Identificação de fontes de sedimento em bacias hidrográficas rurais do sul do Brasil / Fingerprinting sediment sources in agricultural catchments in southern Brazil

Tiecher, Tales 05 March 2015 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Knowledge of the main diffuse sources of sediment can enhance efficiency in the use of public resources invested in soil conservation management strategies. Conventional fingerprinting methods based on geochemical composition are time-consuming and require critical preliminary sample preparation. In this context, spectroscopic methods can be less labor-intensive, cheap, and viable alternative for this purpose. The present study aimed to quantify the sediment sources supplied to rivers in agricultural catchments of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, and to evaluate the potential use of spectroscopy measurements as a low cost and easy alternative to fingerprint sediment sources. Five study areas with increased size (Arvorezinha, Júlio de Castilhos 1, Júlio de Castilhos 2, Conceição, and Guaporé, with areas of 1.19, 0.80, 1.43, 804.3, and 2,027.2 km2, respectively) were evaluated. Sediment sources evaluated were crop fields, grasslands, unpaved roads, and stream channels. Sediment sampling strategies included time-integrated samplers, fine-bed sediments, and storm-event sediments. The total concentrations of several geochemical tracers were measured in both sediment and source samples. Spectral measurements were made for ultraviolet-visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared ranges only for the Arvorezinha catchment. Source ascriptions obtained by alternative methods based on spectroscopy analysis were in agreement with ascriptions from classical fingerprinting method based on geochemical composition. Spectral information can provide as relevant information as the geochemical tracers. Furthermore, combining visible-based-colour with geochemical tracers was a rapid and cheap way to enhance discrimination between source types and to improve the precision of sediment sources apportionment. Results of sediment source apportionment demonstrate that other factors than proportion of land use, such as distribution of croplands, forests, and unpaved roads across the landscape play an important role in sediment production. Riparian forests seems to be a key factor to control stream channel erosion. The sediment yielded from unpaved roads seems to be strongly scale-related and it depends on the number of intersections between roads the stream network. Crop fields, even when cultivated with no-tillage, are still the main source of sediment to rivers in agricultural catchments in Southern Brazil. The amount of cropland specific sediment yield ranged from 0.06 to 3.95 ton ha 1 yr 1. These variations are partly attributed to the relief and slope, but land use and soil management are also important control factors. The cropland specific sediment yield remains too high for areas with low sensitivity to erosion where no-tillage is applied, as in Conceição catchment (1.30 ton ha 1 of cropland yr 1), indicating that additional efforts are necessary to further reduce soil erosion. Therefore, there is an urgent need to better plan land use and cover in these catchments, inasmuch as the soil management systems used by farmers proved to be inefficient to reduce runoff and erosion in cultivated areas of Southern Brazil. / Knowledge of the main diffuse sources of sediment can enhance efficiency in the use of public resources invested in soil conservation management strategies. Fingerprinting sediment sources in agricultural catchments in southern Brazil / Traçage des sources de sédiments dans des bassins versants agricoles du sud du Brésil / Identificação de fontes de sedimento em bacias hidrográficas rurais do sul do Brasil

Tiecher, Tales 05 March 2015 (has links)
The knowledge of the main diffuse sources of sediment production can enhance efficiency in the use of public resources invested in management strategies that seek to mitigate sediment transfer. The amount of sediment yielded from crop fields per unit of area that actually reaches the stream outlet ranged from 0.06 to 3.95 ton ha-1 yr-1. These variations are attributed partly to the relief and slope, but land use and soil management mostly influences them. The amount of sediment originated from crop fields are still too high for low susceptible areas with no-till, as Conceição catchment (1.30 ton ha-1 yr-1), indicating that further efforts are still necessary to further reduce soil erosion. Therefore, there is an urgent need to better plan land use and occupation in these catchments, inasmuch as the soil management systems used by farmers are still inefficient to reduce runoff and erosion in areas with crops in southern Brazil.

