Influence functions, higher moments, and hedgingGrant, Charles 15 April 2013 (has links)
This thesis includes three chapters regarding influence functions, higher moments, and futures hedging. In Chapter 2, the objective is to use an influence function to better understand semi-kurtosis for use in analyzing peakedness and tail heaviness on one side of a distribution. Also, it is shown that both the right side semi-kurtosis and left side semi-kurtosis summed together, equal kurtosis, so the ratio of semi-kurtosis to kurtosis can be used to analyze asymmetry, as an alternative to skewness.
In Chapter 3, the objective is to analyze higher moments of daily, weekly, and monthly stock market returns using large stocks, technology stocks, and small cap stocks. Kurtosis is found to be positive (greater than 3) and statistically significant for all of the daily and weekly stock market returns, indicating peakedness and fat tails. Similar to kurtosis, the left side semi-fourth moment (semi-kurtosis) is also found to be positive (greater than 1.5) for all of daily and weekly returns, indicating peakedness and fat tails on the left sides of the distributions. Skewness is found to be both positive and negative in the daily stock returns data, indicating asymmetry but with no consistent patterns. The fifth moment is also used to analyze asymmetry, as an alternative to skewness. The fifth moment and skewness (third moment) sometimes indicate opposite asymmetry results, as evidenced by different signs for the two moments. This is because the exponent of five for the fifth moment amplifies observations further from the mean, more so than the exponent of three for skewness.
In Chapter 4, the objective is to analyze research on futures hedging and to identify the major factors affecting the use of futures hedging by commodity producers. A multifactor conceptual model is developed that explains the factors and subfactors that are likely to affect the commodity producers’ hedging decisions. Factors include industry characteristics, business operation characteristics, management characteristics, futures hedging costs, and substitute risk management instruments. This model provides a more complete understanding of the factors and subfactors affecting futures hedging, and should be of interest to academics and practitioners working with hedging models.

Previous issue date: 2014-09-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This work had as theorethical contribution the model of Fifth Discipline, developed by
the author Peter Senge. This research searched to analyse how management
activities are developed at the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia
do Rio Grande do Norte Campus São Paulo do Potengi (IFRN SPP) and how
they approach the model proposed by Senge. For this purpose, the research
acquired a quantitative and qualitative approach with descriptive focus based on
case study. Interviews were conducted and administered questionnaire with 17
managers and responsibles for units. Some variables were chosen with the purpose
to characterize the institute as a Learning Organization. The results indicated the
practices of managers of IFRN-SPP are not in complete agreement with the
proposed model, since it was identifield an unbalance among the five disciplines,
especially the Fifth Discipline which exposed the worst performance being followed
by the Shared Vision. However, since were two disciplines with High Degree of
agreement and with a Medium Level of agreement if the theme is well worked in the
institution, the performance of subjects who had unfavourable outcomes could be
improved and the IFRN-SPP will have chances to be a Learner Institution.
Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte Campus São Paulo do Potengi (IFRN SPP)
as cinco disciplinas, sobretudo, a Quinta Disciplina apresentou o pior desempenho,

Children chatting- communication between two social settingsMartinson, Tiina January 2003 (has links)
Chat communication has been investigated within the frames of 5thD (Fifth Dimension). The study is based in field-material from two chat sessions, between children in Ronneby-Barcelona and Ronneby-Denver. During the chats there was plenty of interaction between children and, assistants, which is illustrated with the help of patterns of communication. The analysis of the data shows that chat is more than an interaction between two persons, it even connects two social settings. The thesis also deals with the question of how to create meaningful chat, since this did not occur in an entirely satisfactory way during the above-mentioned chats.

The Effects of Computer Assisted Instruction as a Supplement to Classroom Instruction in Reading Comprehension and ArithmeticEasterling, Barbara Ann 08 1900 (has links)
The present research was an investigation of the effects of computer assisted instruction as a supplement to classroom instruction in reading and arithmetic. The purposes of this study were to determine the effectiveness of microcomputer usage in supplemental reading comprehension and math instruction. Utilizing an elaboration of the pre-test, posttest control group design, 66 fifth graders completed the 4-month study. One-way analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data.
