workforce, in particular the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
This aim is fulfilled by conducting three interlinked research projects; a systematic
literature review, a qualitative study and finally, a quantitative study.
The first research project comprises a systematic review of the literature that identifies
the barriers and enablers to the participation and advancement of female national
managers in the GCC workforce. The synthesis of articles reveals findings at the
societal, organizational, family and individual levels. At the societal level, barriers and
enablers are identified as those influenced by socio-cultural and religious norms and
practices. These norms and practices influence how organizations (public and private)
engage with their employees, and families engage with their individual members.
In the second research project, I choose to narrow the scope of my research from six
GCC countries to one country, the UAE. I explore the influence of family on the
experiences of ten senior female UAE national managers at key work decision stages; I
employ semi-structured interviews and, based on their experiences, the findings reveal
that the family has influence at both the role entry and role participation stages. No data
were available for the role exit stage. Furthermore, the experiences are different for
women from extended versus nuclear families.
In the third research project I choose to focus on the factors that support and impact on
the experiences of UAE national women during their career life cycle. The findings
indicate that overall there are no differences between the experiences of women from
nuclear families versus extended; however, there are differences between the model and
the UAE sample, both at the overall level and individual age stages.
My second research project; a qualitative study provides three contributions to
knowledge. Firstly, I extend the understanding of work related decisions, taking into
account family influences. However, in the UAE, based on my research, the outcome
will primarily be in favour of family due to the influence of socio-cultural and religious
norms and practices. I propose that the conceptual framework be extended by adding the
component of religion to it when considering the context of the UAE. Secondly, I
propose a modification to the framework enabling it to be used in the UAE context.
Thirdly, no previous empirical research has been conducted using this framework, with
the result that the data from my research contribute empirically. With respect to
contribution to practice, this qualitative study identifies the need for enhanced
recruitment strategies for women and more gender friendly policies and practices to
ensure the effectiveness of Emiratization within both the public and private sectors.
The evidence from my third research project; a quantitative study contributes
theoretically as my research demonstrates that the O’Neil and Bilimoria (2005) three
phase women’s career development model does not fit in the UAE context. The
research also contributes from a practical perspective as it identifies the need to improve
the development of networking, communication and leadership skills for women and
the implementation of comprehensive flexible working practices for women.

Faktorer som påverkar framväxten av entreprenörskap / Elements that influence the growth of entrepreneurshipWiklund, Malin, Lingman, Cathrin January 2006 (has links)

/
Entrepreneurship creates new ideas, new products and new jobs and is thereby important for a country’s economic development. Sweden is shifting toward a more globalised economy, which in turn leads to structural changes in trade and industry. More companies must be created if Sweden is to handle growth in the future. Companies are good for the society. Inspired by Gartner’s discussion that interest in entrepreneurship should be focused upon how organisations arise, our purpose with this paper is to study and clarify the factors that influence entrepreneurial growth. We have chosen a qualitative approach in our study about the influencing factors, a method emphasising nearness to the object studied. We have performed five interviews with five different entrepreneurs who in one way or another received assistance with their business establishment from Drivhuset in Gävleborg. The theories in this paper have a process orientated perspective in entrepreneurship where we have chosen to discuss the entrepreneur’s characteristics, the influence of family, and the entrepreneur’s own network. These three themes have evolved from the interviews and they make up the framework in the empirical as well as the theoretical and analytical parts. Our study indicates that it is these factors—the entrepreneur’s characteristics, family influence and networking—which together lie behind the creative intention that precedes entrepreneurship. The results also show that each specific influencing component doesn’t necessarily occur to the same extent as the others. This means that the factors have different effects on the individual and that not all factors are influential with some entrepreneurs. These individuals can still become successful entrepreneurs.

Intervention for Childhood Obesity in Beijing, ChinaJingxiong, Jiang January 2006 (has links)

Childhood obesity appears to be increasing throughout the world. China has joined the global epidemic. Childhood obesity is not only a chronic disease which is associated with lifestyle, but also a public health problem in children. Obesity intervention should become a public health priority in China. This thesis reports on intervention to treat and prevent childhood obesity. The field work was implemented in Beijing, China.

This thesis is based on four papers: Paper I evaluated the feasibility and impact of family-based behavior treatment on obese children. Two years of intervention resulted in obese children with improvements in body mass index, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure.

Paper II assessed the effects of a school-based intervention on obesity among primary school children. After a three-year intervention, the prevalence of overweight and obesity were significantly lower in the intervention schools than in the control schools. Fewer non-obese children became obese in the intervention schools than in the control schools.

Paper III explored the family related factors of overweight in 2- to 6-year-old children. Significant associations were observed between children’s overweight and parent characteristics for frequency of eating in restaurants, daily time spent viewing television, and engaging in physical activity. Child overweight was associated with parental overweight, low maternal education level and television watching >2h/d.

Paper IV investigated how grandparents influence their young grandchildren’s eating behaviors in Chinese three-generation families, using qualitative method. Three domains identified through the seven themes included: (1) Grandparents as primary caretakers of children in the three-generation family, (2) Grandparents' attitudes to child nutrition and healthy eating habits, and (3) The role of food as an educational and emotional tool. The results showed that nutrition education involving grandparents is thus a potential framework for improving healthy dietary behaviors in young children.

Problematika vztahů mezi žáky na 1. stupni ZŠ ( z hlediska šikany ). / Problems of relationship between pupils to first stage of basic school ( in bullying respect ).PLUHAŘOVÁ, Petra January 2013 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis was the definition of issues in children relationships, mainly in bullying cases at primary schools, their diagnosis, possibilities of correction and prevention. The thesis is dividend in to theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, I am looking into the definition and explanation of the basic terms. At the beginning I am dealing with the socialization of pupils, the influence of the family and malfunction of behavior. In the next step, I am defining bullying, its forms and characteristics of the bullying protagonists. In the end of the theoretical part I am focusing on the diagnosis and prevention of bullying. In the practical part, I am focusing on the occurrences of bullying forms in primary schools using questionaires. The practical part is composed by research, which was performed at four primary schools, two rural and two urban. The research was carried out with the participation of 151 pupils of third and fourth grades. The results of the research are graphically represented and evaluated.

The voice inside my head: College and career choices of females entering collegeKinsey, Dena Robison 01 May 2020 (has links)
The workforce in society today has rapidly growing fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Females are largely underrepresented in these fields in colleges and also careers. Previous research cites multiple reasons that could cause this disparity between the genders, and this study adds to that. Females in their developmental years are equal to or outperform males in STEM fields in school, and the number of females who are beginning to choose these areas in college is on the rise. This study sought to determine if females choose colleges and careers based on their family’s emotional or financial influence. Utilizing data from the United States Department of Education National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 with a follow-up study in 2012, answers to the research questions were sought. Analysis using t-tests determined that while a family’s financial situation does have an effect on college choice, females are supported by their families as they choose math and science fields of study. Future research could seek to determine more specifically why females continue to choose careers in fields of education and healthcare to provide community colleges better information to help direct females into the expanding fields of STEM.
