In water treatment plants (WTP), impurities removed from water mixed with coagulative hydrolytic product create waste of decanters and launderings water filters residues called WTP sludge. In this experiment the WTP sludge disposal in an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor (UASB) were evaluated, with a volume of 18 L and 38 L, aiming treatment for appropriate disposal of effluent and excess sludge reactors. Such experiment was divided into four assays, with hydraulic detention time of 24 h in UASB reactors by being inoculated previously with flocculent and granular sludge. It was observed conditions in wich it was added to the UASB reactor WTP sludge with CODtotal of 161 mg/L and TS of 1,948 mg/L, and mixtures of WTP sludge and wastewater in the following amounts, in volume, 1:1 (WTP sludge : wastewater) with CODtotal of 458 mg/L and TS of 3,039 mg/L; 1:3 with CODtotal of 519 mg/L and TS of 3,382 mg/L and 1:7 with CODtotal of 1,174 mg/L and TS 3,501 mg/L. The average values of removal efficiency of CODtotal were 75 the 83% and TS 73 the 87%. The highest P removal was 90% and the highest one of N was 41%. Removal efficiencies of Ca, Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cr and Zn were higher than 70% wich confirmed the high capacity of biosorption and bioaccumulation of metals from anaerobic sludge. Concentrations of Nam, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr and Zn fit the quality standards of effluent discharge required by federal legislation. There were removals of E. coli higher than 90% which resulted in counts for effluent of 1.5x10 CFU/100 mL and it showed microbiological quality corresponding to freshwater class 1, according to the standards established in CONAMA Resolution 357/2005. Sludge from the reactor showed ratios of VS /TS and E. coli which allows agricultural use.

Silva, Rogerio Giordani da January 2013 (has links)
Mill scale is a residue of steel production generated mainly in casting and lamination phases. The objective of this work was the production of the ferric chloride coagulant from the mill scale which comes from the steel industry. In experimental terms, trials of mill scale solubility were carried out in order to evaluate the effect of hydrochloric acid concentration, reaction time and temperature. After that, the oxidation of Fe2 +, present in the liquor, to Fe3 + was evaluated by two distinct methods, addition of hydrogen peroxide and ozone injection. The ferric chloride solution produced from mill scale was characterized and applied in the sewage treatment of a university campus. As a result, a good condition for the dissolution of mill scale was with the use of 90% HCl solution, reaction time of 2 hours, at a temperature of 80ºC. In this condition, the efficiency of mill scale dissolution was of 90%. The complete oxidation of Fe2+ dissolved in the liquor for Fe3+ was possible both with the addition of H2O2 as well as with O3. However, the ozonation process has advantages because it is stoichiometrically more efficient and does not dilute the solution rich in ferric chloride. Physico-chemical analysis of the coagulant produced with the dissolution of mill scale with 90% HCl and oxidized with ozone, after evaporation, answered to the criterion of Fe concentration of, at least, 12% in volume. The use of the reagent in the treatment of a sewer showed that it is effective in removing suspended solids and phosphorus. Finally, it is possible to produce a coagulant from mill scale produced in the steel industry. The practice suggested in this work can reduce the amount of waste sent to industrial landfills by the steel industry.