Dinâmica do fósforo de sedimentos oriundos de bacia hidrográfica subtropical compoluição rural e urbana / Phosphorus dynamics in sediments from a subtropical catchment with rural and urban pollution

Zafar, Mohsin 23 November 2015 (has links)
Areas at steep slopes in the catchments with high occupation by family farmers in Southern Brazil, even with a high surface covered with regenerated forests, are characterized by the persistence of sources of rural and urban pollution that are undermining the quality of aquatic systems. The unfair use of soil outside its capability, the adoption of inadequate soil tillage systems, the integrated system of animal production (poultry and swine) in quantities environmentally intolerable and the untreated domestic sewage from small villages are the main factors responsible for the input of high amounts of phosphorus into watercourses. In this context, the present doctoral thesis aims (i) monitoring the temporal variation in sediment-bound phosphorus in sub-catchments under different land-use and soil tillage systems and (ii) assessment of the potential of sediments from rural and urban sources to behave as source or sink of phosphorus for aquatic systems. In the Guaporé River catchment, six representative headwater sub-catchments with contrasting land-use and soil management were monitored. The selected sub-catchments were characterized by: (i) predominance of native forest (control); (ii) predominance of areas transformed to agriculture recently, but under conventional tillage CT (sub1); (iii) areas under CT, but with predominance of Ilex plantations (sub2); (iv) predominance of tobacco cultivation of long term under CT (sub3); (v) intensive agriculture under no-tillage NT (sub4); and (vi) intensive agriculture under NT and receiving untreated sewage of a twenty thousand inhabitant town (sub5). In addition, five points of the main river (P1 to P5) were monitored: the first one is located near to the junction of the sub-catchments 4 and 5, and the last one at the outlet of the watershed. Suspended and bed sediments were collected, comprising ten field campaigns performed in the monitoring period of 24 months (October 2012 to October 2014). The different fractions of phosphorus (P) of sediment were analyzed considering the bioavailability. The P sorption-desorption parameters in the sediments were estimated. The conversion of native forest for annual crops production areas promotes the production of sediments with higher amounts of total, inorganic and labile phosphorus. The values of maxima phosphorus adsorption capacity, instantaneous available and potentially available phosphorus forms, desorption rate and mobility index of phosphorus in sediments collected in the different sub-catchments in the following order: native forest < CT < CT with the intensive production of tobacco < NT < NT in the rural area plus urban sewage. A highly positive correlation was observed between different phosphorus fractions (especially the labile phosphorus), as well as different parameters of sorption/desorption, and amounts of iron and aluminum in sediments. It was found the highest amount of labile phosphorus in sediments collected at the end of winter and beginning of spring, particularly in the areas where tobacco is cultivated under CT.

Borges, Eduardo Humberto Campos 21 March 2016 (has links)
Apesar disso, a água bruta do Aquífero Bauru ainda apresenta boa qualidade com propriedades físico- químicas e bacteriológicas adequadas a diversos usos. / The Bauru Aquifer is considered the most important hydrogeological unit of the city of Araguari, Minas Gerais. The water from this aquifer is exploited due to low cost, which is related to the fact of being a shallow and local subjected to an abundant recharging. However, these characteristics makes it potentially vulnerable to pollutants. This work aimed to provide an overview of the quality of raw water from the aquifer Bauru underlying the urban area of Araguari, identifying possible sources of pollution. Water samples were collected in wells of public water utility. The criteria for selection of the wells were: spatial distribution, operation, structure and risk areas. The samples were collected upstream of disinfectant application point, ensuring the qualitative aspects of raw water. 68 wells were sampled corresponding to 80% of the wells in operation. Were held two field campaigns, the first in November 2012 and the second in December 2014. The samples were subjected to pH tests, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorus, COD, BOD, apparent color, turbidity, total solids, solids total dissolved, total suspended solids, total volatile solids and total fixed. The results of field and laboratory steps allowed the mapping of quality parameters and the identification of critical areas in terms of pollution. The results indicated that wastewater leaks in areas that have high levels of vulnerability may be the cause of nitrate and volatile solids present in some wells examined. Nevertheless, the raw water from the aquifer Bauru still has good quality with physical-chemical and bacteriological appropriate to different uses. Although the concentrations found are still below the limits established by law, it is clear the importance of continuous monitoring of groundwater quality extracted for urban supply. / Dissertação (Mestrado)
