Linkages among habitats and the flux of matter across ecosystem boundaries have important implications for biomass production of animals and plants, which is facilitated by trophic relations between consumers and their resources. It has been well documented that fish movements may transfer nutrients and aquatic production, but information on how this production contributes to individual energy allocation and reproductive investment is scarce. Furthermore, the trophic position of top predators in a food chain strongly influences food-web structure because it reflects the number of steps that energy takes from primary producers to tertiary consumers. Crocodilians are likely to influence the structure of food webs because of their pronounced ontogenetic shifts in diet. Some species of large crocodiles may be trophic links in diverse food webs throughout their lives, from freshwater, brackish, marine and adjacent terrestrial food webs. Amazonian crocodilians show interspecific differences in diet. However, it is unknown to what extent they differ in the primary sources of their diet and to what extent those differences are reflected in ontogenetic shifts in trophic position. It is also not well understood to what extent interspecific differences in diet are a reflection of foraging behavior or are a function of macrohabitat selection. We used a spatiotemporal context to trace the origins and the flux of energy by applying chemical tools, such as the natural ratio of carbon and nitrogen stable-isotopes and RNA:DNA. Within the tropical aquatic ecosystems we studied, we aimed to understand three aspects of food-web functioning: the seasonality and spatiality in the reproductive investment of diamond mullet (Liza alata) from the Northern Territory of Australia (Chapter 1); interspecific differences in the origins of energy sustaining the four species of Amazonian crocodilians within a spatial context (Chapter 2) and ontogenetic shifts in trophic position of these predators within the context of the food web (Chapter 3). The results show that reproductive investment of diamond mullet takes place during the dry season, when resources are limited and fish are in poor body condition. There is a strong trade-off between somatic and reproductive investment. This may be explained because diamond-mullet show a temporal uncoupling between resource acquisition from floodplains during the wet season, energy storage within lipid mesenteric bodies for some months and a subsequent reproductive allocation during the dry season. Because this fish undertakes spawning migrations across habitats, temporal and spatial uncoupling between energy acquisition and reproductive allocation have important implications for the preservation of natural hydrological regimes of water bodies. The maintenance of these hydrological regimes is important to enhance the capacity for fishes of this region to maintain viable populations. In the context of lotic ecosystems from central Amazonia, the results show evidence of differences in the basal resources sustaining the four species of Amazonian crocodilians. These differences result from behavioral divergences and foraging strategies in addition to macrohabitat selection. Furthermore, we found a positive relationship between crocodilian size and trophic position. However, there are interspecific differences in the shape of these relationships. Crocodilians occupy higher trophic levels than piscivorous fishes. This structure may create significant divergences in food-chain-length estimates because, traditionally, only fish have been considered as top predators in most food-chain-length studies. The information presented in this study brings novel insights about the biology and ecology of the studied consumers, depicting the trophic functioning of ecosystems where they occur in relation to the resources that sustain them.

Efficient use of water in agriculture ensures the crop to this end to it is necessary to study the processes of evapotranspiration from pasture. Thus, the objective was to determine the energy fluxes and evapotranspiration in Entisol cultivated with pastures in rainfed agriculture, in the microregion of Garanhuns-PE. To determine the energy balance was installed a tower in the center of the experimental area, containing two sensors measure temperature and relative humidity, and wind speed at two levels (z1 = 50 cm, e z2 = 100 cm) above the canopy of the pasture. In addition to these sensors were installed a pyranometer, a radiometer, a sensor for measuring the wind direction, and a rain gauge charts. To measure the heat flow in the soil, flowmeters were installed in two places to a depth z1 = 5,0 cm, with a soil moisture sensor at the same depth, and two horizontally installed in the thermal probes depths z1 = 2,0 cm and z2 = 8,0 cm. All the measurements mentioned above were stored as averages every 30 minutes, except where the rainfall was estimated their total value in a data acquisition system from Campbell Scientific CR 1000. There were also the following determinations in the pasture height of the vegetation cover (canopy), biomass accumulation, leaf area index and evolution of the root system. The evaporation of the culture, on average, of 1,5 mm d-1, with a total of 543,43mm. Most of the net radiation (Rn), during the analysis of the pasture, has been consumed by the sensible heat flux (H) with 58%. The latent heat flux consumed 36% and the heat flow in the soil only 6% of Rn. The water availability influenced the production of green biomass and LAI, with the highest yields of biomass and LAI occurring in the higher water availability.

