The paper discusses how to boost corporate value systematically based on the theory of the five elements in traditional Chinese culture; firstly, the categorization and analogy approach from the theory of the five elements is applied to make the five elements correspond to the five major factors influencing corporate value: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, correspond to business innovation, financial capability, operational efficiency, competitive barriers, and comprehensive capacity, respectively, and the logical relation in these five elements is described and explained according to the principle of inter-promoting relation in the five elements. Continuous business innovation will bring about the improvement of operational efficiency, which in turn will be directly reflected in the growth of financial indicators, thereby providing an enterprise with the performance growth and cash flow guarantee; depending on a better profitability, the enterprise is capable of attracting and accumulating resources such as talents and capital, gaining competitive advantages and forming competitive barriers, as well as promoting the improvement of comprehensive capabilities and the cultivation of corporate culture; in addition, the improvement of corporate atmosphere can promote innovation more effectively, and thus boost corporate value systematically. Moreover, inspired by neural networks, the paper establishes an umbrella corporate value scoring system by combining it with the M-P neuron model, which is composed of the umbrella chart of corporate value scoring and the five-element neural network evaluation model. With respect to an enterprise, the five factors can be scored after an analysis is performed on its financial reports, industry rankings, corporate announcements and other information, and a five-dimensional umbrella radar chart can clearly present the performance of each factor influencing its value; the industry average is taken into account in scoring, the umbrella chart of each enterprise is not isolated but comparable because they all establish a certain connection with the industry; the five-element neural network evaluation model is regarded as a tool to facilitate enterprises to calculate the corporate value score, also with the help of the initial scoring of each element. The score reflects the inter-promoting relation principle of the five elements and can show how much each element can contribute to the improvement of the corporate value under the mutual influence, thereby highlighting the concept of systematic boost of corporate value. In this paper, the five elements analysis theory is applied to analyze the five enterprises: Ali Health, Wal-Mart, Tesla, Kweichow Moutai, and Haidilao, and find out the advantages of each company by making use of the inter-promoting relationship between the promoting elements, promoted elements and advantageous elements, and conclude their shortcomings of the companies and provide development suggestions. Finally, this paper explores the application method of the principle of inter-restricting in case analysis, i.e. developing the elements restricting advantageous elements, and promoting the systematic boost of corporate value from the perspective of balance. This chapter also expands the theory of the five elements from a company to the whole industry, and established a three-level classification system of "industry-segment -company". Each company in industry has its own advantages and it is unavailable to extract the advantageous element in the whole industry. However, in the process of dividing the industry into multiple segments, the present research concludes that the leading enterprises in each segment represent the future development trend of the field to a certain extent. The advantages of this enterprise tend to represent the advantages of this field. As a result, the leading enterprises can obtain various high-quality resources in the industry, which is helpful to further boost their corporate value. / Business Administration/Finance

With the shift in perspective from temporary to permanent residence in this country, Sikhs are caught in between two polar ends of homeland and diaspora. This thesis attempts to illuminate a third – a universal permanence free of physical barriers. This account describes a movement towards establishing a Sikh homeland that is manifested in the collective Sikh body of the world rather than in the physical land of Punjab. The turban that is the physical identity of the Sikhs in diaspora has also come to represent the rigidities of the culture, which neglect the omnipresent divinity, and sacredness of every place. In its form and content, this thesis is engaged in “unfolding of the turban” to open it to the new worlds it is now a part of, to create a new beginning as a human body unfolds upon death into its five primal elements on the verge of reviviscence. Sikhs worldwide are aware of their need to convert diaspora back into a homeland, to fight against restrictions that hinder the completion of rituals of life and death. The unraveling of the turban into an undulating path allows for a new perspective on permanence for the Sikhs in foreign lands. Unfolded into a form of the meandering river, the turban also represents the eternally flowing waters. The silent sacredness of the water indistinctly exists in Toronto. Behind the towering city, the Don River often flows quietly, leading a life parallel to that of the River Ganges and the River Sutlej. This once pastoral valley that sustained villages and nature is now discarded, in post-industrial despair. Trapped within these modern city confines, the river still secretly retains the power to transfigure souls, but its powers of reviviscence remain unidentified and unused due to restrictive cremation bylaws. This thesis attempts to create for the Sikhs an essential funeral landscape, whose icons may be read through an anamorphic lens of Sikh culture, while providing for all an opportunity to engage the forgotten river, and its energy.