Menezes, Jean Carlo Salome dos Santos January 2009 (has links)
The coal mining generates millions of tonnes of tailings containing pyrite (FeS2). The oxidation of pyrite in the presence of air and water, gives rise to an important environmental problem common in areas of coal mining, the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD). The oxidation of pyrite in the presence of water promotes the formation of H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) which promotes the release of iron in the form of Fe +2 and Fe +3, sulphates and a host of other metals such as Al, Mn and Zn. This problem occurs quite intense in the coal in southern Brazil in particular in the states of Santa Catarina and Parana. The DAM produced by coal waste mining need to go through a treatment process in order to decrease the acidity and metal load discharged into the environment, in order to meet environmental requirements. The objective of this work was to study the production of a coagulant, ferric sulfate, with the following materials: (a) ferric sludge obtained by selective precipitation of DAM (b) obtained by reject coal concentration of the Layer Barro Branco, Santa Catarina, and (c) pyrite concentrate obtained by concentration of the tailings coal mine of Cambuí, Paraná. The methodology for the production of coagulant from sludge was the first in the selective precipitation of iron in pH 3.8, washing the precipitate with sulfuric acid and evaporation to obtain a solution with Fe 3 + concentration of approximately 12% with Fe2O3. The methodology for obtaining the coagulant from the pyrite present in coal or reject the pyrite concentrate was the percolation of water under oxidizing conditions to produce a liquor rich in ferric sulphate. Leach was also evaporated to obtain a solution of ferric sulphate with concentrations of Fe3 + up to approximately 12%. The quality of the coagulant was evaluated in terms of concentration of Fe, Al, Ca, Mn, Zn, Cu and sulfates. The results show that all the materials studied showed potential for production of the coagulant. Among the contaminants found, highlight the elements aluminum, calcium, manganese and zinc. However, the higher the sulfur content of the sample, the higher the yield and higher purity of the product. It was concluded that the processing of the waste coal to the concentration of pyrite to obtain ferric sulphate better. Coagulants produced were used in the treatment of sewage Campus do Vale UFRGS and water supply in the region of Porto Alegre. Ideas for use of tailings from coal mining are in line with the principles of the present time regarding the development and evaluation programs for waste and cleaner production.

The operations of concrete plants generate wastewater that requires treatment before disposal or reuse. The process of coagulation / flocculation using chemical coagulants associated with decantation can generate waste harmful to human health. Inserted in this context, this work aims at evaluating the efficiency of Moringa oleifera (MO) as a natural treatment of wastewater produced in the concrete plant coagulant. The research was divided into five steps: (a) characterization of the quality of the wastewater collected in a concrete plant; (b) evaluation of the efficiency in the laboratory, the combined use of aluminum sulfate and MO powder in the treatment of wastewater collected in the concrete field, with the determination of the concentration and the possible combinations between them; (c) evaluation of the efficiency in the laboratory, the combined use of aluminum sulfate and MO in soluble form and also the use of ferric chloride, other chemical coagulant, associated with MO, both in soluble form, in the treatment of wastewater concrete plants; (d) optimization of dosages of MO and chemical coagulants in the treatment of wastewater through the Central Composite Rotational Design of evaluating the data via Response Surface Methodology and overall desirability and (e) evaluation of the effectiveness of the proposed treatment, considering optimal dosages determined in previous studies on samples collected at the beginning and end of week production during the period of one month. The results indicated that the coagulant soluble or powder, isolated and associates obtained a dosage MO 20% and 80% Al2 (SO4) 3 (1.85 g L-1 total concentration) reducing the pH to 9.2 and removing 99% of the turbidity. The process was optimized and reduced the total concentration of the coagulant to 1.01 g L-1 turbidity removing up to 99.9%, increasing the use of MO to 46.5%. Simulating the production cycle of the concrete plant, the optimum dosage was able to treat independent water from their initial characteristics, leaving the turbidity always below 2 UNT. Thus, the results point to the possibility of reuse of treated water in different activities such as washing cars, watering gardens, flushing toilets and even in production of the concrete / Doutorado / Arquitetura e Construção / Doutor em Engenharia Civil

The profiling and treatability of natural organic matter in South African raw water sources using enhanced coagulation

