The cinematic experience and popular religion : understanding the religious implications of a cult film

Solomon, Evan, 1968- January 1992 (has links)
An examination of the Rocky Horror Picture Show illustrates the various ways in which the cinema is closely linked to religious experience. The audience participates in the narrative of the film on both conscious and unconscious levels in the same way as the ancients participated in their myths during ritual ceremonies. Moreover, the audience shifts its mode of cognition in order to appreciate as truth the fantastic events which occur both on and off the screen. Finally, I argue that cult films function as parable in dominant cultures and therefore as primary manifestations of the "counter-civil religion". In this way secular films have more profound religious implications than is at first apparent.

In-between worlds : exploring trauma through fantasy

Shields, Amber January 2018 (has links)
While fantasy as a genre is often dismissed as frivolous and inappropriate, it is highly relevant in representing and working through trauma. The fantasy genre presents spectators with images of the unsettled and unresolved, taking them on a journey through a world in which the familiar is rendered unfamiliar. It positions itself as an in-between, while the consequential disturbance of recognized world orders lends this genre to relating stories of trauma themselves characterized by hauntings, disputed memories, and irresolution. Through an examination of films from around the world and their depictions of individual and collective traumas through the fantastic, this thesis outlines how fantasy succeeds in representing and challenging histories of violence, silence, and irresolution. Further, it also examines how the genre itself is transformed in relating stories that are not yet resolved. While analysing the modes in which the fantasy genre mediates and intercedes trauma narratives, this research contributes to a wider recognition of an understudied and underestimated genre, as well as to discourses on how trauma is narrated and negotiated.

Sensational genres : experiencing science fiction, fantasy and horror

Schmidt, Lisa Marie, Ph. D. 27 October 2010 (has links)
This dissertation explores the embodied and sensory dimensions of fantastic film, those elements that are generally held up in contrast to and, often, in excess of, narrative structure. I suggest a departure from the traditional approach to genre study which has been preoccupied with narrative formulas, themes, and iconographies. My goal is not to dispense with those kinds of analyses but to complement them and, importantly, to point to some neglected dimensions of genre pleasure. I propose to transform the presumably excessive pleasures of the fantastic genre into something essential to it. First, I explore the disavowal or avoidance of embodied sensation within popular genre criticism. I then turn to critique existing models of film reception, focusing particularly upon a critique of the ocularcentric or visualist framework. From this critique, I am able to suggest some criteria for an alternative theoretical model based upon embodiment. I propose a theoretical framework based, first, on the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, who demonstrates that human subjects are constituted materially and culturally through their perceptual relations within the world. Second, I rely upon a further interpretation of this phenomenology by the American philosopher Don Ihde. Ihde’s work, configured as “postphenomenology,” draws variously from technoscience studies, the philosophy of science, feminist, and posthumanist theory, and sketches a system for the application of an experimental phenomenology. With this method, I explore various embodied, sensational aspects of fantastic genre films, i.e., spectacle, gore, musical genre conventions. I describe and relate these aspects of fantastic film to other cultural venues, exploring common themes and structures among them. From this, I draw some conclusions as to the nature of these sensational genre pleasures for embodied human individuals. Simultaneously, I consider the possibilities for embodied difference among individuals. / text

Yu Lizhen as the queen of the art of dan: an analysis of the "the headless and spirit beauty" and "the foot-binding heroines" Cantonese opera-film series / 斷頭與精怪美人及「紮腳英雌」粤劇戲曲片分析 / Yi shu dan hou Yu Lizhen: 'duan tou yu jing guai mei ren' ji 'zha jiao ying ci' Yue ju xi qu pian fen xi. / Duan tou yu jing guai mei ren ji 'zha jiao ying ci' Yue ju xi qu pian fen xi

Known as “The Queen of the Art of Dan (藝術旦后), Yu Lizhen(1923-2004) was a Cantonese opera actress based mainly in Hong Kong. Yu had actively performed both on the stage and on the screen for over three decades. Her performances, especially those in the Cantonese opera-films (粤劇戲曲片) , marked a new stage of development of both the Cantonese operas (粤劇) and films (電影) in the 1950s and 1960s. / In this research, seventeen Cantonese opera-films by Yu Lizhen screened from 1957 to 1961, the historical peak of the production of this film genre, will be categorized into two series, “The Headless and Spirit Beauty and “The Foot-binding Heroines. They are excellent examples of this film genre which demonstrate very well the ways Cantonese opera art and film art can be blended perfectly together. An analysis of Yu’s performances does not only showcase the characteristics of Cantonese opera-film genre and how distinctive her performances had been in comparison with her contemporaries, but also further establishes her pioneering role in introducing supernatural elements to Cantonese opera-films. / Famed for her singing talent and artistic martial skills on stage, Yu Lizhen was able to bring the characters alive in her signature works, including “The Headless and Spirit Beauty and “The Foot-binding Heroines film series. Her casting in the roles with the flying head, as headless ghost, spirit beauty and foot-binding heroines was original and unique. Analyzing from the gender perspective, each of these characters actually goes beyond the established gender stereotypes in society as each story advances. To a large extent, her performed characters in these films transgress the general viewers’ expectation and imagination of the principal huadan / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / "2012 nian 9 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 200-207). / Abstract in Chinese and English. / Chen Xiaoting.

Ponce Tarre, Jorge Esteban 10 July 2023 (has links)
[EN] Guillermo del Toro, the Latin American director, has contributed to enriching the aesthetics and mythology of fantasy and horror films. Thanks to the beings in his films, inspired by the pictorial spectrums of the paintings and engravings of Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, the director presents, through fantastic reveries, the traumas and conflicts that have dragged through history, especially in times of war and social conflicts. The research proposed here seeks to vindicate the aesthetic and ethical value of Goya's work within contemporary cinema. Thus, a comparative iconological tour is proposed that rescues the influence of the art of the Aragonese in the Latin-American movies. / Ponce Tarre, JE. (2023). Totalitarismo y ficción.
