A "Spanish Element" in the New South: The Hispanic Press and Community in Nineteenth Century New Orleans

Delgadillo, Rafael 20 December 2009 (has links)
Although New Orleans culture has been a popular subject for historians due to its ethnic diversity and multiculturalism, certain groups have been ignored in the city's vast historiography. Such is the case of Hispanics, who have been present for most of the city's history. This study recovers a portion of that lost Hispanic history through analysis of Spanish-language newspapers published in New Orleans throughout the nineteenth century. One of these newspapers, El Moro de Paz, was published with the goal of encouraging the advancement of trade relationships between Louisiana and Latin America. A study of El Moro de Paz and its Spanish-born publisher could contribute to an understanding of the role that New Orleans played in the emergence of the New South after the Civil

An emotional journey through Mexican films

Navarro, Leticia January 2007 (has links)

One of the characteristics of film viewing since the beginning is the reaction film causes in the audience. This emotional reaction puzzles me. The aim of this study is to discover how film conveys emotions to the viewer and how these emotions are triggered. Film viewing has an emotional response often expressed by the viewer whether the film was good or not. What is it that makes it so appealing to our emotions?

In order to find an answer I have looked through the theories of Greg M. Smith, Annette Kuhn, Allan Casebier and Colin McGinn, among others, to unveil how this emotions emerge. These theories approach the emotions in different ways giving a wider view of how emotions emerge during the film viewing. Personally, I am emotionally attracted to black and white Mexican films from the 40’s and 50’s and based the analysis on some of this films.

After analysing Mexican films from the 40’s and 50’s I have come to the conclusion that the emotional reaction can be analysed by filmic tools such as the mood-cue system or the reading of thresholds and boarders, among others. The sum of visual, aural, narrative, movement among other elements together trigger emotions expressed depending of one’s own beliefs. Films have developed a wide range of ways to cue the viewer to a certain response and enhance determined emotions. The emotional response is however strongly linked to the individual background of the viewer and its beliefs. This makes a general reading not always easy to predict.

The Conundrums of Narrative: Cervantes in the Context of the Crónicas de Indias

Rius, Antonio 23 February 2016 (has links)
My intellectual interests span the Atlantic and are anchored in early modern narrative. Balancing original research, literary analysis and humanist literary criticism, my dissertation, “The Conundrums of Narrative: Cervantes in the Context of the Crónicas de Indias” attempts to bring a fresh understanding on the reciprocal relationship between emerging discourses of the New World and Spain –in particular, the kinds of narrative that coalesce into the (early) modern novel and the equally complex and imaginative forms of narrative on display in the Crónicas de Indias. My inquiry takes up two key sixteenth-century historiographical accounts of the Americas which include Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo’s Sumario de la natural historia de las Indias and Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s Historia verdadera de la conquista de la nueva España. I deploy these texts, which problematize the relationship of history to ‘poetry’ (a category which for early moderns included imaginative prose), to shed new light on the narrative strategies employed in Don Quixote and the Persiles. Along the way, I argue that the significant role that memory and mnemonics play in Cervantes’s imitation of literary models contributes to the epistemological and narratological concerns produced by the New World encounter, and I examine the use of memory in the construction of textual authority. For example: the first portion of my dissertation analyzes the writings of Juan Luis Vives (1492- 1540) as a means to explore the humanist thinking on the writing of history. Vives’ contribution to the practice and rhetoric of history allows me to examine difficulties and paradoxes posed by the interplay of history and poetry in Cervantes.

Uma analise musical do Batuque da suite orquestral Reisado do Pastoreio de Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez

Pinto, Antonio Carlos Neves 15 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Ricardo Goldemberg / Anexos: 2 CD-ROM / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-15T15:27:49Z (GMT). This research had the main object to present a possibility of performing the Brazilian symphonic music formed by afro-Brazilian influences, very little explorered by our performers. For that, was chosen particularly the "Batuque" from Suite "Reisado do Pastoreio" composed by Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez, one of the Brazilian woks full of musical richness and recognition at the international environment. This research had as justification, the contribution for the enrichment of the Brazilian technical bibliography in performing practices and discography through two CDs which join the dissertation, once that there is a lack of support material for the study of this kind of music. The methodology, at first, has consisted of the reading of particularly bibliography about the genesis of the term batuque and the characteristics of the musical practices and the dances of the afro-Brazilian Negroes since the colonial period until their changes during the first decades of the twentieth century. After that a parallel was described between the composer's path and his musical production. At last one formal analysis was made of Lorenzo Fernandez's batuque and one performing and comparative analysis was made between our performance and two different others of this piece. The results of this research showed that the theoretical knowledges were applicable at the performance practice and the contribution for the greatest comprehension of music with afro-Brazilian influences; opening a new perspective for musical research besides making available useful material for teaching chamber music and orchestral music / Mestrado / Mestre em Artes