No different from other cultures, knowledge of the amount of water required by grazing at each stage of its development is an important factor for successful crop production. Therefore, quantifying evapotranspiration, even in rainfed agriculture is too important. Thus, the aim of this study was to quantify / estimate the evapotranspiration of Brachiaria grown in rainfed in the micro Garanhuns - PE, employing the methods of energy balance - Bowen ratio equation De Bruin & Holtslag (1982) and model SiSPAT. This work was conducted in the experimental area planted with Brachiaria decumbens in “Riacho do Papagaio” Farm, located in the county of São João - PE, located in the microregion of Garanhuns - PE. Data collection for estimation of evapotranspiration by the various methods proposed for this study was obtained from a micrometeorological tower installed in the experimental area, where they were measured: temperature and relative humidity at two levels above the canopy of pasture, net radiation , solar radiation, soil heat flux, wind direction and rainfall. Were also installed automated sensors for measuring temperature and volumetric soil moisture at depths of 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50 m. Were also carried out in the pasture the following determinations: height of vegetation (canopy), biomass accumulation, leaf area index and evolution of the root system. Crop evapotranspiration, determined by the energy balance - Bowen ratio and also the model followed SiSPAT variations in rainfall and averaged 1.5 mm d-1 and 1.4 mm d-¹, respectively. By equation De Bruin & Holtslag, evapotranspiration also followed the variations of rainfall and averaged 1.30 and 2.04 mm day-¹, when α was equal to 0.60 and 0.95, respectively. The SiSPAT model showed satisfactory performance by simulating the components of energy balance and evapotranspiration accumulated pasture under different atmospheric conditions and water availability to plants.

Efeito da mudança do uso e cobertura do solo nos balanços hídrico e energético da bacia do rio Ji-Paraná (RO) utilizando dados multitemporais de sensoriamento remoto / Effect of change of use and land cover in the water and energy balance of the river basin Ji-Paraná (RO) using multitemporal remote sensing data

Furlan, Deise Nunes 11 December 2013 (has links)
The state of Rondônia has undergone significant land use change in the last 30 years due to the occupation and exploitation of natural resources. The changes occurring in the landscape in recent years, mainly due to the replacement of forest areas for grazing, has strong influence on the hydrological cycle and climate. There are many studies that seek to understand the dynamics of climate and biosphere in the Amazon region, however, there are many difficulties for implementing surface measurements and often they are for specific sites and do not represent the whole ecosystem. Thus, an alternative for these studies is the use of satellite data, which allow to obtain information from the surface with reasonable spatialtemporal coverage. Due to the complexity of the Amazon region, the study area, the use satellite images is a possibility for the estimation of the energy fluxes on large scales current research. In this context, the aimed to estimate the energy balance components including daily evapotranspiration through the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land - SEBAL and evaluate how the replacement of forest areas other land use types has influenced the balance water and energy in the central region of the by Rondônia state in the last 25 years of use and occupation of land. The study was carried out with multispectral images (Landsat 5 and 7 Lansat) of the central part of Rondônia (scene 231/68), which is located Urupá River basin including part of the river basin Ji-Paraná, with temporal serie 1987-2011. Thus it was possible to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns of the energy floxes including actual daily evapotranspiration evaluating the SEBAL algorithm accuracy for different classes land use. The results showed that the study area has undergone significant change in vegetation cover, considering that in a period of 25 years the forest area was reduced by 69.1 % of its initial area. The analyzes carried out with the variables estimated by SEBAL in the context of land use change, show that the model is sensitive enough to detect these changes in terms of energy fluxes on the surface. In general, the replacement of forest areas by agriculture and pasture caused an increase in the surface albedo, net radiation reductions, increased surface temperature, increasing heat flux in the soil, increasing the of sensible heat flux, decline of latent heat flux and consequently, reduction in evapotranspiration rate. This shows that the impact on the local climate with the replacement of the forest by other land uses are changing the hydrological regime and the local climate, as the evapotranspiration decreased by 33 % when compared with areas of forest. Considering the extent of the forest area that was reduced during the last years, the impact may be even higher.

