Caminho aberto: o trabalho em papel e vídeo / Open path: the work on paper and videoLoeb, Angela Varela 22 April 2015 (has links)
This study is part of the artistic work over PHD course. On the one hand, it addresses the process of this work on paper and on video, seeking to inform the reader the choices present in the implementation, as well as reflect on some notions that feed the process. They are: \"lack of symbolization\", indissociation, unblock, fluxus and \"use of a minimal form\". On the other one, in line with these notions, the study approaches to a group of art historical names that dialogues with my process for conceptual, methodological or formal contiguity. Three artists are studied: Lucio Fontana (1899 - 1968), Roy Lichtenstein (1923 - 1997) and Gordon Matta-Clark (1945-1978). The images of the work done on paper during the course are part of this document as well as a DVD with the developed recorded videos.

Fear and Loathing in Los Angeles: Industrial Decentralization and the Rise and Fall of L.A.'s PeripheryBargmann, Alexander 01 January 2011 (has links)
During the 1920s, Los Angeles Boosters, fearing the congestion of East coast cities, developed ideas about urban growth that emphasized industrial decentralization and urban dispersal. Before, during, and after WWII, these fears intertwined with the rise of defense related industries, particularly aviation and steel. As the city continued to grow, becoming a regional metropolis, these defense related industries, long present in Los Angeles, were brought into peripheral hubs by local boosters looking to develop places like Palmdale and Fontana. These cities grew and became, as important manufacturing and defense centers, part of the larger regional economy. These forces and boosters were key in developing Los Angeles' urban character - from its sprawl to its reliance on the military industrial complex. As American manufacturing waned and the Cold War ended, significant downsizing in these industries (Steel in Fontana and aerospace in Palmdale) led to economic and urban transformations in these peripheral hubs. No longer booming manufacturing hubs, they became distant suburbs looking for new economic lifeblood on the edges of Los Angeles's urban and industrial sprawl.

An architectural excursus into the site of becoming : Domenico Fontana's Della trasportatione dell'obelisco VaticanoToker, Eric Solomon. January 1998 (has links)
At the close of the sixteenth century, the Roman architect Domenico Fontana choreographed the transformation of the Vatican Obelisk from its antique position on the circus of Nero, to its present location facing St. Peter's. Fontana's treatise Della trasportatione dell'obelisco Vaticano (1590), records this event in a detailed narrative, and a series of remarkable etchings. Architect to Pope Sixtus V, Fontana is often cited as a founder of city planning due to his seminal reorganization of Rome's topography, and as an early proponent of civil engineering owing to his calculated mechanics. Yet neither of these appellations do justice to Fontana's complex practice, one in which architecture is composed in time, characterized by the intensity and profundity of the festival, and the divine power of Man to operate within a world of sympathies. The scaffold which translates the obelisk---and the occulted knowledge of these cosmographic relations---into the space of the city, also invokes an alternate tradition for architecture. Opposite classical solidity and eternal being, Fontana's castello proposes the immaterial, and the ephemeral. An inquiry into this scene of emerging order is particularly relevant for our contemporary world, with our idols fallen and our foundations in rain. / Appended to this thesis is an abridged English translation of Della trasportatione, chapter 1.

Feo-hifomicose no Rio Grande do Sul : apresentação de série de casos e comentários sobre o tema em nosso meio / Presentation of series of cases and comments on the subject in our environmentSalles, Emily Ferreira January 2010 (has links)
Phaeohyphomycosis refers to infection caused by darkly pigmented fungi. We reviewed the Brazilian casuistic from 1953 to 2010 and presented the clinicalepidemiologic and diagnostic features of addictional 17 cases. In the cases hematoxilin and eosin stain was used to look for structural changes of the infected lesion; Gomori’s methenamine-silver stain identified these organisms; and Fontana-Masson staining confirm the presence of melanin fungal cell wall. The organisms formed mycelial colonies and produced melanin-like pigments that give the colonies the characteristic dark color. The microscopic study of cultures identified etiology. The phaeohyphomycosis is a widespread tropical disease in Brazil. However, it is underestimated due to formalin fixation tissue specimens that oppose the prior cultures.
