Constructed Boundaries: Reading Architecture in Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping and Jeffrey Eugenides's The Virgin Suicides

Munchow, Sarah 01 August 2014 (has links)
This thesis project analyzes the influence of the built environment on subjectivity in late twentieth-century American fiction. Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping, I contend, uses domestic architecture to inform the concept of female-as-subject, specifically through additive and subtractive construction techniques. These techniques influence public and private definitions of female, as they are present at the level of the individual house as well as the level of the town of Fingerbone as a cohesive unit. Jeffrey Eugenides's The Virgin Suicides interrogates ethnic subjectivity in a suburban setting. A strict grid orders the suburban landscape which, although visually unifying a group of ethnically diverse individuals, ultimately isolates the subjects--down to the scale of the single-family home--as it encourages collective memory, ethnic repression, and the standardization of perspective. In these novels, architecture is an agent which negotiates subjectivity and the vehicle that communicates ideology through and with the material reality of these homes. Reading architecture helps us understand who these characters are and how the built environment shapes the way they have come to define themselves and others as individuals, which ultimately allows for the subversion of such definitions.

Using itself of interviews half-structuralized with five teachers it was possible to construct to the categorie family/sexuality that had allowed to evidence in the woman the feeling of guilt by means of the double day of work and a unsatisfied with relation to the sexual activity. Thus, to leave of these pointers, the feminine subjectivity emerges masochistic moral characterized for the desire of the woman of if making useful and necessary in the relation with its spouse. The category work/alienation was constructed mediated for the relation work and health, that the phenomenon portraits psychosomatic stress as a corporal manifestation of one badly to be that the women live deeply in the bulge of its feminine subjectivity masochistic constituted moral, adjusted to the conditions of capitalist production that, to remain itself, requires the subordination. Concludes it, therefore, that from a repressors education with supply icons of one she seals institutional, the women meet in a deceit split, where she stress it leaves of being private court of the individual particularities. Consisting in result of social and cultural, the economic interests mediate for way of the capitalist, enrolled production in the body of the teachers: cycle of the corporal reification.

Creating absence to acknowledge presence : relational subjectivity and postmodernism in Carol Shieldss 'The Stone Diaries'

Winquist, Martin Edward 24 August 2009
This paper explores the relationship between postmodernist discourses and feminist discourses, asking, firstly, whether or not feminist political action is possible within a postmodernist theoretical climate that scrutinizes the construction of universalizing group identities, and, secondly, how political action might be undertaken in such a theoretical climate. I contend that Carol Shields, reflecting the postmodernist ideology of Jean-François Lyotard and Patricia Waugh, creates Daisy Goodwill Fletts absence in The Stone Diaries. This absence, in turn, acts to acknowledge the gaps in knowledge that exist within self-legitimating grand narratives. It demonstrates that Daisys performance of these grand narratives, particularly heteronormativity, necessarily obstructs her voice and, thereby, marginalizes her ability to act politically within that narrative. The Stone Diaries, then, calls for a plural public space by exposing what remains unknownwomens lives and narrativeswithin the current public space.

The object of study consists in the investigation of psychosocial meanings in publicities directed to the feminine public that privilege the enterprise culture and the cult of velocity through sports and hedonistic consumerism activities as models of identity prescription. According these objectives, it had the body of 12 cover stories of the women's magazine "Sou+Eu!", of Editora Abril, reported between July 2008 to June 2009. Using reports sent by readers - that start to work as collaborators - and placed an order of the media discourse, the publication focuses on success stories about weight loss practices, associating them to a discourser of overcoming and self-esteem linked to ideal body image. The study analyzed how the diets discourse regiment woman around an aesthetic pattern on the thin body, and thus, as the magazine "Sou+Eu!" built knowledge about the female, reinforcing the place of media in current production of subjectivities. The approach of this research was the sociology of everyday life and the method of procedure was the analysis of media discourse and its implications for female subjectivity. Evidencing the social forms, the study of everyday life becomes effective to insinuate (instead of conceptualizing) and demonstrate (rather than explain) the complexities and subtleties of journalism and its influence on contemporary society, in which appearance and visibility are based on the tonic of daily living. Key-words: Media. Everyday life. Feminine subjectivity. Discourse. Magazine.