The River Continuum Concept (RCC) suggests that changes in physico-chemical factors across the stream longitudinal gradient leads to the adding of species of different feeding habits. In this sense, the aim of the study is the trophic characterization of fish headwater species from subtropical streams and to identify energy flow between macroinvertebrate and fishes. It is expected that detritivorous fish standing crop increase across stream longitudinal gradient due to increase in primary production in the same direction. This study was carried out in 32 streams from 1st to 4thorder in eight microbasins in the Sinos River basin. Ichthyofauna was sampled with electric fishing in 100m2 sections. Macroinvertebrates were sampled with Surber sampler to assess resource availability and primary consumer standing crop. Richness and diversity of fish communities were also calculated. The diet of the most abundant fish species was assessed as well as relative importance and niche amplitude indexes. The results displayed that fish diversity, richness and standing crop increased across stream longitudinal gradient corroborating RCC postulates. It was also indicated that fish communities was composed by two feeding groups (insetivorous and detritivorous). The detritivorous fishes have in turn increased fish standing crop and established two directions of energy flow which act as both primary and secondary consumers.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Paulo Ferreira da Silva.pdf: 1871633 bytes, checksum: e99149f8fc75908f1d9ee5e36ea3b553 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-07-20 / The natural vegetation of Caatinga is relatively well adapted and tolerant to drought and to high temperatures. It is known that forest conversions to pasture and/or crop cultivation are human interventions, which affect energy exchanges, water and carbon between land surface and the atmosphere. However, up to the present moment, there is no study measuring these fluxes in the caatinga and pastures areas in the Brazilian semiarid lands. Thus, this paper aimed at determining the fluxes of energy, H2O and CO2 in areas of caatinga and pastures, as well as at analyzing the seasonal variability patterns of these fluxes. The land activities were carried out in two areas, one of them located on the Buenos Aires farm (7° 59’ 31’’ S and 38° 17’ 59’’ O), and the other located on the Lagoinha farm (07° 56’ 50,4’’ S and 38° 23’ 29’’ O), cultivated with pasture of grass chain (Urochloa mosambicensis), both properties located in the city of Serra Talhada, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. In order to determine the fluxes of energy, H2O and CO2, a methodology of correlation of swirls was adopted, by means of micrometeorological towers, installed in the center of each experimental area. Along with the index of foliar area, we have also measured the aboveground phytomass of both the pasture and the caatinga herbaceous vegetation, as well as water storage in the soil, by means of TDR sensors. On the basis of the results, it has been found that the maximum production of dry pasture mass was in the order of 2,208 kg ha-1 and annual average of 832 kg ha-1. On the other hand, the caatinga dry mass was in the order of 2,559 kg ha-1 and the annual average was 626 kg ha-1. Water storage in the soil (0-40 cm) of pasture was 29% greater than the one of the caatinga. This fact was possibly attributed to the interception of rain by the caatinga canopy. In relation the fluxes of energy, radiation balance (Rb) was used mainly as sensitive flow of heat (H), with 51% in the pasture and 47% in the caatinga. The fraction of Rb used as flow of latent heat (LE) was of 23% in the pasture and 32% in the caatinga. In relation to the evapotranspiration, the caatinga had total values (523 mm) and average values (1,4 mm d-1) greater than the pasture (389 mm and 1,1 mm d-1), possibly due to the greater depth of its radicular system. During the experimental period, the fluxes of daily average CO2 were ˗ 0,91 and ˗ 0,68 μmol m-2 s-1 for the caatinga and the pasture, respectively. Not only during the rainy season but also the dry season, the vegetation acted as atmospheric CO2 sink. The caatinga was more efficient than the pasture, sequestrating in average 14,6 kg of C ha-1 d-1, during the rainy season and 4,3 kg of C ha-1 d-1, in the dry season, while the pasture sequestrated 11,7 kg of C ha-1 d-1, in the rainy season and 2,5 kg of C ha-1 d-1, in the dry season. The caatinga has proved more efficient than the pasture in using soil water (greater ET) and in sequestrating atmospheric CO2.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodolfo Marcondes Silva Souza.pdf: 2825721 bytes, checksum: 36c0557b377a4bd890e197c4bb4ce70c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / With climate change scenarios indicating increase of air temperature, expected to reduce water resources in many regions of the world, such as the semi-arid northeast, due to the increasing emission of greenhouse gases, including dioxide (CO2), studies investigating the relationship between flows of water, energy and CO2 in agricultural ecosystems are of fundamental importance to understand the effect of climate change on agriculture. The eddy covariance (EC) is a method that provides high temporal resolution measurements of fluxes of energy, water and CO2 between the surface and the atmosphere and in recent years has been considered the standard tool this type of study. Thus the present study aimed to i) evaluate the seasonal variation of the flows of energy, water and carbon; ii) verify the energy partitioning and water; iii) quantify the degree to which environmental factors affect the daily and seasonal patterns of evapotranspiration iv) relate the flow of CO2 with plant growth and v) determine the components of the water balance. Between January 2012 and December 2013, flux measurements of sensible heat (H), latent heat (LE) and carbon (FCO2) emissions were performed by the eddy covariance method in a pasture in the semiarid region of Pernambuco. Besides these measures, the monitoring of rainfall (P), the change in water storage (DA) and runoff (ES) to determine the water balance were performed. Plant measurements and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) were quantified for tracks changes in phenology and vegetation activity. Regression analyzes were performed to assess the relationship between variables. P values in the two years of study were lower than normal climatology of the region. The average air temperature in 2013 increased by 0.66 ◦C compared to 2012. It was observed that the fraction H/Rn increased the wet to the dry season period and all years. H was superior to the LE, except for periods of occurrence of significant events of P. The Priestley-Taylor’s constant (a) indicated that the water storage in the soil affected the evapotranspiration (ET) during almost the whole time. The majority of P was transferred to the atmosphere via ET, followed by runoff (ES), which together totaled over 77% of P. The integration of carbon flow data indicated an average absorption by the ecosystem equivalent to 2.15 Mg C ha−1 yr−1.