基隆，一個早期興盛的貿易港口，在搭乘著郵輪來台的日本老婆婆眼中，這個港口似乎還留著她年輕時所見的繁華過往。隨著產業變遷及全台各地後起發展，基隆不再是唯一貨港，反而隨著逐年興起的旅遊業，成了大量郵輪的停靠岸。基隆像是停留在過去的時空中，與現今全球都市的均一化成了極大的反差對照，但卻也因此而保存了自我的地域風貌。 近年來城市興起一股以設計、創意為主導模式，企圖帶領都市走出一條有別於以往的思考模式，都市不再是以大量開發及建設做為金流指標，而是轉向由居民的互動參與及凝聚在地情感的生活指標，城市改由在地出發，重新思考如何在價值與價格、保存與開發、過去與未來中找到平衡。 本研究以基隆市中心為研究範圍，由設計思考模式以發覺、發現、發想、發展四個過程，經由反覆的發散與收聚斂過程，透過城市五行循環與制約特性中建構出平衡機制，分別對標竿案例及研究案例做分析。在標竿案例以美國紐約High Line Park經由城市五行分析其轉化歷程發現其成功是來自於多向的平衡機制。而在研究案例以基隆市中心區域分析在城市五行運行中所導出的問題及找出問題背後的關連性，透過城市五行診斷及分析為基隆市中心的再生提出具體建議。最後經由案例分析中驗證城市五行的歸屬。 / Keelung, a trading seaport boomed in late nineteenth century under the Japanese colonial era, seems still having its former glamour and busy days in the eyes of an old Japanese grandma, who just embarked from a docked cruise liner at the port in present day. Due to the change of core industrial transformation in Taiwan and the raise of other ports, Keelung is no longer the only trading seaport in the region. It has transformed to a popular cruise line destination from the recent increase in the tourism business demand. Contrast to other global cities’ modern and urban movements, Keelung looks like a city staying unchanged from its earlier days. Also because of this frozen in time, the city was able to preserve its charms and geographic terrain. During the recent decades, design thinking and creativity have been the leading model for city development. The intention behind was to create a design concept from a different thought process. Urban development is no longer targeting massive development and construction nor valued by the economic growth. Instead it is focusing on residents’ interactions within and the quality of life for the community. A city is transforming into local communities; and trying to find a balance between its value and price, between conservation and development, and between past and future. The scope of this project is downtown Keelung City. Use design thinking to review the project in four stages: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. From repeated divergence and convergence processes, through the cycle of five elements (in the city) with mutual generation and mutual restriction properties, a balance was formed. The comparison analysis was conducted between the High Line Park Project and this Keelung City Project. First, utilizing the five elements in the city, it was found that the success of the High Line Park project was due to a formed balance between these five. Second, the Keelung City project emphases on using the cycle of five elements to diagnose and analyze the problems and the connections between these problems among smaller sections of the downtown area. In addition, through the diagnosis and analysis, a recommendation was outlined for the Keelung City regeneration. Finally, detailed cases of the project confirm the matching category between the five elements and the city.

This qualitative study sought to explore the Hong Kong Chinese patient's perceptions of an Intensive Care experience and their views on the introduction of feng shui principles focussing on sleep orientations, dietary management and exercise regimes. The study explored the background of feng shui as an authentic traditional Chinese belief. It also explores if incorporating these feng shui principles into the health care setting would provide a positive effect for open-heart patients in an Intensive Care Unit at the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital in Hong Kong. The major inference drawn from this study is that Chinese patients seek culturally related experiences from the health care setting. The Chinese informants showed strong belief patterns in traditional practices of feng shui, however, practiced these within the confines of their homes as these experiences were denied to them in the hospital setting. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)
