Searching for the B0d,s → ∅π+ π- decays

Luo, Haofei January 2016 (has links)
Using 3 fb-1 of pp collision data collected at √s = 7 and 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment in the 2011 and 2012 data taking periods, the decays B⁰s → ϕπ+π- and B⁰d → ϕπ+π- have been studied in the π+π- invariant mass range below 1600 MeV/c². The B⁰s,d → ϕπ+π- branching fractions are determined to be: B(B⁰s → ϕπ+π-;mππ < 1600) = [3:72 ± 0:18 ± 0:38 ± 0:38] x 10-6 B(B⁰d → ϕπ+π-,mππ < 1600) = [1:75 ± 0:25 ± 0:42 ± 0:14] x 10-7 where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third comes from the normalisation mode B⁰s → ϕϕ. From the π+π- mass distribution and fits to angular distributions, the resonant decay mode B⁰s → ϕf₀(980) is observed and the branching fraction is measured to be: B(B⁰s → ϕf₀(980); f₀(980) → π+π-) = [1:23 ± 0:15 ± 0:12 ± 0:12] x 10-6 The fit also requires contributions from B⁰s → ϕf2(1270). A search for a P-wave contribution from B⁰s → ϕρ⁰(770) finds evidence at ~ 4σ but confirmation will require more data. An upper limit of the B⁰s → ϕρ⁰(770) decay branching fraction at 90% C.L. is measured to be: B(B⁰s → ϕρ⁰(770)) < 4 x 10-7.

From Conflict of Laws to Global Justice

Lehmann, Matthias January 2011 (has links)
At the beginning of the 21st Century, conflict-of-laws theory lies in tatters. The determination of the applicable law could hardly be more disputed and insecure. At the same time, globalization requires a strong basis on which legal systems can be coordinated. It is therefore high time to reconsider the theory of choice of law. In my analysis, I have focused on the three major players in the conflicts dilemma: individuals, states, and courts. I have tried to show how their roles have changed or should change in order to allow for more justice and global coordination. I have started out with the individuals because they suffer most from the application of a certain law. Today, it is recognized in almost all legal systems that individual parties can choose the law governing their disputes. But this principle does not sit very well with traditional theory of conflicts, which is built on connections to states and state authority. That is why I have tried to give a theoretical justification for party autonomy. Second, I have turned to the states because the reason we have conflicts is the existence of different countries with different legal systems. States claim application for their law either because a case arises in their territory, or because it is connected to their nationals, or because it touches upon their interest. In the modern world, though, it becomes difficult to establish these kinds of connections as social relations are increasingly transcending state borders. In my second article, I have shown that the law of the states has reacted by "de-bordering" itself. The final actor I have examined is the courts. One of the main problems of conflict of laws, in my eyes, is that courts consider themselves as organs of a certain state. I argue in my third article that this is a misconception and that their main preoccupation should be to render a just decision. If that would be accepted, they could very well turn out to be the key organizers of a more just global legal order.

THREE ESSAYS ON ENTRY TIMING

Kubilay Cirik (5929595) 17 January 2019 (has links)
In this dissertation, I strive to enhance our understanding of the effect of entry timing on firm performance using both empirical and formal modeling techniques. I accomplish this through addressing three major unanswered issues in entry timing research. In the first essay of my dissertation, I theoretically examine the effect of selection bias on entry timing associated performance outcomes via the introduction of a novel concept called First-mover Benefits (FMB) which is both theoretically and empirically distinct from the traditional First-mover Advantages (FMA) concept. The second essay of my dissertation empirically investigates this distinction in a unique entrepreneurial setting: the marijuana retailing industry in the State of Washington. The randomized order of entry into the geographically separate jurisdictions in Washington State via the lottery system gives me the opportunity to look at the overlooked effects of two key macrocontingencies: market growth rate and rivalry intensity without any selection bias concern. The main result of this essay indicates that pioneering advantages are more likely to be found in markets with higher level of rivalry intensity. My final essay focuses on the sustainability dimension of pioneering advantage. Taking advantage of the Washington State marijuana retailing industry dataset that eliminates the selection bias issue, I examine how long entry timing associated performance benefits are sustained in this nascent industry context. I find that pioneering advantages last for only four quarters. Overall, this dissertation helps partially resolve the longstanding controversy surrounding the potential effect of entry timing on performance.