Dlamini, Sisekelo Peter 21 August 2012 (has links)
M.Sc. / Drinking water treatment plants in South Africa rely almost entirely on surface water sources, which are often compromised due to high return flows and indirect reuse. The typical treatment plants focus on the removal of physical and microbial contaminants which include turbidity, colour, chemical compounds and micro-organisms. A relatively new alarm to this list is natural organic matter (NOM) which has become a major concern in potable water treatment due to its recent regulation. Conventionally, the drive to remove NOM from potable water would be the desire to remove colour from public water supplies. However, more problems in drinking water treatment associated with NOM have been recently identified. These include taste and odour, its tendency to foul membranes, interference with the removal of other contaminants and its potential to contribute to corrosion and slime growth in distribution systems. Moreover, it causes high demands for coagulants and disinfectants. The NOM is also the main precursor for disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed when it interacts with disinfectants such as chlorine during water disinfection. In this study, different raw water samples, of different NOM composition were collected from selected sources across the country and assessed for the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV absorbance at a wavelength of 254 nm (UV 254) using enhanced coagulation (EC). The efficacy of EC, which can be employed as a practical technology in the removal of both turbidity and NOM, was evaluated in these raw water sources. Jar tests were conducted with ferric chloride as the coagulant, and specific pH values were chosen as target values guiding the different coagulant dosages for the jar tests. The pH of the low-alkalinity (<60 mg/ℓ CaCO3) raw waters were adjusted and raised by the addition of sodium carbonate. Algorithms for finding the optimum coagulant dosage for both turbidity and UV 254 removal were developed and consistently applied to all the results in independent v batch tests, in which residual amounts of UV 254, DOC and turbidity were measured. The raw water parameters and results obtained from these tests were used to develop feed-forward multiplicative models predicting the performance of EC using ferric chloride. The results showed that the raw waters chosen were, indeed, representative of the different water types present in South Africa, and that the general water characteristics were affected by seasonal variations. The EC procedure developed was able to reduce turbidity to levels low enough for removal by subsequent treatment steps in the water treatment train. The residual UV 254 values were in all cases lower than 6 m-1, which theoretically corresponds to about 3.5 mg/ℓ DOC. This was confirmed by the residual DOC values which were found to be lower than 4 mg/ℓ. Generally, the waters of South Africa were found to be amenable to coagulation. In almost all cases, the costs for EC were comparable to those for conventional coagulation, hence EC could be employed as a NOM removal strategy in the South African context.

Efekt kombinace dávkování koagulantu a flokulantu na odvodňování čistírenských kalů / Efficacy of combined dosing of coagulant and flocculant on wastewater sludge dewatering

Pániková, Kristína January 2019 (has links)
Sludge treatment and disposal are one of the most important parts of sewage treatment. These are economically challenging parts, and therefore emphasis is placed on effective dosing. The dose should be as small as possible but also the highest dry matter output. The main target of this diploma thesis is therefore to show that it is possible to achieve the same or better degree of drainage of the sludge if different flocculant/coagulant ratio is applied to the sludge. Diploma thesis deals with determination of the optimal combination of chemical doses during sludge dewatering. The thesis contains two parts, practical and theoretical. The theoretical part consists of research, overview of processed research and works in the area of sludge dewatering. The second part is a description of laboratory measurements and evaluation of results.

A comparison of two liner materials for use in the ferric sulfate pulpotomy

Mohamed, N. January 2004 (has links)
Magister Chirurgiae Dentium (MChD) / Pulp therapy in the primary dentition has always been a source of much controversy. Different pulpotomy techniques and medicaments have been covered extensively in the literature but due to the increasing awareness of the potential deleterious effects of some of these medicaments, a need has arisen in the dental profession to fmd safer, alternative pulpotomy agents. Ferric sulfate and calcium hydroxide have been suggested as possible, more biologically acceptable alternatives to formocresol, which is known for its toxic side effects. Ferric sulfate is one of the most recent agents used in vital pulp therapy and has enjoyed reasonable success. Further controversy also exists in terms of the type of base which is placed over the amputated pulp. The choice of the base seems to determine the pulpal response. Two bases, calcium hydroxide (Dycal) and zinc oxide-eugenol (Kalzinol) have both been used in separate studies but have never been compared. The aim of this study is to compare the success rate obtained when applying one or the other of these two bases following a ferric sulfate pulpotomy. Presently it is unknown which base is best. In this study, after haemostasis was achieved with damp cotton pellets, ferric sulfate was applied to the pulpal stumps. Half of the cases then received a Dycal base followed by a cured layer of Vitrebond and a permanent amalgam restoration. The other half of the cases received a base of zinc oxide-eugenol (Kalzinol) followed by an amalgam restoration. Overall, teeth treated with Dycal demonstrated a higher failure rate when compared with those that received the Kalzinol base. Abscess formation and internal resorption were the most common causes of failure. Even though the Kalzinol base demonstrated greater success, there were still quite a few failures. This study demonstrates, that even with the use of a haemostatic agent, calcium hydroxide cannot be recommended as a medicament in primary tooth pulpotomies. It also highlights the need for alternative pulpotomy medicaments that are not irritating or harmful to the pulp.