Deise Nunes Furlan 11 December 2013 (has links)

Transesterificação química e enzimática de miscela etanólica de óleo de soja / Chemical and enzymatic transesterification of soybean oil ethanolic miscellae

Sangaletti, Naiane 11 May 2012 (has links)
The feedstock for biodiesel production represents more than 70% of the cost and technological and economic feasibility studies of different oil sources are of enormous importance. The extraction of soybean oil with ethanol solvent results in two miscella, one rich in oil (rich miscellae) and another rich in ethanol (poor miscellae). The poor miscellae can be reused in the extraction process and the rich miscellae can be used directly without dessolventizing and refining stages. The oil rich miscellae was esterified by two different processes: chemical and enzymatic, with different concentrations in the molar ratio (oil: ethanol), different temperatures and either basic catalyst (NaOH) or an enzyme (Novozym®435), searching for the highest production of ethyl esters. The study goal was to prove the feasibility of producing biodiesel from the transesterification of rich miscellae (oilethanol) in soybean oil, without oil refining and evaluating the performance of ethyl esters by applying immobilized enzymes Novozym®435 and a basic catalyst (NaOH). We adopted the experimental design and the surface response methodology for the best selection of process conditions, with the response variables the yield and the quality of biodiesel. Chemical and enzymatic esterification trials were conducted. The reuse of enzyme was studied by washing with different solvents (96% ethanol, isopropanol and tert-butanol) and the transesterification reaction in the presence of the co-solvent tert-butanol. The production of esters by enzymes in the miscellae allowed a comparison of the costs between the enzymatic and chemical catalysis process based on the energy flow analysis. The rich miscellae was obtained after three baths employing the poor miscellae and a last fourth bath with ethanol 99% (v/v), presenting efficiency of 83% and a residual meal oil content of 4.2%. In its composition, the rich miscellae showed 90% of soybean oil and up to 7% ethanol. The transesterification of the rich miscellae with NaOH catalyst was optimized and had a ethyl esters yield (RE) of 97.2% under the experimental conditions of: 1:12 molar ratio, catalyst concentration 0.67% and temperature 30° C. For the enzymatic transesterification, the maximum yield was 85% for the reaction conditions: molar ratio 1:4.5, catalyst concentration 9.5% and temperature 40° C. Novozym®435 was not recovered with successive washes of the solvents. However, the tertbutanol as a co-solvent increased the yield of esters to 94%. The energy flow analysis showed that obtaining the raw material (flaking and extraction) was the most energy demanding. The rich miscellae from the semi-pilot plant demanded more energy than the refined oil, however, the transesterification of the rich miscellae using chemical catalyst, required less energy compared to the enzymatic catalysis and the conventional process methanol and ethanol. The esterification of rich miscellae is feasible energetically, however, the extraction step with ethanol should be adjusted to enable energetically the chain of biodiesel production.