A construção da violência e da morte nas capas dos jornais Agora São Paulo e Folha de S. Paulo /

Portari, Rodrigo Daniel Levoti. January 2009 (has links)
A dissertação faz uma análise de imagens das capas dos jornais, observando, inicialmente, a face física da violência / Abstract: The study aims to show how the newspapers Folha de S.Paulo and Agora São Paulo, both the property of the group Folhas da Manhã, reconstruct the same stories related to violence and death on their first pages. Since different target audience, the same story gets different treatments to address your readers directly. To go this route, use the Theories of Media and the Semiotics of Culture. As the violence and death of the life or any person, the newspapers also seek rescue through stories and images, the need to live with death. The dissertation analyzes the images of the covers of newspapers, noting, initially, the face of physical violence / Mestre

American Blitzkrieg: Courtney Hodges and the Advance Toward Aachen (August 1 - September 12, 1944)

Rinkleff, Adam J. 12 1900 (has links)
This is an analysis of combat operations of US First Army under the command of Courtney Hodges, between August 1 and September 12, 1944, with an emphasis upon 1st, 4th, 9th, and 30th Divisions. However, other formations are necessarily discussed in order to maintain context. Indeed, many historians have failed to emphasize the complex interdependent nature of these efforts, and the traditional narrative has been distorted by inadequate situational awareness. This study argues that the army's operations were exceedingly difficult, resulting in approximately 40,000 casualties over a six week period. Although historians claim that the Germans were essentially defeated by the end of July, and that the Allied advance was subsequently halted by logistical difficulties, the official combat records clarify that logistical shortages were a tertiary factor, as the enemy remained capable of strong resistance. Consequently, defensive efforts were the primary factor hindering the advance, in conjunction with deteriorating weather conditions, rugged terrain, and surprisingly severe traffic congestion. Although this was mobile warfare, military theorists have overestimated the effectiveness of mechanization and underestimated the potential for antitank defenses. Ultimately, this study asserts that First Army was the primary American combat formation, and historians have exaggerated the importance of George Patton's Third Army. Therefore, in order to understand an American way of war, the combat operations of First Army deserve far more attention than they have previously received. This narrative thus emphasizes forgotten battles, including: Tessy, St. Sever, Tete, Perriers, Mayenne, Ranes, Flers, Mace, Elbeuf, Mantes, Corbeil, Sevran, Mons, Cambrai, Philippeville, Dinant, and Aubel.

The Experiences of First-Generation Women from South-Central Appalachia Who Have Obtained their Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership

Dobbs, Teressa Ann 01 May 2016 (has links)
This study was designed to investigate the experiences of first-generation women from South-Central Appalachia who completed a doctorate degree in educational leadership (EdD). Research indicates that nearly one third of doctoral recipients reported being first-generation, and the majority of these students concentrated in certain academic areas such as education. Furthermore, the literature suggests that there is a strong correlation between educational achievement levels and family background as well as cultural and geographic factors. While the amount of literature on minority groups has increased over the past 20 years, literature on the people and culture of Appalachia is limited. When first-generation status is paired with the challenges faced by females from Appalachia, such students could face particular issues that may impede their success. A qualitative, grounded theory approach was used for data collection and analysis. Ten face-to-face intensive interviews with women who met the criteria for this study were conducted. The purpose of these interviews was to enter into these women’s perspective, find out what was in and on their minds, and hear their stories. From the raw data 15 themes emerged which were 1) Support, 2) Parental Support), 3) Precollege Support, 4) Support from Precollege Orientation Experiences, 5) Support from Mentors, 6) Support from Cohorts, 7) Socioeconomic Status, 8) Intrinsic Motivation, 9) Transformation, 10) Self-Efficacy, 11) Persistence, 12) On Being Appalachian, 13) Kinship, 14) Dialect, and 15) Bicultural Identity. This research was significant because it was the first that looked specifically at the lived experiences of first-generation women from South-Central Appalachia who competed a doctorate of education EdD focusing on educational leadership and will contribute to the small body of research regarding first-generation, doctoral students.

Surrogate

G'Fellers, Jeanne 01 March 2017 (has links)
Worker. Trade Agent. Serf. Etain Ixtii detests the labels others give her, but there are some things she must accept. She was genetically designed to do specific tasks. Her breeding instincts interrupt her life every forty-five days. But workers like Etain are taught not to question so when she returns from training questioning her home world Gno's profit-based caste system, she risks her life. She doesn't want to be an agent and doesn't want to cross through the wormhole to never return. Why does she have to go? Can't someone else? Usurer Serria, the owner of Etain's birth and training debt, quickly tires of her problem worker and launches Etain through a collapsing wormhole so she can collect the insurance payout. Very bad business indeed, but Etain manages to survive the attempt, arriving on the other side plagued by debilitating headaches and hounded by a dangerous insectoid enemy that no one, including Physician Leigheas Sternbow, the Takla royal physician, and Mercine Feney, the Empire's powerful female leader, can make disappear. / https://dc.etsu.edu/alumni_books/1028/thumbnail.jpg
